• Internet unusably slow with Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B card

  So I have recently installed Ubuntu 11.10 for a dual boot with wind 7. After the install I had like 300 updates, so I installed them. At first I could use the internet, although it was extremely slow. However now I cannot, sometimes it will load and others it will simply time out. When I try to download something it will either take forever or will not at all. This is a wired system. On Windows side my speeds are fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also like I said I am new to Linux/Ubuntu so please be nice. One last thing, I also installed 11.10 for same dual boot on my laptop, and wireless speed is the same as on Windows? Only the wired desktop gives me the problem? Hear is some hardware info.. Hope it helps.   After upgrading to 12.04 my interent connection no longer works. More precisely it is really, really, slow, and occasionally will connect, but do so only for a few moments and then disappear again. • Need efficient way to keep enemy from getting hit multiple times by same source

  My game's a simple 2D one, but this probably applies to many types of scenarios. Suppose my player has a sword, or a gun that shoots a projectile that can pass through and hit multiple enemies. While the sword is swinging, there is a duration where I am checking for the sword making contact with any enemy on every frame. But once an enemy is hit by that sword, I don't want him to continue getting hit over and over as the sword follows through. (I do want the sword to continue checking whether it is hitting other enemies.) I've thought of a couple different approaches (below), but they don't seem like good ones to me. I'm looking for a way that doesn't force cross-referencing (I don't want the enemy to have to send a message back to the sword/projectile). And I'd like to avoid generating/resetting multiple array lists with every attack. Each time the sword swings it generates a unique id (maybe by just incrementing a global static long). Every enemy keeps a list of id's of swipes or projectiles that have already hit them, so the enemy knows not to get hurt by something multiple times. Downside is that every enemy may have a big list to compare to. So projectiles and sword swipes would have to broadcast their end-of-life to all enemies and cause a search and remove on every enemy's array list. Seems kind of slow. Each sword swipe or projectile keeps its own list of enemies that it has already hit so it knows not to apply damage. Downsides: Have to generate a new list (probably pull from a pool and clear one) every time a sword is swung or a projectile shot. Also, this breaks down modularity, because now the sword has to send a message to the enemy, and the enemy has to send a message back to the sword. Seems to me that two-way streets like this are a great way to create very difficult-to-find bugs.

• ubuntu 12.10 Lenovo b570e, WiFi connected but not working

  I'm running ubuntu 12.10 liveUSB on a lenovo b570e. It has an atheros wifi card that connects with my home network but I can't browse AT ALL. My network is multiple clients --> router --> isp modem --> Internet I can ping my router (192.168.0.1) but not my isp's modem(192.168.15.1). I have 3 other computers connected to the same router that are working fine (infact i'm posting from one) ping -c 3 google.com unknown host google.com ping -c 3 8.8.8.8 shows 100% packet loss I think its some networking issue. I tried directly connecting it to the router via ethernet cable but same issue. It gets an ip, shows LAN connected but can't browse. If I connect it directly to the isp modem via ethernet cable it starts working fine. Connection Information shows: Interface: 802.11 wifi (wlan0) driver: ath9k security: wpa/wpa2 speed: 150mb/s ip: 192.168.0.106 broadcast: 192.168.0.255 subnet:255.255.255.0 default route: 192.168.0.1 primary dns: 192.168.15.1 i have restarted the router and modem many times. Rebooted the LiveUSB many times.

  I have bought an Asus wireless LAN PC Card WL-100GE model, and I am using lubuntu on my system. While I have no cable connection, currently I cannot access the internet and update my laptop. • Wifi doesn't connect if I'm upstairs

  Hello there, I'm finding that Wifi connects when I'm in the living room, where the internet router etc is. But if I try to connect upstairs it is a no go. Booting in Windows 7 (dual boot :D ) I find that Wifi connects. I find this very confusing and have it since the install. Please help!   I just installed Kubuntu 12.04.2 and do not have an internet connection. I also cannot access the Desktop and only have the terminal. When I enter xlcock I get Error: Can't open display:. I believe this is because I do not have the correct drivers and need to download them ... using the internet which I can't access. • Google Music Player doesn't work

  I'm trying to log in on Google Music Player application but doesn't work. I get the message below: Login Failed Could not identify your computer. Learn More On Google Help it says that it doesn't run on virtual machines, which is not my case, but I have a virtualbox installed though, and it says some people get to work if they disable their bridge network. The thing is I don't have any bridge interface, even if I remove all virtualbox modules I still get this message.   Need help with my newly installed Ubuntu 12.04 system (dual booting along with Win 7), even thoguh I can use internet using the modem and directly plugging it, the wireless network is disabled and it says firmware missing. • NetworkManager detects no networks with a RTL8188CE

  I'm on a 2011 Lenovo Thinkpad T420i with a Realtek RTL8188CE WiFi adapter. Here's the scenario: I pop in the Ubuntu LiveCD to install. Laptop detects all networks in range, I connect to my home network, internet working great. Once Ubuntu finishes installing, the home network I am connected to is the only one which appears in the applet list. Upon restarting or waking from suspend, NetworkManager does not detect any networks – it simply displays "Disconnected" under the Wireless Network section of the menu. I am able to connect to my home network by using the "Connect to Hidden Wireless Network" option and it works immediately. I have yet to test if this works with other SSIDs. I have tried reinstalling the entire OS as well as NetworkManager and my wireless drivers. • Is this a b43 driver problem?

  I have 13.04 on a Dell Inspiron 1564 with Broadcom 4312 WiFi card. The wl drivers cause kernel panic on linux-3.8 so I succesfully installed the b43 driver a couple of months ago. Now I have changed ISP and got a new router, and the connection drop when downloading software from internet to a 2008r2 using Remmina Client, and apt-get install on virtual machines in virtualbox. I have no idea why this suddenly became a problem.. My phone does not loose the connection, just Ubuntu. • Add Your Gmail Account to Outlook 2010 Using IMAP

  If you’re upgrading from Outlook 2003 to 2010, you might want to use IMAP with your Gmail account to synchronize mail across multiple machines. Using our guide, you will be able to start using it in no time. Enable IMAP in Gmail First log into your Gmail account and open the Settings panel. Click on the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab and verify IMAP is enabled and save changes. Next open Outlook 2010, click on the File tab to access the Backstage view. Click on Account Settings and Add and remove accounts or change existing connection settings. In the Account Settings window click on the New button. Enter in your name, email address, and password twice then click Next. Outlook will configure the email server settings, the amount of time it takes will vary. Provided everything goes correctly, the configuration will be successful and you can begin using your account. Manually Configure IMAP Settings If the above instructions don’t work, then we’ll need to manually configure the settings. Again, go into Auto Account Setup and select Manually configure server settings or additional server types and click Next.   Select Internet E-mail – Connect to POP or IMAP server to send and receive e-mail messages. Now we need to manually enter in our settings similar to the following. Under the Server Information section verify the following. Account Type: IMAP Incoming mail server: imap.gmail.com Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com Note: If you have a Google Apps account make sure to put the full email address ([email protected]) in the Your Name and User Name fields. Note: If you live outside of the US you might need to use imap.googlemail.com and smtp.googlemail.com Next, we need to click on the More Settings button… In the Internet E-mail Settings screen that pops up, click on the Outgoing Server tab, and check the box next to My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication. Also select the radio button next to Use same settings as my incoming mail server. In the same window click on the Advanced tab and verify the following. Incoming server: 993 Incoming server encrypted connection: SSL Outgoing server encrypted connection TLS Outgoing server: 587 Note: You will need to change the Outgoing server encrypted connection first, otherwise it will default back to port 25. Also, if TLS doesn’t work, we were able to successfully use Auto. Click OK when finished. Now we want to test the settings, before continuing on…it’s just easier that way incase something was entered incorrectly. To make sure the settings are tested, check the box Test Account Settings by clicking the Next button. If you’ve entered everything in correctly, both tasks will be completed successfully and you can close out of the window. and begin using your account via Outlook 2010. You’ll get a final congratulations message you can close out of… And begin using your account via Outlook 2010. Conclusion Using IMAP allows you to synchronize email across multiple machines and devices. The IMAP feature in Gmail is free to use, and this should get you started using it with Outlook 2010. • SQL SERVER – Fix : Error : 3117 : The log or differential backup cannot be restored because no files

  I received the following email from one of my readers. Dear Pinal, I am new to SQL Server and our regular DBA is on vacation. Our production database had some problem and I have just restored full database backup to production server. When I try to apply log back I am getting following error. I am sure, this is valid log backup file. Screenshot is attached. [Few other details regarding server/ip address removed] Msg 3117, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The log or differential backup cannot be restored because no files are ready to roll forward. Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 RESTORE LOG is terminating abnormally. Screenshot attached. [Removed as it contained live IP address] Please help immediately. Well I have answered this question in my earlier post, 2 years ago, over here SQL SERVER – Fix : Error : Msg 3117, Level 16, State 4 The log or differential backup cannot be restored because no files are ready to rollforward. However, I will try to explain it a little more this time. For SQL Server database to be used it should in online state. There are multiple states of SQL Server Database. ONLINE (Available – online for data) OFFLINE RESTORING RECOVERING RECOVERY PENDING SUSPECT EMERGENCY (Limited Availability) If the database is online, it means it is active and in operational mode. It will not make sense to apply further log from backup if the operations have continued on this database. The common practice during the backup restore process is to specify the keyword RECOVERY when the database is restored. When RECOVERY keyword is specified, the SQL Server brings back the database online and will not accept any further log backups. However, if you want to restore more than one backup files, i.e. after restoring the full back up if you want to apply further differential or log backup you cannot do that when database is online and already active. You need to have your database in the state where it can further accept the backup data and not the online data request. If the SQL Server is online and also accepts database backup file, then there can be data inconsistency. This is the reason that when there are more than one database backup files to be restored, one has to restore the database with NO RECOVERY keyword in the RESTORE operation. I suggest you all to read one more post written by me earlier. • Inequality joins, Asynchronous transformations and Lookups : SSIS

  It is pretty much accepted by SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) developers that synchronous transformations are generally quicker than asynchronous transformations (for a description of synchronous and asynchronous transformations go read Asynchronous and synchronous data flow components). Notice I said “generally” and not “always”; there are circumstances where using asynchronous transformations can be beneficial and in this blog post I’ll demonstrate such a scenario, one that is pretty common when building data warehouses. Imagine I have a [Customer] dimension table that manages information about all of my customers as a slowly-changing dimension. If that is a type 2 slowly changing dimension then you will likely have multiple rows per customer in that table. Furthermore you might also have datetime fields that indicate the effective time period of each member record. Here is such a table that contains data for four dimension members {Terry, Max, Henry, Horace}: Notice that we have multiple records per customer and that the [SCDStartDate] of a record is equivalent to the [SCDEndDate] of the record that preceded it (if there was one). (Note that I am on record as saying I am not a fan of this technique of storing an [SCDEndDate] but for the purposes of clarity I have included it here.) Anyway, the idea here is that we will have some incoming data containing [CustomerName] & [EffectiveDate] and we need to use those values to lookup [Customer].[CustomerId]. The logic will be: Lookup a [CustomerId] WHERE [CustomerName]=[CustomerName] AND [SCDStartDate] <= [EffectiveDate] AND [EffectiveDate] <= [SCDEndDate] The conventional approach to this would be to use a full cached lookup but that isn’t an option here because we are using inequality conditions. The obvious next step then is to use a non-cached lookup which enables us to change the SQL statement to use inequality operators: Let’s take a look at the dataflow: Notice these are all synchronous components. This approach works just fine however it does have the limitation that it has to issue a SQL statement against your lookup set for every row thus we can expect the execution time of our dataflow to increase linearly in line with the number of rows in our dataflow; that’s not good. OK, that’s the obvious method. Let’s now look at a different way of achieving this using an asynchronous Merge Join transform coupled with a Conditional Split. I’ve shown it post-execution so that I can include the row counts which help to illustrate what is going on here: Notice that there are more rows output from our Merge Join component than on the input. That is because we are joining on [CustomerName] and, as we know, we have multiple records per [CustomerName] in our lookup set. Notice also that there are two asynchronous components in here (the Sort and the Merge Join). I have embedded a video below that compares the execution times for each of these two methods. The dataflow that used the Lookup transform took 36 seconds whereas the dataflow that used the Merge Join took less than two seconds. An illustration in case it is needed: Pretty conclusive proof that in some scenarios it may be quicker to use an asynchronous component than a synchronous one. Your mileage may of course vary. The scenario outlined here is analogous to performance tuning procedural SQL that uses cursors. It is common to eliminate cursors by converting them to set-based operations and that is effectively what we have done here. Our non-cached lookup is performing a discrete operation for every single row of data, exactly like a cursor does. By eliminating this cursor-in-disguise we have dramatically sped up our dataflow. • Things to install on a new machine – revisited

  as I prepare to get a new dev machine at work, I write the things I am going to install on it, before writing the first line of code on that machine: Control Freak Tools: Everything Search Engine – a free and amazingly fast search engine for files all over your machine. (just file names, not inside files). This is so fast I use it almost as a replacement for my start menu, but it’s also great for finding those files that get hidden and tucked away in dark places on my system. Ever had a situation where you needed to see exactly how many copies of X.dll were hiding on your machine and where? this tool is perfect for that. Google Chrome. It’s just fast. very fast. and Firefox has become the IE of alternative browsers in terms of speed and memory. Don’t even get me started on IE. TweetDeck – get a complete view of what’s up on twitter Total Commander – my still favorite file manager, over five years now. KatMouse – will scroll any window your hovering on, even if it’s not an active window, when you use scroll the wheel on it. PowerIso or Daemon Tools – for loading up ISO images of discs LogMeIn Ignition – quick access to your LogMeIn computers for online Backup: JungleDisk or BackBlaze KeePass – save important passwords MS Security Essentials – free anti virus that’s quoest and doesn’t make a mess of your system. for home: uTorrent – a torrent client that can read rss feeds (like the ones from ezrss.it ) Camtasia Studio and SnagIt – for recording and capturing the screen, and then adding cool effects on top. Foxit PDF Reader – much faster that adove reader. Toddler Keys (for home) – for when your baby wants to play with your keyboard. Live Writer – for writing blog posts for Lenovo ThinkPads – Lenovo System Update – if you have a “custom” system instead of the one that came built in, this will keep all your lenovo drivers up to date. FileZilla – for FTP stuff All the utils from sysinternals, (or try the live-links) especially: AutoRuns for deciding what’s really going to load at startup, procmon to see what’s really going on with processes in your system   Developer stuff: Reflector. Pure magic. Time saver. See source code of any compiled assembly. Resharper. Great for productivity and navigation across your source code FinalBuilder – a commercial build automation tool. Love it. much better than any xml based time hog out there. TeamCity – a great visual and friendly server to manage continuous integration. powerful features. Test Lint – a free addin for vs 2010 I helped create, that checks your unit tests for possible problems and hints you about it. TestDriven.NET – a great test runner for vs 2008 and 2010 with some powerful features. VisualSVN – a commercial tool if you use subversion. very reliable addin for vs 2008 and 2010 Beyond Compare – a powerful file and directory comparison tool. I love the fact that you can right click in windows exporer on any file and select “select left side to compare”, then right click on another file and select “compare with left side”. Great usability thought! PostSharp 2.0 – for addind system wide concepts into your code (tracing, exception management). Goes great hand in hand with.. SmartInspect – a powerful framework and viewer for tracing for your application. lots of hidden features. Crypto Obfuscator – a relatively new obfuscation tool for .NET that seems to do the job very well. Crypto Licensing – from the same company –finally a licensing solution that seems to really fit what I needed. And it works. Fiddler 2 – great for debugging and tracing http traffic to and from your app. Debugging Tools for Windows and DebugDiag  - great for debugging scenarios. still wanting more? I think this should keep you busy for a while.   Regulator and Regulazy – for testing and generating regular expressions Notepad 2 – for quick editing and viewing with syntax highlighting
