• NetworkManager doesn't detect my broadband device

  I have a Huawei K3765 (USB ID 12D1:1520) and I'm trying to use it with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid. I have usb-modeswitch installed, so when I plug the device I can see that it gets switched from storage-mode to modem-mode. My problem is that when I try to create a broadband mobile connection for it, NetworkManager doesn't detect the modem... I tried this on two different laptops. /var/log/daemon.log doesn't show anything of interest, AFAIKT... What could I try?

• Hybrid Columnar Compression

One used to need an Exadata to make use of it. • Develop a small size software using C only for copying same data to multiple external drives simultaneously [on hold]

  I want to develop a software that can copy the same data to multiple external drives, simultaneously. For example, consider a file Movie and I have 3 external drives to copy it to, and I want to copy Movie to all these 3 drives(these drives can be flash storage or external hard-disk or pen-drive etc. but have one thing in common, i.e. they are all external drives) at the same time, means when I right-click on Movie there has to be 1 option saying Copy to All Drives. It's a sort of mini-project and I want to use C language only. For starting I would like it to work only on Windows OS. What are the requirements of developing this software (not the system requirements but what will I need to develop such a software, like editor,compiler etc.)? I know this type of software must have already been developed but I want to use C language and C Language only. So, is it possible to develop such a software?

• Exadata - Following up on customer deployments

  Over the last year or so I've been visiting customers who have had Exadata deployed and have been enjoying the benefits the platform has been providing. Benefits include greater performance, consolidating multiple databases, data compression and time to value improvements. Most often I hear my reports run faster. One hospitality company report times that used to take 3 hrs now run in 12 seconds. Another services company reported all their batch reports taking 11hrs now run in 38 mins. Also reported that their transactions post faster, and batch updates run faster. So what does that mean? For most of them it means that now they have a platform that can handle growth. Most are growing 15% organically, but I've also seen 40% growth thru acquisition. Exadata has been keeping up with the additional data demand by customers leveraging compression and the smart storage features.

• Upload image file: is compression on client side already possible?

  When offering photo file uploading, usually the user will have badly compressed and huge (10+ megapixels) JPEG files from their cameras or phones. On the server side, these files will get re-compressed to something like 800x600px and JPEG quality 7 or 8. Is it (already) possible to do that re-compression on the client side? So that I would only need to transmit some 100kB (800x600px) and not 3 MB or more. Something like: (1) With javascript's new FileSystem API ( http://slides.html5rocks.com/#filewriter ) it would be possible to read the photo file's data into client side JS. (2) Then it would be necessary to re-encode the JPEG data, which is possible, but I counld not find any library for that (yet). Anybody knows such a library? (3) Last step would be to POST the re-compressed JPEG data to the server side for storage and get a URL to the stored photo file back from the server for inclusion into the client's HTML. I am looking for some jQuery plugin, other JS library or example web page that does this.

  I'm in the planning stages of a new webapp, and I am leaning strongly toward a multitenancy model. The app has a file storage function, where the user can upload (and operate on) files. I would like the ability of the user to share these files, however. How is this typically accomplished in a multi-tenant model? The example would be something like google docs. Each user has their own files; they can edit and tag and build collections with these files. Then, they can share a doc or a collection with someone else for collaboration. If every user has their own Database and tables, what strategy would one use to allow this kind of sharing while minimizing duplication of files and associated metadata?

  I'm after a regex that puts spaces around each "-" in a string, eg. 02 jaguar-leopard, tiger-panther 08 would become 02 jaguar - leopard, tiger - panther 08 Note that if the "-" already has spaces around it, no changes are to be made, eg. 02 jaguar - leopard, tiger - panther 08 should not become 02 jaguar - leopard, tiger - panther 08 The number of hyphens are unknown in advance. Thanks for any ideas... Edit: I'm not actually using a language for this. I'm using Ant Renamer (a mass file renaming utility). There are two fields in the renamer GUI, "Expression" and "New name" to provide inputs. What's the "correct" way to have such private static class member without these linker errors?   I want to transfer Thunderbird Profile on Win7 to thunderbird (17) Ubuntu 12.04. I already copied the profile folder from Windows to Ubuntu and modified progile.ini on the ubuntu machine to include [Profile] Name=Bill IsRelative=1 Path=(the name of the transfered profile folder) I think the problem is that the Win. TB profile content (files and folder structure) look VERY different that the that of the unbuntu TB profile's that was created on installation. The Ubuntu install is new where as the Win TB has undergone many updates. Seems the system for profile storage has changed drastically. I tried to start TB in safe mode but could't get the path correct to start TB in the terminal with the -safe-mode switch. What can I do? Bill

• What file formats and conventions should I support to make my game engine artist-friendly?

  I'm writing a game engine, and I want to know what I should do to make it more artist-friendly. I don't want to be too limiting in terms of what file formats I support, etc. Some specific questions: Are there specific formats artists like to model in? Does it not matter because the 3D modeler abstracts the data storage away? Is it okay if I don't support per-vertex coloration in my game engine? If I have to store a diffuse, specular, ambient, and emissive color value for each vertex, it doubles the size of vertices in the buffer. Is it reasonable to ask artists to do all these things in textures / maps? Any other tips you have about making it so that artists have to adapt their style to my specific engine as little as possible would be nice.

  I want to start looking for jobs in great companies and I have four years of enterprise corporations development, three years with C#.NET and alomst one year with Ruby On Rails, JS, etc... But when I look up interview questions from Google, Amazon, Fog Creek, DropBox, etc... they are really targeted at students that are coming fresh out of college and still remember what was Dynamic Programming and Dijkstra algorithms ... but I don't! :( It has been a while for me ... If a I need a sort algorithm I would either Google it or there already is a library and method that does it for me. So what should I do? Do they realize that this guy is not coming from college and will ask more general questions about software architecture or nop! I should go back find my old Data structures book from the storage and read them? In that case wht books and language do you recommend to hone my skills?

• Issues with external mounting after pysdm removed

  So, I'm very new to ubuntu. I was having troubles getting my external hard drive to be read/write permission. It's owner is my macbook, and writing on the drive was repeatedly denied. In trying to sort this out, I tried the Nautilus commands (no success), installed the PYSDM application, changed some things (as suggested by this user in this forum http://askubuntu.com/a/113992 )but then found that I was getting an error message whenever I tried to mount an external storage device. The error is: Unable to mount DERPSTICK error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: [mntent]: line 14 in etc/fstab is bad mount: only root can mount /dev/sdc1/ on /media/sdc1 Others with similar problems put their fstab up here, but I'm not sure how to bring it up, or if I should even try. • How do I restore GRUB 2?

  I upgraded my laptop with an SSD, moving my old HDD to where the DVD-drive was, so that I could have speed and storage. Now, I have reinstalled Ubuntu on the SSD, deleting all the partitions on the old HDD to make space for a data partition. But now the laptop doesn't even get to GRUB 2 if the HDD is plugged in! If I take it out, everything works, but as soon as I plug it in and retry to boot, I won't find GRUB. At first, I thought it was because of the boot order, but the order was OK: first the notebook hard drive (SSD) and then the CD/DVD drive (which in reality is the HDD). How can I fix it? Doing a simple grub-install /dev/sda doesn't work.. The SSD is sda, and the HDD is sdb.

• Ubuntu 13.10 vs 12.04 LTS

  I am migrating my workflow to ubuntu from windows. I have a macbook pro at home and I really enjoy being able to use the workspaces feature on ubuntu to increase my productivity. As myself being someone that isn't very familiar with doing command line things and hasn't worked with linux a whole lot other than doing basic commands like cd, ls, rm, screen, and sudo. I was wondering what you think would be the best choice for a ubuntu version. I am looking for ease of use as well as stability. I spend most of my time working with eclipse, as well as writing documents. On a side note, right now I have a pretty high end workstation, but I am using a crappy notebook 2.5 inch 1TB hard drive for my system. Would it be worth it to switch to a top of the line SSD, or would the difference not really be noticeable? How difficult would it be for a newcommer to setup the system with the os and important folders running on a SSD and then other folders for storage running on a HD.
