• What is the accepted pattern for WPF commanding in MVVM?

  I'm working on a WPF app and I understand the command pattern pretty well, but I've found that there are several different implementations of the command pattern for MVVM. There's Josh Smith's implementation in his WPF sample app, the DelegateCommand from Prism, and the CommandBindings implementation. My question is, what is the generally accepted best practice for using commands with MVVM? My application uses Prism so DelegateCommand is available to us. The devs on my team are arguing about which approach is "best." Some don't like the numerous .cs files generated for each command, others prefer that everything be wired up via CommandBindings. I'm at a loss. Can anyone shed some light?

• Visual Studio 2010 Modeling and Architecture Tools

  Jennifer Marsman (Microsoft Evangelist) and Cameron Skinner (Microsoft Visual Studio Product Unit Manager) recently stopped by our office while they were passing through Louisville on their tour to give us a presentation on the new Visual Studio 2010 Modeling and Architecture Tools. I checked out these new features when Visual Studio 2010 Beta versions originally rolled out and have been really impressed with this stuff ever since then. So it was pretty cool to actually learn some new techniques from Cameron himself since he helped write the actual code behind some of those features. If you've upgraded to Visual Studio 2010 recently I would highly recommend using the Architecture tools. They're awesome. If you want to make improvements to it, they even have their own SDK for it. There are plenty of blogs out there to show you how to use it. I've been waiting to find a tool that works like this where I can really analyze the code in solutions and projects and see how everything ties together. It's really handy if you're asked to work on a new project and aren't familiar with how it works. Just run the tools, analyze the DLL's, learn how everything works, and then you'll be ready to implement new code! It's a great tool to learn new systems quick and easy and it's all housed within the Visual Studio IDE. I just wanted to write a blog to brag about it a little bit, so I figured I'd throw this up here. It's a must have tool for Developers/Architects. • How do I add a space between two concatenated NSStrings?

  I have three string objects: NSString *firstName; NSString *lastName; NSString *fullName; The values for firstName and lastName are received from NSTextFields. I then want to concatenate the two strings and place the result in fullname. This is the code that I'm using: fullName = [firstName stringByAppendingString:lastName]; However, the result does not put a space between the two names (e.g. JohnSmith). How do I add in the space? I'd like the result to look like (John Smith).

  I'm using cURL to test a RESTFul HTTP web service. The problem is I'm normally submitting a bunch of values normally like this: curl -d "firstname=bob&lastname=smith&age=25&from=kansas&someothermodelattr=val" -H "Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded" http://mysite/people.xml -i The problem with this is my controller will then have code like this: unless params[:firstname].nil? end unless params[:lastname].nil? end // FINALLY @person = People.new(params[:firstname], params[:lastname], params[:age], params[:from]) etc.. What's the best way to simplify this? My Person model has all the validations it needs. Is there a way (assuming the request has multi-model parameters) that I can just do: @person = People.new(params[:person]) and then the initializer can take care of the rest?

• Beginner having a problem with classes

  I'm working through O'Reilly's "Learning Python" and having a problem with classes. I think I understand the concept, but in practice have stumbled upon this problem. Fron page 88-89: >>> class Worker: def __innit__(self, name, pay): self.name=name self.pay=pay def lastName(self): return self.name.split()[-1] def giveRaise(self, percent): self.pay*=(1.0+percent) Then the book says "Calling the class like a function generates instances of a new type ...etc" and gives this example. bob = Worker('Bob Smith', 50000) This gives me this error: TypeError: this constructor takes no arguments. And then I start muttering profanities. So what am I doing wrong here? Thanks for the help.

Hanging out with my friends Best food and one of my colleagues won the raffle prize. • Returning the value of an identity column during/after SQL INSERT command

  Using VS 2010, with ASP.NET, and .NET 3.0, and C#... When I use a System.Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSource and call its Insert() method to insert a new row, and that table has an identity column, I'd like my method to return the value of that column. For example, in my SQL 2005 table, I've got: Customer.Id Customer.FirstName Customer.LastName Where Customer.Id is an identity colum. When I call my method InsertNewCustomerRecord( "John", "Smith" ), I'd like to be able to return the Customer.Id that gets automatically generated in the database.   I am putting in the samle date and i am supposed to do something similar what i am asking. I want to run a query that would pull values in any two columns out 3 if it has a 1 or if any one column has a 1 it will return just those results. However it should search all three columns and in any of the three columns where it found value as 1 it should return that result. Can anyone please help me with this. Thanks in advance. • Dual monitors, screen resolution, xorg.conf.d

  I do a lot of RTFM but this one has got me stuck. I have Ubuntu Studio 12.04 Precise Pangolin with XFCE as its default desktop. My old HIS ATI Radeon 9250 graphics card was adding red crud across the screen with the generic driver, but downloading the proprietary "fglrx" driver makes it work cleanly. The trouble is the Catalyst control centre refuses to recognise my old card so I must do some manual configuring to make sure both the DVI and VGA monitors are capable of the correct screen resolution (both 1280x1024) and a dual display. It used to be easier to just edit the existing xorg.conf file and add another resolution and so forth, but now there are automatic xorg.conf.d directories (more than one) with scant documentation. Creating a generic xorg.conf with a terminal command creates every setting imaginable. What I want to do is create the simplest conf file which just tells the system the following: My VGA monitor can do 1280x1024 60Hz The two monitors together may be 2560x1024 width The VGA monitor on the right I might need to specify Xinerama if it's needed Thank you. • Integrated Reporting is Getting Closer

  Oracle recently sponsored a webcast on CFO.com titled:  The CFO Playbook on Integrated Reporting: Integrating Sustainability into Financial Disclosures.  The speakers for this webcast were James Margolis, partner with Environmental Resources Management (ERM), a global provider of environmental, health, safety, risk and sustainability consulting services (EHSS) and Mike Wallace, Director of the Global Reporting Initiative's Focal Point USA. This webcast focused on why top companies in the U.S. and overseas are incorporating sustainability content into their annual reports and other financial disclosures. The speakers discussed the benefits of integrating sustainability reporting with traditional financial reporting. They noted how investors, corporate directors, lenders and most recently, the Securities and Exchange Commission, use this information to better understand, benchmark and value companies.   I inherited a mysql database that has a table with columns like this: object_id, property, value It holds data like this: 1,first_name,Jane 1,last_name,Doe 1,age,10 1,color,red 2,first_name,Mike 2,last_name,Smith 2,age,20 2,color,blue 3,first_name,John 3,last_name,Doe 3,age,20 3,color,red ... Basically what I want to do is treat this table as a regular table. How would I get the id numbers (or all properties) of a person who is age 20 sorted by last and than first name? So far I have: SELECT object_id FROM table WHERE property = 'age' AND value = '20' union SELECT object_id FROM table WHERE property = 'color' AND value = 'red' But I'm not sure how to go about ordering the data. • Chromebook C720 - issue suspending and booting

  I recently bought an Acer C720 chromebook (Celeron, 2GB RAM, 16GB SSD) with the intention of loading Linux and using it as a cheap development laptop while on my holiday. The installation sort of went ok but initially the trackpad didn't work so I ran a script that mostly fixed that. My current issues are: Booting: it still goes to the chrome "unknown os" white screen - I have to press ctrl L - then escape then 1 then wait for 30 secs while it seems to be searching for something. Then Ubunto loads up fine. Any idea how to fix this? Suspend: if I close the lid of the laptop then it doesn't seem to suspend properly. At least when I open the lid the screen appears to be on but the screen is blank with a cursor. Nothing responds on the keyboard and I have to hold the power down to restart it. The suspend from the top menu has the same issue. Moving windows: I don't have a mouse click button so how do I move windows around the screen? Launcher bar: I've set mine to auto hide (which it does) but what exactly do you have to do to get it back? I just repeatedly jab the mouse at the side of the screen and eventually it pops up. I don't mind starting all over again but obviously a quick fix is preferred ;) Mike Ubunto 14.04.1 LTS Kernel 3.13.0-32-generic PS Sorry for so many questions.
