• Question About Abstract Classes?

  URL: Link (1) According to this wesbite .. you cannot implement Abstract classes but derive from them. This makes sense and I have read this many times. Like an interface, you cannot implement an instance of an abstract class, however you can implement methods, fields, and properties in the abstract class that can be used by the child class. But on MSDN URL: TextWriter CLass on MSDN TextWriter is an abstract class but it has two constructors defined ... and according to the MS 70-536 book, the following statement is valid: TextWriter tw = new File.CreateText("myFile.Txt") The static file class and it's CreateText method is fine by me as I have studied it on MSDN but can somebody explain this little contradiction I have found? Surely I am not the first? Why is instantaion of base abstract classes possible????

• Design pattern for extending Android's activities?

  While programming on Android, I end up writing a parent activity which is extended by several others. A bit like ListActivity. My parent activity extends Activity. if I intend to use a Map or a List, I can't use my parent activity as superclass - the child activity can only extend one activity obviously. As such I end up writing my parent activities with the same logic for Activity, ListActivity, MapActivity and so forth. What am I looking for is some sort of trait functionality/design pattern which would help in this case. Any suggestions?

  Hi all. Consider the deletion procedure on a BST, when the node to delete has two children. Let's say i always replace it with the node holding the minimum key in its right subtree. The question is: is this procedure commutative? That is, deleting x and then y has the same result than deleting first y and then x? I think the answer is no, but i can't find a counterexample, nor figure out any valid reasoning. Thank you. EDIT: Maybe i've got to be clearer. Consider the transplant(node x, node y) procedure: it replace x with y (and its subtree). So, if i want to delete a node (say x) which has two children i replace it with the node holding the minimum key in its right subtree: y = minimum(x.right) transplant(y, y.right) // extracts the minimum (it doesn't have left child) y.right = x.right y.left = x.left transplant(x,y) The question was how to prove the procedure above is not commutative.

• C++ vtable resolving with virtual inheritance

  I was curious about C++ and virtual inheritance - in particular, the way that vtable conflicts are resolved between bass and child classes. I won't pretend to understand the specifics on how they work, but what I've gleamed so far is that their is a small delay caused by using virtual functions due to that resolution. My question then is if the base class is blank - ie, its virtual functions are defined as: virtual void doStuff() = 0; Does this mean that the resolution is not necessary, because there's only one set of functions to pick from? Forgive me if this is an stupid question - as I said, I don't understand how vtables work so I don't really know any better.

• No method 'get' on backbone model save

  I'm using backbone for a reasonably complicated form. I have a number of nested models, and have been computing other variables in the parent model like so: // INSIDE PARENT MODEL computedValue: function () { var value = this.get('childModel').get('childModelProperty'); return value; } This seems to work fine for keeping my UI in sync, but as soon as I call .save() on the parent model, I get: Uncaught TypeError: Object #<Object> has no method 'get' It seems that the child model kind of temporarily stops responding. Am I doing something inherently wrong? • .NET TreeView causes application to crash when trying to check Parent node

  I have a TreeView with check boxes, and when a user checks a child node, I want to go up the tree and check each parent. However, for some reason my application blows up whenever I touch the parent node. For the nodes in my tree, I've extended TreeNode to create my own objects with some data that I need to store in them, but I still reference them as TreeNodes when checking/unchecking. • How to best share an NSMenu between multiple NSPopUpButton instances

  Hi, I need to share the same NSMenu instance between multiple popup buttons. When I create an NSPopUpButton in IB, a new menu is automatically created and inserted as a child of the NSPopUpButtonCell. At the moment, I simply create an IBOutlet NSMenuItem* standardMenu member in my MainController and connect the "menu" outlets of the popup buttons to this, but this leaves the "fake" menus in the hierarchy. Surely, there's a clean way of doing this from inside IB? Thanks in advance for any advice you might be able to give.

• Reading and writing to SysV shared memory without synchronization (use of semaphores, C/C++, Linux)

  Hi, I use SysV shared memory to let two processes communicate with each other. I do not want the code to become to complex so I wondered if I really had to use semaphores to synchronize the access to the shared memory. In my C/C++ program the parent process reads from the shared memory and the child process writes to the shared memory. I wrote two test applications to see if I could produce some kind of error like a segmentation fault, but I couldn't (Ubuntu 10.04 64bit). Even two processes writing non stop in a while loop to the same shared memory did not produce any error. I hope someone has experience concerning this matter and can tell me if I really must use semaphores to synchronize the access or if I am OK without synchronization. Thanks

I can think of a few ways to do this: Using a facility Using a component property Registering the collection as a service But all of them feel a bit... icky. What's the best way to manage this? Also, ideally I'd like to do this using the fluent API and constructor injection. • interactive (adding listeners to) DAE model in flex + papervision

  I have a DAE model that is parsed into several parts. I am able to deal with them separately, such as changing their material or colour but I am having problems adding click or hover listeners over the children. For example, lets say I have a model of a kitty where each facial feature is a child. I want to be able to hover or click the features and have a window pop up explaining the feature.   hi i am comletly new to iis and asp.net i am trying to setup bugNET on a godaddy server. i created a virtual directory and once i tried to launch the site i get this error: Parser Error Message: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS. here is complete detail of what i did. hosting: godaddy created virtual directory (child folder of root) - named: devbunk with these settings (anonymous access, directory browsing) that is all i can do to with iis on godaddy. the error tells me that i need to turn the virtual directory as an application. godaddy doesnt let me do that... how do i do it? btw, i have iis7 setup.

• How can I combine result and subquery for IN comparison (mysql)

  In order for a school project i need to create the following situation within one mysql query. The situation is as such, that a child's tags and a parent's tags need to be combined into one, and compared to a site's tags, depending on a few extra simple equals to lines. For this to happen I only see the option that the result of a subquery is combined with a sub query within that query, as such: SELECT tag.*, (SELECT group_concat(t1.id, ',', (SELECT group_concat(tag.id) FROM adcampaign INNER JOIN adcampaign_tag ON adcampaign.id = adcampaign_tag.adcampaign_id INNER JOIN tag ON adcampaign_tag.tag_id = tag.id WHERE adcampaign.id = 1)) FROM ad, ad_tag, tag AS t1 WHERE ad.id = ad_tag.ad_id AND ad_tag.tag_id = t1.id AND ad.adcampaign_id = 1 AND ad.agecategory_id = 1 AND ad.adsize_id = 1 AND ad.adtype_id = 1) as tags FROM tag WHERE tag.id IN tags But the IN comparison only returns the first result because now the tags aren't a list but a concanated string.   I am looking into thrift for serialization of data. But Document says cyclic structs - Structs can only contain structs that have been declared before it. A struct also cannot contain itself One of our requirement is Struct A List of Child items Items(Items are Struct A ) So reading requirement i can't have Struct within itself at any level? can i have it in cyclic model as i have it above. Struct is not member of Struct directly but it has some other member and it contains struct. Their document is not so well descriptive. Is it possible in Thrift? Does protobuf supports it?

But my problem is, my page has multiple link_button and blueflip div's all over the page. when i click any one of link_button all of the blueflip div's are toggling. • PHP getting blank pages after submit a form + signal Segmentation fault (11)

  I few days ago I update my macbook pro to snow leopard, and since then some php files are not showing. This is what happens: I created a php form, when going to 'http://localhost/webform.php' I can see the form just fine. Then, once I submit the form, I just get a blank page. I enable error and warnings reporting under php.ini to make sure I'm not missing something, but still I'm not getting anything, just the blank page. Then I checked under apache log files, and what I notice is that every time I submit the form I see the following line coming up under the apache logs: [Wed Apr 07 21:40:28 2010] [notice] child pid 70223 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) I'm clueless on this one. Any ideas on how to fix it?

• ScrollViewr around expanders not scrolling automatically when expander is expanded - silverlight 3

  I have several expanders inside a ScrollViewer in a fixed sized ChildWindow. The problem is when each expander expanded,the scroll will not scrolling down automatically and as a result,some of the items in the bottom will get hidden and we have to manually scroll down to see them.
