• Apache Redirect from https to https

  I am trying to redirect without a rewrite rule from eg https://www.domain.com to https://www.domain.net . I have a wildcard certificate for *.domain.net . This yields the following warning in my error_log [warn] RSA server certificate wildcard CommonName (CN) `*.domain.net' does NOT match server name!? This makes sense and I understand why the warning. I would like to ask if there is a way to use the Redirect directive to accomplish the above without the warnings. • Spilled water on MS 4000 keyboard

  I spilled some water on the left side of my Microsoft 4000 Ergonomic Keyboard xausing several keys to malfunxtion. Most started working again after leaving the keyboard upside down in a warm-air clothes dryer for an hour. I presume there is some lingering moisture whixh is xausing the keypress errors. Should i be worried about permanent damage and what xan I do to get the remaining keys baxk?   I'm finding myself in a bit of a pickle. I've been at a pretty comfortable IT group for almost a decade. I got my start here working on web development, mostly CRUD, but have demonstrated the ability to figure out more complex problems. I'm not a rock star, but I have received many compliments on my programming aptitude, and technologists and architects have commented on my ability to pick things up (for example, I recently learned a very popular web framework that shall remain nameless since I don’t want to be identified). My problem is that, over time, my responsibilities have been shifting towards work such as support or ‘development’ with some rather niche products (afraid to mention here due to potential for being identified). Some of this work, if it includes anything resembling coding, is very menial scripting in languages such as Powershell or VBScript. The vast majority of the time, however, a typical day consists of going back and forth with the product’s vendor support to send them logs and apply configuration changes or patches they recommend. I’m basically starved for some actual software development. However, even though I’m more than capable of doing that development work (and actually do a much better job at it than anything else), our boss is more interested in the kind of work I mentioned above, her reasoning being that since no one else in the organization wants to do it, it must mean job security. This has been going on for close to 3 years, and the only reason I have held on is on the promise that we would eventually get more development projects assigned to us. Well, that turned out not to be true at all. A recent talk with the boss has just made it more explicitly clear, as she told me in no uncertain terms that it’s very likely that development work (web or otherwise) would go to another group. The reason given to me is that our we don’t have enough resources in our group to handle that. So now I find myself in the position that I either have to stay in what has essentially become a dead end IT job that is tied to the fortunes of a niche stack of apps, or try to find a position that will be better for my long term career. My problem (is it a problem?), however, is that compared to others, my development projects in the last three years are very sparse in number. To compound things, projects using the latest and most popular frameworks, amount to the big fat number of just one—with no work of that kind in the foreseeable future. I am very concerned that this sparseness in my resume is a deficit, and that it will hurt my chances of landing a different job. I’m also wondering how much it will hurt me, and whether that can be ameliorated with hobby projects of my own. I guess I’m looking for opinions. Thank you very much for reading.

This completes the 4 1/2 year journey Solidsoft started on this cross government project with the addition of full electronic distribution of data and the most import piece – access for the citizen to use the service on-line. Tell Us Once (TUO) is the award-winning, cross-government programme that lets people inform central government and local authorities just once of a birth or death. In service in over 95% of councils in England, Scotland and Wales, it provides a permanent solution to the long-standing and frustrating issue of people having to notify the government multiple times. Several years ago, research showed that people had to make up to 44 contacts when reporting a death to government bodies and their local authority. The TUO service is offered as a face-to-face interview by the local authority or by telephone to a dedicated telephony service run by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). and a  now a TUO online service for death. From the bereavement section of the  Direct Gov web site the citizen is able to ‘enrich’ the standard death registration data to allow the ‘Tell Us Once’ system inform the various government departments about the death. These include the local council, DVLA, DWP, Passport service and HMRC. For the record this is an excellent example of how an SME working with a large SI partner can deliver success for government in a responsive and agile manner. For me personally it is a proud moment in which a vision I started with a very small team was followed through, extended and finally delivered by an excellent team at Solidsoft.

• Adding user to chroot environment

  I've created a chroot system in my Ubuntu using schroot and debrootstrap, based on minimal ubuntu. However whenever I can't seem to add a new user into this chroot environment. Here is what happens. I enter schroot as root and add a new user.(Tried both adduser and useradd commands) The username lists up in /etc/passwd file and I can 'su' into the new user. So far so good. When I log out of schroot, and re-enter schroot, the user I created has vanished!! There is no mention of that user in /etc/passwd either. How do I make the new user permanent?

• ldirectord refusing connection when nginx redirects from http to https

  I am running ldirector as a load balancer to an nginx front end server. If I setup a redirect from http to https and connect directly to the nginx server, all is well. Connecting via ldirector causes my connection to be refused. I can connect normally via http or https through ldirector when I don't have the redirect in place. To add to my confusion, if my application issues a redirect from http to https, it works. I am testing this via curl on the command line. (curl: (7) couldn't connect to host vs a response) I am using the standard ldirectord config (http://www.ultramonkey.org/3/topologies/config/lb/non-fwmark/linux-director/ldirectord.cf) the http and https parts. My nginx config for the redirect is simply: location / { rewrite ^(.*) https://$host$1 permanent; }

• Need to run a .sh as root on boot or login

  Still new with linux and running ubuntu 12.10 I have a wireless stick (ae2500) which has known issues that has been partially solved using ndiswrapper. However, to use it I must run the same scripts every time I reboot, effectively uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. I made a .sh file to run every time to make it easy, but I must do the sudo login everytime. There are three solutions I am looking for and although not all are necessary to solve this particular problem, I would still like to know them all for learning purposes. run scripts or file.sh on boot (as well as other programs) run scripts or file.sh automatically with root privileges make the install permanent so as not to have to go through the process every time. Any additional information that can help me regarding this that I did not think to ask (including streamlining my commands), or general knowledge, would be greatly appreciated. Following are the contents of the file. It seems that the following solutions are available: hand out an https specific robots.txt as such: User-agent: * Disallow: / and/or at app-level, 301 permanent redirect all requests (except the two above) to HTTP if they come in as HTTPS. My concern with the robots method is that, say (for some reason) google decided not to index http pages, disallowing https pages might mean that google has nothing left to index with disastrous consequences for our ranking. This means I'm inclined to go with a 301 redirect. Any thoughts?

• Nginx redirect one domain to another

  Hello, I have two domain's set up on my server. Domain 1 is configured with google apps so that mail.domain1.com goes to google's mail. However, I would like domain1.com to redirect to domain2.com. Currently in my nginx.conf file I had server { listen 80; server_name domain2.com .domain1.com; rewrite ^/(.*) http://domain2.com permanent; root /home/demo/apps/cjl/public; passenger_enabled on; rails_spawn_method smart; } When I did this Firefox popped up a "Redirect not configured correctly" error and said that it thought that the redirect would create a never ending loop. I'm wondering how to set this up and any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

• Loading another domain's content in a modal iframe - acceptable?

  Is it okay to load another page in an iframe in a modal pop-up window - in terms of legal and ethical standards around displaying 3rd party content? I remember a few years ago there was controversy and a debate about whether it was okay to load another domain's page content on your domain in a full-width iframe, with your site providing a masthead with controls for favouriting, linking etc (e.g. like StumbleUpon). I seem to recall that the consensus was, that it was okay so long as you were clearly in no way claiming ownership of the 3rd party content or attempting to modify the content and so long as there was a 'go to site' button or equivalent; and that sites could ask you to exclude them, but generally speaking, it's an acceptable practice. How acceptable would it be considered to be to load another site's page within a modal (lightbox-like) popup box (following all the above principles: clear attribution and a prominent button that kills the iframe and gives them the 3rd party original)? My expectation would be that it would follow the same principles, and be acceptable so long as these conditions were met. Note that I'm asking about the likely legitimate responses of the 3rd party sites and possible legal position, not about usability or UX. I'm aware that this should never ever ever ever ever be the standard way external links are loaded, and that 99% of the time linking to external content like this would be terrible for usability. My specific use case is one of those 1% of cases where loading a separate page in this tab actually wouldn't be the expected behaviour of a link: an interactive data visualisation tool that also acts as a 'browser' of external content (science papers underlying the data it navigates). All other links within the interactive will change something while staying on the same page. If the user clicked one of these external links by mistake (as people often do, even when they are clearly, noisily labelled) and then had to back-button back, they would lose their fine-grained position in the interactive tool (jquery bbq hashchanges being not appropriate for all elements of the tool). New window/tab will simply open the target page on the 3rd party domain. Opening a new window/tab would also be an alternative option (and has its own disadvantages) - my question is, whether this is an alternative that could be considered (in terms of acceptable practice around intellectual property etc), irrespective of which option is best for UX: which is something we'll decide the proper way, based on actual UX testing.

• Uninstalled Ubuntu, no GRLDR?

  So I'm a big fat idiot. I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my school's laptop, and here's come the time that I have to turn it back in. I wrote GRUB to the Master Boot Record, thinking it wasn't going to be permanent. So, fast forward to yesterday. I decided to hell with this, and popped in my Windows 7 CD, deleted the whole partition, formatted to NTFS, and installed Windows 7 on it. I'm surfing the web and my computer overheats [totally typical] I boot up, and get this: Try (hd0,0): FAT32: No GRLDR Try (hd0,1): invalid or null Try (hd0,2): invalid or null Try (hd0,3): invalid or null Try (hd1,0): NTFS5: No grldr Try (hd1,1): invalid or null Try (hd1,2): invalid or null Try (hd1,3): invalid or null Cannot find GRLDR. Press space bar to hold the screen, any other key to boot previous MBR... Timeout: 5 The timeout part just counts down to 0 from 5. I need to turn in this thing before tomorrow, please please please can someone help me out?

• Any ideas on reducing lag in terrain generation?

  Ok so here's the deal. I've written an isometric engine that generates terrain based on camera values using 2D perlin noise. I planned on doing 3D but first I need to work out the lag issues I'm having. I will try to explain how I am doing this so that maybe someone can spot where I am going wrong. I know it should not be this laggy. There is the abstract class Block which right now just contains render(). BlockGrass, etc. extend this class and each has code in the render function to create a textured quad at the given position. Then there is the class Chunk which has the function Generate() and setBlocksInArea(). Generate uses 2D perlin noise to make a height map and stores the heights in a 2D array. It stores the positions of each block it generates in blockarray[x][y][z]. The chunks are 8x8x128. In the main game class there is a 3D array called blocksInArea. The blocks in this array are what gets rendered. When a chunk generates, it adds its blocks to this array at the correct index. It is like this so chunks can be saved to the hard drive (even though they aren't yet) but there can still be optimization with the rendering that you wouldn't have if you rendered each chunk separately. Here's where the laggy part comes in: When the camera moves to a new chunk, a row of chunks generates on the end of the axis that the camera moved on. But it still has to move the other chunks up/down in the blocksInArea (render) array. It does this by calculating the new position in the array and doing the Chunk.setBlocksInArea(): for(int x = 0; x < 8; x++){ for(int y = 0; y < 8; y++){ nx = x+(coordX - camCoordX)*8 ny = y+(coordY - camCoordY)*8 for(int z = 0; z < height[x][y]; z++){ blockarray[x][y][z] = Game.blocksInArea[nx][ny][z]; } } } My reasoning was that this would be much faster than doing the perlin noise all over again, but there are still little spikes of lag when you move in between chunks. Edit: Would it be possible to create a 3 dimensional array list so that shifting of chunks within the array would not be neccessary?

• custom domain point to tumblr blog

  My domain mydomain.com is registered with godaddy. I wish to host my tumblr blog on this domain with nearlyfreespeech.net hosting. My active nameservers at godaddy already point to my authoritative ones at NFS.net which is working. However i'm baffled of the correct configuration to set to point to my Tumblr. Preferably id like (A) my domain http://mydomain.com to host the blog and have http://www.mydomain.com redirect also to http://mydomain.com If this is too difficult my next preference is (B) to have http://www.mydomain.com host the blog whilst http://mydomain.com redirects to http://www.mydomain.com My 3rd preference is to have (C) a sub-domain like http://tumblr.mydomain.com or http://tumblr.mydomain.com to host the blog and i guess have http://mydomain.com and http://www.mydomain.com both redirect to it. I've tried having two aliases mydomain.com and www.mydomain.com pointing to my permanent NFS ip at mydomain.nfshost.com and when i try to add: (1) an A record pointing mydomain.com to the ip 66.6.44.4 as per Tumblr's instructions it tells me i already have the bare domain as an alias so i cant do that. (2) the A record on the www.mydomain.com alias. I can do this with either www.mydomain.com set as an alias or not. But when i tried this with mydomain.com set as the canonical name the result when visiting either mydomain.com or www.mydomain.com was them both continually redirecting to eachother until an error was thrown. So i was wondering if there is a ninja that could save me some hairpulling and tell me the correct way to config A, or else B, or else C.
