• Internet connection issues after installing Windows Phone 8 SDK

  first of all I must admit, that I'm not good in all this network stuff. I am using Windows 8 OS. On my laptop (Lenovo G570) I have installed Windows Phone 8 SDK and shortly after this I started having weird issues with internet connection. When I start my laptop, internet usually works fine, but after a few minutes it starts slowing down so much, that I'm not able to open a single page. Rebooting doesn't work, after several disabling and enabling network adapter, it usually works again for a few minutes and then again it stops. I'm sure it has something to do with Windows Phone 8 SDK, because problems started with this. With SDK there was also installed "vEthernet (Internal Ethernet Port Windows Phone Emulator Internal Switch)" network adapter. It is worth to note that problems occur mostly in my school network, not at home. Both at home and school I am using Wi-Fi connection. I hope the information given are enough to help me. • 3-4 old computers = general purpose cluster?

  I have 3 old computers lying around right now running a P2 at 800 MHz(?), Intel Mobile 1.6 GHz, AMD Athlon XP 2000+ at 1.66 GHz, and (might not use this) P4 at 2.7 GHz, all with 512 MB Ram, and am considering clustering them together for fun/knowledge. They would be running an undecided version of linux, preferably ubuntu based. The issue is what I want to use it for: general computing and occasional video encoding. By general computing I mean day to day tasks. However I'm not sure if every program started by a single X session is going to exist on the same machine, defeating the purpose of such a system. Will programs be split up or exist on one machine? Second, assuming this is running 100baseT ethernet (not sure if the PCI slot itself could handle Gigabit), would the speed of having a program exist over the network be an issue? It seems that the constant asking of various things in RAM would be quite slow. And before you say "buy another computer!", that's not the point of this question. I'm asking would it be usable, not necessarily practical. And yes I know, this is going to be extreamly power consuming.

And how could I trace, where it comes from?

• Best way to restrict FTP access to a single directory?

  I have a VPS running Ubuntu 10.04, and I'd like to give someone SFTP access to a single directory, but prevent them from seeing anything else on the system. What's the best way to pull this off? I considered removing "everyone" permissions from everything on the system, but that seems like a really blunt tool for this problem (and one that'll cause other issues) - I'm hoping there's a better option here. Edit: I appreciate the answers! (And I learned a bunch reading/researching through them). • Windows boot iso file without press any key

  I'm trying to make an iso file which will boot without any key-press from the user. In Windows iso files, when booting from a cd, there is a message "press any key to boot from cd" which will wait for 5-10 seconds and then, if there is no key-press, it will boot from HD. I searched the web for how to remove this message, and do not press any key and all the answers were "delete bootfix.bin" from the iso. I edited the iso (I've tried several iso files) to remove the bootfix.bin, but now the iso is not correct. Do you have any suggestions?

• Moving Domain Controller Guests between Hyper-V Hosts

  We're moving our domain controller to a new Hyper-V host. I read it on TechNet about not using export on a VM running as DC (although I saw a lot of answers on TechNet suggesting doing so to move DC). What we plan to do is shutdown the VM, move the VHD to the new Hyper-V host, then create a new VM using that VHD. I don't think USN rollback would occur since it's like shutting down the VM and starting it back up. We have another Hyper-V host with a DC guest that will be running during the migration. All the hosts and VMs are running Windows Server 2008 R2. Is it a good way to move virtualize DC b/t hosts? If not, how should I proceed?

• How to force Windows XP to rename a file with a special character?

  I have a song that Windows can't play because there is a question mark in the name of the file. "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?.ogg" // as an example So I try to rename it and Windows complains whether I try it in Explorer or from command prompt. Error I get when trying to copy, rename, or move is: The Filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect Is there a Windows way to force a rename in this case? Update I'll keep an eye on this question, but after 13 answers and many attempts (aside form 3rd party solutions) it seems that Windows can't do this (or at least my windows can't, no short names). So I'm accepting the answer which was my original solution anyway of using Linux. It would be nice to see Windows handle this somehow, so don't stop just because I've accepted this answer, the question still stands!

This webview should be accessible via myserver.com/icinga (as the debian autoconfig for apache will do). I have the following lines in my nginx config: location /icinga { root /usr/share/icinga/htdocs; index index.html; auth_basic "Restricted"; auth_basic_user_file /etc/icinga/htpasswd.users; } However, i get an error 404 and a log entry that says: *10 open() "/usr/share/icinga/htdocs/icinga" failed (2: No such file or directory), So it seems that nginx appends the location value to the root value. I think i figured it out how to prevent this some time ago, but i did not document it for myself and have forgotten how to do it. And now i can't fix it for myself. Can you tell me how to prevent this behaviour?

  Hello, and apologies if this is a duplicate - if you could point me in the direction of any existing answers, that would be great. I have a set of date ranges in Excel, each of which has some kind of label. e.g. LabelA 01/01/10 31/01/10 LabelB 01/02/10 28/02/10 LabelC 01/03/10 31/03/10 If I have another date, I would like to look up the label relating to the date range within which this date falls. e.g. For 15/02/10 I would like to return LabelB. I know that the date ranges will not overlap, although there could be a gap between the end date of one, and the start date of the next.

  I just need a technical solution for the sake of my group's shared passwords, projects, works, etc. safety. Our network has Active Directory with public/groups/users and NTFS permissions, under a Windows Server 2003 which will soon migrate to Windows Server 2008 R2. Our IT crowd is small, consisting of 2 DBAs, 4 designers, 6 developers (including me), 2 netadmins and (a lot of) tech supporters, everyone has local admin rights. Those 2 network admins weren't the ones who set the network up, they just took the lift recently when the previous ones quit. We usually find them laughing at private contents from users stored in the groups AD, sabotaging documents that don't match their personal tastes and, finally, this week we found out they stole a project we (developers and DBAs) were finishing and, long before, they presented it to the CEO as theirs without us knowing. I'm a systems analyst, and initially my group decided to store critical content, like shared passwords, inside encrypted .zip files. Unfortunately we couldn't do the same to the other hundreds of folders and files, which included the stolen project, because the zipping process would take too long for every update. We also tried an encrypted Subversion repository under SSL, but there are many dummies (~38 atm) involved in the projects that have trouble using TortoiseSVN when contributing, and very oftenly we had to fix messed up updates. Well, I think these two give the idea of what we've been trying to reach. So, is there a practical "individual" protection for our extensive data or my hope can already be euthanized? P.S.: Seriously, at the place where I live/work, political corruption gone the wildest, so denounce related options are likely impracticable. Yet both netadmins have strong "political bond" with the CEO and the President, hence their lousy behavior and our failed delation attempts.

• Route a specific user's traffic via VPN but still allow local networking

  So, I want to route certain traffic via a VPN connection and the rest via my normal Internet connection. I want to run several different programs and most of them don't support binding to a specific network interface (tun0 in my case). I've managed to send a specific user's traffic via the VPN following the answers given here: iptables - Target to route packet to specific interface? But unfortunately, when I run a server that connects to the Internet and has a web interface running on a local IP (127.0.0.1/192.168.0.*), all the Internet traffic correctly goes via tun0, but I'm unable to connect to the web interface from a local IP as a different user. When I log in as the VPN-ified user, I can access services running on local IPs, but other users/machines can't access any servers I start. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

• Windows Server 2008 freezes when I run programs as administrator

  I am working on a machine running Windows Server 2008. Every program I have tried to run (firefox, notepad, wordpad) works fine, but if I right-click on any item on the desktop or the start menu and select "Run as Administrator" it freezes. I can move the mouse around and open/close the start menu, but the items in the start menu do not change color when the mouse hovers over them. I googled for answers for some time but had no luck. Does anyone have any ideas that I could try? (Update: I forgot to mention that the machine is virtual and I am using VMWare Workstation. In order to answer the questions below, I have been going to the same snapshot of the system each time. This lets me start the system in the exact same place each time in order to answer your questions and test.) (Update: When I run any process as administrator and it freezes, I can start task manager, but I cannot see the new process (notepad, etc...) )

• Is it possible to theme Windows 7 like XP?

  Everybody seems to mean the window frame colour and a set of desktop background pictures when they're talking about Windows 7 themes. Does anybody remember what themes used to be in Windows XP? You could actually alter the appearance of the window frame, how close buttons and menu popups looked, put a texture on the taskbar, all those funny things. Microsoft themselves have published a number of XP themes over time (Luna on XP, Royal on MCE2005, Zune later on). I don't say that most of those and the numerous third party XP themes were beautiful or even practical. But it was possible to create something nice. In Windows 7 (I suppress the existence of Windows Vista...) such a theme could well be used to increase readability to a level before Aero Glass again. I mean, you cannot really tell whether a Glass window is active or not. I've been tweaking the colours and transparency levels a lot recently but the only safe indicator is the close button: it's red when the window is active, it's colourless otherwise. Then there's the window title. It is always painted black, on however dark a background. Again, regardless of whether the window is active or not. Turning off Aero is not an option in Windows 7 anymore. Classic design looks just ugly there. It already wasn't exactly looking good on XP with the wide start menu. So, can we increase the readability of the Windows 7 UI with themes like in XP or didn't Microsoft learn a thing since the Windows 7 Preview "Vista"?

• Using javascript, show a certain amount of divs based on an answer

  I'm building a form that first asks if you have 'foo'. If the answer is 'Yes', a div appears and asks 'How many foo do you have'? Based on the quantity answered, I'd like to show only that many divs. Thus if the user answers 1, only the first div will show. If they answer three, the first three will show. I have it set so that if the user answers no, the question of the amount remains hidden, but if they answer yes, they would be prompted for the quantity. • Many to many self join through junction table

  I have an EF model that can self-reference through an intermediary class to define a parent/child relationship. I know how to do a pure many-to-many relationship using the Map command, but for some reason going through this intermediary class is causing problems with my mappings. The intermediary class provides additional properties for the relationship. If I build it without the modelBinder logic in place then I get two ID columns for Child and two ID columns for Parent in my ChildRecord table. This makes sense since it tries to auto create the navigation properties from Equipment and doesn't know that there are already properties in ChildRecord to fulfill this need. • Windows 7 unreasonable ram usage

  I have a fresh install of windows 7, and my ram in normal startup goes up to 2.5 GB. I looked at task manager, and there's at least 1.5 GB missing from there and in resource monitor as well. No indication of what's using that ram. Can someone tell me how I can find out what's consuming my memory? I believe it's a virus but none of the free antivirus programs tracked it down. EDIT I added the pictures bellow. If this is normal usage of windows 7 as some answers imply... then I don't get this at all. P.S My windows 8 Installation was running bellow 2.5 gb actually it was 1. something, until recently that I transferred some files from another computer which had the same problem that mine has now. I deleted windows 8 and installed 7, since i would do that anyway. And now I'm getting high memory usage in windows 7 as well.

• How to reduce the windows network browsing broadcast timeout or disable this function?

  Hello everyone. My residential network is make of 300 vlans (one per room). To browse them we are using a wins server. My problem is that when I try to browse the network, windows first tries to find the neighborhood using some broadcast, and only then does it query the wins server. This "broadcast period" lasts exactly 30 seconds and is very annoying. Can I reduce it, or can I completely disable this broadcast network discovery feature from my system? • How can I redirect HTTPS(S) traffic to anothr gateway?

  I have a network like 192.168.0.0/15 with the default gateway set to 192.168.0.1. Al the workstations of the network use this gateway for all kind of accesses to the Internet. Now I am testing a new Internet connection with another provider and for this I am using a second gateway on the same subnet with 192.168.0.2 as IP address. I want to redirect only HTTP and HTTPS traffic to this second gateway without touching the address of the default gateway set inside every workstation. How can I accomplish this task? What I have to change inside the first's gateway firewall configuration or routes? I tried with a dnat like DNAT loc:192.168.0.1 loc:192.168.0.2 tcp 80 but nothing worked. I use Shorewall for simplicity in configuration but I can understand even theorical answers which I will try to adapt to my case

• Why is there no 64-bit Linux Firefox build?

  It seems that I have to build my own 64-bit Firefox for Linux, as Mozilla won't support it until Firefox 4. Why is this? It looks to me as though it works fine, although without some of the speed improvements to the Javascript engine which the 32-bit version gets. (Edit: Yes I could run the 32-bit version but I'm trying to keep my system clear of 32-bit cruft and libraries etc, and all the plug-ins worked fine in 3.0.11 64-bit unofficial builds.) Update : No longer relevant as Mozilla provide 64-bit builds, but they don't show them on the download pages of mozilla.org, just on the ftp site as mentioned in one of the answers below.

• IE Search Provider: Specifying gTLD / Country-Specific Site

  I am based in the UK, and as such typically use google.co.uk as my search engine. However, my employer is based in continental Europe, and thus my internet proxy is located overseas. As a result, IP geo-location presents a location outside of the UK. Google detects this, and as a result will redirect my searches from the address bar to a foreign Google domain. This leads to "local" answers having a higher ranking, many of which are not written in English language! Is there a specific search provider / URL I can give to IE which will use a specific gTLD of google (.co.uk), rather than performing the location-based redirect?

  If there are two physically separate hard drives, should they be treated as two pre-defined partitions? If yes: should they be treated as two primary partitions (including one or two of them can become extended partition(s) and be further subdivided into logical partitions)? Or they (or one part of each) can be treated as two logical partitions of a extended partition? Thanks! I intended to ask if there can be a primary/logical partition that are partially on both hard drives? And if there can be a logical partition on a hard drive and another logical partition on another hard, and the two logical partitions belong to the same extended partition? I guess the answers to both questions are no?

• Ways to improve completeness of files for data recovery and scanning?

  I am using R-studio for data recovery on one of my ntfs partition. There is a pdf file about 16MB, but the software can only recover 15MB of it. So I am thinking about what ways can be used to improve the quality of scanning and recovery by the software? I am looking around its preferences. I am not quite sure whether there are some adjustable parameters for scanning and recovery which can be fine-tuned to improve the quality? R-studio has a free demo version, for which scanning is free,but recovery isn't. • French accents on a PC with US keyboard??

  My laptop has a US keyboard, and I need to write some French, with accents. I know there's a painful way to do it with combinations of the alt key and the ascii code alt-codes, but I was wondering if there was an easier way to do it. PS: Since the question is closed (but the answers no great) I thought I'd add this addendum. • Create a home virtual network

  I can't seem to get answers to this question. I want to setup up 2-3 computers in my house to run Linux based virtual machines fed from my dedicated Arch Linux server. I need them to have full sound and video support. At my workplace we use VMware (View), but that is too cost prohibited for me to deploy for my wife and the two 10 year olds. I have tried Virtualbox machines and they are fine, but I cannot get sound working. Any help/hints would be greatly appreciated.

• Networking conflict - What is the most common default computer name for Windows?

  I recently had to change the name of my computer to log onto a public wi-fi spot, because a computer with my name was already logged on. (I asked a guy there what to do after it said there was already a computer named "(omitted)" logged on.) I've never been at a wifi spot you had to log into before. I didn't even notice what the computer's name was before. My question is what are the most common default computer names. I'm curious. How often does this sort of problem happen? (For some reason my previous post was closed as off topic - so now I included the reason I'm asking. If it's still considered off topic (networking conflicts) I'll take it elsewhere, but the other forums I know of (ehow.com, answers.yahoo.com) are full of people that couldn't begin to answer a question like this.)
