  • What's the best name for a non-mutating "add" method on an immutable collection?

    - by Jon Skeet
    Sorry for the waffly title - if I could come up with a concise title, I wouldn't have to ask the question. Suppose I have an immutable list type. It has an operation Foo(x) which returns a new immutable list with the specified argument as an extra element at the end. So to build up a list of strings with values "Hello", "immutable", "world" you could write: var empty = new ImmutableList<string>(); var list1 = empty.Foo("Hello"); var list2 = list1.Foo("immutable"); var list3 = list2.Foo("word"); (This is C# code, and I'm most interested in a C# suggestion if you feel the language is important. It's not fundamentally a language question, but the idioms of the language may be important.) The important thing is that the existing lists are not altered by Foo - so empty.Count would still return 0. Another (more idiomatic) way of getting to the end result would be: var list = new ImmutableList<string>().Foo("Hello"); .Foo("immutable"); .Foo("word"); My question is: what's the best name for Foo? EDIT 3: As I reveal later on, the name of the type might not actually be ImmutableList<T>, which makes the position clear. Imagine instead that it's TestSuite and that it's immutable because the whole of the framework it's a part of is immutable... (End of edit 3) Options I've come up with so far: Add: common in .NET, but implies mutation of the original list Cons: I believe this is the normal name in functional languages, but meaningless to those without experience in such languages Plus: my favourite so far, it doesn't imply mutation to me. Apparently this is also used in Haskell but with slightly different expectations (a Haskell programmer might expect it to add two lists together rather than adding a single value to the other list). With: consistent with some other immutable conventions, but doesn't have quite the same "additionness" to it IMO. And: not very descriptive. Operator overload for + : I really don't like this much; I generally think operators should only be applied to lower level types. I'm willing to be persuaded though! The criteria I'm using for choosing are: Gives the correct impression of the result of the method call (i.e. that it's the original list with an extra element) Makes it as clear as possible that it doesn't mutate the existing list Sounds reasonable when chained together as in the second example above Please ask for more details if I'm not making myself clear enough... EDIT 1: Here's my reasoning for preferring Plus to Add. Consider these two lines of code: list.Add(foo); list.Plus(foo); In my view (and this is a personal thing) the latter is clearly buggy - it's like writing "x + 5;" as a statement on its own. The first line looks like it's okay, until you remember that it's immutable. In fact, the way that the plus operator on its own doesn't mutate its operands is another reason why Plus is my favourite. Without the slight ickiness of operator overloading, it still gives the same connotations, which include (for me) not mutating the operands (or method target in this case). EDIT 2: Reasons for not liking Add. Various answers are effectively: "Go with Add. That's what DateTime does, and String has Replace methods etc which don't make the immutability obvious." I agree - there's precedence here. However, I've seen plenty of people call DateTime.Add or String.Replace and expect mutation. There are loads of newsgroup questions (and probably SO ones if I dig around) which are answered by "You're ignoring the return value of String.Replace; strings are immutable, a new string gets returned." Now, I should reveal a subtlety to the question - the type might not actually be an immutable list, but a different immutable type. In particular, I'm working on a benchmarking framework where you add tests to a suite, and that creates a new suite. It might be obvious that: var list = new ImmutableList<string>(); list.Add("foo"); isn't going to accomplish anything, but it becomes a lot murkier when you change it to: var suite = new TestSuite<string, int>(); suite.Add(x => x.Length); That looks like it should be okay. Whereas this, to me, makes the mistake clearer: var suite = new TestSuite<string, int>(); suite.Plus(x => x.Length); That's just begging to be: var suite = new TestSuite<string, int>().Plus(x => x.Length); Ideally, I would like my users not to have to be told that the test suite is immutable. I want them to fall into the pit of success. This may not be possible, but I'd like to try. I apologise for over-simplifying the original question by talking only about an immutable list type. Not all collections are quite as self-descriptive as ImmutableList<T> :)

  • ASP.NET MVC - Views location Problem : The view 'Index' or its master was not found

    - by user326873
    Hi all, I've create an asp.net MVC 2 project, it works fine!! I've been asked to integrate the project in an existing web project in classic asp.net (I've add the folder containing the source, and not make a new project, because they have to bee in same project) I've configured my web.config file <pages pageBaseType="System.Web.UI.Page" > <controls> <add tagPrefix="asp" namespace="System.Web.UI" assembly="System.Web.Extensions, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" /> <add tagPrefix="asp" namespace="System.Web.UI.WebControls" assembly="System.Web.Extensions, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" /> </controls> <namespaces> <add namespace="System.Web.Mvc" /> <add namespace="System.Web.Mvc.Ajax" /> <add namespace="System.Web.Mvc.Html" /> <add namespace="System.Web.Routing" /> <add namespace="System.Linq" /> <add namespace="System.Collections.Generic" /> <add namespace="SearchApp.Helpers.CheckBoxList"/> <add namespace="SearchApp.Helpers.Pager"/> </namespaces> </pages> <httpModules> <add name="ScriptModule" type="System.Web.Handlers.ScriptModule, System.Web.Extensions, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" /> <add name="UrlRoutingModule" type="System.Web.Routing.UrlRoutingModule, System.Web.Routing, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" /> </httpModules> <!--- END MVC config section--> and my global.asax file (I'm working under IIS 5.1) : public static void RegisterRoutes(RouteCollection routes) { routes.IgnoreRoute("{resource}.axd/{*pathInfo}"); routes.MapRoute( "SearchApp", // Route name "SearchApp/{controller}.aspx/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters new { controller = "Search", action = "Index", id = "" } // Parameter defaults ); } protected void Application_Start(Object sender, EventArgs e) { AreaRegistration.RegisterAllAreas(); RegisterRoutes(RouteTable.Routes); } The hierarchy of the project is (I can’t find how to insert Image in the post): +Project ++MVC2AppFolder +++Controller ++++SearchController.cs +++Views ++++Search +++++Index.aspx ++global.asax ++web.config as you can see the global.asax is not in the MVC App folder when I try to access the page Search/index.aspx using this url http://localhost/cstfwsrv/SearchApp/Search.aspx/Index[^] have the following error : I The view 'Index' or its master was not found.   • problem with sqldatasource and data binding

    I am trying to pull out data from the table I had from the database according to the id which is passed from the URL. However I always get data from id= 1? Why? FYI I took this code directly from the ClubWebsite starter kit and copy and paste it to my project to make several changes, the ClubWebsite one worked fine.. but this one doesn't and can't find any reason why because they both looked exactly the same. <%@ Page Title="" Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/MasterPage.master" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="Events_View.aspx.cs" Inherits="Events_View" %> <asp:Content ID="Content1" ContentPlaceHolderID="head" Runat="Server"> </asp:Content> <asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="splash" Runat="Server"> <div id="splash4">&nbsp;</div> </asp:Content> <asp:Content ID="Content3" ContentPlaceHolderID="ContentPlaceHolder1" Runat="Server"> <div id="content"> <div class="post"> <asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:ClubDatabase %>" SelectCommand="SELECT dbo.Events.id, dbo.Events.starttime, dbo.events.endtime, dbo.Events.title, dbo.Events.description, dbo.Events.staticURL, dbo.Events.address FROM dbo.Events"> <SelectParameters> <asp:Parameter Type="Int32" DefaultValue="1" Name="id"></asp:Parameter> </SelectParameters> </asp:SqlDataSource> <asp:FormView ID="FormView1" runat="server" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource1" DataKeyNames="id" AllowPaging="false" Width="100%"> <ItemTemplate> <h2> <asp:Label Text='<%# Eval("title") %>' runat="server" ID="titleLabel" /> </h2> <div> <br /> <p> <asp:Label Text='<%# Eval("address") %>' runat="server" ID="addressLabel" /> </p> <p> <asp:Label Text='<%# Eval("starttime","{0:D}") %>' runat="server" ID="itemdateLabel" /> <br /> <asp:Label Text='<%# ShowDuration(Eval("starttime"),Eval("endtime")) %>' runat="server" ID="Label1" /> </p> </div> <p> <asp:Label Text='<%# Eval("description") %>' runat="server" ID="descriptionLabel" /> </p> </ItemTemplate> </asp:FormView> <div class="dashedline"> </div> </div> </div> </asp:Content> using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web; using System.Web.UI; using System.Web.UI.WebControls; using System.Data.SqlClient; using System.Configuration; using System.Data; public partial class Events_View : System.Web.UI.Page { const int INVALIDID = -1; protected void Page_Load(object sender, System.EventArgs e) { SqlDataSource1.SelectParameters["id"].DefaultValue = System.Convert.ToString(EventID); } public int EventID { get { int m_EventID; object id = ViewState["EventID"]; if (id != null) { m_EventID = (int)id; } else { id = Request.QueryString["EventID"]; if (id != null) { m_EventID = System.Convert.ToInt32(id); } else { m_EventID = 1; } ViewState["EventID"] = m_EventID; } return m_EventID; } set { ViewState["EventID"] = value; } } protected void FormView1_DataBound(object sender, System.EventArgs e) { DataRowView view = (DataRowView)(FormView1.DataItem); object o = view["staticURL"]; if (o != null && o != DBNull.Value) { string staticurl = (string)o; if (staticurl != "") { Response.Redirect(staticurl); } } } protected string ShowLocationLink(object locationname, object id) { if (id != null && id != DBNull.Value) { return "At <a href='Locations_view.aspx?LocationID=" + Convert.ToString(id) + "'>" + (string)locationname + "</a><br/>"; } else { return ""; } } protected string ShowDuration(object starttime, object endtime) { DateTime starttimeDT = (DateTime)starttime; if (endtime != null && endtime != DBNull.Value) { DateTime endtimeDT = (DateTime)endtime; if (starttimeDT.Date == endtimeDT.Date) { if (starttimeDT == endtimeDT) { return starttimeDT.ToString("h:mm tt"); } else { return starttimeDT.ToString("h:mm tt") + " - " + endtimeDT.ToString("h:mm tt"); } } else { return "thru " + endtimeDT.ToString("M/d/yy"); } } else { return starttimeDT.ToString("h:mm tt"); } } }

  • Webcam api error when accessed from ASP.NET Server-side code

    - by Eyla
    I'm tring to use webcam api with asp.net and C#. I included all the library and references I needed for that. the original code I'm use was for windows application and I'm trying to convert it to asp.net web application. I have start capturing button when I click it, it should start capturing but it gives me an error. the error at this line: hHwnd = capCreateCaptureWindowA(iDevice.ToString(), (WS_VISIBLE | WS_CHILD), 0, 0, 640, 480, picCapture.Handle.ToInt32(), 0); and the error message is: Error 1 'System.Web.UI.WebControls.Image' does not contain a definition for 'Handle' and no extension method 'Handle' accepting a first argument of type 'System.Web.UI.WebControls.Image' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) • How do I update ItemTemplate after scrambling ObservableCollection(Of ObservableCollection(Of object

    - by user342195
    I am learning vb.net, wpf and xaml with the help of sites like this one. The project I am currently working on is a 4 x 4 slide puzzle. I cannot get the buttons in the grid to scramble to start a new game when calling a new game event. Any help will be greatly appreciated. If no answer is can be provide, a good resource to research would help as well. Thank you for your time. • java - register problem

    - by Jake
    Hi! When i try to register a person with the name Eric for example, and then again registrating Eric it works. This should not happen with the code i have. Eric should not be registrated if theres already an Eric in the list. Here is my full code: import java.util.*; import se.lth.cs.pt.io.*; class Person { private String name; private String nbr; public Person (String name, String nbr) { this.name = name; this.nbr = nbr; } public String getName() { return name; } public String getNumber() { return nbr; } public String toString() { return name + " : " + nbr; } } class Register { private List<Person> personer; public Register() { personer = new ArrayList<Person>(); } // boolean remove(String name) { // } private Person findName(String name) { for (Person person : personer) { if (person.getName() == name) { return person; } } return null; } private boolean containsName(String name) { return findName(name) != null; } public boolean insert(String name, String nbr) { if (containsName(name)) { return false; } Person person = new Person(name, nbr); personer.add(person); Collections.sort(personer, new A()); return true; } //List<Person> findByPartOfName(String partOfName) { //} //List<Person> findByNumber(String nbr) { //} public List<Person> findAll() { List<Person> copy = new ArrayList<Person>(); for (Person person : personer) { copy.add(person); } return copy; } public void printList(List<Person> personer) { for (Person person : personer) { System.out.println(person.toString()); } } } class A implements Comparator < Person > { @Override public int compare(Person o1, Person o2) { if(o1.getName() != null && o2.getName() != null){ return o1.getName().compareTo(o2.getName()); } return 0; } } class TestScript { public static void main(String[] args) { new TestScript().run(); } void test(String msg, boolean status) { if (status) { System.out.println(msg + " -- ok"); } else { System.out.printf("==== FEL: %s ====\n", msg); } } void run() { Register register = new Register(); System.out.println("Vad vill du göra:"); System.out.println("1.   • Correct way to edit and update complex viewmodel objects using asp.net-mvc2 and entity framework

    - by jslatts
    I have a table in my database with a one to many relationship to another table: ParentObject ID Name Description ChildObject ID Name Description ParentObjectID AnotherObjectID The objects are mapped into Entity Framework and exposed through a data access class. It seemed like ViewModels are recommended when the data to be displayed greatly differs from the domain object, so I created a ViewModel as follows: public class ViewModel { public IList<ParentObject> ParentObjects { get; set; } public ParentObject selectedObject { get; set; } public IList<ChildObject> ChildObjects { get; set; } } I have a view that displays a list of ParentObjects and when clicked will allow a ChildObject to be modified saved. <% using (Html.BeginForm()) { %> <table> <% foreach (var parent in Model.ParentObjects) { %> <tr> <td> ObjectID [<%= Html.Encode(parent.ID)%>] </td> <td> <%= Html.Encode(parent.Name)%> </td> <td> <%= Html.Encode(parent.Description)%> </td> </tr> <% } %> </table> <% if (Model.ParentObject != null) { %> <div> Name:<br /> <%= Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.ParentObject.Name) %> <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.ParentObject.Name, "*")%> </div> <div> Description:<br /> <%= Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.ParentObject.Description) %> <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.ParentObject.Description, "*")%> </div> <div> Child Objects </div> <% for (int i = 0; i < Model.ParentObject.ChildObjects.Count(); i++) { %> <div> <%= Html.DisplayTextFor(sd => sd.ChildObjects[i].Name) %> </div> <div> <%= Html.HiddenFor(sd => sd.ChildObjects[i].ID )%> <%= Html.TextBoxFor( sd => sd.ChildObjects[i].Description) %> <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(sd => sd.ChildObjects[i].Description, "*") %> </div> <% } } } %> This all works fine. My question is around the best way to update the EF objects and persist the changes back to the database. I initially tried: [HttpPost] public ActionResult Edit(ViewModel viewModel) { ParentObject parent = myRepository.GetParentObjectByID(viewModel.SelectedObject.ID); if ((!ModelState.IsValid) || !TryUpdateModel(parent, "SelectedObject", new[] { "Name", "Description" })) { || !TryUpdateModel(parent.ChildObjects, "ChildObjects", new[] { "Name", "Description" })) { //Code to handle failure and return the current model snipped return View(viewModel); } myRepository.Save(); return RedirectToAction("Edit"); } When I try to save a change to the child object, I get this exception: Entities in 'MyEntities.ChildObject' participate in the 'FK_ChildObject_AnotherObject' relationship. 0 related 'AnotherObject' were found. 1 'AnotherObject' is expected. Investigation on StackOverflow and generally googling led me to this blog post that seems to describe my problem: TryUpdateModel() does not correctly handle nested collections. Apparently, (and stepping through the debugger confirms this) it creates a new ChildObject instead of associating with the EF objects from my instantiated context. My hacky work around is this: if (viewModel.ChildObjects.Count > 0) { foreach (ChildObject modelChildObject in viewModel.ChildObjects) { ChildObject childToUpdate = ParentObject.ChildObject.Where(a => a.ID == modelChildObject.ID).First(); childToUpdate.Name = modelChildObject.Name; } } This seems to work fine. My question to you good folks: Is there correct way to do this? I tried following the suggestion for making a custom model binder per the blog link I posted above but it didn't work (there was an issue with reflection) and I needed to get something going ASAP. PS - I tried to cleanup the code to hide specific information, so beware I may have hosed something up. I mainly just want to know if other people have solved this problem. Thanks!

  • SecurityException in Sandboxed AppDomain

    - by Galen
    I'm attempting to use C# as a scripting language using CSharpCodeProvider (using VS2010 and .NET 4.0). I want the scripts to be run in a restricted AppDomain with minimal permissions. Currently, I'm getting an exception while trying to instantiate a class in the AppDomain (The call to CreateInstanceAndUnwrap()). Here is some simplified code that reproduces the exception: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using Microsoft.CSharp; using System.CodeDom; using System.CodeDom.Compiler; using System.Security; using System.Security.Policy; using System.Security.Permissions; using System.Reflection; using System.Runtime.Remoting; namespace ConsoleApp { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { // set permissions PermissionSet permissions = new PermissionSet(PermissionState.None); permissions.AddPermission(new SecurityPermission( SecurityPermissionFlag.Execution)); AppDomainSetup adSetup = new AppDomainSetup(); adSetup.ApplicationBase = AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory; //Create a list of fully trusted assemblies Assembly[] asms = AppDomain.CurrentDomain.GetAssemblies(); List<StrongName> sns = new List<StrongName>(); for (int x = 0; x < asms.Length; x++) { StrongName sn = asms[x].Evidence.GetHostEvidence<StrongName>(); if (sn != null && sns.Contains(sn) == false) sns.Add(sn); } //this includes: "mscorlib, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089" AppDomain domain = AppDomain.CreateDomain("NewAppDomain", AppDomain.CurrentDomain.Evidence, adSetup, permissions);//, sns);//, sn4, sn, sn2, sn3); try { String asmName = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().FullName; String typeName = typeof(ConsoleApp.ScriptRunner).FullName; //Throws exception here ScriptRunner scriptRunner = domain.CreateInstanceAndUnwrap(asmName, typeName) as ScriptRunner; } catch (SecurityException se) { System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine(se.Message); } catch (Exception ex) { System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine(ex.Message); } } } public class ScriptRunner : MarshalByRefObject { public ScriptRunner() { //A breakpoint placed here is never reached. • Convert PDF to Image Batch

  • Printing an array in a method, from a different class?

    - by O.Lodhi
    Hello All, I'm a fairly inexperienced programmer, and i'm currently working on a Console Application project. It's basically a little 'mathematics game'; the application generates two random numbers, that have either been added, subtracted, multiplied or divided against each other randomly. The answer is shown on screen and the user has to pick from the menu which is the right mathematical operator, once the correct answer is picked the application then displays on screen how long it took for the user in milliseconds to input the correct answer. Now I want to save the times of the players in an array that can be called up later with all the scores. I need to include a method in this programme and I figured a method to save the times into an array would be suitable. I seem to have stumbled across a little problem though. I'm not quite sure what's wrong: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; namespace Mathgame { class Program { } class arrayclass { public static void saveInArray(int duration) { int[] TopTenScores = {000,1000,2000,3000,4000,5000,6000,7000,8000,9000}; if (duration < 1000) { duration = TopTenScores[000]; } else if ((duration >= 1000) && (duration <= 1999)) { duration = TopTenScores[1000]; } else if ((duration >= 2000) && (duration <= 2999)) { duration = TopTenScores[2000]; } else if ((duration >= 3000) && (duration <= 3999)) { duration = TopTenScores[3000]; } else if ((duration >= 4000) && (duration <= 4999)) { duration = TopTenScores[4000]; } else if ((duration >= 5000) && (duration <= 5999)) { duration = TopTenScores[5000]; } else if ((duration >= 6000) && (duration <= 6999)) { duration = TopTenScores[6000]; } else if ((duration >= 7000) && (duration <= 7999)) { duration = TopTenScores[7000]; } else if ((duration >= 8000) && (duration <= 8999)) { duration = TopTenScores[8000]; } else if ((duration >= 9000) && (duration <= 9999)) { duration = TopTenScores[9000]; } Console.WriteLine(TopTenScores); } static void Main(string[] args) { int intInput, num1, num2, incorrect, array1; float answer; string input; System.Random randNum = new System.Random(); Console.WriteLine("Welcome to the Maths game!"); Console.WriteLine("(Apologies for the glitchiness!)"); Console.WriteLine(); Console.WriteLine("Please choose from the following options:"); Console.WriteLine(); retry: Console.WriteLine("1 - Test your Maths against the clock!"); Console.WriteLine("2 - Exit the application."); Console.WriteLine("3 - Top scores"); Console.WriteLine(); input = Console.ReadLine(); intInput = int.Parse(input); if (intInput == 1) { goto start; } else if (intInput == 2) { goto fin; } else if (intInput == 3) { array1 = array1.saveInArray; goto retry; } Now, in the last 'else if' statement in the code, you can see my variable array1 trying to call the method, but no matter what I do I keep getting errors. This is the only error I have at the moment, but I have a feeling soon as I resolve that error, another will come up. For now i'm just determined to get past this error: 'int' does not contain a definition for 'saveInArray' and no extension method 'saveInArray' accepting a first argument of type 'int' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?). Any help would be kindly appreciated, apologies in advanced for my ugly written code! And thank you to any help that I receive! Regards, Omar.

  • What statistics can be maintained for a set of numerical data without iterating?

    - by Dan Tao
    Update Just for future reference, I'm going to list all of the statistics that I'm aware of that can be maintained in a rolling collection, recalculated as an O(1) operation on every addition/removal (this is really how I should've worded the question from the beginning): Obvious Count Sum Mean Max* Min* Median** Less Obvious Variance Standard Deviation Skewness Kurtosis Mode*** Weighted Average Weighted Moving Average**** OK, so to put it more accurately: these are not "all" of the statistics I'm aware of. They're just the ones that I can remember off the top of my head right now. *Can be recalculated in O(1) for additions only, or for additions and removals if the collection is sorted (but in this case, insertion is not O(1)). Removals potentially incur an O(n) recalculation for non-sorted collections. **Recalculated in O(1) for a sorted, indexed collection only. ***Requires a fairly complex data structure to recalculate in O(1). ****This can certainly be achieved in O(1) for additions and removals when the weights are assigned in a linearly descending fashion. In other scenarios, I'm not sure. Original Question Say I maintain a collection of numerical data -- let's say, just a bunch of numbers. For this data, there are loads of calculated values that might be of interest; one example would be the sum. To get the sum of all this data, I could... Option 1: Iterate through the collection, adding all the values: double sum = 0.0; for (int i = 0; i < values.Count; i++) sum += values[i]; Option 2: Maintain the sum, eliminating the need to ever iterate over the collection just to find the sum: void Add(double value) { values.Add(value); sum += value; } void Remove(double value) { values.Remove(value); sum -= value; } EDIT: To put this question in more relatable terms, let's compare the two options above to a (sort of) real-world situation: Suppose I start listing numbers out loud and ask you to keep them in your head. I start by saying, "11, 16, 13, 12." If you've just been remembering the numbers themselves and nothing more, and then I say, "What's the sum?", you'd have to think to yourself, "OK, what's 11 + 16 + 13 + 12?" before responding, "52." If, on the other hand, you had been keeping track of the sum yourself while I was listing the numbers (i.e., when I said, "11" you thought "11", when I said "16", you thought, "27," and so on), you could answer "52" right away. Then if I say, "OK, now forget the number 16," if you've been keeping track of the sum inside your head you can simply take 16 away from 52 and know that the new sum is 36, rather than taking 16 off the list and them summing up 11 + 13 + 12. So my question is, what other calculations, other than the obvious ones like sum and average, are like this? SECOND EDIT: As an arbitrary example of a statistic that (I'm almost certain) does require iteration -- and therefore cannot be maintained as simply as a sum or average -- consider if I asked you, "how many numbers in this collection are divisible by the min?" Let's say the numbers are 5, 15, 19, 20, 21, 25, and 30. The min of this set is 5, which divides into 5, 15, 20, 25, and 30 (but not 19 or 21), so the answer is 5. Now if I remove 5 from the collection and ask the same question, the answer is now 2, since only 15 and 30 are divisible by the new min of 15; but, as far as I can tell, you cannot know this without going through the collection again. So I think this gets to the heart of my question: if we can divide kinds of statistics into these categories, those that are maintainable (my own term, maybe there's a more official one somewhere) versus those that require iteration to compute any time a collection is changed, what are all the maintainable ones? What I am asking about is not strictly the same as an online algorithm (though I sincerely thank those of you who introduced me to that concept). An online algorithm can begin its work without having even seen all of the input data; the maintainable statistics I am seeking will certainly have seen all the data, they just don't need to reiterate through it over and over again whenever it changes.

  • AIR:- Desktop Application related to Window Component (Need some work around)

    - by Mahesh Parate
    Create custom component which contains Combobox and Datagrid. Application conations two button 1) Same Window and 2) New Window. (Label of two button) When you click on “Same Window” button your custom component should get added dynamically in your application. And when you click on “New Window” button your custom component should get open in different window (it should get shifted from application and should appear in Window component). Issue faced:- Clicking on Combobox, list is not getting open as change event doesn’t get fired in Native Window as it looses reference from main application. Issue with DataGrid in Native window (AIR). • DataGridEvent.COLUMN_STRETCH event get affected if try to open datagrid in Native Window. • DataGridEvent get fired but takes long time or even stuck while column stretch Note: Application is an Desktop Application. Only one instance is created in Application for your custom component to preserve current state on your custom component it can be Style, data, or other subcomponent state of your custom component (as above mentioned 2 component are just sample). • Why does calling IEnumerable<string>.Count() create an additional assembly dependency ?

    - by Gishu
    Assume this chain of dll references Tests.dll >> Automation.dll >> White.Core.dll with the following line of code in Tests.dll, where everything builds result.MissingPaths Now when I change this to result.MissingPaths.Count() I get the following build error for Tests.dll "White.UIItem is not defined in an assembly that is not referenced. You must add a reference to White.Core.dll." And I don't want to do that because it breaks my layering. Here is the type definition for result, which is in Automation.dll public class HasResult { public HasResult(IEnumerable<string> missingPaths ) { MissingPaths = missingPaths; } public IEnumerable<string> MissingPaths { get; set; } public bool AllExist { get { return !MissingPaths.Any(); } } } Down the call chain the input param to this ctor is created via (The TreeNode class is in White.Core.dll) assetPaths.Where(assetPath => !FindTreeNodeUsingCache(treeHandle, assetPath)); Why does this dependency leak when calling Count() on IEnumerable ? I then suspected that lazy evaluation was causing this (for some reason) - so I slotted in an ToArray() in the above line but didn't work. Update 2011 01 07: Curiouser and Curiouser! it won't build until I add a White.Core reference. So I add a reference and build it (in order to find the elusive dependency source). Open it up in Reflector and the only references listed are Automation, mscorlib, System.core and NUnit. So the compiler threw away the White reference as it was not needed. ILDASM also confirms that there is no White AssemblyRef entry. Any ideas on how to get to the bottom of this thing (primarily for 'now I wanna know why' reasons)? What are the chances that this is an VS2010/MSBuild bug? Update 2011 01 07 #2 As per Shimmy's suggestion, tried calling the method explcitly as an extension method Enumerable.Count(result.MissingPaths) and it stops cribbing (not sure why). However I moved some code around after that and now I'm getting the same issue at a different location using IEnumerable - this time reading and filtering lines out of a file on disk (totally unrelated to White). Seems like it's a 'symptom-fix'. var lines = File.ReadLines(aFilePath).ToArray(); once again, if I remove the ToArray() it compiles again - it seems that any method that causes the enumerable to be evaluated (ToArray, Count, ToList, etc.) causes this. Let me try and get a working tiny-app to demo this issue... Update 2011 01 07 #3 Phew! More information.. It turns out the problem is just in one source file - this file is LINQ-phobic. Any call to an Enumerable extension method has to be explicitly called out. The refactorings that I did caused a new method to be moved into this source file, which had some LINQ :) Still no clue as to why this class dislikes LINQ. using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.IO; using System.Linq; using G.S.OurAutomation.Constants; using G.S.OurAutomation.Framework; using NUnit.Framework; namespace G.S.AcceptanceTests { public abstract class ConfigureThingBase : OurTestFixture { .... private static IEnumerable<string> GetExpectedThingsFor(string param) { // even this won't compile - although it compiles fine in an adjoining source file in the same assembly //IEnumerable<string> s = new string[0]; //Console.WriteLine(s.Count()); // this is the line that is now causing a build failure // var expectedInfo = File.ReadLines(someCsvFilePath)) // .Where(line => !line.StartsWith("REM", StringComparison.InvariantCultureIgnoreCase)) // .Select(line => line.Replace("%PLACEHOLDER%", param)) // .ToArray(); // Unrolling the LINQ above removes the build error var expectedInfo = Enumerable.ToArray( Enumerable.Select( Enumerable.Where( File.ReadLines(someCsvFilePath)), line => !line.StartsWith("REM", StringComparison.InvariantCultureIgnoreCase)), line => line.Replace("%PLACEHOLDER%", param)));

  • Hibernate error: cannot resolve table

    - by Roman
    I'm trying to make work the example from hibernate reference. I've got simple table Pupil with id, name and age fields. I've created correct (as I think) java-class for it according to all java-beans rules. I've created configuration file - hibernate.cfg.xml, just like in the example from reference. I've created hibernate mapping for one class Pupil, and here is the error occured. <hibernate-mapping> <class name="Pupil" table="pupils"> ... </class> </hibernate-mapping> table="pupils" is red in my IDE and I see message "cannot resolve table pupils". I've also founded very strange note in reference which says that most users fail with the same problem trying to run the example. Ah.. I'm very angry with this example.. IMHO if authors know that there is such problem they should add some information about it. But, how should I fix it? I don't want to deal with Ant here and with other instruments used in example. I'm using MySql 5.0, but I think it doesn't matter. • Web Part to Update a List Data in SharePoint

    - by DanSogaard
    I'm trying to write a web part that access lists and add items in a specific list. The user modifies the web part and type in List Name, the web part has 3 TextBoxs and a Button. The user should enter data and press the save button, that should update the list and add these data in a new record. I'm using the following code to build my web part, but the save button doesn't update the list. I don't know what's wrong it just reload the page and add nothing. Edit: BTW the list am trying to update has three columns, First Name, Last Name, and Email, respectively. using System; using System.Web; using System.Web.UI.WebControls; using System.Web.UI.WebControls.WebParts; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Text; using Microsoft.SharePoint; using Microsoft.SharePoint.Utilities; using Microsoft.SharePoint.WebControls; using Microsoft.SharePoint.WebPartPages; using Microsoft.SharePoint.Security; namespace TimeSheetEntry { public class TimesheetEntry : System.Web.UI.WebControls.WebParts.WebPart { public TimesheetEntry() { } protected TextBox txtFirstName; protected TextBox txtLastName; protected TextBox txtEmail; protected Button btnSave; protected string listName = string.Empty; [WebBrowsable(true), WebDisplayName("List Name"), WebDescription("Enter List Name"), Personalizable(PersonalizationScope.User)] public string LN { get { return this.listName; } set { this.listName = value; } } protected override void CreateChildControls() { //initialize textboxes txtFirstName = new TextBox(); txtLastName = new TextBox(); txtEmail = new TextBox(); //initialize button btnSave = new Button(); btnSave.Text = "Save"; btnSave.Click += new EventHandler(btnSave_Click); } protected override void Render(System.Web.UI.HtmlTextWriter writer) { writer.Write("<table width=100%>"); writer.Write("<tr>"); writer.Write("<td colspan=2>"); writer.Write("</td>"); writer.Write("</tr>"); writer.Write("<tr>"); writer.Write("<td>First:<span class=’ms-formvalidation’>*</span></td>"); writer.Write("<td>"); txtFirstName.RenderControl(writer); writer.Write("</td>"); writer.Write("</tr>"); writer.Write("<tr>"); writer.Write("<td>Last Name:<span class=’ms-formvalidation’>*</span></td>"); writer.Write("<td>"); txtLastName.RenderControl(writer); writer.Write("</td>"); writer.Write("</tr>"); writer.Write("<tr>"); writer.Write("<td>Email:<span class=’ms-formvalidation’>*</span></td>"); writer.Write("<td>"); txtEmail.RenderControl(writer); writer.Write("</td>"); writer.Write("</tr>"); writer.Write("<tr>"); writer.Write("<td>"); writer.Write("</td>"); writer.Write("<td>"); btnSave.RenderControl(writer); writer.Write("</td>"); writer.Write("</tr>"); writer.Write("</table>"); } public void btnSave_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { SPWeb web = SPContext.Current.Web; SPList timesheetList = web.Lists[this.listName]; SPListItem newTimesheetEntry = timesheetList.Items.Add(); newTimesheetEntry["First Name"] = txtFirstName.Text; newTimesheetEntry["Last Name"] = txtLastName.Text; newTimesheetEntry["Email"] = txtEmail.Text; newTimesheetEntry.Update(); timesheetList.Update(); } } }

  • Performance of delegate and method group

    - by BlueFox
    Hi I was investigating the performance hit of creating Cachedependency objects, so I wrote a very simple test program as follows: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Diagnostics; using System.Web.Caching; namespace Test { internal class Program { private static readonly string[] keys = new[] {"Abc"}; private static readonly int MaxIteration = 10000000; private static void Main(string[] args) { Debug.Print("first set"); test7(); test6(); test5(); test4(); test3(); test2(); Debug.Print("second set"); test2(); test3(); test4(); test5(); test6(); test7(); } private static void test2() { DateTime start = DateTime.Now; var list = new List<CacheDependency>(); for (int i = 0; i < MaxIteration; i++) { list.Add(new CacheDependency(null, keys)); } Debug.Print("test2 Time: " + (DateTime.Now - start)); } private static void test3() { DateTime start = DateTime.Now; var list = new List<Func<CacheDependency>>(); for (int i = 0; i < MaxIteration; i++) { list.Add(() => new CacheDependency(null, keys)); } Debug.Print("test3 Time: " + (DateTime.Now - start)); } private static void test4() { var p = new Program(); DateTime start = DateTime.Now; var list = new List<Func<CacheDependency>>(); for (int i = 0; i < MaxIteration; i++) { list.Add(p.GetDep); } Debug.Print("test4 Time: " + (DateTime.Now - start)); } private static void test5() { var p = new Program(); DateTime start = DateTime.Now; var list = new List<Func<CacheDependency>>(); for (int i = 0; i < MaxIteration; i++) { list.Add(() => { return p.GetDep(); }); } Debug.Print("test5 Time: " + (DateTime.Now - start)); } private static void test6() { DateTime start = DateTime.Now; var list = new List<Func<CacheDependency>>(); for (int i = 0; i < MaxIteration; i++) { list.Add(GetDepSatic); } Debug.Print("test6 Time: " + (DateTime.Now - start)); } private static void test7() { DateTime start = DateTime.Now; var list = new List<Func<CacheDependency>>(); for (int i = 0; i < MaxIteration; i++) { list.Add(() => { return GetDepSatic(); }); } Debug.Print("test7 Time: " + (DateTime.Now - start)); } private CacheDependency GetDep() { return new CacheDependency(null, keys); } private static CacheDependency GetDepSatic() { return new CacheDependency(null, keys); } } } But I can't understand why these result looks like this: first set test7 Time: 00:00:00.4840277 test6 Time: 00:00:02.2041261 test5 Time: 00:00:00.1910109 test4 Time: 00:00:03.1401796 test3 Time: 00:00:00.1820105 test2 Time: 00:00:08.5394884 second set test2 Time: 00:00:07.7324423 test3 Time: 00:00:00.1830105 test4 Time: 00:00:02.3561347 test5 Time: 00:00:00.1750100 test6 Time: 00:00:03.2941884 test7 Time: 00:00:00.1850106 In particular: 1. Why is test4 and test6 much slower than their delegate version? I also noticed that Resharper specifically has a comment on the delegate version suggesting change test5 and test7 to "Covert to method group". Which is the same as test4 and test6 but they're actually slower? 2. I don't seem a consistent performance difference when calling test4 and test6, shouldn't static calls to be always faster?

  • Why is insertion into my tree faster on sorted input than random input?

    - by Juliet
    Now I've always heard binary search trees are faster to build from randomly selected data than ordered data, simply because ordered data requires explicit rebalancing to keep the tree height at a minimum. Recently I implemented an immutable treap, a special kind of binary search tree which uses randomization to keep itself relatively balanced. In contrast to what I expected, I found I can consistently build a treap about 2x faster and generally better balanced from ordered data than unordered data -- and I have no idea why. Here's my treap implementation: http://pastebin.com/VAfSJRwZ And here's a test program: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Diagnostics; namespace ConsoleApplication1 { class Program { static Random rnd = new Random(); const int ITERATION_COUNT = 20; static void Main(string[] args) { List<double> rndTimes = new List<double>(); List<double> orderedTimes = new List<double>(); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(50, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(100, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(200, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(400, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(800, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(1000, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(2000, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(4000, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(8000, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(16000, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(32000, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(64000, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(128000, RandomInsert)); string rndTimesAsString = string.Join("\n", rndTimes.Select(x => x.ToString()).ToArray()); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(50, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(100, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(200, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(400, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(800, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(1000, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(2000, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(4000, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(8000, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(16000, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(32000, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(64000, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(128000, OrderedInsert)); string orderedTimesAsString = string.Join("\n", orderedTimes.Select(x => x.ToString()).ToArray()); Console.WriteLine("Done"); } static double TimeIt(int insertCount, Action<int> f) { Console.WriteLine("TimeIt({0}, {1})", insertCount, f.Method.Name); List<double> times = new List<double>(); for (int i = 0; i < ITERATION_COUNT; i++) { Stopwatch sw = Stopwatch.StartNew(); f(insertCount); sw.Stop(); times.Add(sw.Elapsed.TotalMilliseconds); } return times.Average(); } static void RandomInsert(int insertCount) { Treap<double> tree = new Treap<double>((x, y) => x.CompareTo(y)); for (int i = 0; i < insertCount; i++) { tree = tree.Insert(rnd.NextDouble()); } } static void OrderedInsert(int insertCount) { Treap<double> tree = new Treap<double>((x, y) => x.CompareTo(y)); for(int i = 0; i < insertCount; i++) { tree = tree.Insert(i + rnd.NextDouble()); } } } } And here's a chart comparing random and ordered insertion times in milliseconds: Insertions Random Ordered RandomTime / OrderedTime 50 1.031665 0.261585 3.94 100 0.544345 1.377155 0.4 200 1.268320 0.734570 1.73 400 2.765555 1.639150 1.69 800 6.089700 3.558350 1.71 1000 7.855150 4.704190 1.67 2000 17.852000 12.554065 1.42 4000 40.157340 22.474445 1.79 8000 88.375430 48.364265 1.83 16000 197.524000 109.082200 1.81 32000 459.277050 238.154405 1.93 64000 1055.508875 512.020310 2.06 128000 2481.694230 1107.980425 2.24 I don't see anything in the code which makes ordered input asymptotically faster than unordered input, so I'm at a loss to explain the difference. Why is it so much faster to build a treap from ordered input than random input?

  • deadlock when using WCF Duplex Polling with Silverlight

    - by Kobi Hari
    Hi all. I have followed Tomek Janczuk's demonstration on silverlight tv to create a chat program that uses WCF Duplex Polling web service. The client subscribes to the server, and then the server initiates notifications to all connected clients to publish events. The Idea is simple, on the client, there is a button that allows the client to connect. A text box where the client can write a message and publish it, and a bigger text box that presents all the notifications received from the server. I connected 3 clients (in different browsers - IE, Firefox and Chrome) and it all works nicely. They send messages and receive them smoothly. The problem starts when I close one of the browsers. As soon as one client is out, the other clients get stuck. They stop getting notifications. I am guessing that the loop in the server that goes through all the clients and sends them the notifications is stuck on the client that is now missing. I tried catching the exception and removing it from the clients list (see code) but it still does not help. any ideas? The server code is as follows: using System; using System.Linq; using System.Runtime.Serialization; using System.ServiceModel; using System.ServiceModel.Activation; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Runtime.Remoting.Channels; namespace ChatDemo.Web { [ServiceContract] public interface IChatNotification { // this will be used as a callback method, therefore it must be one way [OperationContract(IsOneWay=true)] void Notify(string message); [OperationContract(IsOneWay = true)] void Subscribed(); } // define this as a callback contract - to allow push [ServiceContract(Namespace="", CallbackContract=typeof(IChatNotification))] [AspNetCompatibilityRequirements(RequirementsMode = AspNetCompatibilityRequirementsMode.Allowed)] [ServiceBehavior(InstanceContextMode=InstanceContextMode.Single)] public class ChatService { SynchronizedCollection<IChatNotification> clients = new SynchronizedCollection<IChatNotification>(); [OperationContract(IsOneWay=true)] public void Subscribe() { IChatNotification cli = OperationContext.Current.GetCallbackChannel<IChatNotification>(); this.clients.Add(cli); // inform the client it is now subscribed cli.Subscribed(); Publish("New Client Connected: " + cli.GetHashCode()); } [OperationContract(IsOneWay = true)] public void Publish(string message) { SynchronizedCollection<IChatNotification> toRemove = new SynchronizedCollection<IChatNotification>(); foreach (IChatNotification channel in this.clients) { try { channel.Notify(message); } catch { toRemove.Add(channel); } } // now remove all the dead channels foreach (IChatNotification chnl in toRemove) { this.clients.Remove(chnl); } } } } The client code is as follows: void client_NotifyReceived(object sender, ChatServiceProxy.NotifyReceivedEventArgs e) { this.Messages.Text += string.Format("{0}\n\n", e.Error != null ? e.Error.ToString() : e.message); } private void MyMessage_KeyDown(object sender, KeyEventArgs e) { if (e.Key == Key.Enter) { this.client.PublishAsync(this.MyMessage.Text); this.MyMessage.Text = ""; } } private void Button_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { this.client = new ChatServiceProxy.ChatServiceClient(new PollingDuplexHttpBinding { DuplexMode = PollingDuplexMode.MultipleMessagesPerPoll }, new EndpointAddress("../ChatService.svc")); // listen for server events this.client.NotifyReceived += new EventHandler<ChatServiceProxy.NotifyReceivedEventArgs>(client_NotifyReceived); this.client.SubscribedReceived += new EventHandler<System.ComponentModel.AsyncCompletedEventArgs>(client_SubscribedReceived); // subscribe for the server events this.client.SubscribeAsync(); } void client_SubscribedReceived(object sender, System.ComponentModel.AsyncCompletedEventArgs e) { try { Messages.Text += "Connected!\n\n"; gsConnect.Color = Colors.Green; } catch { Messages.Text += "Failed to Connect!\n\n"; } } And the web config is as follows: <system.serviceModel> <extensions> <bindingExtensions> <add name="pollingDuplex" type="System.ServiceModel.Configuration.PollingDuplexHttpBindingCollectionElement, System.ServiceModel.PollingDuplex, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35"/> </bindingExtensions> </extensions> <behaviors> <serviceBehaviors> <behavior name=""> <serviceMetadata httpGetEnabled="true"/> <serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="false"/> </behavior> </serviceBehaviors> </behaviors> <bindings> <pollingDuplex> <binding name="myPollingDuplex" duplexMode="MultipleMessagesPerPoll"/> </pollingDuplex> </bindings> <serviceHostingEnvironment aspNetCompatibilityEnabled="true" multipleSiteBindingsEnabled="true"/> <services> <service name="ChatDemo.Web.ChatService"> <endpoint address="" binding="pollingDuplex" bindingConfiguration="myPollingDuplex" contract="ChatDemo.Web.ChatService"/> <endpoint address="mex" binding="mexHttpBinding" contract="IMetadataExchange"/> </service> </services> </system.serviceModel>

  • Why is .NET faster than C++ in this case?

    - by acidzombie24
    -edit- I LOVE SLaks comment. "The amount of misinformation in these answers is staggering." :D Calm down guys. Pretty much all of you were wrong. I DID make optimizations. It turns out whatever optimizations I made wasn't good enough. I ran the code in GCC using gettimeofday (I'll paste code below) and used g++ -O2 file.cpp and got slightly faster results then C#. Maybe MS didn't create the optimizations needed in this specific case but after downloading and installing mingw I was tested and found the speed to be near identical. Justicle Seems to be right. I could have sworn I use clock on my PC and used that to count and found it was slower but problem solved. C++ speed isn't almost twice as slower in the MS compiler. When my friend informed me of this I couldn't believe it. So I took his code and put some timers onto it. Instead of Boo I used C#. I constantly got faster results in C#. Why? The .NET version was nearly half the time no matter what number I used. C++ version: #include <iostream> #include <stdio.h> #include <intrin.h> #include <windows.h> using namespace std; int fib(int n) { if (n < 2) return n; return fib(n - 1) + fib(n - 2); } int main() { __int64 time = 0xFFFFFFFF; while (1) { int n; //cin >> n; n = 41; if (n < 0) break; __int64 start = __rdtsc(); int res = fib(n); __int64 end = __rdtsc(); cout << res << endl; cout << (float)(end-start)/1000000<<endl; break; } return 0; } C# version: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Runtime.InteropServices; using System.ComponentModel; using System.Threading; using System.IO; using System.Diagnostics; namespace fibCSTest { class Program { static int fib(int n) { if (n < 2)return n; return fib(n - 1) + fib(n - 2); } static void Main(string[] args) { //var sw = new Stopwatch(); //var timer = new PAB.HiPerfTimer(); var timer = new Stopwatch(); while (true) { int n; //cin >> n; n = 41; if (n < 0) break; timer.Start(); int res = fib(n); timer.Stop(); Console.WriteLine(res); Console.WriteLine(timer.ElapsedMilliseconds); break; } } } } GCC version: #include <iostream> #include <stdio.h> #include <sys/time.h> using namespace std; int fib(int n) { if (n < 2) return n; return fib(n - 1) + fib(n - 2); } int main() { timeval start, end; while (1) { int n; //cin >> n; n = 41; if (n < 0) break; gettimeofday(&start, 0); int res = fib(n); gettimeofday(&end, 0); int sec = end.tv_sec - start.tv_sec; int usec = end.tv_usec - start.tv_usec; cout << res << endl; cout << sec << " " << usec <<endl; break; } return 0; }
