  I have a linux box running Debian server with minimal number of packages (so no GUI for network management). The box has two ethernet cards, one of which (eth0) is connected to a Mac OSX computer using a cross-cable. I can bring up eth0 and assign a static ip (10.10.11.16) to it. This way I can ssh to the box through the cross-cable. This is what I run on Linux box: ifconfig eth0 10.10.11.16 netmask 255.255.255.0 up I also installed/started a file server (AFS) on Debian. So far, the file server can only be accessed through eth1 which is exposed to my home LAN and www. My goal is to set up the file server so that it's only visible through eth0. Is this possible? and if yes, how can I do it?

• Finding the file that is on a bad block on a HFS+ volume (debugfs for HFS+)

  I have a drive in our iMac that has bad blocks, as booting from an Ubuntu 11.10 live CD and using ddrescue -f /dev/sda /dev/null finds them. I'd like to get the drive to remap them by writing to the blocks, say using hdparm --write-sector, but I don't want to do this without knowing what's in those blocks and finding the file that owns them, so I can restore the file from another source. I found fileXray but don't feel like spending $79 to map a block to a file and hfsdebug has been taken offline. Are there suggestions on a tool or technique to use? I looked at all the Ubuntu HFS+ packages to see if they could provide this info but nothing jumped out at me. BTW, I used Disk Utility to erase the empty space, but it didn't get any of the bad blocks to be remapped, according to smartctl -A.

• Method for launching audio player on Android from web page for streaming media

  To link to SHOUTcast/HTTP internet radio streams, traditionally you would link to a playlist file, such as an M3U or PLS. From there, the browser would launch the audio player registered to handle the playlist. This works great on any PC, Palm, Blackberry, and iPhone. This method does not work in Android without installing extra software. Sure, Just Playlists or StreamFurious can handle it just fine, but I am assuming there has to be a way to invoke the audio or video player commonly installed by default on Android installations. By default, no audio player is capable of handling M3U or PLS. The player seems to open it, but says "Unsupported Media Type". To make this more annoying, the browser is capable of streaming MP3 audio over HTTP, simply by opening a link to an MP3 file. I have tried simply linking directly to the MP3 stream hosted by SHOUTcast, which should end up in the same result, but SHOUTcast detects "Mozilla" in the user-agent string, and instead of sending the stream, it sends the information page for the station. How should I link to a SHOUTcast stream on Android, from a normal mobile site, without using extra applications?

• Extending C drive not possible

  This is my computer partition list. You can see my C drive is running very low on disk space. I wanted to extend my disk space, so I used mmc Disk managment to shrink a volume, but I can't extend it to the C drive because the extended volume in dropdown list of C is not clickable. I've tried many packages, but none were able to do it. My C drive is simple, basic, NTFS, healthy (boot, crash dump, primary partition). The MMC Windows: What should I do?

• What configuration management solutions exist in a non-networked environment?

  My servers exist in an environment without outside network connectivity (this is a requirement), so when I deploy updates all packages, binaries, config files, etc. must be included on the delivered media. And of course I want some sort of configuration management so I can tell what has and hasn't been installed. So I was wondering if people had experience with chef, puppet, or another configuration management type tool for dealing with this type of environment. Worst case I deploy my updates as an RPM. EDIT: My setup has both Linux servers and Windows servers.

• chmod -R 777 /. - RHEL 5.5

  A shell script testing went bad and it issued chmod -R 777 /. to the system, instead of chmod -R 777 ./ and as expected it wiped the critical meta data. We have turned off the system and it will not function properly the next time it is turned on. I am told that rpm --setperms -a rpm --setugids -a should atleast fix the permission of the packages maintained by rpm. Is it worth doing? And is there any script available which will copy the permission from an identical system? To atleast get the box working. The Box is running RHEL5.5 Thanks!

• Search /usr/local/texlive directory with Spotlight

  Having TeXLive installed on my Mac, I frequently need to consult documentation for some of the packages. It seems silly to Google this when I have the PDFs all on my HDD in /usr/local/texlive/2011/texmf-dist/doc , so I want to be able to use Spotlight to search for them. However, I can't get Spotlight to cooperate. I tried mdimport /usr/local/texlive/2011/texmf-dist/doc which then does some work, but afterwards doesn't display any results in Spotlight. I've also added the folder in Alfred's search scope to no avail. Any ideas?

• use yum behind a proxy on CentOS 5.6

  I have a CentOS VM running in Virtualbox on a Windows 7 host (all 64-bit). I have configured the proxy in the System menu and have added the proxy=http://my.proxy.com:12345 line to my /etc/yum.conf file. I am able to connect to the internet from a browser, and I can update packages form the update manager and install them from the package manager. However, I cannot use yum for anything. When I attempt to use yum (install, update, upgrade, or anything else), It attempts to connect to the mirrors, does nothing, then after a minute or so, quits. Does anyone know how to configure yum to work behind a proxy?

  I've written a web application for which the user interface is in Dutch. I use the system's date and time routines to format date strings in the application. However, the date strings that the system formats are in English but I want them in Dutch, so I need to set the system's locale. How do I do that on Debian? I tried setting LC_ALL=nl_NL but it doesn't seem to have any effect: $ date Sat Aug 15 14:31:31 UTC 2009 $ LC_ALL=nl_NL date Sat Aug 15 14:31:36 UTC 2009 I remember that setting LC_ALL on my Ubuntu desktop system works fine. Do I need to install extra packages to make this work, or am I doing it entirely wrong?

• Power cut during Ubuntu upgrade to 10.04 - boots to command line, apt-get and dpkg do not work.

  I was upgrading Ubuntu to 10.04, when a tripswitch tripped, cutting power to the computer. When it was restarted, it booted into a command line prompt. Google tells me to try: sudo dpkg --configure -a This gets me a lot of output that ends with a list of packages. I can't tell you what the output is, as piping the output to more/less does not work (still just all scrolls by and moves to next prompt), and redirecting it to a file just results in an empty file. Google also suggested: sudo apt-get install -f This also didn't work. Is a fresh install the only solution at this point?

  Hi, Apologies if the question appears ambiguous, I have little experience in this area and was after some informed opinions. I am deploying a test scenario of a server/client network and need to make some choices for Server. The client will be a Windows system as it meets the requirements for the client, the server choice has more room for selection. From my experience with Linux in general and the appealing nature of open source for low cost, security etc and the availability and performance of database and web server programs I have been considering CentOS as a server choice. I have the ability to make most of the choices of what software / server packages I wish to install. This includes Active Directory (something I have no experience with). How well does this operate with Windows clients? Am I being too selective and creating unnecessary complication by setting out not to use a Windows Server OS?

  Hello, I have a root-server (i7/24GB/1TB) running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS as my OS. After some security audits (OpenVAS, Retina etc) I see that Ubuntu isn't the most secure system for a semi-corporate environment. Its updated from many sources, ofc from the Ubuntu security repo too. But nevertheless I could exploit my OpenSSL install with an exploit from August/September. There are some critical updates needed which Ubuntu does not provide. I was using Debian and Ubuntu for almost 5 years but now I doubt. What distro is secure and up to date from your point of view? How can I make the server more secure? Outsourcing of every software-module to a VM? I am not new to server-hardening, my packages are up to date I read Ubuntu Security Notices and I have no unneeded services installed on my server.   This is the opposite of this question. Basically I've been using Ubuntu for a while but decided to give KDE a shot so I went through the process of getting the latest KDE installed. I'm very impressed with KDE and the Kwin window manager seems like a better WM than Compiz which is what I was using for Gnome (sure that's an oppinion). This was an Ubuntu Jaunty install. So how do I go about removing the Gnome desktop? Is there an automated way similar to what my previous question covered? UPDATE: Should there be any packages I should NOT remove in the process?

  I have a OpenBSD server acting as a router/firewall with yhr packet filter ruleset shown below, a linux server, and a linux client. When transferring files (using netcat) by TCP, the limits are applied (for example the 100mbit limit in the example), though when transferring data by UDP, the limits aren't applied; the file always takes the same amount of time no matter the queue bandwidth limit I set (I can even turn off the queues completely, and will still get the same result). Why aren't the queuing rules applied to UDP packages?   Is there a way that I can use my Linux ext4 file system, as such and then use it on some other computer. I have a dual-boot of Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 and my partition table looks like this: My question might not be clear, so explaining it with an example. Can I copy my Linux partition on a flash drive and then use it on a different PC, with or without any need to install Ubuntu on new PC, by simply booting from the copied ext4 partition. This way, I can easily port my Ubuntu packages and other applications, settings etc. from one PC to other. If it's a very stupid question, please don't mind.
