  • Logging Remote Desktop to Servers via Logon Script or GPO or What?

    The objective here is to start a simple .NET application I've written which captures some environment variables (time, username, computername, etc) upon login. This .NET application subscribes to the Windows "User logout" event. Upon launch, the application captures the above variables, and creates a record in my database, upon logout (which I'm capturing) I update another field in the same record, with the logout time. The above is working exactly as I would like, when I launch the binary, it makes its initial log entry, then waits for the logout event and updates the same record. Restrictions, the .NET binary should be able to live on a share point (\server\share\myapp\v1) so I can update the application to (\server\share\myapp\v2) and simply update the GPO/Logon script. My initial thought was to use the \domaincontroller\sysvol\ directory to store the binary and then update all user accounts to include a call to my application. Can you see any flaws in this approach? My question is this: First, is there anything wrong with my idea above? Second, if so, what is the best way (through group policy or otherwise) to ensure this application launches whenever a session is started on a server?

  • How to host my own cloud so that videos are viewable via desktop web browser?

    I want to host my own cloud storage solution, something like Dropbox but entirely dependent on my own central machine. This way things are more secure if setup correctly, and there are artificial storage limitations or pay-walls. Some thing similar to ownCloud: http://owncloud.org/ There is one important feature I want to have: the ability the stream movies in a web browser from my personal cloud to anywhere in the world. In the past I tried this with a NAS, and I mapped XBMC to the NAS via SFTP, and certain media types could stream in this manner. I've also used things like PLEX. In this case, I am looking for a single solution for personal cloud storage and movie streaming from that cloud into a web browser. Does anyone know if this can be accomplished? Thanks for the suggestions!

  • Any reasonable UPS for a Desktop PC, just to shut it down?

    While I do have a surge protector to protect against overvoltage (hopefully), I have nothing against undervoltage. When a lightning storm hits, I had the lights flickering at some point. The PC continued to run, but it got me thinking of getting a UPS as a way to a) have a clean 120V/60Hz power source and b) have a way to shut down the PC in case something bad happens. I heard not all UPS' protect against power spikes, so I wonder if someone has a recommendation? It does not need to keep the PC on for a long time if the power goes out, it's good enough if it shuts down the PC after 5 minutes or so. There are 2 PCs connected. One is a Core i7-860 with a Radeon 5870 running Windows 7 Ultimate (so quite power hungry. It uses a 600W PSU but I have no measurements of the actual usage), the other one is a Windoes Home Server, running WHS/Windows Server 2003. Any recommendations in the low-price segment?

    I recently got a wireless PC controller, and now I enjoy games playing from my bed. However, I find it hard to correctly place my laptop so it's comfortable, and it would be great if there was a way to view my screen through my iPad, with minimal lag; so I could simply leave my laptop behind me or on the desk and view the game from the iPad. Is this feasible/realistic? Additional info: Both the iPad and the laptop are on the same WiFi network

  • Transparent, unicode X terminal not tied to a Desktop Environment?

    I've been looking for this for a while now and I just haven't been able to find one. The last few that I used were: aterm - this one was fast and had good transparency support, but it doesn't support Unicode at all as far as I can tell. The dependency graph is also reasonable. gnome-terminal - was good, and had good transparency support plus unicode, but it pulls in about everything in gnome, and I don't use anything else in gnome. It was also somewhat slow (noticable lag in updating at times) and wouldn't use fonts that I wanted. Eterm - same thing as aterm, good dependencies and transparency but no unicode. Does anyone have suggestions, or will I be stuck with gnome-terminal's dependencies and slowness?

    I've looked on the internet regarding port forwarding. I've successfully fowarded port 8069 to my server's ip address. I can access openERP when I'm connected to the network of my office but not when I'm outside my office's network. What am I missing? my computer's ip address starts with 192... Do I have to first up the router's ip address and then my server's ip address to get to my server from the outside? what should I type in my internet browser? I've looked all day yesterday.

  • How can I access my desktop computer from my Android phone?

    Is it possible to access a computer connected to the internet through an Android phone? (the internet goes through the phone by tethering) I want to use ssh to connect to the computer (from a different computer in the same network), but I am not able to access the computer. Is it possible to portforward, use some kind of transparent proxy or to use DMZ? My phone is rooted and I have Cyanogenmod installed and I can use iptables. EDIT: The changed title completely changed the question! My setup is the following: I have an android phone connected to a computer through the usb cable tethering internet from the phone, I wanted to ssh into the computer behind the android phone from another computer in the same network as the android phone. This was not possible, because the android phone creates a separate network for the connected computer, effectively shielding it from any incoming signals. It turned out to be quite simple to fix by just using iptables.

  • pure/const functions in C++

    Hi, I'm thinking of using pure/const functions more heavily in my C++ code. (pure/const attribute in GCC) However, I am curious how strict I should be about it and what could possibly break. The most obvious case are debug outputs (in whatever form, could be on cout, in some file or in some custom debug class). I probably will have a lot of functions, which don't have any side effects despite this sort of debug output. No matter if the debug output is made or not, this will absolutely have no effect on the rest of my application. Or another case I'm thinking of is the use of my own SmartPointer class. In debug mode, my SmartPointer class has some global register where it does some extra checks. If I use such an object in a pure/const function, it does have some slight side effects (in the sense that some memory probably will be different) which should not have any real side effects though (in the sense that the behaviour is in any way different). Similar also for mutexes and other stuff. I can think of many complex cases where it has some side effects (in the sense of that some memory will be different, maybe even some threads are created, some filesystem manipulation is made, etc) but has no computational difference (all those side effects could very well be left out and I would even prefer that). How does it work out in practice? If I mark such functions as pure/const, could it break anything (considering that the code is all correct)?

Both of the buttons have event handlers that invokes a different function. Each function have codes that act like a state, for instance. button1.onclick=function (){ $("div").click( //code effects 2 ) } button2.onclick=function (){ $("div").click( //Code effects 2 ) } I the code works fine on the surface but the 2 state functions overlap. the effects is going to take place for the rest of the way until the next reload of the document. Basically what I want to achieve is that when 1 button is clicked, it will switch "OFF" the state of function invoked by the other button and vice versa. Thus, the effects achieved are unique are not overlapped. Is there anyway to achieve this or could any experts point me to the right direction. Thanks in advance.

    Are you having issues with Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8? Is Internet Explorer 10 application not launching in Metro mode and always launching in Desktop mode? Continue reading the post to understand and fix the problem. When Internet Explorer 10 does not launch in Metro mode? On Windows 8 when Internet Explorer is launched from Start screen it launches in Metro UI mode and when launched from Desktop it launches in traditional desktop UI mode. But when Internet Explorer  is not set as default browser, Windows 8 always launches Internet Explorer in Desktop mode irrespective of whether its launched from Start screen or Desktop. This generally happens when we install the browsers Firefox or Chrome and set them as default browser. How to restore Internet Explorer 10 Metro mode? The problem can be resolved by setting Internet Explorer 10 as the default web browser in Windows 8. But setting default web browser in Windows 8 is a bit tricky as there is no option available Options screen of  of Internet Explorer. To set Internet Explorer 10 as the default web browser follow these steps 1. Go to Start screen of Windows 8 and search for Default Programs app by typing Default using keyboard. 2. Click on the link Set your default programs 3. Choose Internet Explorer on the left section of the screen(pointer 1) and then click on the option Set this program as default available at the bottom right section(pointer 2) 4. That’s it.   • Is it possible to update from Windows 8 Enterprise to version 8.1 without having to reinstall the OS?

    Today we are told that the 8.1 update, (a version which allows you to keep apps, settings, and files), is officially being rolled out worldwide. No longer will you have to do a clean OS install, to go from 8 to 8.1. But I don't see the update inside my (Enterprise's) desktop 'Windows Update' program, and furthermore, Microsoft themselves say: If you’re running [Enterprise], you can't install the free update to Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1 from the Store. However they DO also say: If you installed Windows 8 using an MSDN ISO, you might be able to install Windows 8.1 using a similar ISO from MSDN But it does not specify whether this method allows seamless apps and settings-retaining upgrading or not. Is there a method for doing it (whether official or unofficial - perhaps confirmed via experience of updating with some sort of Enterprise 8.1 ISO), or is an update indeed expected for the Enterprise version via the desktop 'Windows Update' program? A further observation which may help: the page I cite refers to the 'Windows Store', which is the 'Modern UI' app store and NOT the desktop 'Windows Update' program which typically updates desktop Office and desktop Windows alike.

    I have just started Linux. I have a SBC(Atom processor) on which I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 and now I am trying to install Fortran IDE. For which I have learnt that I need to install OpenJDK first, then Eclipse Juno and at last the Phortran plugin for Eclipse. I have no Internet access so I had follow the below steps for manual installation. First download the eclipse tar.gz package (downloaded: eclipse-parallel-juno-linux-gtk.tar). Then right-click the eclipse tar.gz and choose the extract here option to extract the tar.gz package.You can also use the command line to extract the tar.gz package. # tar xzf eclipse-cpp-juno-linux-gtk.tar.gz Move to /opt/ folder. # mv eclipse /opt/ Use sudo if the above command gives permission denied message. # sudo mv eclipse /opt/ Create a desktop file and place it into /usr/share/applications # sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/eclipse.desktop and copy the following to the eclipse.desktop file [Desktop Entry] Name=Eclipse Type=Application Exec=/opt/eclipse/eclipse Terminal=false Icon=/opt/eclipse/icon.xpm Comment=Integrated Development Environment NoDisplay=false Categories=Development;IDE Name[en]=eclipse.desktop Create a symlink in /usr/local/bin using # cd /usr/local/bin # sudo ln -s /opt/eclipse/eclipse Now its the time to launch eclipse. # /opt/eclipse/eclipse -clean & Now at step 5, when I type the command sudo ln -s /opt/eclipse/eclipse , I get an this error message: ln: Failed to create symbolic link './eclipse': File exists. MORE DETAILS: UltraVNC client running on a Windows computer can login and shows the Ubuntu desktop, and controls the Ubuntu mouse to do things, but the VNC client view at the Windows computer does NOT show any changes to the display at the Ubuntu desktop, only the original desktop view at the time of VNC client login. UPDATE I solved it by following the askubuntu post: "VNC session very slow in 12.04 compared to older versions", which said to do this: gsettings set org.gnome.Vino disable-xdamage true ..and it worked. But should I be concerned about the error messages?
