• 3G USB Modem Not Working in 12.04

  When I connect my 3G USB Modem to my laptop with 12.04, nothing shows up in Network-Manager. This modem is working in 11.10 and the modem is shown in Network-Manager but not in 12.04 !! • Super Computer Built from Raspberry Pi Boards and LEGO Bricks

  It was only a matter of time before someone chained together dozens of Raspberry Pi boards into a serviceable super computer; read on to see how a team of Southampton scientists built a 64-core machine using them. From the University of South Hampton press release: Professor Cox comments: “As soon as we were able to source sufficient Raspberry Pi computers we wanted to see if it was possible to link them together into a supercomputer. We installed and built all of the necessary software on the Pi starting from a standard Debian Wheezy system image and we have published a guide so you can build your own supercomputer.” The racking was built using Lego with a design developed by Simon and James, who has also been testing the Raspberry Pi by programming it using free computer programming software Python and Scratch over the summer. The machine, named “Iridis-Pi” after the University’s Iridis supercomputer, runs off a single 13 Amp mains socket and uses MPI (Message Passing Interface) to communicate between nodes using Ethernet. The whole system cost under £2,500 (excluding switches) and has a total of 64 processors and 1Tb of memory (16Gb SD cards for each Raspberry Pi). Professor Cox uses the free plug-in ‘Python Tools for Visual Studio’ to develop code for the Raspberry Pi. • View Weather Underground Forecasts in Google Chrome

  If you like a simple straightforward interface for keeping up with weather forecasts then join us as we look at the Weather Underground extension for Google Chrome. Weather Underground in Action As soon as you click on the “Toolbar Icon” you will need to enter a location. Keep in mind that you will need to enter the “city and country” if using that option. Going with less information will yield an “error”. Note: The extension did not work for some Asian locations during our tests. In honor of the Olympics we chose Vancouver, Canada. You can hover over the “Toolbar Button” to see the current conditions or click to view the current day’s conditions, the current day’s forecast, and the forecast for the following three days. It is a simple straightforward interface. Note: There are no options to worry with. Clicking on the “Detailed Forecast Link” in the drop-down window will take you to the Weather Underground webpage for your location. Clicking on the “Weather Underground Link” in the drop-down window will take you to the Weather Underground U.S. Homepage. Additional Weather Underground Fun Since we were focusing on Weather Underground we have an extra bit of fun for you. If you love being able to view a “large scale” map of your location with current conditions and forecast combined then you might want to have a look at Weather Underground’s “wxmap webpage”. • How to copy lots of files between two computers, without network?

  I want to copy around 50Gb of files from my desktop to my work laptop. For some reason, the laptop won't connect to my home network. I haven't had any luck with a direct ethernet connection either, and I'm not willing to change any of the laptop's network configuration (last time I did that, I couldn't get onto the network at work, making me Not Very Popular). So...what else is there? The obvious route is copying via SD card. My largest card is 8Gb. But I can't find a good workflow. Is there a tool designed for this, where I could just repetitively move the card back and forth, without having to select files? I've tried using teracopy, but you end up missing a few files. I guess I could zip everything up into multi-volume .rars or something...but is there a more elegant way?

• Overriding destination directory from ROBOCOPY Job file?

  I am using Robocopy for backing up my project directories to an external disk, and it works like a charm. Except for one little issue: sometimes, I wish I could override the destination directory which I specify in my Robocopy Job file (myproject.rcj) to send the files somewhere else. So if I have this in my myprojects.rcj: :: Robocopy Job MYPROJECT.RCJ :: Source Directory : /SD:d:\MyProject :: Source Directory. :: Destination Directory : /DD:f:\MyDefaultDestination :: Destination Directory. is there any way I can instruct Robocopy to use a different destination when executing it using a job? So I execute Robocopy like this: robocopy /job:myproject.rcj and I wish I could override the default destination directory by using: robocopy /job:myproject.rcj /DD:X:\OtherDestination but that doesn't seem to work..... ERROR : Invalid Parameter #2 : "/DD:X:\OtherDestination" Any ideas??

• Windows Embedded CE DiskPrep PowerToy

  Kurt Kennett from Microsoft has offered up a handy new tool. This tool is useful for creating a boot disk for x86 Windows CE systems that use the BIOSLoader. This is especially useful for creating disks with formats other than FAT16, which are fairly easy to create. I am letting you know about this new tool, but I have to be honest in telling you that I haven’t used it myself because it is for Windows Vista and Windows 7 – which I don’t have available right now. But you can bet that I will be setting up a virtual machine to give it a try. Here is what Kurt has to say about the tool: Download the DiskPrep Tool  DiskPrep can prepare any hard disk that can be attached to your development PC so that it can boot your X86-based Windows CE OS Design. USB disks (including disk "keys"), Compact Flash Cards, and SD cards all work if your system bios can boot from that type of media. FAT16, FAT32, and exFAT all supported. DOS is not used - the program prepares the bios loader on the disk and only uses that. If you use Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can use VHD files for VirtualPC. • Juju stuck in "pending" state when using LXC

  So I'm trying to get started with Juju, and tried to do this locally using LXC. I followed the instructions here: How do I configure juju for local usage? • 2010 April Fools Joke

  I started at my current job at the end of March last year and there were some pretty funny April fools jokes.  Nothing super crazy, but pretty funny.  One guy came in and there was a tree in his cube.  We (me and the rest of my team) were planning for a couple of weeks on what we could do that would be just awesome.  We had a lot of really good ideas but nothing was spectacular.  Then Steve Andrews had a brilliant idea (yes it's true).  Since we have internal DNS servers we could redirect DNS to our internal servers for a site such as cnn.com.  Then we would lift the code from the site and create our own home page that would contain news about people in the company.  Steve was actually laughing so hard when he thought of the idea that it took him almost 30 minutes to spit it out. I thought, "this is perfect". I had enlisted a couple of people to help come up with the stories and at the same time we were trying to figure out how to get everybody to the site the morning of the 1st.  Then it hit me.  We could have the main article be one of my getting picked up by the FBI on hacking charges.  Then Chris (my boss) could send an email out telling everyone that I would not be there today and direct them to the site.  That would for sure get everyone to go to cnn.com first thing and see our prank.  I begun the process of looking for photos I could crop myself into and found the perfect one.  Then my wife took a good pic with our Canon 40D and I went to work.  The night before I didn't have any other stories due to everyone being really busy at work, but I decided to go ahead with just the FBI bust on it's own.  I got everything working and tested and coordinated with Chris for me to come in late so no one would see me at the office until after everyone had seen the joke. And so the morning of April fools came and I was waiting at home and the email was perfect.  Chris told everyone that I wouldn't be in and that not to answer any questions if you got any calls from anybody.  The Photoshop job I did was not perfect, but good enough and I even wrote an article with it that went into more detail about how I had been classified as a terrorist and all kinds of stuff. People at work started getting the emails and a few people didn't realize it was a joke (as I had hoped), including some from senior management (one person in particular who shall remain nameless in this post).  Emails started flying around about how to contain the situation and how to handle bad PR.  He basically bought it hook, line and sinker and then went in to crisis mode.  It was awesome! He did finally realize it was a joke and I will likely print and frame the email he sent out.  In short, April fools this year was a huge success.

• Choosing a very basic Linux distro with minimal boot time?

  I've had Ubuntu for a year now, like it but it doesn't match my needed configuration for my old laptop. So... I am using Linux mainly for webapps so I don't care much about user interface. What I need is a distro which is small enough to install on a SD memory card (or USB) since I am removing the hard drive, all my data is in the cloud. I also want it to have as short boot time as possible. I tried Puppy Linux and it seems ok but it had preinstalled looots af small apps I don't need, I would really like to have a distro with minimal preinstallations and add them on my own. So what are my choices and why would you recommend these?

  I'm getting this error message in the Action Center on Windows 7, and I can't seem to solve it through Windows or through searches on Google: RICOH R5C592 PCI-CardBus/IEEE-1394/SD Card/Memory Stick Controller is not compatible with this version of Windows. Thanks for any help PS. I wasn't sure if you're allowed to post questions like this, about proprietary software, but I checked the FAQ and it seemed ok. Response: The URL I am told to visit it this but I can't tell which I should choose that I am originally presented with, or what to put in to select, as I am not sure what input it is referring to.

  I just built a new proxy server and compiled the latest versions of squid and dansguardian. We use basic authentication to select what users are allowed outside of our network. It seems squid is working just fine and accepts my username and password and lets me out. But if i connect to dans guardian, it prompts for username and password and then displays a message saying my username is not allowed to access the internet. Its pulling my username for the error message so i know it knows who i am. The part i get confused on is i thought that part was handled all by squid, and squid is working flawlessly. • IDE <-> SATA Adapter Issue - Hard Drive Not recognized

  I was trying to use one of these IDE to SATA adapters (Syba SD-ADA50016 IDE/SATA Converter Bi-directional IDE to SATA) and I connected a working hard drive (Seagate Barracuda 500 GB SATA 3.5 Inch 7200 RPM Version 12 Desktop Internal Hard Drive ST3500418AS). I could get the drive to be recognized by the BIOS, but I couldn't boot a Linux disc or install to the drive. I tried to install pfSense to this drive and the install failed because the setup couldn't recognize the file. Has anyone heard of these adapters giving trouble and/or not working properly? I would like to be able to use this device for newer drives on older boards.

• Chromebook, Crouton & “External Drive” is it possible to rename the folder?

  I have a Chromebook where I installed Crouton. I have plugged an SD Card and Chromebook detects it as "External Drive". In my Ubuntu instance, it's located at /media/removable/External Drive/ but this poses some problems for executing some applications I have installed on that external drive. In order to fix the problem, I need to remove all the spaces in the path, which is located in "External Drive". My question is simple, is it possible to move/rename the mount name "External Drive" to something else and doing it automatically at every mount/boot ? Thank you for your help !

  I am developing an application on a Linux embedded board (runs Debian) e.g. Raspberry Pi, Beagle Board/Bone, or olimex. The boards works on an environment that the electricity is cut unexpectedly (it is far complicated to place PSU, etc.) and it would happen every day couple times. I wonder if the unexpected power cuts would cause crash/problem on the Linux Operation System? If it is something that I should worry, what would you suggest to prevent the damages on OS against the unexpected power cuts? PS. The application needs to writes some data to the storage medium (SD card), I think it would not be suitable to mount it as read-only.

• Program shortcuts disappearing in Windows Mobile 2003, any way to get them back?

  I have a WM2003 device with some programs installed on it and a full backup created and saved to a SD card. If the device runs out of charge for some time (or the battery removed) everything is reseted back to defaults, so the custom programs and configs are gone. When this happens I used to restore the full backup to put everything back to normal again. But I've recently installed TomTom Navigator 7 and for some reason, its shortcut in the "Programs" section is not saved when creating a full backup (with the eBackup app provided) and the installation doesn't create a shortcut in the main screen (as version 6 used to do). Is there any way to make this shortcut persistent? Is there any way to create custom shortcuts in the programs section or in the main screen (preferably)? • MacGyver Moments

  Denny Cherry tagged me to write about my best MacGyver Moment.  Usually I ignore blogosphere fluff and just use this space to write what I think is important.  However, #MVP10 just ended and I have a stronger sense of community.  Besides, where else would I mention my second best Macgyver moment was making a BIOS jumper out of a soda can.  Aluminum is conductive and I didn't have any real jumpers lying around. My best moment is probably my entire home computer network.  Every system but one is hand-built, usually cobbled together out of spare parts and 'adapted' from its original purpose. My Primary Domain Controller is a Dell 2300.   The Service Tag indicates it was shipped to the original owner in 1999.  Box has a PERC/1 RAID controller.  I acquired this from a previous employer for $50.  It runs Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition.  Does DNS, DHCP, and RADIUS services as a bonus.  RADIUS authentication is used for VPN and Wireless access.  It is nice to sign in once and be done with it. The Secondary Domain Controller is an old desktop.  Dual P-III 933 with some extra drives. My VPN box is a P-II 250 with 384MB of RAM and a 21 GB hard drive.  I did a P-to-V to my Hyper-V box a year or so ago and retired the hardware again.  Dynamic DNS lets me connect no matter how often Comcast shuffles my IP. The Hyper-V box is a desktop system with 8GB RAM and an AMD Athlon 5000+ processor.  Cost me less than $500 to put together nearly two years ago.  I reasoned that if Vista and Windows 2008 were the same code then Vista 64-bit certified meant the drivers for Vista would load into Windows 2008.  Turns out I was right. Later I added three 1TB drives but wasn't too happy with how that turned out.  I recovered two of the drives yesterday and am building an iSCSI storage unit. (Much thanks to Starwind.  Great product).  I am using an old AMD 1.1GhZ box with 1.5 GB RAM (cobbled together from three old PCs) as my storave server.  The Hyper-V box is slated for an OS rebuild to 2008 R2 once I get the storage system worked out.  maybe in a week or two. A couple of DLink Gigabit switches ties everything together. Add in the Vonage box, the three PCs, the Wireless-N Access Point, the two notebooks and the XBox and you have gone from MacGyver to darn near Rube Goldberg. The only thing I really spend money on is power supplies and fans.  I buy top-of-the-line for both. I even pull and crimp my own cables. Oh, and if my kids hose up a PC, I have all of their data on a server elsewhere.  Every PC and laptop is pretty much interchangable for email and basic workstation tasks.  That helps a lot too. Of course I will tag SQLVariant.

• Problems switching to QEMU control panel with -nographics

  It seems that the terminal does not recognise CTRL+ALT+2 when typed, so I don't know how to quit the QEMU emulation, or switch to the QEMU control panel. I am running Mac OSX Lion, and I type $ qemu-system-arm -M verdex -pflash flash.img -nographic -sd sdcard.img to start QEMU emulation of an ARM system in the Terminal. I learned from this site that typing CTRL+ALT+2 should work, but the only thing that happens to me, is that a "2" is printed on the command line of the virtual operating system. Any ideas on what could be wrong? Is this a Mac specific issue? (The same problem occurs in both terminal.app and iTerm2)

I renounced and continued normal navigation. I then noticed that everytime I try to access some pages, for instance google.com (but not Google.it) I receive a warning from Chrome that I'm being redirected through piratenpartji.nl Since I found a similar topic here on 'superuser' I tried what was proposed in the solution, namely shutting down adblock and trying again or trying Incognito mode. Nevertheless, no result. I performed a search with both Avira and Spybot SD but except for a couple cookies from other origin nothing came up. What do you suggest I do? • How to configure a MInimal Ubuntu installation?

  I recently re installed Ubuntu using the mini.iso, but much to my dismay the mini.iso is not configured the same way as the Ubuntu desktop ISO some "problems" I'm facing such as: An Installation using the regular Ubuntu CD recognizes my active network connections in Network Manager, Installing with the mini.iso gives me a working connection however no connections are "active" in Network Manager displaying the message "The system network services are not compatible with this version." In a regular Ubuntu install connecting an Android phone to the PC mounts the phone's internal memory and sd card if present, Using the mini.iso the phone is detected as it appears with the command lsusb but it's not mounted and can't be mounted. In the same regards using the phone to tether it's connection to the PC via USB, the phone is connected to my (wifi) IN the regular Ubuntu install the phone is recognized as a networking device and is used as connection usb0, while in the mini.iso nothing happens, and trying to add the connection to /etc/network/interfaces results in the OS crashing. Just to make sure It wasn't a matter of my user not having the correct permissions or a lack of "groups", I've checked with an Ubuntu VM and the groups are the same, the networking files are the same, and the packages (except those of ubuntu-desktop such as Unity, Firefox, LibreOffice, and other non-essential software) are Installed in my PC, so what else is there to look for?. I'm sure I'm missing something, and I'd prefer not to install Ubuntu again, using the regular cd. How can I manage to get the same behaviour/configuration without reinstalling ?

• Ubuntu, No wireless networks found after correctly installed madwifi

  Hi, I just installed madwifi on my MSI laptop with an Atheros AR5001 wifi card & Lucid. As far as I can see and according to System - Administration - Hardware drivers the install was successful and the card + driver is up and running. However, I don't see any wireless network (my windows PC can see about 5 wireless networks). I tried it with the network manager applet as well as with wicd. If I try to connect to "Hidden Wireless Network" via nm-applet, it will start to connect for a while but is unable too (although I supply it with the correct WEP settings & key) So, I'm unable to use my wireless network. What am i doing wrong?
