• Bluetooth not detecting any devices in Windows 7

  My Lenovo ThinkPad E320 Laptop running Windows 7 64bit has recently been refusing to detect any Bluetooth devices. I have tried to connect, using 'Add devices' under 'devices and printers' to two different Bluetooth mice and my HTC Wildfire android (2.2.1) phone and none of them are detected in the 'Add a device' dialog. History - Bluetooth initially seemed OK when I first got this laptop. I was able to connect to and use my android phone as a remote with no issues. I got my first Bluetooth mouse, it paired, but after each restart, or even after sleeping, it would not 're-connect' (even though it was listed under Bluetooth devices and supposedly 'working'), and I would need to remove the device and add it again. A week or two ago it stopped working all together. It is not detected at all. I gave up on the mouse and bought another (Lenovo ThinkPad brand) only to find that it was not detected either. I subsequently tested my Android phone and discovered it would not detect either. One thing of note is under 'Devices and Printers' there is listed a 'HID Keyboard Device' which under properties is listed as a 'Bluetooth HID Device'. This was not previously there before this problem started. Each time I remove it, or uninstall it from Device Manager it will quickly re-install itself, even with all my Bluetooth devices switched off. My (Google and searching this site) research of this issue has not yielded any definitive answers. I have changed the setting under Device Manager - Bluetooth - Properties - Power Management - 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' to off. I have attempted to un-install and re-install the Bluetooth hardware, including the 'remove drivers' option and downloading and running the Lenovo Bluetooth installer package (found @ http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS014997). Bluetooth is turned on. All items under Bluetooth properties (Discovery and Connections) are checked. I have tried changing the batteries. I'm not sure what else I can try, apart from perhaps doing a fresh install of Windows. Any suggestions?

  Hello All, I am using NetBeans IDE 7.0.1 on Windows 7 very first time for my php. Actually in my company there is a local server ( 192.168.1.99) where all projects resides and we access phpmyadmin of that local server, Although I have added my project folders with NetBeans (this was also very hectic) but now I am having problem to connect database of my local server as I can see 192.168.1.99/phpmyadmin through my browser. I have set below value Server Host : localhost, Server port number : 3306, Administrator username : keshav Administrator password : ****** and when i click on connect, a popup error windows appears with below text Unable to connect to the MySQL server: org.netbeans.api.db.explorer.DatabaseException: org.netbeans.api.db.explorer.DatabaseException: java.sql.SQLException: Access denied for user 'keshav'@'localhost' (using password: YES). The server may not be running or your MySQL connection properties may not be set correctly. Do you want to edit your MySQL connection properties? Please help me out. Thanks

• How can I disable logging in Tomcat 7?

  I have a Tomcat 7 server running in a VM that has very little disk space (20G). Over the course of a few days Tomcat will fill the space with logging info (usually about 15G before it runs out). I've tried turning down the log level (from INFO to SEVERE) in the logging.properties file, I've also tried sending the log info to /dev/null. It doesn't seem to work as I still get a full log directory after no time at all. Can I put a file size limit on the log files? Is something overriding the properties I'm setting? Where can I find this information? My Google Fu just returns information about logging from within an application using JULI.

• Preventing ugly hyperlinks in Word-generated PDFs?

  I'm creating a document in Word 2007 on Windows XP, and using the "Save As PDF" add-in. The document contains hyperlinks. When I open that PDF in Preview.app on a Mac (OS X 10.5.8), I see ugly boxes around all the hyperlinks. I've tried editing the PDF in Acrobat Pro 9.2.0 on the Mac, but the boxes don't show up there. If I select a hyperlink anyway with the Link Tool, right-click, and select "Properties..." no properties dialog ever appears. I want the links to be clickable, but I want them to look decent. How can I fix them? I don't have Acrobat for Windows.

• Why do I have two different DNS suffix lists?

  My Windows XP laptop has two different DNS suffix lists. The first is the one I see by selecting the Properties dialog of any of my network connections, selecting Internet Protocol Properties Advanced DNS tab, and looking at the list under the "Append these DNS suffixes (in order)" option. The second list is the one shown under "DNS Suffix Search List" when I run ipconfig /all. As far as I can tell, only the second list ever gets used to resolve unqualified host names. Why are there two different lists? How do I configure the second list? Or how can I make my computer use the first list?

• How does formatting works with a PowerShell function that returns a set of elements?

But even if only 8 columns are shown, there are plenty of other properties (as foo | gm is showing). What is causing this function to show only this 8 properties? I'm actually trying to build a similar function that is returning complex objects from a 3rd party .Net library. The library is flatting a 2 level hierarchy of objects : function Actual { $someDotnetObject.ACollectionProperty.ASecondLevelCollection | % { $_ } } This method is dumping the objects in a list form (one line per property). How can I control what is displayed, keeping the actual object available? • Laptop is Switching DNS Servers

  Ok sometime ago I changed my ip address to a static one because I was bored and I wanted to learn more about static ips. I am running windows xp. My laptop works find on the network that i set up a static ip address, but when i go to another network, the incorrect dns servers are being used. When I enter the option to get a dns server automatically, the internet connection works but only for a short time. After that the dns servers resets to the one i entered manually on a previous network. I did this by going to Network Connection-Right Click Local Area Connection and go to properties-Select TCP/IP - then click the Properties button. At this point i am given the option to Obtain an ip address or obtain and address automatically. My question is how do I resolve this problem of the dns server reseting to the previous one.

• Jumbo Frames, ISCSI and ESXi

  I have enabled Jumbo Frames (9000) in ESXi for all my vmNICs, vmKernels, vSwitches, iSCSI Bindings etc - basically anywhere in ESXi where it has an MTU settings I have put 9000 in it. The ports on the switches (Dell PowerConnects) are all set for Jumbo Frames. I have a Dell MD3200i with 2 controllers, each with 4 ports for iSCSI. Each of these ports is set to Jumbo Frames (9000) as well. So now the questions: Do I need to log into each Windows Server VM I am running and delve into the NIC properties and manually set it to Jumbo Frames in the NIC properties in the device Manager as well? Whats the best way of testing that Jumbo Frames are indeed working as intended?

• Slow upload to Server 2008 DC, Downloads work as expected

  I have a Windows Server 2008 Domain Controller that I run as a do-it-all server. It has a GbE connection to the network and to every machine on the network. Downloads from the server file shares work as expected, between 70MB/s and 80MB/s to all the machines. However, when I try to copy files back up to the server, speeds fall to 7MB/s-10MB/s. I've disabled flow control and large send offload properties on all the NICs. I had this problem before and managed to fix it through some properties changes, but like an idiot, I never documented my fix and have since moved to a new server. Any ideas what I need to do to get the speeds to be more symmetric? EDIT: Remote differential compression is also disabled.

• Windows XP failing to set theme correctly on auto-login

  On several testing machines we have, when automatic login (as Administrator) is activated, Windows fails to set theme (Display properties - Themes) correctly. Particularly, even if theme is set to "Windows Classic", visually it's obvious that "Windows XP" is applied (the one with blue title bars and red "X" butons). I have only seen this happen when Auto-login is set--we always use Administrator on XP. Even if I log out and back in manually, theme is set correctly. Apart from logging out and in, it's also possible to reset theme in "Display properties". It does not happen in 100% of the cases, but it's way over 50%. Definitely it's often enough to be annoying. I believe this is a bug in Windows XP. I have never encountered it on other Windows versions. Does anybody know how to avoid this issue once forever? (Or can anybody provide explanation, relevant links, etc.?)

  We are using a Meru enterprise wireless network with 180 APs. Recently, many users connections are dropping frequently. After much troubleshooting, we have determined much of the trouble is due to some settings in the advanced properties of the wireless nic on our notebooks. Now we want to send out the changes in a Zenworks bundle, but I cannot find these settings in the registry or anywhere we might be able to send out as a remote package. Does anyone know where to find these settings for an Intel wifilink 5100 card other that the NIC properties itself? We really do not want to manually configure 600 notebooks.

  I remember iTunes used to have the option to "keep music files organized" (i know it still does in its advanced Properties). When I used to edit music's artist, genre or album information. The mp3 file is automatically updated as well. But lately I've been updating some mp3s. And if I tried to open the updated mp3's Properties, under Details, the Artist, genre, and album information is not available. How can i fix this? • Can't change read only folder in windows 7

  I'm trying to run a Spring MVC 2.5 tutorial and when I run the ant script for a deploy, I get this error: deploy: [copy] Copying 2 files to C:\apache-tomcat-7.0.8\webapps\c:\projects\workspace\springapp BUILD FAILED C:\projects\workspace\springapp\build.xml:46: Failed to copy C:\projects\workspace\springapp\war\WEB-INF\web.xml to C:\apache-tomcat-7.0.8\webapps\c:\projects\workspace\springapp\WEB-INF\web.xml due to failed to create the parent directory for C:\apache-tomcat-7.0.8\webapps\c:\projects\workspace\springapp\WEB-INF\web.xml After reviewing the directory: springapp I saw the properties as read-only. No problem I thought as I'm logging in as administrator. However, changing the uac settings, going to a command prompt as admin and then trying to change the properties of the folder with attrib, making me the owner of the folder, changing the security settings etc... did nothing. I can't seem to change this folder to anything. So my question is, how do I change the settings on that folder so ANT can make changes to that folder?

• Network card dies when trying to wake up laptop from sleep

  I have a Dell XPS 1640 laptop (aka Dell Studio XPS 16), running Vista. Whenever the laptop wakes up from sleep, my Broadcomm LAN card immediately dies. Any attempt to access it completely locks up whichever program I use to access it. There appears to be no way to re-awaken the card, other than rebooting; note that Vista does not even shut down properly if some program is waiting for the card. So far, I have tried the following: Disabled the "allow your computer to shut down this device to save power" in the device properties. This had no effect. Attempted to disable and then enable the card in the device properties. No effect. Tried ipconfig /renew: this locks up ipconfig to the point where I can't even kill its process. Force-install updated drivers from broadcomm: no effect. Does anyone have any other ideas ?

When I double-click on it though, it opens up the VBA editor. Do I have to add the items programatically as per the following question How do I add a combobox in Word? or is it possible to do this using the UI? The other question/answer refers to creating a form. Is there a step I've missed between creating a .dot to then create a form somehow before adding form elements to it? • How to set/keep directory permissions?

  I'm using CwRsync to connect from my Windows development machine to a linux webserver : rsync -avuz -e ./ssh --exclude=".svn" /cygdrive/c/xampp/htdocs/project123/ [email protected]:/home/user123/public_html This syncs my development project directory nicely and fast to the server. But after doing this, all directory properties are reset to the local user user123 only, so the website is not available anymore. I need to manually reset those properties. Why is this happening, and how to prevent it? PS. coming from a Windows environment I'm having a really hard time understanding rsync. I copied the above command from some examples... just need to get this one small thing working too...

• How to apply a folder template to more than one selected folder in Vista?

  I would like to apply a folder template to a number of folders. I selected the folders, opened the properties, selected the folder template (e. g. Music Details) and clicked OK. When I checked the folders I noticed that the template was only applied to the folder I performed the right click to open the properties on. The other folders remained untouched. I can't apply the template to the parent folder and use the "Also apply this template to all subfolders" option because the template should only be applied to specific folders and not all. Going over each folder in not an option because it's a large amount of folders. Is it possible to apply a folder template to more than one selected folder at a time?

• Fixing Windows 7 explorer issues

  OK, so here is the problem I'm hoping you guys can help me fix. On my Win7-Ult64 box, my explorer (among other things) has decided not to work. For example, if I try to use a program, say Chrome, to open a folder, I will get the message "Class not registered" (and its not program specific). In the same vein, when I go to Start-Rclick Computer-properties, nothing happens, but I can go to control panel-system properties and it will work. And other items in the control panel do nothing when I click them (and I have a feeling it is all tied together). I have already done multiple virus and spyware sweeps, so I know that isn't the problem. Any suggestions on what could be causing this/how to fix it (short of nuke and boot)?

• Entity Association Mapping with Code First Part 1 : Mapping Complex Types

  Last week the CTP5 build of the new Entity Framework Code First has been released by data team at Microsoft. Entity Framework Code-First provides a pretty powerful code-centric way to work with the databases. When it comes to associations, it brings ultimate flexibility. I’m a big fan of the EF Code First approach and am planning to explain association mapping with code first in a series of blog posts and this one is dedicated to Complex Types. If you are new to Code First approach, you can find a great walkthrough here. In order to build a solid foundation for our discussion, we will start by learning about some of the core concepts around the relationship mapping.   What is Mapping?Mapping is the act of determining how objects and their relationships are persisted in permanent data storage, in our case, relational databases. What is Relationship mapping?A mapping that describes how to persist a relationship (association, aggregation, or composition) between two or more objects. Types of RelationshipsThere are two categories of object relationships that we need to be concerned with when mapping associations. The first category is based on multiplicity and it includes three types: One-to-one relationships: This is a relationship where the maximums of each of its multiplicities is one. One-to-many relationships: Also known as a many-to-one relationship, this occurs when the maximum of one multiplicity is one and the other is greater than one. Many-to-many relationships: This is a relationship where the maximum of both multiplicities is greater than one. The second category is based on directionality and it contains two types: Uni-directional relationships: when an object knows about the object(s) it is related to but the other object(s) do not know of the original object. To put this in EF terminology, when a navigation property exists only on one of the association ends and not on the both. Bi-directional relationships: When the objects on both end of the relationship know of each other (i.e. a navigation property defined on both ends). How Object Relationships Are Implemented in POCO domain models?When the multiplicity is one (e.g. 0..1 or 1) the relationship is implemented by defining a navigation property that reference the other object (e.g. an Address property on User class). When the multiplicity is many (e.g. 0..*, 1..*) the relationship is implemented via an ICollection of the type of other object. How Relational Database Relationships Are Implemented? Relationships in relational databases are maintained through the use of Foreign Keys. A foreign key is a data attribute(s) that appears in one table and must be the primary key or other candidate key in another table. With a one-to-one relationship the foreign key needs to be implemented by one of the tables. To implement a one-to-many relationship we implement a foreign key from the “one table” to the “many table”. We could also choose to implement a one-to-many relationship via an associative table (aka Join table), effectively making it a many-to-many relationship. Introducing the ModelNow, let's review the model that we are going to use in order to implement Complex Type with Code First. It's a simple object model which consist of two classes: User and Address. Each user could have one billing address. The Address information of a User is modeled as a separate class as you can see in the UML model below: In object-modeling terms, this association is a kind of aggregation—a part-of relationship. Aggregation is a strong form of association; it has some additional semantics with regard to the lifecycle of objects. In this case, we have an even stronger form, composition, where the lifecycle of the part is fully dependent upon the lifecycle of the whole. Fine-grained domain models The motivation behind this design was to achieve Fine-grained domain models. In crude terms, fine-grained means “more classes than tables”. For example, a user may have both a billing address and a home address. In the database, you may have a single User table with the columns BillingStreet, BillingCity, and BillingPostalCode along with HomeStreet, HomeCity, and HomePostalCode. There are good reasons to use this somewhat denormalized relational model (performance, for one). In our object model, we can use the same approach, representing the two addresses as six string-valued properties of the User class. But it’s much better to model this using an Address class, where User has the BillingAddress and HomeAddress properties. This object model achieves improved cohesion and greater code reuse and is more understandable. Complex Types: Splitting a Table Across Multiple Types Back to our model, there is no difference between this composition and other weaker styles of association when it comes to the actual C# implementation. But in the context of ORM, there is a big difference: A composed class is often a candidate Complex Type. But C# has no concept of composition—a class or property can’t be marked as a composition. The only difference is the object identifier: a complex type has no individual identity (i.e. no AddressId defined on Address class) which make sense because when it comes to the database everything is going to be saved into one single table. How to implement a Complex Types with Code First Code First has a concept of Complex Type Discovery that works based on a set of Conventions. The convention is that if Code First discovers a class where a primary key cannot be inferred, and no primary key is registered through Data Annotations or the fluent API, then the type will be automatically registered as a complex type. Complex type detection also requires that the type does not have properties that reference entity types (i.e. all the properties must be scalar types) and is not referenced from a collection property on another type. Here is the implementation: public class User{    public int UserId { get; set; }    public string FirstName { get; set; }    public string LastName { get; set; }    public string Username { get; set; }    public Address Address { get; set; }} public class Address {     public string Street { get; set; }     public string City { get; set; }            public string PostalCode { get; set; }        }public class EntityMappingContext : DbContext {     public DbSet<User> Users { get; set; }        } With code first, this is all of the code we need to write to create a complex type, we do not need to configure any additional database schema mapping information through Data Annotations or the fluent API. Database SchemaThe mapping result for this object model is as follows: Limitations of this mappingThere are two important limitations to classes mapped as Complex Types: Shared references is not possible: The Address Complex Type doesn’t have its own database identity (primary key) and so can’t be referred to by any object other than the containing instance of User (e.g. a Shipping class that also needs to reference the same User Address). No elegant way to represent a null reference There is no elegant way to represent a null reference to an Address. When reading from database, EF Code First always initialize Address object even if values in all mapped columns of the complex type are null. This means that if you store a complex type object with all null property values, EF Code First returns a initialized complex type when the owning entity object is retrieved from the database. SummaryIn this post we learned about fine-grained domain models which complex type is just one example of it. Fine-grained is fully supported by EF Code First and is known as the most important requirement for a rich domain model. Complex type is usually the simplest way to represent one-to-one relationships and because the lifecycle is almost always dependent in such a case, it’s either an aggregation or a composition in UML. • Extended JMS Support

  In a previous post I discussed the real time JMS integration we added in FW4.1 and also as patches for FW2.2. There are some additional aspects of this integration I did not mention which may be of interest: JMS Topic Support - In the post I concentrated on talking about JMS Queue support but failed to mention that the MDB and outgoing real time JMS also supports JMS Topics. JMS Queues are typically used for point to point decoupled integration and JMS Topics are used for hub integration that uses Publish and Subscribe. JMS Selector Support - By default the MDB will process every message from a JMS resource (Queue or Topic). If you want to alter this behaviour to selectively filter JMS messages then you can use JMS Selectors to specify the conditions for the MDB to selectively process JMS messages based upon conditions. JMS Selectors allow filters to be specified on elements in the JMS Header and JMS Message Properties using SQL like syntax. Note: JMS Selectors do not support filters on the body elements. JMS Header Support - It is possible to place custom information in the JMS Header and JMS Message Properties for outgoing messages (so that other applications can use JMS selectors if necessary as well). This is only available when installing Patches 11888040 (FW4.1) and 11850795 (FW2.2). These facilities coupled with the JMS facilities described in the previous posts gives the product integration capabilities in JMS which can be used with configuration rather than coding. Of course, the JMS facility I have described can also be used in conjunction with SOA Suite to provide greater levels of traceability and management.
