• Can I run a web site from my home network without jeapordizing other computers on my LAN?

  I have a home LAN with 5 computers and a NAS, all connected to a Linksys router which is connected to my Cox cable modem. I'm interested in having one of my computers run an IIS-based web site and to have it be accessible to the internet with a static IP. However, I do not want o jeapordize the safety of the other computers on my home network! Is there anyway to do this safely, or as safe as possible? I may also like to run an FTP server from this computer. Finally, optionally I would like to allow remote access to this computer from the internet--but it seems to me that that may increase the security risk to the other computers substantially.

• Determining Serial Driver Supported Baud Rates

  Hello. How can I determine the baud rates supported by my serial driver? My driver details (from the Device Manager) follow, but they do not seem very helpful. I am writing an application that is crashing because I am apparently attempting to to set COM1 to an unsupported baud rate, so I need to know which baud rates the driver does support. • Opening an oracle database crashes the service

  I am experiencing a weird issue with Oracle where the service started fine after a crash. The database mount went fine as well. However, when I issue alter database open; command, the database does not open, gives a generic cannot connect to the database error & crashes the service. Oracle support has not seen this issue before so it's pretty scary. The fact that there are no logs that give any leads as to what could be causing this is also scary. I was wondering if good folks over at Server Fault had seen something like this or have some insights on things that I could try. It's Oracle 10g running on Windows Server 2003. Thanks, Ashish

• What is a good hosted email service?

  I am looking for a hosted email service for a handful of email accounts. It needs to be very reliable and provide a nice web mail interface. I would like an admin where I can manage accounts. I've used Communigate before, it's functional but ugly. Exchange web mail is feature rich enough, but isn't as performant as the later two contestants. I am currently paying $50/yearly for hosted Gmail through Google. The features of the web email client are fine for personal use, but not flexible enough for professional use. The administration tools also suck. In short, I want a hosted service with a better experience than gmail or Communigate but is still speedy.

• Terminal command to send data (plain text string) to a port at a remote computer.

  I am trying to send data (plain text string) to a port at a remote computer using terminal utility. The string would be used to trigger something on the remote computer running a program that would listen to that specific port. I used netcat command and tried a few combination of the following but can't seem to get the parameter right.   I have my phone (LG Rumor Touch on Sprint) connected to my Windows 7 computer by Bluetooth. Usually, one of the services is unidentified and no driver is installed. Occasionally I have an issue that is solved by removing and re-pairing my phone with my computer. The last few times I have paired my computer and phone, the unidentified service was found and installed, as "MAS SMS-CDMA". It sounds like an interface that allows sending and reading SMS messages via Bluetooth. However, there is no software available from Sprint or LG that I have found that offers such functionality. Searching Google for "MAS SMS-CMDA" (with quotes) did not provide anything useful, only what appear to be CMDA information written in Spanish. What can I use this service for, and how do I use it?

• 503 service unavailable when debugging PHP script in Zend Studio

  I have a web server with apache 2.0 installed. It comes with Zend Server install pack. When I’m trying to debug my php files apache serves a blank page with 503 service unavailable. Of course slow server-side code is tying up Apache requests for far too long, but I need it to wait, until my debugging comes to end. When I call to the page from a browser it launches ZendStudio debugging my PHP script (request redirects Zend Debugger module). I debug through my script and if I finish debugging in 120 seconds, I normally return to the browser. When it takes more than 120 seconds the browser displays '503 service unavailable' and I can't return to page output. I have even forced 'max_execution_time = 300' 'max_input_time = 600' in php.ini and 'TimeOut = 500' in httpd.conf. No matter whether it is Opera, IE or Firefox. I spent two days googling it, no right answer until now.

• Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running

  This morning I attempted to run Windows Update on two of my Windows 7 PCs (both are virtual machines), and I ran into this interesting pop-up error message. I have never encountered this problem before, so I was somewhat perplexed. From the message, my first thought was to see if the Windows Update service was running. It was. As usual, the solution is never so simple. I attempted to restart the service and reboot the PCs to no avail. So, I am off to the interwebs for a solution. I did find a solution to the problem, so I thought to post it for my future reference and for anyone else who may encounter this problem. I will be posting the answer shortly. If you have alternate solutions that have worked for you, please feel free to leave a post or comment.

I need to set up domain groups for the security setup step: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179530.aspx On Windows Server 2003, specify domain groups for SQL Server services. All resource permissions are controlled by domain-level groups that include SQL Server service accounts as group members. The security admins had to make my account a domain admin - which they were hesitant to do. The account under which SQL Server Setup is running must have permissions to add accounts to the domain groups. Is there a specific security setting which would allow my account to add accounts to a group?

• Intel Rapid Storage Technology service always crashes

  I'm running Windows 7 x64 on a system based on an Asus Z87-Deluxe motherboard; the storage is configured for RAID mode; there is a single SSD drive for the O.S. and two 4-TB disks in a RAID 1 setup for the data. I've installed the latest version of Intel's Rapid Storage Technology drivers, 12.8.0.1016. The program complains about its service not being running, and the service is actually stopped; if I try to start it, it crashes. I've already tried reinstalling the package, but nothing changed. All the disks work correctly, but the RST program is unusable. How can I fix this?

  I would like to reverse proxy my Jira installation on a Windows server 2008 machine. Jira is running under: http://jira.domain.com:8080/ and is accessible as such. The machine also runs IIS for hosting several ASP.NET websites. I now have a “Web farm” node in my IIS instance but I’ve got no idea on how to proceed. I tried adding some rules but this made the rest of my IIS websites stop responding.   We have remote locations each with 2 ASUS media extenders that stream from a computer with a shared Media Player library. Lately, several of these locations experience the "wmpnetwork.exe" service throttling the CPU to 100% usage. Killing the service only results in it starting back up, and so far the only temporary solution is to uninstall Media Player. A lot of these computers are also about 3-5 years old. • OS X Address Not Available - How do I open this port?

  I am trying to get xdebug working on my snow leopard box. It uses port 9000. When I ask slickedit to monitor this port is gives an error that the address is not available. I've gone to canyouseeme.org to see if the port is open. It says the port is NOT open. I've verified that I have that port forwarding to my box from the router and i do NOT have the mac firewall running. I'm stumped. Any ideas?

  Hi, I have a web server ( IIS 7.5 , windows 2008 64 Bit web server ed) and notice that in last few days all web sites on server stopped and cant browser by visitor. I check the event log but I didnt see any things related to this problem. When I try to restart IIS i got error on W3SVC serivce.When IIS try to STOP it, W3SVC goes to stopping state and never stop. so I can't start it again. I try and find that I never can restart the W3SVC and when IIS work fine if I try to restart this service, it goes to stopping and never stop. 1- how can I find the problem on IIS? • Symantec CPS / Backup Exec 11D Service stuck in "Starting" Status

  I have two Windows 2003 (one is SE, one is SBS) both SP2, both are Virtual Machines of Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2. All of a sudden about 2 weeks ago, the Symantec Backup Exec / CPS 11D stopped working on them. One is the Media server, one is our Exchange 2003 Server. There is another copy of CPS on our file server that the service is running fine on. However the one that is fine is not a VM. When I say stop working, the "backup exec continuous protection agent" service is stuck in "starting" status. On the non Exchange server I've tried uninstalling the last Windows Updates that were run some time around the time of failure. I've tried repairing the install of CPS. I've tried uninstalling it and reinstalling. Exact same problem in the end.

  Hi I want to use paltalk, which is a kind of chat software, but the ports that this applications uses are closed in my country. What I need to do is to use a proxy server. Unfortunately the software itself does not provide a proxy setting. • Slow Starting DHCP Client Service - HP Thin Clients

  We have recently began adding XPe thin clients to our domain in preperation for a new citrix environment. One thing that has been picked up on in testing is that they appear slow to boot. The issue manifest's it's self as the classic "Applying Computer Settings..." screen we are all used to seeing. After digging into the issue it appears the DHCP Client service is taking some time to load on boot, this varies but I would estimate it can take around 1 minute in some cases. I've eliminated the classic issues, DHCP is responding correctly and in quick time. DNS is not the cause and GPO's are applying promptly. A simple workaround is to assign the client a static IP which work's great so the TCP/IP servies are obviously firing up quickly, just not DHCP Client. Does anyone have any idea's on how I may be able to improve the service start time? Keen to find a better solution before I get my arm twisted into setting up 250 thin clients with static addressing!

• OpenVPN Setup - Service Won't Start

  I'm in the process of setting up OpenVPN on a VPS running Debian 6. I've walked step-by-step through this guide twice now, and I can't get the service to start. When I start the service, the error reported in the log file is: Cannot ioctl TUNSETIFF tun: Inappropriate ioctl for device (errno=25) I've searched the web a few times and I'm not finding anything helpful. I've tried: Changing file permissions: no change Deleting the file: get an error stating no file found (errno=2) Making a folder named "tun": get an error stating no file found (errno=2) I've wiped my installation and completed the steps verbatim twice now. I get no errors along the way, just the error above within my log file. The contents of my server.conf file are listed below, minus all the comments for brevity. • How to forward blocked ports by ISP

  So I've been trying to setup a TeamSpeak 3 server on my pc but ports (9987,10011,30033) are blocked by my ISP, I've contacted them to unblock them but they didn't accept, and it's the fastest ISP in my city (as living in a 3rd world country) so it's not a good idea to connect to another ISP. The thing is, I've tried Your-Freedom to connect to tunnel my connection & SocksCap. The problem is, when TS works with SocksCap it doesn't show a WAN-IP that friends will use to connect to my server It says "Needs to be Requested" and when I press the Request button, I get nothing. So, any idea what's wrong if someone has done this before? or if you have any other suggestion to run a TS server, would be very glad to hear it and really appreciate that. P.S. as I've mentioned before, living in a 3rd world country, makes me unable to buy a VPS even the cheapest one cause there's no Visa, Credit, or paypal. so that won't work. Thanks in advance.
