• website lookup extremely slow in ubuntu

  Hi I have a wireless broadband connection through a router and wireless modem. Everything works fine in Windows. However, in ubuntu on the same machine, websites seem to take longer to start loading. I think the dns lookup is slow. I think https sites may be slower, as Ijust can't log in to gmail. I am also using a mercurial repo with remote origin, and it takes forever (like 5 minutes) to push one small change. I think it is because it has to communicate through https multiple times. Should I change my dns server? I've seen that I don't have these problems at my work network (they have another dns server). This happens with the IPv4 settings being automatic (dhcp). When I change it to automatic (dhcp) addresses only, and add google's 8.8.8.8 in the dns servers, it still takes forever. Why is this happening?

  Is it possible to save and load data on Today Extension using NSUserDefaults? After closing the Notification Center, the widget behaves like an app which is terminated, so any data results lost. How could I solve this issue?   I thought I set up my key pairs correctly -- I can do git pulls. I can do git commits. But when I do a git push, it counts objects, decompresses, then says: fatal: the remote end hung up unexpectedly. What's the issue here? I'm a super user, so it's not folder writable / readable access problems -- it must be the way I set up the encryption key pair... how do I debug this ... since git pull works?

• Chrome sending of packets to random destinations upon reconnect/disconnect

  Noticed an interesting thing whilst debugging one of my websocket applications that Google Chrome will push out 3 http requests upon a network connection status changing; Quite disconcerting and looks almost as if some malware is checking out to a random server. I don't quite understand the why though since they all return a 502 or have no response code at all since the destination does not exist. On Disconnect: Reconnect: I guess the main question is this normal and what the use is; howcome they wouldn't go for a dns lookup that actually exists?

• Sorting a listview (Win32/C++)

  I'm trying to sort a listview when the user clicks on the column header. I am catching the LVN_COLUMNCLICK notification like so: case LVN_COLUMNCLICK: { NMLISTVIEW* pListView = (NMLISTVIEW*)lParam; BOOL test = ListView_SortItems ( m_hDuplicateObjectsList, ListViewCompareProc, pListView->iSubItem ); break; } However it seems to fail. My test variable is FALSE and my ListViewCompareProc never gets hit (it has a simple return 1 while I am trying to hit a debug point inside of it). Is there something I am missing for sorting a listview?

• How to deal with redirect traffic in widows2003

  I have set up an OpenVPN server on Windows 2003, and I want to route all client traffic through the VPN, so that my clients can connect to the Internet through the VPN server. In the server configuration, I added push "redirect-gateway def1". I know the server needs to be configured to deal with the traffic somehow: for example, on Linux, I can use iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 10.8.0.0/24 -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE. The problem is, I don't know how to deal with the traffic on Windows Server 2003. Is there any way to accomplish this?

• need help from some professional how to redirect old or invalid url

  I recently upgraded a site and almost all URLs have changed. I have redirected all of them (or so I hope) but it may be possible that some of them have slipped by me. Is there a way to somehow catch all invalid URLs and send the user to a certain page and somehow know what URL the person came from so I could log this, and fix those? I'm thinking I could use .htaccess somehow but am not sure how. • Does it exists a way to do a (software) switch between DVI and VGA screens?

  I'd like to know if there is a way (a software, a keyboard combination, etc...) to switch between DVI and VGA screen on the same monitor. I've two PCs connected to the same monitor, far away (80cm) from me. To push the monitor button is not so easy and comfortable as could seems, moreover if you have to do it almost 20 times a day. • Reverse Search Best Practices?

  I'm making an app that has a need for reverse searches. By this, I mean that users of the app will enter search parameters and save them; then, when any new objects get entered onto the system, if they match the existing search parameters that a user has saved, a notification will be sent, etc. I am having a hard time finding solutions for this type of problem. I am using Django and thinking of building the searches and pickling them using Q objects as outlined here: http://www.djangozen.com/blog/the-power-of-q The way I see it, when a new object is entered into the database, I will have to load every single saved query from the db and somehow run it against this one new object to see if it would match that search query... This doesn't seem ideal - has anyone tackled such a problem before?

  hi everyone, whats the best way to configure openvpn clients to go selectively go about using an openvpn connection? i want to setup a vpn server for friends in china, but i dont want them to use it for everything, just so they can access sites like youtube, facebook, cnn, etc. while they are in china through the vpn (these are blocked). it would be nice if the vpn was a backup, so for instance if they are trying to go to facebook (which is blocked), it would go through the vpn connection once finding that the normal connection does not work. this would save a lot of bandwidth cost actually, and give them a better browsing experience. is this a iptable route thing? or a dns server that i push to my clients?

Inside the table is a notifications_type:string column that contains the type of notification, i.e. "foo" or "bar" or "oof" I want the user to be able to select what notifications they want to display, so there are checkboxes below the result that correspond to prefs_display_foo:boolean, prefs_display_bar:boolean in the User model. • Large OSX 10.6 to Windows 7 smb transfers fail?

  I'm connecting to a windows 7 box from a OSX 10.6 box via smb: smb://ftp1 Connection works fine, I can transfer individual files one at a time, but as soon as I try and move an entier folder I get the following error: The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “test” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36) This error happens on all our OSX boxes when trying to push the entier folder to the Win7 box. The folder TEST in the above error message has -R 777 permissions. I can move every image file to the windows box one by one with no errors. But if I try an move the entier folder. bam error out. This error seems to kill the smb client on the Windows box as well. There's an FTP server on the windows box and I can FTP in from the OSX box and move everything just fine. Not sure what is going on here?

• Exchange 2010: Import a PST when Local Move Request fails

  So the trail of tears continues with my SBS 2003 to 2011 migration: all the mailboxes have moved mailbox store from OLDSERVER to NEWSERVER, with the Local Move Requests completing successfully, except for one. I've logged into their machine and have exported their mailbox as a PST. I'm about to import it, but it seems to me that because the mailbox is still on OLDSERVER, even with a new Outlook profile pointing to NEWSERVER in Outlook, it'll push the mail into the current mailbox store on the old server. Please tell me I don't have to blow away her existing mailbox, logon, etc. on the old SBSERVER: is there a way to change the state from "Legacy" to "User Mailbox" without actually moving the mailbox store? Create a new mailbox for her user in NEWSERVER?

One way to avoid headaches is to add support for LDAP in our SaaS (a bit of work, but nothing major) ahead of time and make sure to mention that to IT. I really know nothing about SAP. Does SAP use an internal or external LDAP server usually? Updated question: A Company relies on an Asset management product from SAP. If I wanted to provide a SaaS that shares space in their workflow, is it advisable to use the SAP product authentication service (if it exists), and if so, do they provide an API?

  I have a database with a table which contains a start time and an end time. The user has to select both through the Android app, and then I have to retrieve the two times into my database. For now, I have 2 TimePicker in my xml file, and I have 2 TimePicker in my java file TimePicker start_time = (TimePicker) findViewById(R.id.timePickerStart); Can someone help me know how I should retrieve the times, and use them in java (add a listener, etc.). And also, should I use TimeStamp or Date in the database ? My purpose is to send a notification (Toast?) to the user at those times. So should I retrieve the hour and the minute separately ? I am able to get the event notification whenever Google Finance page loads. Now problem is this that contents of this page is not accessible through javascript. • Can anybody recommend a good data recovery strategy?

  So lets say you've failed at preventing a drive failure, and also, you've failed to make a backup of said drive. Push has come to shove and now you need a way to recover you're precious data. Has anybody out there run into this situation? And if so could you please provide any suggestions on how to recover the data based on your experiences? • Computer won't start when connecting SATA HDD

  I just bough a new HDD some time ago and recently i bought another SATA cable to have both HDDs connected at the same time, to transfer all the files from the older one to the newer. When i connected both of them, the computer started working, i tapped F2 to go to bios to make sure it was detected, and then after 5-10 seconds the computer instantly shut down. After this incident, my computer won't start at all when connecting the SATA power supply to the old HDD. If i connect only my new drive, it works without any problem. If i connect only my old drive, or both the old drive and the new one, and then push on the power button, the cpu fan simply rotates about 5 degrees and then stops.. and that's it, the computer doesn't start, and no sound from the pc speaker either. Is there any way to recover my files from the old HDD and transfer them to my new one? I do not want to use the old HDD any more, i only need to save all my files.

  Ive noticed that when I request a page in ASP.NET (webforms) that does not exist, the 'StaticFile' handler deals with the error notification. Id like to be a bit more helpful in these situations. What is the correct way for me to intercept this 404, and as a result, run some code to redirect the user? Two ways Ive thought of doing which I currently don't really like are: 1 - Create a module that basically does a if (!file.exists($url){redirect to $correctedurl}) 2 - Modify the error.aspx.cs(or the default error page) to do something similar (yuck!)
