  • Categorize the approximate shape of an array of Points in 3D Space

    I have a set of points in 3d space and I want to be able to categorize the shape that best fits them - cube, sphere, cylinder, planar (flat) etc. I've looked at supervised/machine learning but since I need first generate a large training data set that's not really suitable. My dream solution would be a java library with a wonderful magical function something like : public enum ShapeType { CUBE, SPHERE, CYLINDER, PLANAR } public ShapeType CategorizeShapeFromPoints( 3DPoint[] points ) However, any and all help will be appreciated.   • What are the reasons for casting a void pointer?

    I'm learning C++ from scratch, and as such I don't have an expert understanding of C. In C++, you can't cast a void pointer to whatever, and I understand the reasons behind that. However, I know that in C, you can. What are the possible reasons for this? It just seems like it's be a huge hole in type safety, which (to me) seems like a bad thing.

  • Graphviz for documentation.

    I noticed that doxygen uses the graphviz library for creating diagrams. Have you ever used graphviz for generating documentation? Is it worth learning the graphviz for documentation purposes outside the scope of doxygen? Or am I better off to sticking with a standard data modeling package like Visio? I understand the merits of it as a graphing library, but for trying to represent more complex UML (or similar) is it still worth looking into?

    After learning good amount of c++, i'm now into STL containers and algorithms template library, my major concerns are, 1) Is this library same across different platforms like MS, linux n other os? 2) will quality or efficiency of program c++ module decrease with more use of STL containers and algorithms, i think i can't customize it to all needs. 3) Is this template library good to use in linux system programming, kernel modules? 4) lastly can i use this in programming contests, because it relives a lot of coding and pressure off shoulders.
