  • Can't get heroku site updated on custom domain

    I have hosayif.com registered at GoDaddy, and I set up a cname for rails.hosayif.com to point to my heroku app at sharp-meadow-6535.herokuapp.com. I set this up with a previous app, and it worked. I made a new app, renamed the old one, and then renamed the new one so that it is sharp-meadow-6535.herokuapp.com in hopes of not having to change anything at GoDaddy. In theory, rails.hosayif.com and sharp-meadow-6535.herokuapp.com should be the same site, but they are not. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

  • How to approach people you've found through internet with similar programming interests?

    I've recently really dived into Ruby/Rails and I'm falling in love. I have a gut feeling this might be something that could last for a while. What I've been missing is interaction with people who are as passionate about Ruby, Rails and things closely related to these. I live in a relatively small city, but was able to find five local people through a RoR website. Weekly meetups with Macs, beer and bro-love rushed through my mental theater. Seriously though, I have no clue how I could approach these people. I have their e-mail addresses. Any advice?

    I've been a commercial programmer for about 3 years now but all of my commercial work is based upon PHP (with Cake PHP, Wordpress and Wildfire) and ASP.Net (on C#, including MVC 3, Umbraco and Kentico) as well as plenty of HTML/CSS/jQuery examples to show. A future employer has asked me to show my Ruby on Rails potential. I've done Ruby on Rails before for fun, but nothing worthy of commercial showing. What I'd like to know, from a group of programmers, is what would be a good 'portfolio demo' piece for you? What have you seen in the past that impressed you? What are you looking for? For Ruby lead developers specifically, what sort of things are you looking to see in the code? Cheers!

  • Website hosting and deployment

    I'm relatively new to Web Development especially when it comes to infrastructure. I have AngularJS application build and served by brunch.io locally. It uses rails-api JSON data. I'd like to deploy my angular application separately from rails server. For now, JS app is placde inside public directory of backend server and deployed together. It isn't elegant nor effective so I want to use some other hosting service. I was thinking about VPS where I could place both Angular and Ruby applications. I read about NodeJS or Nginx that can serve static files, but I don't have any knowledge or experience with these technologies. How is the best way to provide separate frontend and backend applications communicating with each other?

  • How to register a domain for a beginner?

    I've never registered a .com , .net like domain before, and I would like to do some research before doing so. I currently have a ruby on rails app running Heroku. Is there anything special I have to do prior to registering domain on my ruby on rails app at all? Or is it as easy as just inserting my current Heroku address to mask it with another .com or .net name? Is there some special features I should look for registering domain? Or is it typical for domain seller to just sell domain names only? Any recommendations on sellers? Thank you.

  • Cloud proxying service

    I have an app that mashes up images from Bing image search, it's hosted on Heroku written in rails. The app is client side in javascript, so the mashup is done on an html5 canvas - this means though that if I fetch the images direct from the Bing server, the canvas gets dirty and I can't save it. As a quick work around, i have set up a route on my rails app that simply proxies the request to Bing and passes the result back through. Obviously this is a very poor performance solution and will eat up my dynos very quickly. Can anyone suggest a more suitable option? At the moment I'm thinking maybe Amazon EC2 with apache mod_rewrite rules would be better performing and more cost effective. Is there a cloud service (or an app I could deploy to a cloud service) that would be more appropriate for proxying requests for me so that my javascript can fetch the images without dirtying the canvas?

  • Exception with RubyAMF and Ruby 1.9 although code works

I add the files to a git repository, and I push to github, but I want to keep my secret files out of the git repository. I'm deploying to aws using: git aws.push The following files are in the .gitignore: /config/database.yml /config/initializers/omniauth.rb /config/initializers/secret_token.rb Following this link I attempted to add an S3 file to my deployment: http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/elasticbeanstalk/latest/dg/customize-containers.html Quoting from that link: Example Snippet The following example downloads a zip file from an Amazon S3 bucket and unpacks it into /etc/myapp: sources: /etc/myapp: http://s3.amazonaws.com/mybucket/myobject Following those directions I uploaded a file to an S3 bucket and added the following to a private.config file in the .elasticbeanstalk .ebextensions directory: sources: /var/app/current/: https://s3.amazonaws.com/mybucket/config.tar.gz That config.tar.gz file will extract to: /config/database.yml /config/initializers/omniauth.rb /config/initializers/secret_token.rb However, when the application is deployed the config.tar.gz file on the S3 host is never copied or extracted.   • Configure Apache + Passenger to serve static files from different directory

    I'm trying to setup Apache and Passenger to serve a Rails app. However, I also need it to serve static files from a directory other than /public and give precedence to these static files over anything in the Rails app. The Rails app is in /home/user/apps/testapp and the static files in /home/user/public_html. For various reasons the static files cannot simply be moved to the Rails public folder. Also note that the root http://domain.com/ should be served by the index.html file in the public_html folder. Here is the config I'm using: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName domain.com DocumentRoot /home/user/apps/testapp/public RewriteEngine On RewriteCond /home/user/public_html/%{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f RewriteCond /home/user/public_html/%{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ /home/user/public_html/$1 [L] </VirtualHost> This serves the Rails application fine but gives 404 for any static content from public_html. I have also tried a configuration that uses DocumentRoot /home/user/public_html but this doesn't serve the Rails app at all, presumably because Passenger doesn't know to process the request. Interestingly, if I change the conditions to !-f and !-d and the rewrite rule to redirecto to another domain, it works as expected (e.g. http://domain.com/doesnt_exist gets redirected to http://otherdomain.com/doesnt_exist) How can I configure Apache to serve static files like this, but allow all other requests to continue to Passenger?

    I would like to do something like this config.default_host = 'www.subdomain.example.com' in some of my configuration files, so that object_url helpers produce link beginning with http://www.subdomain.example.com I have tried to search the docs but I did not find anytnig exept ActionMailer docs and http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/Rails/Configuration.html which is not usefull for me, because I do not know in which pat to look.     I'm following the Railscasts tutorial on using OpenID with AuthLogic. This command: $ script/plugin install git://github.com/rails/open_id_authentication.git installs the plugin, but I don't see any OpenID Rake tasks (rake -T). In particular, I can no longer run the task: $ rake open_id_authentication:db:create With previous applications, the Rake tasks were installed without a problem, so what's changed with the plugin? Which version of the plugin do I need to get the behavior I'm looking for? Using Rails 2.3.5.

  • Is unobtrusive RJS files in Rails 3 considered a good idea?

    I'm working on implementing javascript functionality in my rails 3 app. Now that rjs is supposedly unobtrusive (I honestly don't know a lot about rjs), is it still "evil"? It seems to me the downside may be a lack of testability, but partial page updates via rjs seem to be easier than jumping through the rails hurdles to make ajax requests via jquery. Thoughts? Examples?

The file was loaded fine, and I was able to read the contents just fine in this second page. I am trying to show the number of lines in the .csv file in this second page. My controller (semi-pseudocode): class UpcsvController < ApplicationController def index end def create file = params[:upcsv][:filename] ... #params[:upcsv][:file_length] = file.length # Show number of lines in the file #params[:upcsv][:file_length] = file.size ... end end Both file.length and file.size returns '91' when my file only contains 7 lines. From the Rails documentation that I read, once the Submit button is clicked, Rails creates a temp file of the uploaded file, and the params[:upcsv][:filename] contains the contents of the temp/uploaded file and not the path to the file. And I don't know how to extract the number of lines in my original file. What is the correct way to get the number of lines in the file? My create.html.erb: <table> <tr> <td>File length:</td> <td><%= params[:upcsv][:file_length] %></td> </tr> </table> I'm really new at Rails (just started last week), so please bear with my stupid questions. I'd like to go with a service that specializes in Ruby on Rails. I've looked at SpeedyRails and RailsPlayground and they both seem to have pros and cons. Does anyone have experience with either? Does anyone have a different recommendation?
