  • Rails 3: How to validate that A < B where A and B are both model attributes ?

    - by Misha Moroshko
I would like to validate that customer_price >= my_price. I tried the following: class Product < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessor :my_price validates_numericality_of :customer_price, :greater_than_or_equal_to => my_price ... end (customer_price is a column in the Products table in the database, while my_price isn't.) Here is the result: NameError in ProductsController#index undefined local variable or method `my_price' for #<Class:0x313b648> What is the right way to do this in Rails 3 ?

  • How to implement "short" nested vanity urls in rails?

    - by UnSandpiper
I understand how to create a vanity URL in Rails in order to translate http://mysite.com/forum/1 into http://mysite.com/some-forum-name But I'd like to take it a step further and get the following working (if it is possible at all): Instead of: http://mysite.com/forum/1/board/99/thread/321 I'd like in the first step to get to something like this: http://mysite.com/1/99/321 and ultimately have it like http://mysite.com/some-forum-name/some-board-name/this-is-the-thread-subject. Is this possible?

  • Is it possible to route heroku-rails-app to a subdirectory of my custom domain?

    - by ernd enson
I want to setup a rails app on heroku that is part of a website. The website which is hosted on a different server explains the usage of the app, shows a tour, plans, contains a blog on related stuff and so on. I want to route to my_domain/app and the app should respond to that url. The custom_domain add-on doesnt allow to enter directories. How can I configure that or how would you realize that scenario?

  • What's the best way to generate an API reference document using a Rails routes.rb file?

    - by RNHurt
I am trying to document the API for my Rails application and I can't help but wonder if there is a better way to generate an XML file based on my routes.rb file. I'm envisioning something similar to the output of rake routes but in a more friendly, XML type format. Corey has some interesting ideas about using reflection/introspection on the routes file here but it's not quite what I need. Please tell me this is a solved problem and I'm not the first one to think of this. :)

  • Rails 3 beta 3 -- is it time to start using this for new projects?

    - by TMB
Is it time to start new projects in Rails 3? I'm nervous about using beta versions but at the same time I really like what they are doing and don't want to deal with legacy 2.3.5 issues with these apps. Is it better to wait these things out, or buckle-up, deal with early adopter issues and get a head start on the future. Thanks for any light you can shed.

  • Why so many ASP.NET programmers play with Ruby on Rails after working hours?

    - by ITmeze
I saw that on so many blogs. Lots of the people that were dealing with ASP.NET tend to play with Ruby on Rails after working hours. And It is just a matter of last one or two years. Why is it like that? Is it because when ASP.NET MVC showed up people become more open-minded - having joy with programming again they realize that some other folks had that many years ago, and they do not want to miss what they currently have?

  • Is there a way to have three way habtm associations in rails / activerecord?

    - by txwikinger
Often three (or more) way associations are needed for habtm associations. For instance a permission model with roles. A particular area of functionality has many users which can access many areas. The permissions on the area are setup via roles (habtm) The user/roles association is also habtm The permissions (read, write, delete, etc) are habtm towards roles. How would that be best done with rails/activerecord?

  • Moving rails javascript to public while keeping ruby code?

    - by tesmar
Hi guys, I have a project to move some JS code outside of rails into the public direcotry, but some of it has ruby code embedded, and depends on the values of the variables from the controllers to set some of its code. How can I move it out of the view and still maintain the same structure, or do I need to just rewrite the JS from scratch?

  • Which PHP framework is closest to Ruby on Rails? CakePHP? CodeIgniter?

    - by Mike Duncan
I'm going to be switching back and forth between Ruby on Rails projects and some as-of-yet undecided PHP MVC framework projects. Which of the PHP MVC frameworks out there (CakePHP, CodeIgniter?, others?) is most similar to Ruby on Rails in that the most conventions, locations, workflows, etc are preserved? I'm looking for the similarity in the way things are done such as directory structures, conventions, etc, not a pros vs cons in speed, extra features, etc.

  • rake aborted! undefined local variable or method

    - by Subhransu
    In a fresh new Ubuntu machine, I have installed ruby with sudo apt-get install ruby1.8 and then installed rubygem1.8 with : sudo apt-get install rubygems and after that installed rails3.2.8 with : gem install rails The procedure was very simple. But here comes the problem. When I tried checking the version of rake with rake --trace -version I got the following error: rake aborted! undefined local variable or method `rsion' for #<Rake::Application:0xb72c731c> /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.9.2.2/lib/rake/application.rb:316:in `standard_rake_options' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/optparse.rb:1298:in `eval' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.9.2.2/lib/rake/application.rb:316:in `standard_rake_options' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/optparse.rb:1298:in `call' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/optparse.rb:1298:in `parse_in_order' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/optparse.rb:1254:in `catch' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/optparse.rb:1254:in `parse_in_order' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/optparse.rb:1248:in `order!' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/optparse.rb:1339:in `permute!' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/optparse.rb:1360:in `parse!' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.9.2.2/lib/rake/application.rb:425:in `handle_options' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.9.2.2/lib/rake/application.rb:74:in `init' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.9.2.2/lib/rake/application.rb:133:in `standard_exception_handling' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.9.2.2/lib/rake/application.rb:72:in `init' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.9.2.2/lib/rake/application.rb:64:in `run' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.9.2.2/lib/rake/application.rb:133:in `standard_exception_handling' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.9.2.2/lib/rake/application.rb:63:in `run' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.9.2.2/bin/rake:33 /usr/local/bin/rake:19:in `load' /usr/local/bin/rake:19 Is it the problem due to I have installed straight from ubuntu apt-get package manager ?

  • Multi MVC processing vs Single MVC process

    - by lordg
I've worked fairly extensively with the MVC framework cakephp, however I'm finding that I would rather have my pages driven by the multiple MVC than by just one MVC. My reason is primarily to maintain an a more DRY principle. In CakePHP MVC: you call a URL which calls a single MVC, which then calls the layout. What I want is: you call a URL, it processes a layout, which then calls multiple MVC's per component/block of html on the page. When you compare JavaScript components, AJAX, and server side HTML rendering, it seems the most consistent method for building pages is through blocks of components or HTML views. That way, the view block could be situated either on the server or the client. This is technically my ONLY disagreement with the MVC model. Outside of this, IMHO MVC rocks! My question is: What other RAD frameworks follow the same principles as MVC but are driven rather by the View side of MVC? I've looked at Django and Ruby on Rails, yet they seems to be more Controller driven. Lift/Scala appears to be somewhat of a good fit, but i'm interested to see what others exist.

  • How to become a professional web developer from a C/C++ programmer?

    - by user1050165
I am new here. This is my first post on stackoverflow. I am currently a high school student and know how to use Pascal and C/C++ to take part in competitions such as the Informatics in Olympiad. I have learnt data structure and many algorithms to solve various kinds of problems. Now, I want to move on to become a web developer. However, I know web development is quite different from competitive programming. To make a web application, I have to master HTML, Database, Backend programming etc. But these are all look like separate pieces of information. I don't know where to start and what order should I follow. Anybody who can give a comprehensive list of learning points? I know there are HTML, Ruby on Rails, CSS and Javascript. What else? More importantly, can someone give a brief outline of their relationship? I hope I can get help from you asap. Thanks!
