• Where can you find your first customers as a freelancer?

  I want to start doing freelance work, but no matter how I look at it, it seems like the best way to get customers and to have work most of the time, you have to already be in the freelancing game. Most freelancers I've talked to have had the same customers over the years or got new customers because their satisfied clients referred them. What I'd like to know from the successful people here that work as freelancers is how do you start doing business when you haven't yet set foot in freelancing? I want to start small, creating websites that won't require me to hire other people other than maybe a designer I already know. (I'd like to create desktop applications as well, but I think I should keep that for later when I'm more experienced) . I thought about localized Google ads or visiting companies and meeting the people in charge there, but I wouldn't know which kind of businesses to look for or if it's even a good way to approach this. Anyone care to share their personal startup experiences / advice that can help future freelancers?

  We all know the story of the personal computer as a consumer-oriented product. But I just thought that real end user solution should have appeared before that time. So a product that was probably expensive, but allowed using it as a service charging for it, for example computer-terminal for transport time-table access or game machine. On the other site, the video terminals as we know them appeared not so long ago. So if there was something like this, this could be hardware/software most likely offering no interactivity, but probably printing some information based on user actions.

If I have to give read permissions to some files it will be fine. But there are files I have to protect (like file with DB configuration or business logic of application).

  Currently going through a process of testing two AdWords ppc providers at the same time from two separate AdWords accounts. However they will require access to my GA account for linking and ecommerce tracking. Which means that they will be able to see each others results. I dont want this; Is it possible to set up GA so that; Company A only sees Adwords results associated to their AdWords management via GA Company B only sees Adwords results associated to their AdWords management via GA And each company never sees the other company's Adwords results? 100 positive karma points to anyone who can shed some light on this.   In the game I'm designing there is a blast that shoots out from an origin point towards the direction of the mouse. The width of this blast is always going to be the same. Along the bottom of the screen (what's currently) squares move about which should be effected by the blast that the player controls. Currently I am trying to work out a way to discover if the corners of these squares are within the blast's two bounding lines. I thought the best way to do this would be to rotate the corners of the square around an origin point as if the blast were completely horizontal and see if the Y values of the corners were less than or equal to the width of the blast which would mean that they lie within the effected region, but I can't work out

  Hi all, I'm still running Ubuntu 10.04 with quite a few PPAs. Amongst the PPAs there is Guiodic (Guido Iodice) Lucid quasi-rolling :) PPA which brings most recent versions of many programs to my desktop. My steps: sudo update-manager -d click on upgrade on the appearing window wait for the magic to happen: prepare to upgrade and setting new software channels during 'calculating the changes' I will get the following error message in the panel An error occurred, please run Package Manager form the right-click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: ' Error: Marking the upgrade (E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolver generated breaks, this may be caused by help packages.)'This usually means that your installed packages have unmet dependencies When I check Synaptic/apt-get I can't find any errors or hint toward broken packages Could this error be because of many PPA versions being newer than 10.04 original versions?

  I want to edit some .avi videos (cut them, to be precise) in VirtualDub but it failed to open the files. They are encoded in xvid, which I have installed, and play in KMPlayer without problem. Also, all other xvid videos can be opened and cut just fine by VirtualDub. I suspect there's something wrong in the first few bytes of these particular videos (the magic number?). This means I have to open the offending files in a hex editor and make some necessary adjustments to the header. Problem is, they are very large ( 3 GB each) and take very long time to open in UltraEdit. Can UltraEdit open just the first few bytes of a file? If not, do you know of an application that can do that? Edit: I'm using Windows XP.

• As my first professional position should I take it at a start-up or a better known company? [closed]

  I am a couple of months removed from graduating with a CS degree and my gpa wasn't very high. But I do have aspirations of becoming a good software developer. Nevertheless I got two job offers recently. One is with a small start-up and the other is with a military contractor. The military contractor asked for my gpa and I gave it to them. The military contracting position is in developing GIS related applications which I was familiar with in an internship. After receiving an offer from the military contractor, I received an offer from the start-up after the start-up asked me how much the offer was from the military contractor. So the pay is even. The start-up would require I be immediately thrust into it with only two other people in the start-up currently and I would have to learn everything on my own. The military contractor has teams and people who know what their doing and would be able to offer me guidance. Seeing as how I have been a couple of months removed from school and need something of a refresher is it better than I just dive into the start-up and diversify what I've learned or be specialized on a particular track? Some more facts about the start-up: It deals with military contracts as well and is in Phase 2 of contracts. It will require I learn a diverse amount of technologies including cyber security, android development, python, javascript, etc. The military contractor will have me learn more C#, refine my Java, do javascript, and GIS related technologies. I might as well come out and say the military contractor is Northrop Grumman and more or less offered me less money than the projected starting salary from online salary calculators. But there is the possibility of bonuses, while the start-up doesn't include the possibility of bonuses. I think benefits for both are relatively the same.

  What do you do when you are writing a test and you get to the point where you need to make the test pass and you realize that you need an additional piece of functionality that should be separated into its own function? That new function needs to be tested as well, but the TDD cycle says to Make a test fail, make it pass then refactor. If I am on the step where I am trying to make my test pass I'm not supposed to go off and start another failing test to test the new functionality that I need to implement. For example, I am writing a point class that has a function WillCollideWith(LineSegment): public class Point { // Point data and constructor ... public bool CollidesWithLine(LineSegment lineSegment) { Vector PointEndOfMovement = new Vector(Position.X + Velocity.X, Position.Y + Velocity.Y); LineSegment pointPath = new LineSegment(Position, PointEndOfMovement); if (lineSegment.Intersects(pointPath)) return true; return false; } } I was writing a test for CollidesWithLine when I realized that I would need a LineSegment.Intersects(LineSegment) function. But, should I just stop what I am doing on my test cycle to go create this new functionality? That seems to break the "Red, Green, Refactor" principle. Should I just write the code that detects that lineSegments Intersect inside of the CollidesWithLine function and refactor it after it is working? That would work in this case since I can access the data from LineSegment, but what about in cases where that kind of data is private?

  I am using Apache's mod_rewrite to redirect mobile users to my mobile site based on their http_user_agent. However not all pages have a mobile equivalent. Also mobile pages end in .html and "full" pages end in .shtml. Here is some pseudo code. Does the user have a certain HTTP_USER_AGENT? Is there a mobile page? If so take them there. If not, no redirection is needed. I want to do this with apache.

I have two apps in Google chrome-store whose app URL is: app1 URL = www.first.com/currency_converter.php app2 URL = www.first.com/currency_converter.php respectively. Currently if user lunch/click on first app URL then I am forwarding them to my first website homepage (www.first.com), where I have AdSense code with currency converter app. In this way I am generating Google ad impression and traffic for my first website (i.e www.first.com). So is this valid way? Does I am violating any Google AdSense rule? Please provide your reply or suggestions.
