• No Grapical log in or anything just terminal code!!

  I just install the unity alpha state 3, and i came across two errors, one stating it could not install a desktop feature or so and the other just had some errors that i had snap shot the error. When it says it was complete I restarted it and after it booted up, i see a long line of boot codes and then it stop with log in name and the after i put my log in name it ask for a password, but the thing is that their was no graphical lil window having my picture and my name, all I see was codes from terminal even after it admitted me in. Black screen white coding like it was a terminal on full screen only every thing was via terminal!!! HELP!!!!

  Yes, I know that most questions ending with "like Windows" are odd, but this one really bothers me ;) If you ever used some DLNA renderer (in my case DLNA-enabled loudspeakers) you probably know the handy "play to"-feature. From my knowledge of DLNA stuff I would guess, that Windows Media Player is both a DLNA server and control point here, so my question is: Is there any similar software for Linux accomplishing the same thing with minimal configuration effort? I normally use Banshee for my music library, but it doesn't seem that there is anything available for Banshee...

The goal is to monitor incoming bug reports and reduce them, allow never ending features and get ready for scaling 10x. The phrases "test-driven-development" and "continuous-integration" are not even understood by the team cause they were all in the first 2 year product race. Tech team size is 5. • Disabling Bluetooth crashes 3G: can I consider this a bug?

  I'm on an Acer TravelMate 8372G here runnning Ubuntu 11.10 64bit and I get the following weird behaviour: As soon as I turn off bluetoooth, the built-in 3G connection disconnects and Network Manager is unable to reconnect, leaving the following track in syslog: NetworkManager[1205]: <warn> GSM modem enable failed: (32) Unknown error The only way I'm able to reconnect 3G is by going all the way through rfkill unblock bluetooth rfkill block wwan rfkill unblock wwan sudo service network-manager restart My question to you guys: should I file a bug, or is there any any logical connection I'm missing that makes this a feature? = thanks! workflow

• Which Compiz plugins can I safely disable?

  On 11.10, which Compiz plugins are enabled by default? I.e. I should leave them enabled for some particular reason. I've imported my Compiz settings from my previous install and so I can't tell. I'd like to disable all unnecessary plugins because I've noticed the potential for interference or performance issues. I don't think I can trust the CCSM feature "Reset to defaults" because when I use it I need to run unity --reset afterwards in order for my desktop to work again (implying that the default values it resets to are not the values that Ubuntu/Unity requires).

  When I use the emacs shell mode or in gdb, when I type double tab, the emacs pop up a new window which always cover an existed window. While in terminal, when I type double tab, to complete a directory, the terminal just print all the candidates in the same window. It’s a neat look at how the color tastes of an entire industry shift over time. Vijay Pandurangan had a disagreement with a friend about whether or not movie posters were becoming darker/bluer over time. • Better control on code updates

  I will briefly explain my situation. I have a website in PHP, this website is powered by a custom framework + some "plug-in" made ad hoc for it. I am the only developer of this. Until now I just test locally any changes than I upload the php files via FTP. I don't feel confortable anymore with this. The code base has grown quite a lot and I need some sort of system that helps to keep track of changes (line by line) and can restore to an old version easly if something goes wrong. Are there any good solution for this? • Should a primary key be immutable?

  A recent question on stackoverflow provoked a discussion about the immutability of primary keys. I had thought that it was a kind of rule that primary keys should be immutable. If there is a chance that some day a primary key would be updated, I thought you should use a surrogate key. However it is not in the SQL standard and some RDBMS' "cascade update" feature allows a primary key to change. So my question is: is it still a bad practice to have a primary key that may change ? What are the cons, if any, of having a mutable primary key ?

• C++: Checking if an object faces a point (within a certain range)

  I have been working on a shooter game in C++, and am trying to add a feature whereby missiles shot must be within 90 degrees (PI/2 radians) of the direction the ship is facing. The missiles will be shot towards the mouse. My idea is that the ship's angle of rotation is compared with the angle between the ship and the mouse (std::atan2(mouseY - shipY, mouseX - shipX)), and if the difference is less than PI/4 (45 degrees) then the missile can be fired. However, I can't seem to get this to work. The ship's angle of rotation is increased and decreased with the A and D keys, so it is possible that it isn't between 0 and 2*PI, hence the use of fmod() below. Code: float userRotation = std::fmod(user->Angle(), 6.28318f); if (std::abs(userRotation - missileAngle) > 0.78f) return; Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
