  • Dual-boot more than two operating systems

    I currently run Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 as a dual-boot system. I need Linux, but Ubuntu freezes at least once a day. So I want to replace it with another distribution like Debian or LMDE. On the other hand I am a little concerned that I'll have troubles working with a less user friendly operating system than Ubuntu. So would it be possible to just scale down the Windows partition and install the next Linux as a third system? Thus, with a "triple-boot system" I could keep Ubuntu until I feel familiar with the new system. Afterwards, I guess, it should be possible to replace the Ubuntu partition by expanding the new system?

  • Where is the best place to label a server?

    There isn't much room on server chassis and I'm wondering where a label with the servers name should go? Is there any other information in addition to the name that should go on the label? Does it make sense to label each hard drive in a server or is that not necessary? There certainly is overkill, when I worked at Big Blue labeling was a huge source of bureaucracy, even a projector needed to be labelled and have it's whereabouts routinely reported.

I know most of them would welcome it but they did not opt-in for this new related service. I don't want to send out the email invite only to find out I got into some Spam Act trouble.     When I'm logged into our Windows Server 2003 server, I don't see any ODBC Data Sources, but when a different user logs in (who doesn't have Administrative rights), they have a big list of ODBC Data Sources. Are ODBC Data Sources set on a per-user basis? How come the Administrator can't see user's ODBC Data Sources?

    How do one proceed if I want to have 3 Operating Systems: Windows 7, Ubuntu, Debian plus a swap partion, all in all 4 partitions? Lets say I have 2 disks, each 640 GB and make room - 300 GB for Windows 7, 160 GB Ubuntu, 160 GB Debian and the rest for swap 20 GB. Where do I make these partitions, do I first make one big raid array 1 in BIOS and then partition when Windows 7 is installed or do I already in BIOS make these 4 partitions?

  • RHEL 6 x64: running 32 bit applications

    We develop an application which currently works in 32 bit mode only. It worked fine in RHEL 5 but failed to work in RHEL 6. The reason is RHEL 6 by default is installed with 64 bit libraries only. Moreover, we didn't find a way to choose installation of 32bit runtime environment during or after system installation. Of course, we did find a way to install three rpm packages with 32 bit libraries required for our application to work. But it looks like unpleasant for our customers (we have to install three rpms from the DVD in the command line). So the question is: Is there a convenient way for RHEL 6 customers to install 32 bit libraries it their RHEL 6 system? Say, any user-friendly item in menu or a special command that install the same set of 32 bit system libraries that existed in RHEL 5? What are best practicies in such cases?

  • Why would my domain admins turn off UAC? [closed]

    I'm a developer of internal software in our company, I've gotten used to UAC in Win7, I prefer to run with in enabled so that our software works correctly with it enabled. Sysadmins have recently pushed out GPO that turns it off every time we log-in. (So I turn it back on every time I log in.) I can imagine some people are annoyed by it and turn it off, but is that really a good company-wide decision? anyone annoyed by it (local admins) would already have permission to turn it of themselves.. right? On the other hand we don't have to worry creating UAC friendly software if no workstations or servers have it enabled. Is there a good reason for doing this? Other than reducing help-desk calls from users recently upgraded from XP? I can't see the upside of this decision, help me understand.

  • Layer 3 Protocol only in wireshark

    I have a simple question: is there any way in wireshark to avoid resolution of protocol besides the protocol of layer 3 ? For example, in the column protocol, instead of showing http, I want it to show TCP or it's value (6). I can see in menu analyse / enabled protocols we can disable one by one, but for very big traces with lots of differente protocols like "eDonkey" "QUAKE" etc, it's costs a lot of time...

  • SSD installed but system reserved drive is visible, how to fix?

    I've just installed an SSD as primary boot drive. During install, a system reserved partition was allocated (not very big) around 100MB. Problem is the drive is visible in explorer and its assigned to D: Anyone else had this problem, and is there a way to somehow hide that drive from explorer, and also get back the drive letter assignment?     I have an HTTP server running on 127.0.0.1:8000. How can I use iptables or something to route external traffic to it? So the HTML that arrived was a sort of skeleton and ajax was used to fill in the gaps. This is fine and not at all surprising Since the page should be seo friendly it should work fine without js. in step 4 nothing happens in the console and the skeleton page loads pre-populated rendering the ajax unnecessary. This is also completely not confusing in step 7 the ajax calls are made but fail. this is also ok since the urls they are using are not local, the calls are thus broken. The page looks like the skeleton. This is also great and expected. in step 8: no ajax calls are made and the skeleton is just a skeleton. I would have thought that this should behave very much like in step 4 question What I want to do is use urllib2 to grab the html from step 4 but I cant figure out how. What am I missing and how could I pull this off? To paraphrase If I was writing a spider I would want to be able to grab plain ol' HTML (as in that which resulted in step 4). I dont want to execute ajax stuff or any javascript at all. I don't want to populate anything dynamically. I just want HTML. The seo friendly site wants me to get what I want because that's what seo is all about. How would one go about getting plain HTML content given the situation I outlined? To do it manually I would turn off js, navigate to the page and copy the html. I want to automate this. stuff I've tried I used wireshark to look at packet headers and the GETs sent off from my pc in steps 2 and 4 have the same headers. Reading about SEO stuff makes me think that this is pretty normal otherwise techniques such as hijax wouldn't be used. Here are the headers my browser sends: Host: groupon.cl User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0 Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8 Accept-Language: en-gb,en;q=0.5 Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate Connection: keep-alive Here are the headers my script sends: Accept-Encoding: identity Host: groupon.cl Accept-Language: en-gb,en;q=0.5 Connection: close Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8 User-Agent: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0 The differences are: my script has Connection = close instead of keep-alive. I can't see how this would cause a problem my script has Accept-encoding = identity. This might be the cause of the problem. I can't really see why the host would use this field to determine the user-agent though. If I change encoding to match the browser request headers then I have trouble decoding it. I'm working on this now... watch this space, I'll update the question as new info comes up

  • Steve Jobs Proposes New Apple Campus.It’s As Beautiful As An iPad.

    After the launch of iOS 5, OS X Lion and iCloud Steve Jobs proposed Apple’s plans for construction of a new campus in Cupertino. In a presentation to Cupertino City Council, Steve proposed to construct a spaceship style beautiful building that can house 12000 employees. Apple recently purchased 150 acres of land from HP and others in Cupertino and this land will be used for their new campus. The architectural design of the new campus looks awesome just like their products: iPad / iPhone.It’s a four storied circular building with all curved glasses that can accommodate 12000 employees.,  “We do have a shot at building the best office building in the world,” Jobs told the Council members, “Architecture students will come here to see this.”. The facility is going to be eco-friendly with 80% of landscaping with most of the parking going to underground. The current campus has 3700 trees and Apple is planning to increase them to 6000 trees. The campus will be powered with its own renewable energy source and electric grid as backup. Steve described It’s a pretty amazing building. It’s a little like a spaceship landed.   • That’s a wrap! Almost, there’s still one last chance to attend a SQL in the City event in 2012

    The communities team are back from the SQL in the City multi-city US Tour and we are delighted to have met so many happy SQL Server professionals and Red Gate customers. We set out to run a series of back-to-back events in order to meet, talk to and delight as many SQL Server and Red Gate enthusiasts as possible in 5 different cities in 11 days. We did it! The attendees had a good time too and 99% of them would attend another SQL in the City event in 2013 – so it seems we left an impression. There were a range of topics on the event agenda, ranging from ‘The Whys & Hows of Continuous Integration’, ‘Database Maintenance Essentials’, ‘Red Gate tools – The Complete Lifecycle’, ‘Automated Deployment: Application And Database Releases Without The Headache’, ‘The Ten Commandments of SQL Server Monitoring’ and many more. Videos and slides from the events will be posted to the event website in November, after our last event of 2012. SQL in the City Seattle – November 5 Join us for free and hear from some of the very best names in the SQL Server world. SQL Server MVPs such as; Steve Jones, Grant Fritchey, Brent Ozar, Gail Shaw and more will be presenting at the Bell Harbor conference center for one day only. We’re even taking on board some of the recent attendee-suggestions of how we can improve the events (feedback from the 65% of attendees who came to our US tour events), first off we’re extending the drinks celebration in the evening!
