  • How to make sure that grub does use menu.lst?

    On my Ubuntu 9.04 ("Karmic") laptop I suspect grub does not use the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. What happens on boot is that I see a blank screen and nothing happens. When I press ESC I see a boot list which is different from what I would expect from the menu.lst file. The menu lines are different and when I choose the first entry it does not use the kernel options that are in the first entry in menu.lst. Where do the entries that grub uses come from? How can I find out what happens, is there a log? I could not find anything in /var/log/syslog or /var/log/dmesg about grub using a menu.lst. How can I set it to work like expected? But since there is a package for Mac with the same name, the solution for Mac users is hiding the solution for Linux users and our default sshfs.   • Adding autocomplete options to auctex C-c C-e?

    When I'm using auctex with emacs to write LaTeX documents, I would like to be able to add a couple more options to the list of environment types that auctex "recognises" and can autocomplete, namely Theorem, Lemma, Proof, itemize* and a couple of others. Which variable to I need to edit? I have played around in customize-apropos LaTeX and auctex, but I haven't found it. (lisp code snippet to add to my .emacs would be preferred, I don't quite understand the syntax yete)

    I'm trying to install a newer version of libevent than is on my machine, so I can install memcached. However, the install for memcached complains that the libevent library isn't in /usr/lib64 and that it isn't 64bit. What options do I need to pass to ./configure to get it to compile as 64bit and/or into the /usr/lib64 directory?   • Different DPI on MacBook Pro and external monitors - what options are there?

    I have an external monitor connected to my MacBook Pro, the two screens have different DPIs. Ideally I would like them to be the same, but as this is not the case, the best option I can see is reducing the resolution of the MBP screen to bring its DPI as close as possible to the external monitor. This introduces scaling artefacts on the screen, as LCDs don't look good at non-native resolutions. Is there a standard or best way of handling this, and if not, what other options are available?

  • How do I recursively define a Hash in Ruby from supplied arguments?

    This snippet of code populates an @options hash. values is an Array which contains zero or more heterogeneous items. If you invoke populate with arguments that are Hash entries, it uses the value you specify for each entry to assume a default value. def populate(*args) args.each do |a| values = nil if (a.kind_of? Hash) # Converts {:k => "v"} to `a = :k, values = "v"` a, values = a.to_a.first end @options[:"#{a}"] ||= values ||= {} end end What I'd like to do is change populate such that it recursively populates @options. There is a special case: if the values it's about to populate a key with are an Array consisting entirely of (1) Symbols or (2) Hashes whose keys are Symbols (or some combination of the two), then they should be treated as subkeys rather than the values associated with that key, and the same logic used to evaluate the original populate arguments should be recursively re-applied. That was a little hard to put into words, so I've written some test cases. I'd like to be able to set them up with a laptop and browser and then record a history of what they search for and what sites they visit. A Firefox or Chrome plugin would be ideal, but a standalone program is fine too. It doesn't need to be free, just quick and reliable. It doesn't need to be a general PC monitoring program (though that would be OK too) - it's only Web usage I need to track. I've found a few on the Web but am not sure which ones to trust. Your recommendations would be much appreciated.

  • Is this error caused by a 64-bit library being accessed by a Java program running in a 32-bit JVM?

    I'm trying to create a simple Java app that uses JNI to call some native functions. I've followed the examples in the JNI Programming Guide and can't seem to get them to work. I have the following Hello World program, written in Java: class HelloWorld { private native void print(); public static void main(String [] args) { new HelloWorld().print(); } static { System.load("/home/mike/Desktop/libHelloWorld.so"); } } I compile it using javac HelloWorld.java, just like normal. Then I run javah -jni HelloWorld, and finally the following: gcc34 -shared -fpic -o libHelloWorld.so -I/<path to JDK>/include -I/<path to JDK>/include/linux HelloWorld.c gcc34 is the name of the GCC program on my machine here at work (I don't control that) and I obviously place the real path to the JDK in that command. When I run my program, using the standard java HelloWorld, I get an error saying the following: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /home/mike/Desktop/libHelloWorld.so: /home/mike/Desktop/libHelloWorld.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64 (Possible causes: architecture word width mismatch) at java.lang.ClassLoader$NativeLibrary.load(Native Method) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibrary0(ClassLoader.java:1778) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibrary(ClassLoader.java:1674) at java.lang.Runtime.load0(Runtime.java:770) at java.lang.System.load(System.java:1003) at HelloWorld.<clinit>(HelloWorld.java:8) Could not find the main class: HelloWorld. Program will exit. I know I'm running a 32-bit JVM (and unfortunately, as of right now, I'm not allowed to get a 64-bit JVM). I tried telling GCC to compile in 32-bit mode using the "-m32" option, but we don't have (and again, can't get) what we need for that. Does this sound like a 32/64-bit conflict or something else?

  • In Windows 7, can a program overrride file associations not set in "Set Default Programs"?

    I am using Windows 7. I installed a media application (KMPlayer) that does not show up in the "Set Default Programs" list. Now in the KMPlayer's preferences, there's a setting to associate file types with itself. But when I tried that, I noticed that the files still default to Windows Media Player. So can I assume that no external application can change the program associated with a file type unless explicitly done via the: [Set Default Programs] or [Associate a file type ... with a program] or the [Open with...] options? Thanks in advance! Btw, I know there are utilities that can help me batch change it. I'm just more curious about the "rules" that Windows 7 has in place regarding file types and their associated programs.

    I have a Torrent app running on my home server that has an outdated but pretty useful web interface. The one problem is that it doesn't take magnet links, only .torrent files. I'd like to continue using this and not have to bother with finding a different program. Given that magnet links are just a pointer to download the torrent file from the swarm, I'm hoping there's a program out there that will take a magnet link and spit out a .torrent only. I know I could put it into µTorrent and grab the file from the app's directory, but that's a bit roundabout, and I'd like something that will do it semi-unattented. Preferably for OS X, but Linux (or a web app) would work too.

    I used my ntfs formatted hard drive, copied files from a mac using a bridge program, but now i can't see any of the files on my pc help? I brought it from home, (NTFS HD) found that it was only read only.. so i got a bridge program (don't remember) and was able to copy files from the mac to the hard drive. I took it home and went to get into those files, and they do not even show up.. it copied, and did everything it was supposed to do to let me know it was working, but now i can't find any of those files. am I FUBAR? :(

    Hello Few days ago I opened my computer as I always do after school, and got pretty amazed about my 1.27kb/s download-speed. It has continued for few days already. We have a wireless network, which is used by 3 computers. Normally I've gotten 200kb/s (I think we have a 2mb-connection) but now it just suddenly slowed down. My friends have the same service-provider, but no problem. So, is there any kind of program, which would show me all the programs using connection and how much.     Since 2007, I had a Macbook and it has a program called Preview that can highlight and add notes to a PDF file. So for this 3 years, I tried to find a similar program on Windows and it looks like the best is still Adobe Acrobat, about 200MB, 300MB in size, good for 30 days, and if purchased, for about $400. Is there a simple tool on Windows that can let us highlight text (and possibly add notes / annotation)? Just highlighting is good enough and it doesn't look like a very complication operation. thanks.
