• How to automatically start a C# WebService?

  Hi, I have written a C# WebService. The problem is that after I publish it to IIS it won't automatically start unless any of its methods is called. This is very frustrating because this WebService has to continuously do some background work immediately after it starts (its constructor executes). If IIS is restarted, the WebService will just sit idly until one of its methods is called. Is there a way to overcome this and force the WebService to execute its constructor immediately after it is published or IIS restarted?

• Detach many subdirectories into a new, separate Git repository

  This question is based on http://stackoverflow.com/questions/359424/detach-subdirectory-into-separate-git-repository Instead of detaching a single subdirectory, I want to detach a couple. For example, my current directory tree looks like this: /apps /AAA /BBB /CCC /libs /XXX /YYY /ZZZ And I would like this instead: /apps /AAA /libs /XXX The --subdirectory-filter argument to git filter-branch won't work because it gets rid of everything except for the given directory the first time it's run. I thought using the --index-filter argument for all unwanted files would work (albeit tedious), but if I try running it more than once, I get the following message: Cannot create a new backup. A previous backup already exists in refs/original/ Force overwriting the backup with -f Any ideas? TIA

• What's the correct way to hide/prevent access to wp-admin

  I'm dealing with this matter since a while, I have read a ton of articles and stuff out there but I couldn't find a place that shows the RIGHT way, standard, correct, whatever you like to call it, to prevent access to my wp-admin or wp-login.php On all Wordpress sites I see (the well made ones) you will never see anything if you type thesite.com/wp-admin As I could see, one way to do this is by restricting the access to that folder by creating an .htaccess file and restrict by IP the access to the folder. Seems to be the "cleanest" way to do. What I'm not sure about it is that I have a dynamic address provided by my ISP, so on a certain time my IP will change, that will force me to also change the .htaccess to my new address, I don't see that practical. I can set a range also, but by doing that I will also authorize access to all people within that range of IPs (other clients of my ISP for example). I'm then struggling to find the best/standard way to do this. Anyone can help me? Thanks

• In WPF using a ListView is there an elegant way to auto resize items?

  I recently wrote, my first, WPF application that has a list of items that are polled from a web-serivce. The items are displayed/data-bound in a ListView via a GridView. A background thread periodically polls the web-serivce and updates the list. If, say, I had three items initially bound to the ListView that simply display a description and the three descriptions where something like: - ProjectA - ProjectB - ProjectC Later a new item is added with a description of 'AReallyReallyLongProjectName', I would end up with a list like: - ProjectA - ProjectB - ProjectC - AReallyR The GridViewColumn would not update it's width and would subsequently cut off any new items that extended the original width. I added this bit of code which forces the column to resize, but it just seems a little hacky. (Just seems weird to set a width just to set it back to nothing to force the resize) if(gridView != null) { foreach(var column in gridView.Columns) { if (double.IsNaN(column.Width) column.Width = column.ActualWidth; column.Width = double.NaN; } } Is there a better, more elegant solution, to accomplish this same thing?

  I have the following "download" script in PHP which basically makes an address on my website download the file for the user, eg. mysite.com/download.php?fileid=10 The question I have is, how can I send the file name to the used for the download when a user downloads the .php address with a File Downloaders/Accelerators? eg. • How do I use dependencies in a makefile without calling a target?

  I'm using makefiles to convert an internal file format to an XML file which is sent to other colleagues. They would make changes to the XML file and send it back to us (Don't ask, this needs to be this way ;)). I'd like to use my makefile to update the internal files when this XML changes. So I have these rules: %.internal: $(DATAFILES) # Read changes from XML if any # Create internal representation here %.xml: %.internal # Convert to XML here Now the XML could change because of the workflow described above. But since no data files have changed, make would tell me that file.internal is up-to-date. I would like to avoid making %.internal target phony and a circular dependency on %.xml obviously doesn't work. Any other way I could force make to check for changes in the XML file and re-build %.internal?

  Hi, I'm just starting to use the TestHelpers in MvcContrib. I want to try and test an action method on my controller that itself tests if IsAjaxRequest() is true. I've used the same code that is shown in the TestHelper samples to set up the TestControllerBuilder _controller = new StarsController(); _builder = new TestControllerBuilder(); _builder.InitializeController(_controller); So that _controller has all the faked/mocked HttpContext inside it, which is really great. But what do I do now to force IsAjaxRequest() on the internally faked Request object to return true?

• Exception Handling in MVP Passive View

  Hello, I'm wondering what's the preferred way to manage exceptions in an MVP implemented with a Passive View. There's a discussion in my company about putting try/catch blocks in the presenter or only in the view. In my opinion the logical top level caller is the presenter (even if the actual one is the view). Moreover I can test the presenter and not the view. This is the reason why I prefer to define a method in the view interface: IView.ShowError(error) and invoke it from the catch blocks in the presenter: try { } catch (Exception exception) { ...log exception... view.ShowError("An error occurred") } In this way the developers of future views can safely forget to implement exception handling but the IView interface force them to implement a ShowError method. The drawback is that if I want to feel completely safe I need to add redundant try/catch blocks in the view. The other way would be to add try catch blocks only in the views and not introducing the showerror method in the view interface. What do you suggest?

• Connection Timeout Extension/Detection

  Well, let me start off by explaining what I'm trying to do. I have an application that stalls a HTTP connection until new data is available (sometimes a few seconds, sometimes 30 minutes or so). Right now, the system works fine if the data is sent within a few minutes. The problem I'm facing, is that it doesn't seem that XHR recognizes a dropped connection... So instead of killing the current connection and reconnecting when it detects a dropped connection, it just sits there. I'd really not like to have it force-reconnect every minute or two (That's one reason this app was written, to stop the need for polling). So, my questions are as follows: Is there a way to detect a dropped (not closed) TCP connection with XHR? Is there a way that I can tell XHR not to timeout (I saw IE8 has the .timeout property) Would it be better to send a header (or some other content) every now and then (say once per minute) down the pipe to keep the connection open? • Reading from the HTML DOM returns UTF-8 characters

  I have a contenteditable div where I'm reading individual characters and sending them off to a server (for more background this is similar to Google Wave where typing a character automatically sends it) I was using a plain old html textfield before and everything worked fine until I "upgraded" to a contenteditable div. My problem is that now the characters are in UTF-8 format, which is causing some weird problems on the server that I would rather not debug. It would be much easier to force everything to be ASCII on the client side. Is there any way to do this? I tried putting in a meta tag stating the html file is charset=ISO-8859-1, but it doesnt seem to work. Reading from the div tag still returns UTF-8 codes. (One example is when I press space I get the pair 0xC2 0xA0 which corresponds to a "non-breaking white space"

• Trigger the change event of a textbox in jQuery

  I have an asp:TextBox with asp:RegularExpressionValidator to validate if it's a number. Obviously an onchange event will be attached to this textbox while rendering. Also I add a change event at $(document).ready to make some calculation when the value is changed. <asp:TextBox id="myText" runat="server" /> <asp:regularexpressionvalidator id="myRev" ControlToValidate="myText" runat="server">*</asp:regularexpressionvalidator> $(document).ready(function(){ $('[id$=myText]').bind('change',function(){ //do something }).change(); //force the change event at the very beginning }); My function will be executed later than the .net generated js because of the register time. But the .net js throws an error. I traced in the js: function ValidatorOnChange(event) { ... } and found that all of event.fromElement,event.toElement,event.srcElement are null which causes the exception. Did I do something wrong? • How to know if a detached JPA entity has already been persisted or not ?

  I have a JPA entity instance in the web UI layer of my application. I'd like to know at anytime if this entity has been already persisted in database or if it is only present in the user session. It would be in the business layer, I would use entitymanager.contains(Entity) method, but in my UI layer I think I need an extra attribute indicating whether the entity has been saved or not. How implement that ? I'm considering following option for the moment: - a JPA attribute with a default value set by the database, but would force a new read after each update ? - a non JPA attribute manually set in my code or automatically set by JPA? Any advice / other suggestions ? I'm using JPA 1 with Hibernate 3.2 implementation and would prefer stick to the standard.

The r2,v2 line bombs; complaining c.TryGetValue must be given a tuple. Interestingly, in each line the signature of TryGetValue is different. How can I get my custom implementation to exhibit the same behavior as the BCL version? Or, asked another way, since F# has (implicitly) the concept of tuple parameters, curried parameters, and BCL parameters, and I know how to distinguish between curried and tuple-style, how can I force the third style (a la BCL methods)? Let me know if this is unclear.

• Spring-webflow error popup tweak

  There is a link in a spring-webflow2 based application which start different flows. Flows are shown in popup (popup=true). If the session is expired or server is unavailable, the spring-webflow shows small empty popup with "Ajax Request Error" tooltip shown on mouse over. Is it possible to tweak the popup in order to give the user an ability to either re-login or to just close the popup and retry the request? EDIT: Or maybe some ideas how to force Spring-Dojo to make a redirect to login page?

  So I'm making an app where I want the users to be able add, edit and rate content, but I do not want to force them to register. Instead I was planning on just using their device id or device token to identify them. I'm planning on making both an iPhone and Android version, so I'm looking for a general solution, but the iPhone version has higher priority, so an iPhone specific solution would also be welcome. The problem is that I don't want just anyone to be able to use my web service by sending a phony device id or someone else's device id. How would the client prove to the server that it is providing the correct device id?

  Hello, i have a small site in html, that calls certain functions in perl. The site has 2 pages. Page A and B. My problem is when i go from paga B to A or vice-versa, the content of the page isn't reloaded. So if i change something in page B and then go to page A, i still have the content before my changes. How can i allways force the reload and especially the execution on the perl functions that read from files? Thanks.

What I've heard is that since blocks capture local variables referenced within them as const copies, using self within a block can result in a retain cycle, should that block be copied. So, we are supposed to use __block to force the block to deal directly with self instead of having it copied. __block typeof(self) bself = self; [someObject messageWithBlock:^{ [bself doSomething]; }]; instead of just [someObject messageWithBlock:^{ [self doSomething]; }]; What I'd like to know is the following: if this is true, is there a way that I can avoid the ugliness (aside from using GC)?

  I have four objects - for the sake of arguments, let say that they are the following letters: A B C D I need to calculate the number of variations that can be made for these under the following two conditions: No repetition Objects are position agnostic Taking the above, this means that with a four object sequence, I can have only one sequence that matches the criteria (since order is not considered for being unique): ABCD There are four variations for a three object combination from the four object pool: ABC, ABD, ACD, and BCD There are six variations for a two object combination from the four object pool: AB, AC, AD, BC, BD, and CD And the most simple one, if taken on at a time: A, B, C, and D I swear that this was something covered in school, many, many years ago - and probably forgotten since I didn't think I would use it. :-) I am anticipating that factorials will come into play, but just trying to force an equation is not working. Any advice would be appreciated.

• How can I loop over a query for a specific number of times that may be greater than the result?

  I need to loop over a query exactly 12 times to complete rows in a form but rarely will the query return 12 rows. The cfquery endRow attribute doesn't force the loop to keep going if the result is < 12. If it did that would be ideal to use something like cfloop query="myQuery" endRow="12"... The 2 options that I have now are to skip the loop and write out all 12 rows but that results in a lot of duplicate code (there are 20 columns), or do a query of queries for each row which seems like a lot of wasted processing. Thanks for any ideas.

• Why Eclipse does not see .jar file of a library?

  I have a java project in which I have "Referenced Libraries". In the "Referenced Libraries" I have a .jar file of a library that I use (I use only one external library). When I try to "Run - Run" the code I have a NullPointerException. From my previous experience I know that it it (very likely) because my code does not see the library. I just started to use Eclipse and it can be the I do not "connect" libraries in a correct way. Should I use some options or additional action to force Eclipse to see the .jar file of the library? ADDED: By the right click on the library I get a drop-down menu in which I see "Build Path". My be I need to do something there?

• SVN is not recognizing the changed files

  I had made changes in a folder called "branch", and now that its working I want to move all the src folder to the folder "trunk". But by copying src from local branch, pasting on local trunk and commiting the SVN commits nothing. Its like nothing had changed. Any idea how to commit this? Related question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/206183/how-can-i-force-subversion-to-commit-an-unchanged-file (Would work for me, but I know nothing about properties, exactly which one could I change and with which value to not crash something?)

  Hi guys, I'm working on rotating a loaded image. I set the graphics on a JPanel and then use standard AffineTransform in order to rotate it, say, 45 degrees. Unfortunately, the image is being cut, if it exceeds the panel area. How may I force JPanel to add scrolls to itself (while loading an image file, I would like to adjust the size of JPanel by adding the scrolls, without adjusting the size of JFrame). Or, in other words, how to correctly rotate the whole image? Thank you in advance for the reply!

• Commit SVN working copy into Git repository

  I am currently working on a checked out SVN project along with some plugins for that project. I want to keep all of this work - including the current version of my SVN checkout within a single git repository. I thought I had achieved this by checking in the SVN working copy to git. However, when I did a pull on a new computer the SVN working copy had been corrupted. In particular it seemed that git had not checked it any of the .svn/tmp/ and .svn/props/ folders. I have now made a fresh checkout of the SVN project. Is there a way for me to add the ignored folders to my git repo (git status ignores them even though my .gitignore is empty) or force SVN to regenerate them?

• Flex 3 and flash player caching

  hi, i pass text strings from a configuration file into my Flex app, one of the strings i pass in is a mailto link which i use to allow users of my app to send me feedback. I recently needed to change this link however when i updated the link in my config file the change did not happen instantly in my Flex app. In fact i had to clear my cache (both browser and flash player) before the change showed up. This of course is fine for me but how can i be sure that users of the application also get the updated content? Is there a way to force a refresh of data loaded into my swf on other users browsers? Finally is this an issue with my browser cache or the Flash player cache? Does the flash player only keep such data, like my email address, in memory while the app is in use and then clear once it is closed or does it cache this data for the next time the user wants to use the app?   So I am using this to fix PNG transparency on background images in IE6 ul li a { background-image: url('/NewSite/Content/Images/Sprite.png'); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position: 0 -48px; background-image: none; filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.AlphaImageLoader(src=/NewSite/Content/Images/Sprite.png, sizingMethod='crop'); } This works great, however I have run into a problem when trying to implement this with a sprite. The fix ignores the positioning and renders as if the position was top right. Is there a way to force background position or a better way to do this. I would prefer to not use JavaScript or change to gifs. Any help is appreciated!
