• Good workflow for website design

  I would like some idea about a good workflow for Website Design, with a high degree of "offshoring" (Elance, Odesk etc.). I would to do as much as possible "pre production", with client input, ideas etc. stored in IA diagrams, wireframe mockups etc. in something like a Wiki. Also a like the idea about having different people come up with different design proposals. Wouldlike to have some ideas of costs of different phases and tasks ($, %, hours). With Design I mean roughly the aspects of a site that can be done with client-side tools, especially XHTML and CSS. What other tools should I use than IA diagrams.

• Zend Framework Application: module dependencies

  How do you handle dependencies between modules in Zend Framework to create reusable, drop-in modules? E.g. I have Newsletter module, which allows users to subscribe, providing e-mail address. Next, I plan to add Blog module, which allows to subscribe to posts by e-mail (it obviously duplicates some functionality of the newsletter, but the e-mails addresses are stored in User model). Next one is the Forum module, with the same subscribe to post functionality. But I want to have ability to use these modules independent to each one, i.e. application with newsletter alone, newsletter with blog, comibnation two or three modules at once. This is pretty common, e.g. the same story with search feature. I want to have search module, with options to search in all data, blog data or forum data if available. Is there any design pattern for this? Do I have to add some moduleExists($moduleMame), or provide some interface or abstract classes, some base controller pattern, similar for each module?

• SQLite not pluralizing Table Names

  I am using SQLite as my db during development, and I want to postpone actually creating a final database until my domains are fully mapped.   Might be my question is abstract or out of context, but i am asking here since i have little idea how this happens. I am wondering how big application/ platform break down there application in to multiple module and how they able to manage modules dependencies. For example in some E-commerce application they tend to break down it in various modules like pricing,promotions,shipping.import/export and many more. when we develop those application we hardly think about the underlying modules and how they have been designed to provides functionalists. Most of those module are not web-applications but are standalone module and not deployed in the web-app as jar files. can any one help me to understand how they break up things or is there any standard way to do this.any help/resources to get insight will really be helpful

• Optimally place a pie slice in a rectangle.

  Given a rectangle (w, h) and a pie slice with start angle and end angle, how can I place the slice optimally in the rectangle so that it fills the room best (from an optical point of view, not mathematically speaking)? I'm currently placing the pie slice's center in the center of the rectangle and use the half of the smaller of both rectangle sides as the radius. This leaves plenty of room for certain configurations. Examples to make clear what I'm after, based on the precondition that the slice is drawn like a unit circle: A start angle of 0 and an end angle of PI would lead to a filled lower half of the rectangle and an empty upper half. A good solution here would be to move the center up by 1/4*h. A start angle of 0 and an end angle of PI/2 would lead to a filled bottom right quarter of the rectangle. A good solution here would be to move the center point to the top left of the rectangle and to set the radius to the smaller of both rectangle sides. This is fairly easy for the cases I've sketched but it becomes complicated when the start and end angles are arbitrary. I am searching for an algorithm which determines center of the slice and radius in a way that fills the rectangle best. Pseudo code would be great since I'm not a big mathematician.

  Does AMQP has any advantages over an ad-hoc implementation for a simple stats gathering scenario? It works like this - clients send events (more than we care to put into persistent storage) to (several) web workers, the workers aggrregate them and write to a single database. I don't think I should consider using AMQP for this because I'll still need web workers to receive events from clients through HTTP and to publish them. Am I missing something?

I want to calculate displacement and rotation angle of the toy car. I came across some research papers but couldn't find any libraries to the job.   Currently, I have extracted depth points to construct a 3D model from 2 stereo cameras. The methods I have used are openCV graphCut method and a software from http://sourceforge.net/projects/reconststereo/. However, the generated 3D models are not very accurate, which leads me to question: 1) What is the problem with pixel-based method? 2) Should I change my pixel-based method to feature-based or object-recognition-based method? Is there a best method? 3) Are there any other ways to do such reconstruction? Additionally, the depth extracted comes only from 2 images. What if I am turning the camera 360 degrees to obtain a video? Looking forward to suggestion on how to combine this depth information. Thank you very much :)

• Java, Massive message processing with queue manager (trading)

  Hello, I would like to design a simple application (without j2ee and jms) that can process massive amount of messages (like in trading systems) I have created a service that can receive messages and place them in a queue to so that the system won't stuck when overloaded. Then I created a service (QueueService) that wraps the queue and has a pop method that pops out a message from the queue and if there is no messages returns null, this method is marked as "synchronized" for the next step. I have created a class that knows how process the message (MessageHandler) and another class that can "listen" for messages in a new thread (MessageListener). The thread has a "while(true)" and all the time tries to pop a message. If a message was returned, the thread calls the MessageHandler class and when it's done, he will ask for another message. Now, I have configured the application to open 10 MessageListener to allow multi message processing. I have now 10 threads that all time are in a loop. Is that a good design?? Can anyone reference me to some books or sites how to handle such scenario?? Thanks, Ronny

It's easy when I know the causes of the problem, but when it's unexpected behavior it's more complicated. In those cases, I usually turn it as a joke, putting that on the fault of moon phases and tide, but they are likely to prefer their explanations. Do you have any tricks to deal with those users?

• Three most critical programming concepts

  I know this has probably been asked in one form or fashion but I wanted to pose it once again within the context of my situation (and probably others here @ SO). I made a career change to Software Engineering some time ago without having an undergrad or grad degree in CS. I've supplemented my undergrad and grad studies in business with programming courses (VB, Java,C, C#) but never performed academic coursework in the other related disciplines (algorithms, design patterns, discrete math, etc.)...just mostly self-study. I know there are several of you who have either performed interviews and/or made hiring decisions. Given recent trends in demand, what would you say are the three most essential Comp Sci concepts that a developer should have a solid grasp of outside of language syntax? For example, I've seen blog posts of the "Absolute minimum X that every programmer must know" variety...that's what I'm looking for. Again if it's truly a redundancy please feel free to close; my feelings won't be hurt. (Closest ones I could find were http://stackoverflow.com/questions/164048/basic-programming-algorithmic-concepts- which was geared towards a true beginner, and http://stackoverflow.com/questions/648595/essential-areas-of-knowledge-which I didn't feel was concrete enough). • Neccessity of push and pop operands on CPUs

  Why do we have commands like push and pop? From what I understand pop and push are basically the same as doing a (mov then add) and (sub then mov) on esp respectively. For example wouldn't: pushl %eax be equivalent to: subl $4, %esp movl %eax, (%esp-4) please correct me if stack access is not (%esp-4), I'm still learning assembly The only true benefit I can see is if doing both operation simultaneously offers some advantage; however I don't see how it could.

• Best approach to a customer portal in ASP.NET MVC

  Hi All, The problem: client needs a website to serve 10+ customers, each customer has 5-10 people they wish to grant access using login & user name, once "logged in" the user can download files specific to their company. The files will be uploaded to a directory under the customer name, and displayed as a list. Currently using membership for all of the users, it's just the "by customer" segmentation I'm wondering about. the question being under ASP.NET MVC what is the cleanest or simplest approach to solving the customer segmentation, trying to avoid customer membership provider so was going to use the roles to assign customer group. Thoughts appreciated.

• MS SQL Server Job with precise timing

  Hi, I have a DB with game data (map, players, etc...) and I have a game core mechanics writen in T-SQL stored procedure. I need process game loop (via the stored procedure) every "X" seconds. I tried used the SQL Job, but when I set the interval to seconds, the SQL server stops responding. If I set the interval greater than one minute, all was ok. I need game loop precise in time, e.g. the game loop will run only once and will be executed every "X" precisely (tolerance should be less than one second). Can I do it with MS SQL Server capabilities? Or should I create a windows service which will repeatly execute game loop procedure? Or should I go another way? Thanks! EDIT: The game loop stored procedure takes less than the interval.

• Standard term for a thread I/O reorder buffer?

  I have a case where many threads all concurrently generate data that is ultimately written to one long, serial file. I need to somehow serialize these writes so that the file gets written in the right order. ie, I have an input queue of 2048 jobs j0..jn, each of which produces a chunk of data oi. The jobs run in parallel on, say, eight threads, but the output blocks have to appear in the file in the same order as the corresponding input blocks — the output file has to be in the order o0o1o2... The solution to this is pretty self evident: I need some kind of buffer that accumulates and writes the output blocks in the correct order, similar to a CPU reorder buffer in Tomasulo's algorithm, or to the way that TCP reassembles out-of-order packets before passing them to the application layer. Before I go code it, I'd like to do a quick literature search to see if there are any papers that have solved this problem in a particularly clever or efficient way, since I have severe realtime and memory constraints. I can't seem to find any papers describing this though; a Scholar search on every permutation of [threads, concurrent, reorder buffer, reassembly, io, serialize] hasn't yielded anything useful. I feel like I must just not be searching the right terms. Is there a common academic name or keyword for this kind of pattern that I can search on?

• Should frontend and backend be handled by different controllers?

  In my previous learning projects I always used a single controller, but now I wonder if that is good practice or even always possible. In all RESTful Rails tutorials the controllers have a show, an edit and an index view. If an authorized user is logged on, the edit view becomes available and the index view shows additional data manipulation controls, like a delete button or a link to the edit view. Now I have a Rails application which falls exactly into this pattern, but the index view is not reusable: The normal user sees a flashy index page with lots of pictures, complex layout, no Javascript requirement, ... The Admin user index has a completly different minimalistic design, jQuery table and lots of additional data, ... Now I'm not sure how to handle this case. I can think of the following: Single controller, single view: The view is split into two large blocks/partials using an if statement. Single controller, two views: index and index_admin. Two different controllers: BookController and BookAdminController None of these solutions seems perfect, but for now I'm inclined to use the 3rd option. What's the preferred way to do this?

• How to understand existing projects

  Hi. I am a trainee developer and have been writing .NET applications for about a year now. Most of the work I have done has involved building new applications (mainly web apps) from scratch and I have been given more or less full control over the software design. This has been a great experience however, as a trainee developer my confidence about whether the approaches I have taken are the best is minimal. Ideally I would love to collaborate with more experienced developers (I find this the best was I learn) however in the company I work for developers tend to work in isolation (a great shame for me). Recently I decided that a good way to learn more about how experienced developers approach their design might be to explore some open source projects. I found myself a little overwhelmed by the projects I looked at. With my level of experience it was hard to understand the body of code I faced. My question is slight fuzzy one. How do developers approach the task of understanding a new medium to large scale project. I found myself pouring over lots of code and struggling to see the wood for the trees. At any one time I felt that I could understand a small portion of the system but not see how its all fits together. Do others get this same feeling? If so what approaches do you take to understanding the project? Do you have any other advice about how to learn design best practices? Any advice will be very much appreciated. Thank you.

  Hey everyone, I have an ASP.NET MVC 2 project that I'm working on and I'm wondering where I should place some of my code. I currently have a UsersModel which consists of a bunch of static methods that operate against my data context. These methods include such things as: UserExistsInDatabase, UserIsRegisteredForActivity, GetUserIdFromFacebookId etc etc. Should these methods be inside a UsersModel class or would they be more suited to a user helper class outside of the models context?
