I think I need what is called a "persistant install", so that Lubuntu will run off of my flash drive and any changes made will stay there, unlike the demo feature of the CD.

  • Dell All-in-One 810 CD software will no longer install

Later I had reason to uninstall and re-install the printer but whenever I connect the printer Windows installs the printer drivers from its cache without the CD. How can I remove all traces of the drivers from the cache so that it will install only from the CD and not from the Windows driver cache?

    situation: server with RAID 1 (2x1000GB) currently logged in via SSH (network based debian rescue cd) need to accomplish: install a debian based Xen (maybe with: http://wiki.xen.org/xenwiki/LiveCD ?) keep RAID 1 problem: I have no physical access to the server, so i can't just drop in a cd or plug-in a usb drive.     I am new to Ubuntu and tried to install 10.1 as dual boot option from a USB. At first I encountered the error when in partition dialogue of installation process that cannot find root directory. I did a search on Ubuntu forums and did this as in one of the posts. Make sure that the partition file system you wish to install Linux, Ubuntu or Backtrack on it is ext4, ext3 or ext2, and not FAT32 or NTFS. Then mount / on it: During the installation process press "change" on the partition you wish to use Make sure "do not use this partition" scroll is not chosen, scroll to ext4, ext3 or ext2 On the "mount" field write / Click ok, then next a message will appear saying something like "swap area was not defined, do you wish to continue or choose a swap area?", click "ok" and continue or click "go back" and choose another partition and click change, on the file system scroll choose "swap" and click "ok" and next All good but when I rebooted I could not find Windows vista as in dual boot option. Plus I could not see wireless networks and in the process of trying to find out what went wrong the soft switch somehow turned off and as I cannot boot in Windows I have no idea what to do. Again searching internet I found a post which said the dual boot problem can be overcome by installing gparted but when I tried I got the message Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information.. Done E: Couldn't find package gparted I thought I am going to copy my stuff from my hard disk and try to install Windows but I found out that I have two partitions which are different from what I had before installing Ubuntu. I now have filesystem partition1 119 GB ext4, swap partition 5 1.1 GB swap and extended partition 2 1.1 GB. And I cannot mount 119 GB where all my personal videos, photos are if still there. Now I cannot boot from Windows even. Need help on what to do? Best case scenario would be to be able to copy my stuff before I mess up the system further. Else a dual boot system and if not then how do I install vista again. I have Windows CD. Cheers guys and thanks in advance.

    I want to add the bthprops.cpl dll (The bluetooth control panel applet) to my wine install under Ubuntu 10.04 since it is required for Dolphin Emulator. http://www.dolphin-emulator.com/ I copied the file from my windows install into the System32 folder in .wine and into the folder where the application I am trying to run is, but wine still fails to load it. Is there anything else I need to do to make the dll accessible for wine programs? (Please don't suggest the native linux Version of Dolphin as a fix - it is not working for me)

    Based on the results of this post, I'm trying to install Windows SteadyState on a bunch of computers with no internet connection (but all with legitimate copies of windows XP pro). The problem is that the installer asks to be connected to the Windows Genuine Advantage server, and I can't manage that. Is there a workaround? I can use internet at my home, but cannot have the school install and pay for a connection. Maybe there's another program that would work just as well?

  • Recovering from backup without original install media

    A machine from my old job had a complete hard drive failure. I have backups but I'm running into severe problems restoring from them. The only install media was a secondary restore partition on the system's hard drive. I hate whoever came up with that idea more than i can possibly express with words. I spent several days trying to recover the disk - it is pretty well shot and none of my best tricks could even get it to show up in the bios/ The machine that broke is an hp with xp media center edition on it (I don't know why either). The backups were created using the default windows backup tool - I have .bfk file on an external hardrive that i am trying to restore from. I've replaced the hard drive. My home machine is running windows 7 64bit and i'm trying to use it as a platform to restore to the other disk. I downloaded the window 7 nt-restore utility, however no matter what i do it restores to my C drive rather than the specified drive. Fortunately win7 security settings prevented it from being a complete disaster - but still not a happy thing. I tried firing up the xp virtual machine. I can browse to the backups but it says they are invalid and refuse to let me view/ continue with the restore. I tried installing XP to an extra harddrive on my machine - however it bluescreens on me during the install process and I cry. I tried installing xp pro to the new drive and attempted to restore over it, it of course blackscreened on me as that was a stupid idea. I made two partitions on the new hard drive (Apparently the bios on this accursed piece of junk doesn't allow hd partitions larger than 200G anyways and thus fails 40 minutes into the install with an ever-descriptive "Disk Read Error". Guess how i spent last weekend? My last idea was to install xp pro to the second partition and then use it to restore from backup to the first. After the first restart it gives me the error "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware". My brain made one of those bad hard drive clicky noises. I've tried several boot disks but they don't seem to work. If anyone has a link to a good one it would be greatly appreciated. Anyone have any more ideas? - I really hate asking on what seems like such a simple issue but i am quite literally at my wit's end.     I have a server which I'd like to install Ubuntu 12.04 on, but I've had some problems and thought it would be nice to get things working in a Virtualbox VM with the same features as the server. I want to enable UEFI-boot in the VM. I "Enable EFI" in the System / Motherboard settings for the VM. I make sure the Ubuntu Server 12.04 ISO is inserted when I boot. And yet I get stuck in the UEFI boot console when I start the VM. How do I install Ubuntu Server 12.04 in a UEFI boot-enabled Virtualbox machine?

  • Cannot install boot camp 3.1 drivers on windows 7

    Hi all, I have a 64 bit windows 7 install (thru bootcamp) on my 17" macbook pro, with the bootcamp 3.0 drivers. Whenever i run the apple software update to install the 3.1 drivers, it downloads and installs them, then reboots, and when i've rebooted, it's still stuck on version 3.0 according to 'about boot camp' on the system tray icon. I've tried installing several times, it keeps happening. Any ideas? Thanks
