    The company I work for has decided to join the 21st century and upgrade our main database cluster from SQL Server 7 to SQL Server 2005. As a web developer what new whiz-bang features of SQL Server 2005 should I get excited about or get to know? Currently I'm mainly writing CRUD style queries, pretty much exclusively using Stored Procdures for a mixed ASP.net and Classic ASP environment.

    I have a requirement to store the data in encrypted form in database tables. I want to do it at database level but the problems I am facing: ( a) Data Type of the field should be Varbinary. ( b) Encryption is not supported by Workgroup edition ( c) Is it possible to encrypt Numeric Fields? I want to access the encrypted data in tables to fetch in views and stored procedure for some processing but due to above problems I am not able to. Here is my Environment: Development Platform - ASP.Net,.Net Framework 3.5,Visual studio 2008 Server Operating System - Windows Server 2008 Database - SQL Server 2008 Work group edition I was also thinking to adopt a different approach to resolve this issue (yet to test it's feasibility). I was just wondering if I could create a CLR function (which could take parameters to encrypt and decrypt data using Cryptography types provided in .Net framework) and use the CLR integration feature of SQL Server and call that function from stored procedure and views. I am not sure if I am thinking in right direction? Any advice on this as well please.

  • Troubleshooting source of heavy resource-usage on a server 2008 running multiple sites

    Hi, I am running about 10 asp.net websites on a hosted virtual server. The server runs Server 2008 - each website is backed by its own database running on SQL server 2008 on the same box. Lately the box has seemed really slow. The only kind of discovery i could think of doing was looking in the task manager, where i can see w3wp and sqlserver.exe jumping to 40% cpu usage every 5-10 seconds. What are the steps i can take to determine which of my websites is taking these resources and or what database is getting hit the most? I have of course ssms installed on the machine as well. As you can tell, my sysadmin skills are very very limited - any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi, I want to expose my sql server instance via the internet. I've been programming asp.net to sql server for a long time, but for the first time i'm hosting the sql server myself instead of the clients server. So what i want to do is move my sql server from my dev machine at home to a virtual server (yet to hire). But of course i don't want anyone to just enter my sql server but just a few persons. So what i was thinking was to allow only a few ip addresses to the sql server instance. Can anyone tell me how i can expose my sql server to the internet and limit the access to the instance to only a few ip addresses? And ehm, if you know even better ways to secure it, i'd be happy, because this is the first time for me :) Michel

    I am in the process of upgrading my Windows SBS 2008 server running Exchange, Active Directory and as a File server to Windows Server 2012 essentials. Now I know that Windows Server 2012 essentials does not have exchange, thus I was looking to migrate the Active directory and the file server to Windows Server 2012 essentials, Then I would have a separate Virtual machine running Windows server 2012 standard with Exchange 2013. Now my question is, what should I do first? Migrate the AD and File server to Windows 2012 essentials and then after the migration is finished, I create a local move of the mailboxes from SBS 2008 to Windows Server 2012 standard running exchange 2013? or should this be the other way round?

Now in order to use the SQL Server for creating databases, or restoring backups of the databases that I have on my local machine, I need the "sa" password for SQL Server 2008. I have tried using the following but with no luck: sa password "blank password" "same password as the admin password for my EC2 instance" Could someone please guide me as to how to get started with using the Amazon EC2 Datacenter with respect to the "sa" password.     I want to manage permissions and access to a SQL Server database server on a development machine. I've created a local windows group (called DBReaderGroup) and assigned various people to it. The group was created as a SQL Server login successfully: create login [MYMACHINE\DBReaderGroup] from windows My goal is to grant this group read/write access to all databases (which are constantly being added and dropped). Is it possible to configure the right settings so that SQL Server manages this? My biggest challenge is that each time a db is created, I have to update the "User Mapping" settings for this group on the new database. Am I missing something simple?

    Let me preface this by saying this is not an actual situation of mine but I'm asking this question more for my own knowledge and to get other people's inputs here. I've used both Spring and EJB3/JBoss, and for the smaller types of applications I've built, Spring (+Tomcat when needed) has been much simpler to use. However, when scaling up to larger applications that require things like load balancing and clustering, is Spring still a viable solution? Or is it time to turn to a solution like EJB3/JBoss when you start to get big enough to need that? I'm not sure if I've scoped the problem well enough to get a good answer, so please let me know.     I have a SQL Server 2005 SQL Reporting Services implementation. It seems that the only way to actually access the reports is for the users to use Internet Explorer. The web page uses an ActiveX control to do its printing (and probably other functions as well). Does SSRS have a different way to access its functionality via the web browser? Like maybe Java or HTML based? If so, how do I actually turn it on? The reason I am asking is because the security is being tightened and ActiveX controls will be banished, thus the users won't be able to print.

    I have an old server with suse on it and its hosting numerous website under same IP , now i am trying to migrate the websites and all the contents of the old suse server to a new server with open suse 12.1 , i have transferred "/srv/www/vhosts" "/etc/apache2/vhosts.d" "/etc/apache2//httpd.conf" "/etc/apache2/listen.conf" "/etc/apache2/default-server.conf" i have transferred all the database files also . i am trying to replace the old server with the new server , i tried changing the ip address with the old server's ip address but its not working. what files do i need to transfer and what do i need to do to get the new server hosting the websites in place of the old server , please, any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hello. I have a dedicated server, and will be installing SQL Server. However, my hosting company said they can connect an external CD ROM drive and give me KVM over IP to install SQL Server. My question is, what is IPKVM, and how does it work? Do I need special hardware or software on my side to use it....or do I just connect via remote desktop? Also, why can't I remote into my server through remote desktop instead of using KVM over IP?

    Hello all, I am using the SQL Server PHP Driver, I think this question can be answered without knowing what this is. I have come across this many times, what does it mean by NAMES? Column names?: SET NAMES utf8 Is there a query similar to the above that will get my dates to be returned as a string? For some reason on my SQL Sever 2008 on Vista, this works: $connectionInfo = array('Database' => $dbname, 'ReturnDatesAsStrings' => true) But the above 'ReturnDatesAsStrings' does not work on my SQL Server 2005 on a windows server machine? I can't execute any queries after setting the above! Does SQL Server 2005 support ReturnDatesAsStrings? Is there some other parameter I can pass to do the same? Thanks all for any help EDIT I should of mentioned this but if there is a solution I am hoping for one that is in the form of a setting that can be set before any queries can be executed as I do not have control on what queries will be executed.

I have read some quota related documentation and apparently I am not doing anything wrong. //Request the user Agent info String userAgent = req.getHeader("User-Agent"); I wanted to know what was using the CPU the most, I use a google help recommendation. //The two lines below will get the CPU before requesting User-Agent Information QuotaService qs = QuotaServiceFactory.getQuotaService(); long start = qs.getCpuTimeInMegaCycles(); //Request the user Agent info String userAgent = req.getHeader("User-Agent"); //The three lines below will get the CPU after requesting User-Agent Information // and informed it to the application log. long end = qs.getCpuTimeInMegaCycles(); double cpuSeconds = qs.convertMegacyclesToCpuSeconds(end - start); log.warning("CPU Seconds on geting User Agent: " + cpuSeconds); The only thing that the code above tells me is that inspecting the header will use more than a second (1000ms) of cpu time, which for Google is a warning on the log panel. That seems to be a very simple request and still is using more than a second of cpu. What I am missing?

However, when I attempt to install SQL Server on a machine that already has another instance with components I get the following error: *"A component that you have specified in the ADD_LOCAL property is already installed. To upgrade the existing component, refer to the template.ini and set the UPGRADE property to the name of the component."* I have also tried using the UPGRADE method as per the error message #define SQL_UPGRADE "UPGRADE=SQL_Engine INSTANCENAME=MYSQLINSTANCE" but get the following error: "SQL Server Setup cannot perform the upgrade because the component is not installed on the computer. To proceed, verify the component to be upgraded in currently installed, and that the component to be upgraded is specified in the ADDLOCAL property." Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you
