  Let's compare WinRT with .Net .Net .Net is the 13+ years evolution of COM. Three main parts of .Net are execution environment, standard libraries and supported languages. CLR is the native-code execution environment based on COM .Net Framework has a big set of standard libraries (implemented using managed and native code) that can be used from all .Net languages. There are .Net classes that allow using OS APIs. WPF or Silverlight provide a XAML-based UI framework .Net can be used with C++, C#, Javascript, Python, Ruby, VB, LISP, Scheme and many other languages. C++/.Net is a variation of the C++ language that allows interaction with .Net objects. .Net supports inheritance, generics, operator and method overloading and many other features. .Net allows creating apps that run on Windows (XP, 7, 8 Pro (Desktop and Metro), RT, CE, etc), Mac OS, Linux (+ other *nix); iOS, Android, Windows Phone (7, 8); Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox; XBox 360, Playstation Suite; raw microprocessors. There is support for creating games (2D/3D) using any managed language or C++. Created by Developer Division WinRT WinRT is based on COM. So, given the above comparison of conceptually identical technologies, what are incentives (if any) to use WinRT instead of .Net?

• ignore or override current document page formatting with predefined settings automatically libreoffice

  When opening a document made by someone else, I would like the margins to automatically be set to 0.4 cm, the page orientation to landscape and page size to A3. My dad gets emailed a spreadsheet weekly and he prints them off. To fit them onto one page he applies these settings, which is quite laborious. I thought that there must be a quicker way of doing this! I tried creating a new default template with these settings but this only works for a new blank document. I tried to create a style to quickly apply these settings but I realised these styles are document / template specific (?) and so don't appear when opening someone else's document. Anyone have any ideas how I can do this? Thanks =]

• How to configure what certificates can be issued using Web Enrollment in Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise?

  I have a CA installed on of my Windows Servers in a small farm of systems. I've installed the Certification Authority Web Enrollment and Certificate Enrollment Web Service roles on the CA. I want to issue a Computer certificate to a computer not jointed to my domain. The user attempting web enrollment has domain credentials. The user was able to navigate to https://myServerHostname/certsrv and request a User certificate successfully. However, the user needs a Computer cert as well. From the certsrv site, the user tried the following: Advanced Certificate Request Create and Submit a Request to this CA However, the Computer certificate template is not available under the Certificate Template heading. He is only seeing "User" and "Basic EFS". How do I configure the CA to allow him to request a Computer cert for his system?

  Is it possible to declare variable in node and than propage it way down to the erb template? Example: node basenode { $myvar = "bar" # default include myclass } node mynode extends basenode { $myvar = "foo" } class myclass { file { "/root/myfile": content => template("myclass/mytemplate.erb") ensure => present, } } Source of mytemplate.erb: myvar has value: <%= myvar %> I know that my example might be complicated. But I'm trying to propagate file on (almost) all my nodes and I want its content to be altered depending on the node which requests the file. The $myvar = "bar" statement should be default when node does not override its value. Is there a solution to my problem? I'm using puppet 0.24.5

• Using SQL Server profiler from 2008 against R2 database

  On my dev machine I have the management studio tools installed from SQL Server 2008. However, one of the sql server boxes I need to profile against is running R2. Because of this, when I start the profiler and connect to that server all of the templates are gone. If I go to Edit the templates, the R2 server type isn't available as an option. Do I have to upgrade my local toolset to R2 or is there some other way around this? Note, that if I create a template and save it the next time I connect to the server that saved template isn't available.

• How to change the computer name on a server configured by Puppet

  I am new to Puppet and I'm trying to get Puppet to configure my EC2 instances after they're started from a Cloud Formation Template in AWS. The problem is that all the nodes that get started from the Cloud Formation Template all have the same name (the name from the AMI that the new nodes derive from). I would love to find a way to have puppet rename the nodes when the nodes start up. (although, as far as I know, a Computer Name change requires reboot, a separate issue...) If you can point me to some documentation that can help me figure this out or if you have any ideas that would be great. My ultimate goal is to have each EC2 start with a unique name so that I can use New Relic server monitoring to report the different servers.

• Why does Excel now give me already existing name range error on Copy Sheet?

  I've been working on a Microsoft Excel 2007 spreadsheet for several days. I'm working from a master template like sheet and copying it to a new sheet repeatedly. Up until today, this was happening with no issues. However, in the middle of today this suddenly changed and I do not know why. Now, whenever I try to copy a worksheet I get about ten dialogs, each one with a different name range object (shown below as 'XXXX') and I click yes for each one: A formula or sheet you want to move or copy contains the name 'XXXX', which already exists on the destination worksheet. Do you want to use this version of the name? To use the name as defined in destination sheet, click Yes. To rename the range referred to in the formula or worksheet, click No, and enter a new name in the Name Conflict dialog box. The name range objects refer to cells in the sheet. For example, E6 is called name range PRE on multiple sheets (and has been all along) and some of the formulas refer to PRE instead of $E$6. One of the 'XXXX' above is this PRE. These name ranges should only be resolved within the sheet within which they appear. This was not an issue before despite the same name range existing on multiple sheets before. I want to keep my name ranges. What could have changed in my spreadsheet to cause this change in behavior? I've gone back to prior sheets created this way and now they give the message too when copied. I tried a different computer and a different user and the same behavior is seen everywhere. I can only conclude something in the spreadsheet has changed. What could this be and how can I get back the old behavior whereby I can copy sheets with name ranges and not get any errors? Looking in the Name Manager I see that the name ranges being complained about show twice, once as scope Template and again as scope Workbook. If I delete the scope Template ones the error goes away on copy however, I get a bunch of #REF errors. If I delete the scope Workbook ones, all seems okay and the errors on copy go away too, so perhaps this is the answer, but I'm nervous about what effect this deletion will have and wonder how the Workbook ones came into existence in the first place. Will it be safe to just delete the Workbook name manager scoped entries and how might these have come into existence without my knowing it to begin with?

• Komodo Edit - How to disable the 'Linter' for a language?

  I've been using Komodo Edit to work on a Django project. It works great except for one little annoyance: When I am editing Django template files, Komodo likes to put red squiggly lines underneath the first HTML tag that follows a Django tag, because it thinks it is an invalid HTML doc (although it isn't, it just has Django template tags/filters in it). Note that this red squiggly line is called a "Linter error" in the docs that I can find. Is there some way to turn off this red squiggly for only a specific type of language? It's nice to have when working on Python code but it's annoying to have a red squiggly on every single one of my Django templates.

• List all documents (webparts) and sites using a certain solution in sharepoint 2007

  I would like to uninstall a Sharepoint application template (GroupBoard Workspace to be exact) but I want to make sure nothing currently relies on it. I don't see any functions within stsadm that will tell me this information and I have even tried SPM which would work, but with such a huge site it's tedious to go through every single web and page to see which features are in use. Is there a way (probably with SQL using the id from stsadm -o enumsolutions) to list everything that relies on a template within a given solution, including webparts on custom pages? If this is not possible, what is the best way to check dependencies prior to uninstalling a solution (especially since GBW is not the only one on my axe list.) Note: I know that stsadm -o deletesolution will stop me from removing something that is in use, but I want to see all of the things that are using a given solution.

• Link two or more text boxes in Visio

  I am working on creating a template in Visio 2007 (Professional). Each page should reflect a document number and a revision number (two text boxes). I would like to make the template such that entering or changing text in one of these boxes on one page will automatically update the equivalent text boxes on all other pages. Is there an easy way to link two (or more) text boxes to show the same data (mirror each other)? I've looked into creating a ShapeData set and then using the ShapeData field in place of each box, but this will require training others to access and adjust the ShapeData field. In short - I want the issue that was attempting to be solved in Changing Text in Visio Org Chart Shape Changes Multiple Shapes' Text .

• How can I search in transcluded categories?

  I want to add functionality to a MediaWiki wiki to search in specific categories: Platform 1 Platform 2 etc. So I created a template which, based on a certain field, assigns pages to those categories. The template was already included on most of these pages. So now most pages are in either: Category:Platform 1 or Category:Platform 2 Then I thought I just need to add incategory to the search and I'm done, as described on the Wikipedia page. But then I reread it and to my horror discovered: incategory: – using the incategory: parameter returns pages in a given category (as long as the pages are directly categorized, and not transcluded through templates). Eeeek! Is there any other way to search even in transcluded templates? Or any other way of resolving this?

  Four domain users are part of global security group [email protected] running on Windows Server 2008 Standard and Exchange 2007 as a mail non universal group. Our goal is to create an auto-responder rule, or template that fires at sender. I have created a mail-enabled public folder, with owner permissions for each group member. I have also set up a rule template (response) and I am a little unclear as to the send as permission set, or where to set that up. Can someone please tell me if I am on the right track? Will I have to do each Outlook client machine (whole group!) the same?

• Kernel Compiling from Vanilla to several machines

  When compiling kernels for machines is there a safe or correct way to create a template for say servers? I work with a lot of RHEL servers and want to compile them with GRSEC. However, I do not wish to always rebuild off of the .config for each machine and go in and remove a bunch of unrelated modules like wireless, bluetooth, ect... which you typically do not need in servers. I want to create a template .config that can be used on any machine, but is there a safe way to do that when hardware changes? I know with Linux, at least from my experience, you can cross jump hardware way easier then Windows/OSX. I assume that as long as I leave MOST of all the main hardware modules/CPU in that this could create a .config that would work for all or just about any machine?

  We're using Lab Manager within our QA group. We use it to quickly deliver environments we need for testing. We have 25 Templates, 14 Library Configurations and counting. To build up our templates we: Create a base template that is a bare bones version of Server 2008 + basic configuration (Windows Update, Firewall exceptions) Create a linked clone for each Server template we need (SQL Server 08, 05, etc) Repeat for other OS's, like Windows 7 and Windows XP Then we create configurations: Create a workspace configuration with multiple images in it (Say Server 08 w/SQL Server and Windows 7) Deploy the configuration and make some minor configuration changes Undeploy and Capture to Library How do we keep this manageable? When I need to update a configuration, should I: Rebuild it from templates Clone it to a workspace, make changes, recapture it to the library keep the configuration in my workspace (don't delete it after capturing it to library), deploy it to make changes and then re-capture to library

  Where Have All the Composites Gone? I was just asked to help out with an interesting problem at a customer.  All their composites had disappeared from the EM console, none of them showed as loading in the log files and there was an ominous error message in the logs. Symptoms After a server restart the customer noticed that none of his composites were available, they didn’t show in the EM console and in the log files they saw this error message: SEVERE: WLSFabricKernelInitializer.getCompositeList Error during parsing and processing of deployed-composites.xml file This indicates some sort of problem when parsing the deployed-composites.xml file.  This is very bad because the deployed-composites.xml file is basically the table of contents that tells SOA Infrastructure what composites to load and where to find them in MDS.  If you can’t read this file you can’t load any composites and your SOA Server now has all the utility of a chocolate teapot. Having found the problem I now needed to fix it. Fixing the Problem The solution was really quite easy.  First for safeties sake I took a backup of the exported MDS partition.  I then edited the deployed-composites/deployed-composites.xml file to remove the offending <composite-series> tag. Finally I restarted the SOA domain and was rewarded by seeing that the deployed composites were now visible. Summary One possible cause of not being able to see deployed composites after a SOA 11g system restart is a corrupt deployed-composites.xml file.  Retrieving this file from MDS, repairing it, and replacing it back into MDS can solve the problem.  This still leaves the problem of how did this file become corrupt!

• SharePoint and COMException (0x80004005): Cannot complete this action

  I ran into a small issue today working on a deployment.  We were moving a custom ASP.NET control from my development environment into a SharePoint layout page on a staging environment .  I was expecting some minor issues to arise since I had developed the control in an ASP.NET website project, but after getting everything moved over we got an obscure COMException error the that looked like this: Cannot complete this action. Please try again. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException: Cannot complete this action. [COMException (0x80004005): Cannot complete this action. .Lengthy stack trace goes here. Everything in the custom control was built using managed code, so we weren't sure why a COMException would suddenly appear. The control made use of an ITemplate to define its UI, so there was a lot of markup and binding code inside the template. As such, we started taking chunks of the template out of the layout page and eventually the error went away.  It was being caused by a section of code where we were calling a custom utility method inside some binding code: <%# WebUtility.FormatDecimal(.) %> Solution: It turns out that we were missing an Assembly and Import directive at the top of the page to let the page know where to find this method.  After adding these to the page, the error went away and everything worked great.  So a COMException (0x80004005) Cannot complete this action error is just SharePoint's friendly way of letting you know you're missing an assembly or imports reference.

  Automatic Builds for Application Release is a current practice in every major development factory nowadays. Using Team Foundation Server Build 2010 to accomplish this offers many opportunities to improve quality of your releases. The following approach allow us to generate build drop folders including the BuildNumber and the Changeset or Label provided. Using this procedure we can quickly identify the generated binaries in the Drop Server with the corresponding Version. Branch the DefaultTemplate.xaml and renamed it with CustomDefaultTemplate.xaml Open it for edit (check out) Go to the Set Drop Location Activity and edit the DropLocation property. Write the following expression: BuildDetail.DropLocationRoot + "\" + BuildDetail.BuildDefinition.Name + "\" + If(String.IsNullOrWhiteSpace(GetVersion), BuildDetail.SourceGetVersion, GetVersion) + "_" + BuildDetail.BuildNumber Check in the branched template. Now create a build definition named TestBuildForDev using the new template. • Achieving forward compatibility with C++11

  I work on a large software application that must run on several platforms. Some of these platforms support some features of C++11 (e.g. MSVS 2010) and some don't support any (e.g. GCC 4.3.x). I see this situation continuing on for several years (my best guess: 3-5 years). Given that, I would like set up a compatibility interface such that (to whatever degree possible) people can write C++11 code that will still compile with older compilers with a minimum of maintenance. Overall, the goal is to minimize #ifdef's as much as reasonably possible while still enabling basic C++11 syntax/features on the platforms that support them, and provide emulation on the platforms that don't. Let's start with std::move(). The most obvious way to achieve compatibility would be to put something like this in a common header file: #if !defined(HAS_STD_MOVE) namespace std { // C++11 emulation template <typename T> inline T& move(T& v) { return v; } template <typename T> inline const T& move(const T& v) { return v; } } #endif // !defined(HAS_STD_MOVE) This allow people to write things like std::vector<Thing> x = std::move(y); ... with impugnity. It does what they want in C++11 and it does the best it can in C++03. When we finally drop the last of the C++03 compilers, this code can remain as is. However, according to the standard, it is illegal to inject new symbols into the std namespace. That's the theory. My question is, practically speaking, is there any harm in doing this as a way of achieving forward compatibility?

• Teaching high school kids ASP.NET programming

  During the 2011 Microsoft MVP Global Summit, I have been talking to people about teaching kids ASP.NET programming. I want to work with volunteer organizations to provide kids volunteer opportunities while learning technical skills that can be applied elsewhere. The goal is to teach motivated kids enough skill to be productive with no more than 6 hours of instruction. Based on my prior teaching experience of college extension courses and involvement with high school math and science competitions, I think this is quite doable with classic ASP but a challenge with ASP.NET. I don’t want to use ASP because it does not provide a good path into the future. After some considerations, I think this is possible with ASP.NET and here are my thoughts: · Create a framework within ASP.NET for kids programming. · Use existing editor. No extra compiler and intelligence work needed. · Using a subset of C# like a scripting language. Teaches data type, expression, statements, if/for/while/switch blocks and functions. Use existing classes but no class creation and OOP. · Linear rendering model. No complicated life cycle. · Bare-metal html with some MVC style helpers for widget creation; ASP.NET control is optional. I want to teach kids to understand something and avoid black boxes as much as possible. · Use SQL for CRUD with a helper class. Again, I want to teach understanding rather than black boxes. · Provide a template to encourage clean separation of concern. · Provide a conversion utility to convert the code that uses template to ASP.NET MVC.   Yesterday I tried to deploy a Business Data Connectivity Model project created in Visual Studio 2010 to my SharePoint 2010 test server (all RTM versions), but during the deployment of the solution, SharePoint threw my following error: Add Solution:  Adding solution 'BCSDemo2.wsp'...  Deploying solution 'BCSDemo2.wsp'...Error occurred in deployment step 'Add Solution': The default web application could not be determined. Set the SiteUrl property in feature BCSDemo2_Feature1 to the URL of the desired site and retry activation.Parameter name: properties A little bit of searching on the internet taught me that I was not the only one having this issue, actually Paul Andrew describes how to solve it in this post. Although Paul describes what to do, his explanation is not, let’s say, very elaborate. :-) So let’s describe the steps a little bit more in detail: Create a new Business Data Connectivity Model project in Visual Studio 2010 and (optionally) implement all your code, change the model etc. When you try to deploy you get the error mentioned above. To fix it, in the Solution Explorer, navigate to and open the Feature1.Template.xml file (the name could be different if you decided to give your feature a different name of course). Add the following XML in the Feature element that’s already there (replace the Value with the URL of your site of course):  <Properties>    <Property Key='SiteUrl' Value='http://spf.u2ucourse.com'/>  </Properties>The resulting XML should look like:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?><Feature xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sharepoint/">  <Properties>    <Property Key='SiteUrl' Value='http://spf.u2ucourse.com'/>  </Properties></Feature> Deploy the solution, now without any issues. :-) What happens now, is that when Visual Studio creates the SharePoint Solution (the WSP file), it will use the Feature template XML to generate the Feature manifest, which will now include the missing property.
