  • icacls, Network Service, and setting ACLs on Windows Server 2008

    Setting ACLs on Windows Server 2008 via the command line is giving me some problems. As per http://web2.minasi.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC%5FID=26907 I've tried all sorts of variations: C:\Windows\system32icacls "D:\Websites\site.com\Web\bin*" /grant 'NT A uthority\NETWORK SERVICE: (OI) (CI)M' C:\Windows\system32icacls "D:\Websites\site.com\Web\bin*" /grant "NETWORK SERVICE": (OI) (CI)M And all variations in between. However, each try leads to i.e. "Invalid parameter "'NETWORK'"" depending on the variation above. As per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753525%28WS.10%29.aspx (see in comments), it appears that others have experienced the same issue where the same command works on Windows 7/Vista/etc., but not on Windows Server 2008. What's the best way to apply permissions to Network Service account on a directory and/or files via the command line in Windows Server 2008? Especially as there's no way to do multiple file permissions at once via the GUI (see http://serverfault.com/questions/30991/windows-server-2008-change-security-settings-for-multiple-files-at-once).

  • Can't ping IPs for devices not part of Windows Domain

    I have a home network with a Trendnet wireless router and a Windows Domain. The DNS server is on a Windows 2000 Server and is configured to forward queries to DNS servers provided by the ISP. The router provides DHCP and is configured with the Windows 2000 Server as the DNS server. When I connect iPhones to the network over WiFi, the router can ping the iPhones through its browser based admin interface, but Windows machines that are part of the Windows Domain cannot. A laptop was connected to the network over WiFi that wasn't joined to the domain and it could see the iPhones. All machines either have a fixed or DHCP allocated IP on the 192.168.0.* subnet. How do I configure the DNS server or the Windows Domain so that Windows machines can see the iPhones?

  • Print jobs to Epson Stylus Photo 640 all stopped after upgrade 10.04 to 12.04

    Upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04 on 19th oct 2012. Now all print jobs end up in the print queue with the label "Stopped". Reinstalled the printer driver - it is gutenberg 5.2.8 pre1. Looking at "http://localhost:631/jobs" shows an error message by each stopped job as follows:"The PPD version (5.2.5 Simplified) is not compatible with Gutenprint 5.2.8-pre1." Found a long bug-fixing history in bugs.launchpad.net which seem to imply that this problem has been fixed. It seems to be a problem with the installation not updating the ppd files. Is there any workaround to fix this problem?

  • Converting to a mac-book pro for multi disciplined development.

    Hi all, I am in a bit of a bind. I have been contracted to create a small suite of applications for Android, iOS and WP7. Currently I am also on the market for a new notebook for development. Now the issue I have is I can either buy a consumer grade macbook and a laptop or I could just buy an 8gb Ram, SSD, i7 mackbook and virtualise windows 7. I have never used a mac or macbook before so before I go purchase anything I would like to know what your thoughts are on this. Has anyone any experience with this?

  • Calculating distance from viewer to object in a shader

    Good morning, I'm working through creating the spherical billboards technique outlined in this paper. I'm trying to create a shader that calculates the distance from the camera to all objects in the scene and stores the results in a texture. I keep getting either a completely black or white texture. Here are my questions: I assume the position that's automatically sent to the vertex shader from ogre is in object space? The gpu interpolates the output position from the vertex shader when it sends it to the fragment shader. Does it do the same for my depth calculation or do I need to move that calculation to the fragment shader? Is there a way to debug shaders? I have no errors but I'm not sure I'm getting my parameters passed into the shaders correctly.   • Photos - do I really need to look for the author and ask his permission when posting them on my site?

    When I find a photo somewhere on the internet, without any explicit information of whether I can re-publish it on my own website, without any hint of who is the owner/author of that photo, can I still do it? I'm puzzled here cause I've seen like millions of websites, often very big, that repost photos, most probably found via google and it's VERY unlikely they bothered to look for and contact the author of that photos. Is every one of that sites likely to be sued at any moment? What about the case of forums and content provided by users - there is virtually no way of prevention here.

  • Replace gvimext.dll in Windows 8

    How can I get the "Edit with ... using tabs" functionality in gVim on Windows 8 (64-bit)? I'd like to swap out gVim's stock gvimext.dll for one that adds an "Edit with ... using tabs" option to Explorer's right-click context menu. On Windows 7 (64-bit) I used to be able to download the DLL and swap it in by following these instructions. However, I can't get it to work in Windows 8. The stock installation's context menu (sans "... using tabs") works fine (without a restart) ...but after replacing the DLL the gVim context menu options disappear and the gvimext.dll no longer seems to even load. (Windows 8 was restarted) if I again replace gvimext.dll with a backup of the stock DLL, the context menu options remain missing and the DLL still seems to fail to load (Windows 8 was restarted, again) If I re-install gVim, the context menu items return (even without a restart) What is the difference here between Windows 7 (where swapping DLL's works) and Windows 8 (where swapping DLL's fails)?

  • Get the Windows 7 Start Menu Back in Windows 8 with Classic Shell

    I just thought I’d give readers a heads up that you can use Classic Shell to get the old Windows 7 style of start menu back instead of using the new crappy Windows 8 metro start screen; plus it’s free and open source .  You can still access the metro start screen with Shift+WindowsKey or Shift clicking the start menu button.  This program also defaults to showing the desktop on startup instead of the metro start screen (but that can be disabled), and is super configurable and has tons of options to tweak it just the way you want if you are picky like me   The only thing I would say is when installing the app, only install the Classic Start Menu; you don’t need the other ones.   • Issues implementing arcball viewer

    My scene has a simple cube, and a camera built with the lookAt function (I'm using OpenGL). The scene renders fine, and I'm sure I have my model/view/projection matrices set up correctly. Now I'm trying to implement arcball rotation for my camera, but I'm having some trouble. I've got it down to calculating the angle/axis rotation for a virtual sphere in normalized screen coordinates. That means when I move my mouse left to right, I get an angle around the Y axis... and moving my mouse up/down will get me an angle about X. I'm not sure where to go from here -- what do I need to do with my axis so I can apply the angle to simulate camera rotation about its viewpoint? If I try directly applying the axis/angle rotation the camera/view transform I get what you'd expect. The view is rotated about the world axes which the mouse moving over the virtual sphere on the screen corresponds to. So if I move the mouse up/down the view rotates about the world's X axis (what I get reminds me of a first-person view)... but this isn't what I want. I think I need the axis I get to be transformed so it passes through the camera viewpoint and is oriented correct in reference to the camera... but I don't know if that's right or how to do that.

  • Logitech USB keyboard driver not found on Windows 7 x64

    I have a Logitech Internet 350 Keyboard which has been working fine on my Lenovo T400 laptop for well over three years. Just within the past week or so, Windows 7 can no longer find the driver for it. There is no custom driver from Logitech for this device -- it uses the generic Windows USB HID driver. The keyboard works just fine from the BIOS (and Linux which I dual boot this machine), but Windows 7 cannot find or load the driver for it. Any ideas? I smell a Windows update problem, but have no idea how to fix it, and I really am not interested in rolling back updates. New Info: I just tested a generic Dell USB keyboard and it worked just find, with Windows immediately recognizing the device and installing the HID keyboard class driver. So, it seems that Windows has decided not to recognize my specific Logitech keyboard device. I still suspect a Windows update issue, but I would love to hear other suggestions.

  • Windows 7 boot error

    I am running windows 7 professional, everything was working fine until I installed a software driver clearner suggested by nvidia customer service and I cleaned only nvidia graphic driver installation since then my windows does not work at all. I can access everything from startup repair, did lots of time repair but nothing happened. System restore does not work it says c: drive is not available, its 100% there and I can access every file from command prompt. Almost two days passed and I applied every solution discussed on several forums, now only thing left is either install fresh windows (Which i really don't want to do) or update windows (which windows does not let me to do, it says I have to update it from windows) My question is there any way to update (not fresh/custom installation) windows from command prompt? P.s: Safe mode, safe mode command nothing works except startup repair option. I ran sfc /scannow no problem found. I also removed all attached hardwares. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Trying to migrate Windows 7 install of Adobe CS5 to Ubuntu 12.04 with Wine - 'Internal errors - invalid paramters received"

    I have Adobe CS5 installed and running on the Windows 7 side of my machine. Since I'd hate to boot up into Windows just to use Photoshop, I'm trying to get it in Ubuntu 12.04. Tutorials I found suggested that the easiest way to have it in Ubuntu was to install Wine, and copy my Windows installation over. Here are the exact steps I've done up to this point. From Windows, exported the registry key for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Adobe to the desktop. Changed to Ubuntu, downloaded Wine from Software Center Terminal: $ sudo apt-get install wine ttf-mscorefonts-installer $ winecfg $ wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks $ sh winetricks msxml6 gdiplus gecko vcrun2005sp1 vcrun2008 msxml3 atmlib Moved registry export to home folder. Copied "Program Files (x86)\Adobe" to "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Adobe" "Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe" to "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Common Files/Adobe" "Documents and Settings\Don\Application Data\Adobe" to "~/.wine/drive_c/users/don/Application Data/Adobe" "Windows\System32\odbcint.dll" to "~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/odbcint.dll" ,and lastly "Windows\System32\odbc32.dll" to "~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/odbc32.dll". From Terminal, $ wine regedit adobe.reg. Right clicked on Photoshop.exe and selected "Open with Wine". Got the message "Wine Program Crash, Internal errors - invalid parameters received." So to restate my question, How can I get Photoshop running in Ubuntu 12.04? I'm not sold on doing it in this specific way, I just want to use Photoshop without having to reboot.   • Sync data between a windows desktop app and windows mobile client app

    I need to knock up a very quick prototype/proof of concept application to demo to someone within the next couple of days so I've minimal time to research this as fully as I normally would. The set-up is a very simple database application running on a laptop - will only ever be a single user updating a couple of tables so I was thinking of knocking up a basic Win Forms app against SQL Compact. Visual Studio's auto generated data grid edit screens will be fine with a little customisation. The second aspect is to then add a windows mobile client application that can pull data from both tables stored on the laptop, edit some data and insert some extra rows before sending the changes back to the laptop copy of the database. I've not done any WinMo development so what's the best approach for me to look at. Is it easy enough to sync data between the two databases when the WinMo device is connected to the laptop with USB? Most of the samples I've looked at so far seem to be syncing SQL Compact with SQL Standard using IIS which seems a bit overkill. The volumes of data to be synced are so small that I can easily write some manual sync code if it's easy for me to query/update the Compact DB from the laptop application when the device is connected.

When I go into the Backup and Restore options on the machine, it shows several backups. Is it safe to delete the older ones? Or is it an incremental backup, that means that files not changed since before the last backup would then be lost?

  • What are some fast methods for navigating to frequently used folders in Windows 7?

    (This is a followup question from my previous question.) In windows XP I used to be able to quickly navigate to frequently used folders by making use of the 'Favorites' menu item and the hotkey behaviour. In certain conditions it could be set up so that getting to a particular folder was as easy as alt-a x (and without a file explorer window open it was as fast as win-e alt-a x). I am struggling to get anywhere near this speed in Windows 7 and would like to solicit advice from others regarding fast folder navigation to see if I am missing any methods. My current way to navigate quickly is basically move hand to mouse move cursor to navigation pane/pain. scroll all the way to the top (because normally I the panel is focused on whatever deep directory structure I am already in). sift through my 50+ favorites to get the one I want, or click a link to a folder that contains further links in some sort of 'pseudo-tree' functionality. select it. This is slower than my previous method by upwards of an order of magnitude. There are a couple of things I've contemplated: add expandable folders, not just direct links, to the favorites menu. add expandable folders, not just direct links, to the start menu. add links of my favorite folders to a submenu of the start menu so that they come up when I search them. They do but this still rather cumbersome started using 7stacks - url here (I cannot link the url directly due to lack of reputation but http://www.alastria.com/index.php?p=software-7s). This is about the closest I've gotten to some sort of compact, customizeable, easy to access, tree based navigation structure. How do you power users quickly navigate to your favorite folders? Are there keyboard shortcuts I am missing? Can someone recommend other apps or addon or extensions that can achieve this sort of functionality? The Current solution (thanks to the answers below) I am going to use is a combination of Autohotkey and 7stacks - autohotkey to launch 7stacks, 7stacks with the 'menu' stack type for fast, key-enabled navigation to folders organised in a tree structure. This solves about 90% of the issue, the only issues are (note that these are really minor, I am really splitting hairs more than anything here) Can't use this for existing folder navigation (ie already have a explorer window open, want to go to another directory) A bit more cumbersome to add/remove entries to compared to xp favorites. A little slower than xp favorites. Whatever. I'm happy. Thanks guys.   • Please wait for User Profile Service... on WIndows 7 takes around 1-2 minutes to process

    When loggging into our domain, after entering account credentials the log in process takes around 1-2 minutes before it gets past the User Profile Service, the rest of the process takes 2-3 secs. This effects all machines running Windows 7 Enteprise 32-bit and is on fairly high spec laptops (SSD drives, i5 2.93Ghz CPU, 4GB memory). Is there any way to speed this up or is this time delay acceptable? Thanks in advance.

  • Windows explorer doesn't open My Documents, Music or anything when clicking the library?

    I recently installed Windows 7, and for some reason my Libraries don't open to My Documents, Music and so on.. I can access my files by typing into the explorers address bar, but clicking anything doesn't do anything, it just stays on the same screen. What's wrong? Since this is occurring on a relatively new install, I currently have 259GB free out of 297GB on my HD. The My Documents folder only has about 500 mb of Data.

  • Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Server - RemoteApp - Option "Start in" available?

    we have set up a Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Server. On this server, we want to run an application which needs another path for the option "Start in" than the application itself. In a shortcut, this is no problem (for example, the "Target" is C:\app\bin\application.exe and the "Start in:" is C:\app\users\user1). But I have no option for "Start in" when I configure the RemoteApp so the application fails to start. Is there any possibility? Thank you in advance Frank

    Hi, I'd like to host a VirtualBox instance on my ubuntu machine, using WindowsXP as my Guest machine. I'd like to know if i can use an X11 ( Xming/Putty/SSH -X) to run VirtualBox on my Windows 7 machine remotely. Also, if it is possible, could i disconnect from it (while it's still running) and reconnect to it from a different machine?
