  I'm looking for an installable or hosted software (service) to handle the process of public users subscribing to the Magazine and receiving the PDF automatically upon an admin upload the new one.   Can you recommend a package that allows me to manage subscriptions to certain content on my website (not necessarily displayable) based on payment levels? Ideally, the software would allow logging in using both site-specific registration and PayPal/Facebook/Twitter/MyOpenId, etc. Preferably, it would also be open source, LAMP-based. One idea that I have in mind is hacking a shopping cart software like Zen-Cart but this may be an overkill if a non-shopping lighter-weight package exists.

• Northwind now available on SQL Azure

  Two weeks ago I made available a copy of [AdventureWorks2012] on SQL Azure and published credentials so that anyone from the SQL community could connect up and experience SQL Azure, probably for the first time. One of the (somewhat) popular requests thereafter was to make the venerable Northwind database available too so I am pleased to say that as of right now, Northwind is up there too. You will notice immediately that all of the Northwind tables (and the stored procedures and views too) have been moved into a schema called [Northwind] – this was so that they could be easily differentiated from the existing [AdventureWorks2012] objects. I used an SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) project to publish the schema and data up to this SQL Azure database; if you are at all interested in poking around that SSDT project then I have made it available on Codeplex for your convenience under the MS-PL license – go and get it from https://northwindssdt.codeplex.com/. Using SSDT proved particularly useful as it alerted me to some aspects of Northwind that were not compatible with SQL Azure, namely that five of the tables did not have clustered indexes: The beauty of using SSDT is that I am alerted to these issues before I even attempt a connection to SQL Azure. Pretty cool, no? Fixing this situation was of course very easy, I simply changed the following primary keys from being nonclustered to clustered: [PK_Region] [PK_CustomerDemographics] [PK_EmployeeTerritories] [PK_Territories] [PK_CustomerCustomerDemo]   If you want to connect up then here are the credentials that you will need: Server mhknbn2kdz.database.windows.net Database AdventureWorks2012 User sqlfamily Password sqlf@m1ly You will need SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) 2008R2 installed in order to connect or alternatively simply use this handy website: https://mhknbn2kdz.database.windows.net which provides a web interface to a SQL Azure server. Do remember that hosting this database is not free so if you find that you are making use of it please help to keep it available by visiting Paypal and donating any amount at all to [email protected]. • OSX: Python packages fail to install, error message "/usr/local/bin: File Exists"

  I keep trying to install django and other python packages, and I keep getting the exact same error message: Installing django-admin.py script to /usr/local/bin error: /usr/local/bin: File exists So I look to make sure that my /usr/local folder is okay. At first glance it appears okay, until I try cd-ing into my bin. It says it can't because it's not a directory.   I just installed Calibre for ebook management via apt-get on Ubuntu 10.04, however I found out that it's one major version behind the current release, so I decided to reinstall it directly from sources. When I uninstalled the packaged version, apt added bunch of dependencies to the autoremove queue, and as I installed newer version of Calibre from sources, it has no knowledge of it being dependent on those packages. Now I basically have all libraries that I want, but they are still in the autoremove queue. The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required: libqt4-script libqt4-designer libqt4-dbus python-lxml python-cherrypy3 python-encutils libqt4-xmlpatterns libqt4-help python-qt4 python-clientform python-sip python-django python-mechanize libqt4-svg python-django-tagging libphonon4 libqt4-xml libqt4-assistant libqt4-webkit libqt4-scripttools python-beautifulsoup python-pypdf python-dateutil python-cssutils Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them. How do I tell apt that I want to keep these packages installed, without reinstalling them manually?

  I'm currently working on developing/deploying a Django application on Apache and am often fiddling with the debug settings which alter how Django accepts connections, ignoring or using ALLOWED_HOSTS. If DEBUG is False, it uses them, which is handy to keep up some walls around my construction site. However, the useful info it spits out when True is quite nice. I'm currently just using an SSH tunnel and just allowing localhost when DEBUG is False, but how can I keep everyone out without relying on the aforementioned ALLOWED_HOSTS? Editing the httpd.conf file which is in source control is a bit irritating; I've accidentally committed a few botched configs.

• How to run a website domain without redirecting if IP is already used for another website? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Hosting multiple distinct folders for distinct domains 1 answer I bought a VPS Host that gave me only 1 IP Address which I used on my first domain name and it works without any problems. Now my second domain name I can't use the same ip address as it points to the first domain name. So I figured my only option was to use a GoDaddy hosted iframe redirection which redirects to a sub folder on my first domain which worked so far. Now I'm trying to load paypal from <?php headers() ?> and I get a permission error because of that iframe Refused to display 'https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?notify_url=&cmd=_cart&upload=1&business=removed&address_override=1' in a frame because it set 'X-Frame-Options' to 'SAMEORIGIN'. How do I avoid the Iframe solution for my second domain while not messing up my first domain? Somebody I forgot once told me it doesn't matter if you have 1 IP Address you could host multiple websites on it? how it that possible the DNS doesn't seem to work off ports afaik, yes I could host multiple websites on different folders but that's not what I call hosting a real website it has to be pointed by a domain name, so this iframe issue doesn't happen My server configuration is httpd (apache) that comes with CentOS 6 (Linux) operating system

• Recovering a damaged microSDHC

  I just bought from eBay a Kingston 32GB microSDHC that was advertised as defective. The seller said that there could be formatting problems or with transfer of large files. Unfortunately, when I got it, it was a total mess. My Nikon camera doesn't read it at all (OK, maybe it doesn't support 32GB) My Linux laptop doesn't mount it: can't read superblock The same laptop refuses to mkfs.msdos because it failed whilst writing reserved sector The same laptop, under Windows, doesn't read nor format the card HTC HD2 mounts the MMC, allows me to write via USB, but is unable to open the just written files OK, folks, now you would say I would have to go through Paypal complaint... that's not that easy. I consciously bought a half-price card that was known to show some defects, and Paypal complaints take time. Obviously, I can't accept somebody sold me a completely use-less computer decoration. So I'll keep it as last option. My question is Do you know a way, under either Linux or Windows, to thoroughly scan, test and possibly repair memory cards, even if I have to lose some percentage of space because of bad sectors? If I can keep at least half of the card intact it would certainly be fine. I used to do broken sector marking with hard disks in the past. They had set it up so that when i changed django.fcgi file, which put django & my project on pythonpath, my project code was instantly recompiled. Because of that a friend set up hosting for our shared project in his server using fastcgi. It has been set up and the python scripts execute as they should, but what we do not know is, how to set it up so that my project would be recompiled when my setup file has been changed. Alan

• SSL timeout on some sites, across all browsers, on Mac OS X Snow Leopard

  For the past several weeks, I've been receiving "Error 7 (net::ERR_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out" when I attempt to connect to either Twitter or Paypal via SSL. I get this specific error in Google Chrome, but the same problem occurs in both Safari and Firefox. Other sites work fine, and other computers on my network can access these two sites. I have no firewall settings that would prevent me from accessing these sites over port 443. I notice that both Twitter and Paypal both have "Verisign Class 3 Extended Validation SSL CA" certificates. It is unclear whether this is related to the problem. In an effort to troubleshoot, I attempted to open the test sites referenced on Verisign's root certificate support page, which worked fine. Just to be sure, I downloaded and installed the root package file and installed all included Verisign certificates. No joy. I feel like I've hit a dead end. Any ideas? Update the first: I also cannot connect to FedEx.com, who also has a Verisign Class 3 Extended Validation cert. Update the second: Aaaaaaand it fixed itself. I did nothing. Or, I did something that worked, but in a delayed fashion. Frustrating, but a win is a win. I'll take it.

• Restart single uWSGI application (when it's in emperor mode)

  I'm running uWSGI in emperor mode to host a bunch of Django sites based on their individual configs. These are supposed to update when it detects a change in the config file and this largely works when I just touch uwsgi.ini the relevant file. But occasionally I'll mess something up in the Django site and the server won't load. Yeah, yeah, I should be testing better but that's not really the point. When this happens, uWSGI seems to mark the site as dead and stops trying to run it (seems to make sense). Even after I fix the underlying issue, no amount of touching will get that site's uWSGI process up and running. I have to reload the whole uWSGI server (knocking dozens of sites out at once for a few seconds). Is there a way to force uWSGI to just reload one of its sites?

  I heard recently that Nginx has added caching to its reverse proxy feature. I looked around but couldn't find much info about it. I want to set up Nginx as a caching reverse proxy in front of Apache/Django: to have Nginx proxy requests for some (but not all) dynamic pages to Apache, then cache the generated pages and serve subsequent requests for those pages from cache. Ideally I'd want to invalidate cache in 2 ways: Set an expiration date on the cached item To explicitly invalidate the cached item. E.g. if my Django backend has updated certain data, I'd want to tell Nginx to invalidate the cache of the affected pages Is it possible to set Nginx to do that? How?

  At work, we have lots of information squirreled away in many different sites -- wikis, product docs, ticketing system, etc -- many of which require authentication. I'm very interested in having a single way to search all our various silos, and in my spare time have looked at Nutch, Grub, Django + Haystack, etc. None of these is a complete solution a la Google Mini or Google Search Appliance. Has anybody built a basic intranet search engine out of a mixture of these tools? Would you have recommendations about how to go about it? I like Django, and Haystack seems to be a mildly popular search solution for it, but I'd need to wire up a crawler that can support crawling authenticated sites to it.

  We have 2 servers. One is old server and another is the new one. Currently we about doing a migration because the old server is not capable enough to handle everyday requests. The specs are: Old server Ubuntu 10.04 Nginx as Reverse Proxy Apache WSGI Python/Django New Server Ubuntu 10.04 Nginx Gunicorn Python/Django Celery+Redis Our manager asked us to research if the old server can perform multiple forwarding to all incoming request, for example, set Nginx of old server to forward all request to both old and new server. The purpose is to perform unit testing to new server using old server as comparer, see if the new server is ready to take over the role. Please help, if there is an idea, or must install some engine, or what we do is impossible. Many thanks.
