• Could someone help me understand SQL TDE Database encryption?

  I don't quite follow how it works. According to the MSDN Article there is a big hierarchy of keys protecting other keys and passwords. At some point the database is encrypted. You query the database which is encrypted, and it works seamlessly. If you're able to simply connect to the database as normal and not have to worry about any of the encryption from a developer point of view, how exactly is it secure? Surely anyone can simply connect and do select * from x and the data is revealed. Sorry my question is a bit scattered, I am just very confused by the article.

• Help parsing long (3.5mil lines) text file, line by line and storing data, need a strategy

  This is a question about solving a particular problem I am struggling with, I am parsing a long list of text data, line by line for a business app in PHP (cron script on the CLI). The file follows the format: HD: Some text here {text here too} DC: A description here DC: the description continues here DC: and it ends here. DT: 2012-08-01 HD: Next header here {supplemental text} ... this repeats over and over for a few hundred megs I have to read each line, parse out the HD: line and grab the text on this line. I then compare this text against data stored in a database. When a match is found, I want to then record the following DC: lines that succeed the matched HD:. Pseudo code: while ( the_file_pointer_isnt_end_of_file) { line = getCurrentLineFromFile title = parseTitleFrom(line) matched = searchForMatchInDB(line) if ( matched ) { recordTheDCLines // <- Best way to do this? } } My problem is that because I am reading line by line, what is the best way to trigger the script to start saving DC lines, and then when they are finished save them to the database? I have a vague idea, but have yet to properly implement it. I would love to hear the communities ideas\suggestions! Thank you.

  I need a bit of help figuring something out. First off, I'm not very well versed with FreeBSD servers, etc. but with some direction hopefully I can get this fixed. I'm using FreeBSD and installed Monit so I could monitor some of the processes that run tomcat, apache, mysql, sendmail, clamav. So far, I'm only successful in getting apache & mysql to be monitored. I'm getting this error for clamav in the log file for /var/log/monit.log 'clamavd' failed, cannot open a connection to UNIX[/usr/local/etc/rc.d/clamav-clamd] My config file for clamav in /etc/monitrc is: #################################################################### # CLAMAV Virus Checks #################################################################### check process clamavd with pidfile /var/run/clamav/clamd.pid group virus start program = "/usr/local/etc/rc.d/clamav-clamd start" stop program = "/usr/local/etc/rc.d/clamav-clamd stop" if failed unixsocket /usr/local/etc/rc.d/clamav-clamd then restart if 5 restarts within 5 cycles then timeout Honestly, I really don't know much of what's going on here. My host who helped me get the box set up basically installed clamav, but doesn't offer this kind of detail in supporting me, so I'm left to figure this stuff out on my own as I own the box, but they provide the isp service. Is there anyone who can help me troubleshoot this? Thanks for your help in advance.

• Can not install Ubuntu 12.04 or 12.10 on Toshiba qosmio x870. Please help!

  I have a new Toshiba qosmio x870 and for the past one week I have been trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 from a USB and Live CD without success. I keep on getting this error: Boot failure: a proper digital signature was not found. One or more files on the selected boot device was rejected by the Secure Boot feature. I even tried installing Ubuntu with the Windows installer. After installation and I reboot the PC, first I see the error that points to: \ubuntu\winboot\wubildr.mbr Status: 0xc000007b Info: The OS couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors. When I restart, that the previous error doesn't show up and I see both Windows 8 and Ubuntu (happy that I was successful) but when I click on Ubuntu, it flags an error. This is the first time I'm having a Secure Boot-capable PC. What will be the danger in disabling the secure boot? I'll be happy if I can get assistance from anyone.

  I've been trying to get my dual desktops working on Ubuntu for a while. I previously had them as one large desktop, but that was incredibly slow for some reason. I tried to switch them to multi display desktop on the AMD Catalyst Control Center. • I can't enable extra effects in Ubuntu 10.10. Please help?

  I installed Ubuntu 10.10 alongside Ubuntu 11.10 to use an older version of Compiz. On Ubuntu 11.10, Compiz was enabled by default and I didn't need to use any graphics driver to enjoy the effects. All I had to do was install CompizConfig Settings Manager and enable those extra effects. That was Compiz 0.9.6. Now, after installing Ubuntu 10.10, when I first logged in, the graphics were slow. When I dragged a window from one end of the screen to the other, the whole screen would blur up and pixelate and it would be very laggy. I tried going to System Preference Appearance and selecting Extra effects on the Visual effects tab, but all I got was "Desktop effects could not be enabled". I don't know whether I should install the Additional drivers (proprietary) because my Internet is slow and it would take a long time. Furthermore, in Ubuntu 11.10, after I installed the proprietary graphics driver, I immediately went into fallback mode and wasn't even offered an option to set my desktop session to Ubuntu 3D. I didn't need the driver to run Compiz in Ubuntu 11.10, it just ran so smoothly. But in Ubuntu 10.10, everything is so laggy. Should I install the ATI/AMD Proprietary FGLRX Graphics Driver for Ubuntu 10.10 to enable extra effects? Or is there something else wrong with my system? • Help me i can't format my usb? i have already tried with mkdosfs and gparted

  I have a MicroSD card in a USB adapter (which plugs into a USB port on my machine, and acts like a USB flash drive). I was using Unetbootin to make this a bootable USB flash drive with Kubuntu. But I needed to cancel while it was working. So I killed the Unetbootin process from the console. Since then, I can't format the MicroSD or delete the folder that Kubuntu made. I have also tried mkdosfs, with no success. I can't mount the drive anymore either? What can I do, to make this drive usable again? Trying to create a new partition table in GParted, as described in Eliah Kagan's answer, does not work. It fails with the error message "imposible crear tabla de particiones" ("unable to create a partition table").

But this is not a required feature. Can someone, with experience, please tell me about their experiences with bigger projects like this?   You know this problem ... take Super Mario Bros. for example. When Mario/Luigi/etc. comes in proximity with a nearing pipe image an invisible boundary setter must prevent him from continuing forward movement. However, when you jump and move both x and y you are coordinately moving in two dimensions at an exact time. When nearing the pipe in mid-air as you are falling, i.e. implementation of gravity in the computer program "pulling" the image back down, and you do not want them to get "stuck" in both falling and moving. That problem is solved, but how about this one: The player controlling the ball object is attempting to jump and move rightwards over the non-stationary block that moves up and down. How could we measure its top and lower x+y components to determine the safest way for the ball to accurately either fall back down, or catch the ledge, or get pushed down under it, etc.?

• Oneiric is freezing. Need help diagnosing and filing a bug

  Six months ago, I bought a new Sandy Bridge CPU and built myself a nice desktop machine. Until now it hasn't worked...at all. I finally have gotten it working now that Oneiric is released, but it freezes every so often, making it little more than a semi-functional temptation. What happens when the system freezes is: the music I have playing enters into about 5s loops. SSH fails the monitor freezes the mouse freezes the keyboard fails The only way to fix it is to do a hard reset...and that sucks. I'd love to at least figure out the source of the freeze so I can file a bug. I've looked in dmesg, kern.log, and the X.org logs. Nothing interesting is any of them.   Basically I'm new to network programming in Python, so I went on a tutorial online to find out about it. Using what was taught in the tutorial (creating a socket, connecting to ports, etc), I modified the code so that I made a program where two computers can send messages to one another. If I were to apply for a job and show this to my interviewers, would the code for it technically be mine? It is fair to say that I didn't modify the code by that much; However, what if for example I modified it into something like a tic-tac-toe game, where two users play each other from different PCs, would the code then be mine? I just don't want to look like a plagiarizer hence why I ask.

  I submitted a couple websites on yahoo directory a month ago. For some reason, the url they listed was not the url I asked for, they listed the Japanese version instead of the submitted English version (this is a English directory so obviously it is a mistake). I requested changes and was accepted. But the reality is they promised a change but it was never really done. I contacted them again and again through the 'request a change in URL' form, but there is no answer. Is there any effective way that I can get to them? preferably a phone number or email? • Artificial Intelligence ... how to make an object roam freely/avoid other objects, and model consciousness? [on hold]

  Say a simple free roam battle scene in which a player runs around freely and engages in battle with other enemies/objects, as shown below: The dragon/dinosaur (or whatever that thing I drew appears to be) will, by some measure, try and avoid attacks so it is modeled to appear to have a conscious desire to avoid pain. My question is ... since this is very complex, many possible strategies for solving this, algorithms, etc., what is the basic idea behind how this would be accomplished in any sort? Like, we can assume the enemy in the picture is not just going to aimlessly hop around and avoid, but freely be modeled to behave as if it were really exploring/fighting. For the best example I can give, witness the behavior of the enemies in Final Fantasy 12 in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mO0TkmhiQ6w How do the pros, or how would anyone attempt solve/implement this? PS: I have tried several times to give an image the "illusion" that is has a conciousness, but aside from emulating a real animal's consciousness in complete, I fall short and get choppy moving images that follow predictable patterns, error-prone movements, and the worst imaginable scenario of a battle engagement.
