• Web app - Biometric system connection

  Hi, I will be developing an application for a club where they will have visitors use biometric systems(finger print) or magnetic cards to mark their attendance. This application is planned as a web app, made using PHP/MySQL/Javascript. It does a lot of other things as well. What I wanted to find out is how is the interface between Biometric/Megnetic Card systems to a web app done? I've never worked on this and am hoping if someone who has experience with this can throw some light on this as to how this could be accomplished. Any pointers will be appreciated. (I'm afraid there's got to be some form of application installed on a pc that would interface with the hardware and probably makes calls to the web app. But, if there was a way to connect it to the web app directly, then the app would be easy to deploy to any location with minimal installation.) • MSBuild Starter Kits - i.e. Copy and just start modding...

  Hi guys Just wondering if anyone knows if there are any MSBuild starter kits out there. What I mean by starter kits is that from the looks of it most builds to kinda the same sort of steps with minor changes here and there (i.e. most builds would run test, coverage, zip up the results, produce a report, deploy etc). Also what most people in general want from a CI build, test build, release build is mostly the same with minor changes here and there. Now don't get me wrong i think that most scripts are fairly different in the end. But I can't help but think that most start out life being fairly similar. Hence does anyone know of any "starter kits" that have like a dev/CI/test/release build with the common tasks that most people would want that you can just start changing and modifying?   I recently found SOAPUI and discovered that it is just a great tool for testing any SOAP/HTTP service. Conventionally, we have been developing our own driver to test our services (WCF based netTCP binding) so far. But with SOAPUI experience, I am really looking for some such tool that can be used with such ease with built-in facilities for load testing, functional testing etc. The other thought in my mind is that for services that I wish to deploy with netTCP can be first tested using a HTTP binding using SOAPUI. Once found suitable, the binding can be changed for the intended one. I shall like the views from all the experts here. Thanks.

• Converting MS Word Documents to PDF in ASP.NET

  Similar questions have been asked, but nothing exactly like mine, so here goes. We have a collection of Microsoft Word documents on an ASP.NET web server with merge fields whose values are filled in as a result of user form submissions. After the field merge, the server must convert the document to PDF and stream it down to the browser. Our first inclination was to use the Visual Studio Tools for Office API; however, we ran into this warning from Microsoft: Microsoft does not currently recommend, and does not support, Automation of Microsoft Office applications from any unattended, non-interactive client application or component (including ASP, ASP.NET, DCOM, and NT Services), because Office may exhibit unstable behavior and/or deadlock when Office is run in this environment. It looks like the field manipulation can be done using the Open XML SDK, but what's the best way to convert Word 2007 documents to PDF without opening Word? The optimal solution would be low-cost, scalable, have a low memory footprint, be easy to deploy, and have a .NET API.

  I have create 2 projects, first is main project and another is content file (excel file). I have set property of these file to copy to output directory = copy always and build action = content. However when I deploy to user site using ClickOnce, it can't find these excel file. • (Newbie) Amazon Web Services Apache Server

  Hello! I am trying to get a feel for the costs imposed by running apache on AWS continually. Assuming that the service is scarcely used, does anyone know how many cpu hours that would eat up in a month just by sitting there and running? I understand that this is slightly impractical but I am trying to figure out what the cost of entry is to deploy an application on this platform (as compared to GAE). • Managing important runtime business logic with regard to a codebase

  I'm working on a project which will end up have a lot of application information stored in the form of records in a database. In this case, it's the configuration of data views: which grid columns to show/hide default filters to apply to each grid view column titles sorting subtotaling ... This information is a big part of the value of the application and is essential to it's function. The data will be altered by admins a fair amount, so it's not static and it wouldn't be appropriate to have to deploy a new version of the app every time the data changes. The question is, Where should this data be stored? It will definitely live in the database because that's how it's accessed, but I feel like it needs to also be kept with the version controlled codebase because it's an integral part of functioning of the application. Has anyone dealt with an issue like this before? What did you end up doing?

  EDIT I need to change www.myhost.com:8080/myproject-war to www.myhost.com. Here is what I've been trying: I configurate the Virtual Server: server. I have still have default Network Listeners to be http-listener-1 and http-listner-2. I change the Default Web Module to ScholarActive#ScholarActive-war.war (The only option in the drop down list, since I only deploy 1 application). For the docroot, I try this ${com.sun.aas.instanceRoot}/applications/ScholarActive/ScholarActive-war_war or this ${com.sun.aas.instanceRoot}/applications/ScholarActive/ Both does not work. What does docroot need to point to, for this to work? what I try to do is: when I type localhost:8080/ScholarActive-war, then my application load, I want to make so that if I type locahost:8080, it will load the app as well, then what left is changed the port to 80. But no luck. Any Idea?

  I'm working on setting up a production server using CentOS 5.3, Apache, and Phusion Passenger (mod_rails). I have an app that uses the Sphinx search engine and the Thinking Sphinx gem. According to the Thinking Sphinx docs... If you actually want to search against the indexed data, then you’ll need Sphinx’s searchd daemon to be running. This can be controlled using the following tasks: rake thinking_sphinx:start rake ts:start rake thinking_sphinx:stop rake ts:stop What would be the best way to ensure that this takes place in production? I can deploy my app, then manually run rake thinking_sphinx:start, but I like to set things up so that if I have to bounce the server, everything will come back up. Should I put a call to that Rake task in an initializer? Or something in rc.local?

• WCF with SSL- not finding localhost

  Hi guys, I'm trying to get WCF to use SSL with ANYTHING for FIVE DAYS now. I've gone through countless walkthroughs, generated more certificates than a mail order diploma company, even tried hot fixes. After working with MS dev tools since VB1, I am now considering flipping burgers as a career option. WCF, as far as I can see, is a complete lemon. Anyway, to get to my actual question: If I run through this walkthrough: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff648840.aspx I get to step 11 (adding the service reference) and get "There was an error downloading metadata from the address. Please verify that you have entered a valid address". Details of the error gives: There was an error downloading 'https://localhost/SSL6/Service.svc'. Unable to connect to the remote server No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:443 I'm using VS2008 on Windows 7 with IIS7. I followed the walkthrough exactly (apart from step 5 which was different on IIS7- I went into "SSL Settings" for the VD), so it shows my config (yes I've used httpsGetEnabled and mexHttpsBinding). Anyone care to save my sanity and job?

  Hello. I created several web applications that use the same static files (css, js, images). When I use svn for version control, I use an external repository (svn: externals) to add files to the current project. For example: - Project_1 ---- Webapp -------- Static (external to static's repo) - Project_2 ---- Webapp -------- Static (external to static's repo) I could easily use it in their web pages by adding a link like /static/ ... But now our company has moved to perforce. How can I support the current structure? We also use maven, I think to pack these files as a jar and use as a dependency, but then my editor (idea) does not see that this dependence are js-scripts and styles. And i need to repackage and deploy jar file when create minor changes. How to use maven correctly?

• Programatically Determining Bin Path

  I'm working on a web app called pj and there is a bin file and a src folder. The relative paths before I deploy the app will look something like: pj/bin and pj/src/pj/script.py. However, after deployment, the relative paths will look like: pj_dep/deployed/bin and pj_dep/deployed/lib/python2.6/site-packages/pj/script.py Question: Within script.py, I am trying to find the path of a file in the bin directory. This leads to 2 different behaviors in the dev and deployment environment. If I do os.path.join(os.path.dirname(__file__), 'bin') to try to get the path for the dev environment, I will have a different path for the deployment environment. Is there a more generalized way I can find the bin directory so that I do not need to rely on an if statement to determine how many directories to go up based on the current env? This doesn't seem flexible and might cause other issues later on when the code is moved.

  Hi, I'm working on a Java web project that uses Maven to build its artifacts. At the end of the Maven build we have a few jar and war files that we need to deploy onto our development/testing environment. Right now we're using a pretty hefty Ant script that performs several tasks (on both Windows/Linux machines) Starts/Stops services Copies/deletes files Builds some stuff and then executes it Etc Ant does the job well - but the script is quickly getting very large, and to be honest, it feels inadequate for the task at hand. Are there other alternatives? I've heard of gant, but I'm not sure that's the right way to go. Thanks for helping!

  We're coming from GWT projects and because of problems with SEO not liking GWT for our next project we're going to move clear of GWT (mainly because seo is a high priority for this next project). In choosing a new framework, I'm looking at Wicket and liking what I've seen so far. I've only done a few tutorials, but in looking at the war layout (from these tutorials) it looks like most of the html pages are in the WEB-INF folder. It this going to cause problems for SEO and search engines crawling through the sites files? Ideally, I'd like to use Wicket with some AJAX and deploy to Google App Engine.

  Hi All I have a simple EJB jar with a stateless session bean, deployed in JBOSS AS 4.2.2, unde r/server/default/deploy. The bean is registered under JNDI tree as viewed from jboss jmx console and I am able to access it through a remote java client outside JBOSS. Inside EJB jar, I have added some logging to be written to a separate log file, using apache log4j jar and log4j.xml. But I am not able to view any of the logs. Also I do not wish to use jboss-log4j.xml, since there will be many other EJBs to be deployed and wish to have separate log4j for each EJB application. Here is my one of the EJB-jar contents: EJB_DS.jar: log4j.xml classes apache log4j jar is added to /server/default/lib path. • Tomcat myfaces dynamic source files

  Hi, I'm going to try and make as much sense as possible here. We are working on a myfaces 2 app in tomcat. On our local dev machines, whenever we want to change one of our xhtml files, we have to stop the server, deploy and then start the server back up. This is cumbersome and makes making small changes to the view tedious. I tried changing the deployed xhtml file in tomcat, but the server only picks up the new change after a restart. Is there any type of config in myfaces or tomcat I can do to force the rebuilding of these source xhtml's every time?

I use _rptDocument.PrintToPrinter(1, false, 0, 0); to print report. I've tried two methods to deploy website Normal Publish option. Web Deployment Project. I have heard of it being used a fair bit in conjunction with Gears for offline solutions (probably nowadays HTML5 "offline storage" is all the rage) and I'd like to experiment with building a GUI in GWT and use it on my iPad. Tips/tutorials on how to deploy it onto the device to act as much as possible like a resident "App"? This is just a curiosity/experiment to fill a week-end... (I can "free" the iPad for the experiment if need be yet I am sure a lot can be done without doing so...)

• Restart nginx without sudo?

  So I want to be able to cap:deploy without having to type any passwords. I have setup all private keys so I can get to the remote servers fine, and am now using svn over ssh, so no passwords there. I have one last problem, I need to be able to restart nginx. Right now I have sudo /etc/init.d/nginx reload. That is a problem b/c it uses the capistrano password, the one I just removed b/c I am using keys. Any ideas on how to restart nginx w\out a password?
