• Kindle Screen as Informational Display (weather, unread emails, calendar)

  I'm looking to create a type of homepage for my kindle like you might expect to see upon waking up (though realistically, I plan on using it as a secondary screen throughout the day) whereupon it shows you several things dividing the screen, but not being scrollable. I just want the summary to fill the screen of the web browser. It would show the weather my gmail inbox my calendar for the day maybe some tech news However, as a starting question, how would I go about embedding my gmail inbox into the page? I would love to put m.gmail.com into an iframe restricted to a certain portion of the screen, but I know that won't likely be happening. Any ideas on how to embed an email summary or the calendar? • How can I make this script output each categories item per category [closed]

  Ok so here is the deal currently this script outputs all the products in a parent category as well as the products in the child categories. What i would like to do is seperate the output based on child categories. All the child categories are in the array $children and the string $childs. The parent category is the first array element of $children with the following ones being the actual children. The category names are stored in the database $result as " $cat_name ". I want to first Display the cat_name then the products that fall in that category and then display the next child cat_name and items, ect.   I have a website where I want to disable users from selecting content EXCEPT for input areas. I currently have some CSS to disable user-select: -webkit-user-select: none; -khtml-user-select: none; -moz-user-select: none; -o-user-select: none; user-select: none; However, this does NOT cover Internet Explorer; thus, I need to implement some JavaScript: <body onselectstart="return false;"> Through CSS and JavaScript, I can make all content unselectable across all popular browsers. BUT, this code also makes areas unselectable, which is a major case of poor usability. I use CSS to make input areas selectable: -webkit-user-select: text; -khtml-user-select: text; -moz-user-select: text; -o-user-select: text; user-select: text; .. and as you might have expected, this does not cover Internet Explorer, since I used JavaScript to disable all content from being selectable. What can I do to make all content unselectable except for input areas?

Instead, the target of the longDesc attribute is used as the tooltip if present; otherwise, the title is displayed. The alt attribute is still used as the Microsoft Active Accessibility name, and the title attribute is used as the fallback name only if alt is not present. I also found that many say title should be used. Which should I use to meet the industrial standard: alt, longdesc or title?

• Reducing load time, or making the user think the load time is less

  I've been working on a website, and we've managed to reduce the total content for a page load from 13.7MiB's to 2.4, but the page still takes forever to load. It's a joomla site (ick), and it has a lot of redundant DOM elements (2000+ for the home page), and make 60+ HttpRequest's per page load, counting all the css, js, and image requests. Unlike drupal, joomla won't merge them all on the fly, and they have to be kept separate or else the joomla components will go nuts. What can I do to improve load time? Things I've done: Added colors to dom elements that have large images as their background so the color is loaded, then the image Reduced excessively large images to much smaller file sizes Reduced DOM elements to ~2000, from ~5000 Loading CSS at the start of the page, and javascript at the end Not totally possible, joomla injects it's own javascript and css and it does it at the header, always. Minified most javascript Setup caching and gziping on server Uncached size 2.4MB, cached is ~300KB, but even with so many dom elements, the page takes a good bit of time to render. What more can I do to improve the load time?

  I'm trying to put together a basic HTML scraper for a variety of scientific journal websites, specifically trying to get the abstract or introductory paragraph. The current journal I'm working on is Nature, and the article I've been using as my sample can be seen at http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v463/n7284/abs/nature08715.html. I can't get the abstract out of that page, however. I'm searching for everything between the <p class="lead">...</p> tags, but I can't seem to figure out how to isolate them. • How to disable scrolling the document body?

  I have a HTML which has lot of content and a vertical scrollbar appears as soon as the HTML is loaded. Now from this HTML a full screen IFRAME is loaded. The problem is when the IFRAME is loaded, the parent scrollbar still persists, I want to disable the scrollbar when the Iframe is loaded. I tried: document.body.scroll = "no", it did not work with FF and chrome. document.style.overflow = "hidden"; after this I was still able to scroll, and the whole iframe would scroll up revealing the parent HTML. My requirement is, when the IFRAME is loaded, we should never be able to scroll the entire IFRAME if the parent HTML has a scrollbar. Any ideas?

• Why does Opera parse my web page as XML?

  I just tried viewing my website http://www.logmytime.de/ in Opera (version 10.50) for the first time and for some reason it gives me an "xml parsing failed error" and refuses to display the web page. I can choose to "Reparse the document as HTML" and then the page works fine, but that's hardly a solution to my problem. The weird thing is that the error still occurs after setting a HTML (instead of XTHML) doctype: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd"> I checked the source output from the browser to make sure I did not make any mistake. I even viewed the same web page in Firebug and it shows a Content-Type of text/html; . So, why does Opera still try to parse my web page as XML? Thanks, Adrian

  I'm porting some VBScript code which generates emails using the standard CDOSYS Message object. The Message oject has a property AutoGenerateTextBody which when true will cause it to automatically create the TextBody property value when you assign HTML to the HTMLBody property. Hence creating the typical text/plain and text/html alternatives in the message body. However .NET appears to be missing this function. The MailMessage object does have the ability to create alternative views but there doesn't appear to be a way to easily create the text body content from the HTML content. I'm not necessarily looking for an auto-magic option but I do need a solution to taking what is an HTML string and converting it to a reasonable plain text representation. Just dropping all the HTML markup doesn't cut it. Is there a tool buried somewhere in the existing .NET framework that can do this?

  I have bought a flash template in an online store. There are different buttons on it and some of them link to existing local html files from the pack - index-1.html, index-2.html etc. There are also some buttons that don't go anywhere right now but they are intended to be linked to some urls too. They react with animation on mouse rollover and I suppose they should go to some url if I set it somewhere on click. But there is no documentation about that in the pack. I searched through the Flash source file and all html pages files for something like "index", "geturl", also looked through them manually to realize how it could be made but with no luck. So, my question - is that possible that way or another to make that MovieClip button link to some my page, for example, "contacts.html". Thanks.

  I have a browser interface with a ul#contacts list on the left and div#contact property panel (email, phone) on the right. Click a contact in the list and my app makes an XHR request to get the contact property HTML fragment and update div#contact.innerHTML. Each contact fragment has an "Edit Contact" link. With JS, I progressively upgrade that link with an event listener that performs an XHR request to replace the static property panel with an in-place edit form. This can happen many times during a single browser session. How should I clean up my "Edit Contact" event listener? Do I need to remove it manually before the form overwrites the property panel? Or is the event listener cleaned up automatically when the contents of div#contact (and the node that I'm listening on) is overwritten? FWIW, I still consider IE6 to be part of my target market.
