  • using munin-plugins-rails to monitor rails app perfromance

    I have been trying to configure munin-plugins-rails to monitor the performance of our rails apps from Munin. The graphs appear, but no data is shown in the graphs. The log files show Error output from : 2013/06/27-15:39:06 [5540] Request-log-analyzer, by Willem van Bergen and $ 2013/06/27-15:39:06 [5540] Website: http://railsdoctors.com I have tried running Request-log-analyzer manually and pointing it at the production log file, and this reports as % for every item. There is data in the log file. I have tried changing the version of the gems installed, and also the type of the log file, but no luck. Any ideas anyone? Thanks

  • I'm asked to tune a long starting app into a short time period

    Hi, I'm asked to shorten the startup period of a long starting app, however I have also to obligate to my managers to the amount of time i will reduce the startup - something like 10-20 seconds. As i'm new in my company I said I can obligate with timeframe of months (its a big server and I'm new and i plan to do lazy load + performance tuning). that answer was not accepted I was required to do some kind of a cache to hold important data in another server and then when my server starts up it would reach all its data from that cache - I find it a kind of a workaround and i don't really like it. do you like it? what do you think I should do? any suggestions? PS when i profiled the app i saw many small issues that make the startup long (like 2 minutes) it would not be a short process to fix all and to make lazy load.   • How to implement a "hidden" Android app?

    I would like an application which is not readily apparent to casual perusal of the Android. How best to activate it and bring its screen to the fore? Can I detect a special dialing sequence, like *1234#? Or a hotkey combination? When activated, I guess I can pop up an anonymous screen which does not mention the app, but only asks for a password. If password is ok, then show the app. Any suggestions?

    Hi. I have an old box that I'd like to use as a private sever to stream movies off of. My upload speed is about 0.5/Mb/s, so I need something that compresses well. I'd like to be able to access these movies from anywhere, through the web, through some interface (maybe the divx web player? flash player? some other protocol?) Can anyone recommend anything good?     I have a GUI application which can create many similar windows on desktop. All windows have same title. I have to enumerate all dialogs with same title and make some tests against each of such dialogs. If I call: dialog = app['Window Name'] pywinauto returns a WindowSpecification object which is useful along with accessing controls by name. When I call: dialogs = app.windows_(title='Window Name') pywinauto returns me a list of HwndWrapper instances which are not so useful. How to obtain a list of windows with specified title but as WindowSpecification objects?

What I want to do is that the app will present the user with an interface where the user can get his eye scanned for authentication. The most important feature I want to incorporate is that the user need not have a webcam, the app must be able to read the eye from the display device i.e. CRT or LCD screen itself. I want info about the best framework available for this. Once successfully tested, I am planning to provide it as a webservice. Any one who will help me will get a royalty from my income.

  • Override app.config settings embedded into a MSI?

    I have a .NET solution with an installer project that generates an MSI. One of the projects installed by the MSI contains an App.Config file. It appears that the values of that config file are embedded into the MSI at compile time. Is there a way to override them at runtime? For instance, the App.Config I'm working with sets the URL of a web service that the installer talks to. Is it possible to override this URL at runtime, so that I don't have to recompile the MSI if the URL changes?

    They have asks to turn off caching on our browsers. I was aghast that they would ask such a thing. I said to them; To avoid caching it is best practice to use; <meta http-equiv="pragma" content="no-cache" /> <meta http-equiv="cache-control" content="no-cache" /> This should work across all browsers. Their reply was; We need to refresh javascript at runtime, this will not help us – any more ideas? I replied; Unsure what you mean by “refresh javascript at runtime”. If you are using ajax, browser caching can effect the XMLHttpRequest open method. Adding these meta tags to the source has fixed this for me in the past. Browser caching only caches resources, it should have no effect on site scripting. These meta tags will bypass browser caching. This is a reasonable request, isn't it?

  • handling activity destruction in multithreaded android app

    Hi, I have a multithreded app where background threads are used to load data over network or from disk/db. Every once in a while user will perform some action e.g. fetch news over network, which will spawn a background AsyncTask, but for some reason user will quit the app (press back button so that activity gets destroyed). In most such scenarios, I make appropriate checks in the background thread after it returns from n/w i/o, so that it won't crash by accessing members of the activity that is destroyed by now. However some corner cases are left where crashes happen, because the background thread would access some member of activity that is now null. Do other Android developers have some generic/recommended framework to handle such scenarios? These are the times when I wish android would have guaranteed termination of all threads when activity destroys (in the same way that regular linux process cleans up when it's quit)... but I guess Android devs had good reasons for not exposing process lifetimes through the api.

    I have very old DOS Application (CadSoft Eagle - PCB Designer) and I want to work with it on my workstation with Windows 7. Then I install Windows 98 and that software into VmWare Player. But that software has serious problem with redrawing screen. It's very slow in comparison with my Intel Celeron 333MHz with Windows 98. I have same problem if I try to use DOSBox on Windows XP (same Celeron 333MHz). I also trying run this application directly on Windows XP (same Celeron 333MHz) with compatibility mod set to "Windows 98", but I get "(0Dh): General Protection Fault". Can someone give me good advice how I solve that?

    I have a Core Data application which I plan to update with a new schema. The lightweight migration seems to work, but it takes time proportional to the amount of data in the database. This occurs in the didFinishLaunchingWithOptions phase of the app. I want to avoid <app> failed to launch in time problems, so I assume I cannot keep the migration in the didFinishLaunchingWithOptions method. I assume the best method would involve performing the migration in a background thread. I assume also that I'd need to defer loading of the main ViewController until the loading completes to avoid using the managedObjectContext until initialization completes. Does this make sense, and is there example code (maybe in Apple sample projects) of this sort of initialization?

    I have several copies/instances of my xp mode image and have a bunch of apps that were auto-published to Win7. I have since disabled the "auto-publish" apps in the instances but still have the applications listed. What is the correct/best way to clear them out. I read a post somewhere that you can just delete the shortcut in the start menu but I want to remove all links and don't know if that would suffice? Thanks TK

  • iPhone - Landscape Only App

    Hello all! I am trying to make an app that will only be viewed in Landscape. I have looked up some tutorials (albeit older ones) and have done the following: -set up the info.plist to include a key for uiinterfaceorientation -in the main view controller I have set the frame to be 480 x 320 Now, the first screen loads up ok. Everything is where it should be and whatnot. However, if I click a button that is set to present a modal view controller nothing happens. Everything is linked and coded correctly but nothing happens when I press the button. Am I doing something wrong with trying to force landscape? At it's basic, this question is a how do you effectively make an app that will only be in landscape mode? Thanks for any help.

  • sound loop breaks after some time in background music in iphone app

    I am playing sounds in loop in my app. So it should continue playing through out the app. but sometimes it stops after playing sound for 3/4 times.I don't understand whats happening. I am using audio-toolbox framework for playing sound. creating audio queue and then playing sounds in loop. I am also playing sound from ipod library using mediaplayer. Same thing happening with song from ipod. I have set [musicPlayer setRepeatMode: MPMusicRepeatModeOne]; but still it stops after 3/4 times.

  • Embeddable unit testing framework for mixed Windows app

    I want to test portions of a very complex app which includes both a major native Windows component and a substantial WPF GUI. Due to complexities I can't detail, it is impossible to run the native portion independently nor can I isolate the areas I want to test (spare me the lectures, we're talking a huge legacy code base and we do have refactoring plans). I'm looking for a unit test kit I can invoke on the native side but must be able to run with the app launched with the managed portion initialised. That seems to rule out the run executable feature of the cfix Windows unit test kit. I really like their philosophy, like WinUnit, of using DLL compilation as a way to add the reflective capabilities missing in C++ and gain a more NUnit-like experience. Ideally, I want something like WinUnit running within the application code and generating an HTML report. I'm trying to introduce more TDD and having things as lean as possible is important.

  • Fullscreen Photo/Video Slideshow App?

    I have a folder that contains a lot of subfolders which include photos and/or videos. Is there any free application that would display them in a random slideshow? It's something I want to run on a PC mounted on a wall. I point it to that folder and it starts displaying it, with some random/nice transitions. No need for anything more fancy, except maybe Previous/Next controls. Edit: Just a quick clarification. Those pictures change all the time, and there are many of them. It's supposed to be in a store to display product pictures, so it's not like someone is actively watching the whole show. Currently, there are around 150,000 pictures or videos.

    I am creating an iPad App that displays data I got from an API in JSON format. My Core Data model has several entities(Countries, Events, Talks, ...). For each entity I have one .json file that contains all instances of the entity and its attributes as well as its relationships. I would like to populate my Core Data data model with these entities before the start of the App (otherwise it takes about 15 minutes for the iPad to create all the instances of the entities from the several JSON files using factory methods).
