  When you use iTunes to sync your videos with the iPhone the videos are always saved with no more than 640 pixels wide, if I am not wrong. What about the iPad? What is the size of videos iTunes syncs with iPad? 1024x768? and what if the video has a dimension below 1024x768? Will it scale up? or will it keep the video at low res and scale when you play? The question is because I am using the MPMoviePlayerController and I need to know what resolutions to expect, so I can adjust the interface. thanks.

• jQuery Cycle plugin z-index float problem

  When I try to place an element on top of my jQuery Cycle element, it doesn't work. The element is always behind the jQuery cycle element. I use float: right; to position the element, and set its z-index to 100000, to no avail. Firebug sees the Cycle element and its children as having low z-indexes, and shows the floating element to be in the right place. • Arguments of using WCF/OData as access layer instead of EF/L2S/nHibernate directly

  We develop mostly low traffic but highly specialized web applications. Normally we use L2S, EF or nHibernate as access layer and then throws Asp.Net MVC to it and in which for normal crud operations we query the ISession/DataContext directly but for more advanced functions/side effects we put it in a some kind of service layer. Now, i was think about publishing the data through OData (WCF Data Service) and query that from the controllers (or even from jQuery when the a good template engine shows up) and publish the service operations through a WCF service (or as custom methods on the WCF Data Service?). What advantages/disadvantages does this architecture poses? Do I gain something except higher complexity and latency? Better separations of concerns (or is it just a illusion)?

• Best way to learn iphone audio queue services, step by step tutorial

  Hi Everyone, I'm trying to learn how to handle audio at a fairly low level with audio queue services. I have been progrmaing in memory managed languages for quite a while, and have just completed the c programing tutorial by vtc (2007). This has left me comfortable with the understanding of pointers and memory allocation, but the apple documention still leaves me wanting for a simpler implenation and explaination. Maybe I need to learn objective c and cocoa better. I have heard that this book is good. Cocoa(R) Programming for Mac(R) OS X (3rd Edition) Could someone suggest a learning path that is going to help me get an better understanding of working with audio and an iphone. I want to be able to play mp3 files back and also alter the pitch of them as they are playing. I am prepared that I may have to temporarily convert the mp3 files into pcm files to do things like that to them. Thanks everyone.

• Google Maps API v3: Can I setZoom after fitBounds?

  I have a set of points I want to plot on an embedded Google Map (API v3). I'd like the bounds to accommodate all points unless the zoom level is too low (i.e., zoomed out too much). My approach has been like this: var bounds = new google.maps.LatLngBounds(); // extend bounds with each point gmap.fitBounds(bounds); gmap.setZoom( Math.max(6, gmap.getZoom()) ); This doesn't work. The last line "gmap.setZoom()" doesn't change the zoom level of the map if called directly after fitBounds. Is there a way to get the zoom level of a bounds without applying it to the map? Other ideas to solve this?

• Embedded Linux or eCos ?

  One way to look at it - embedded Linux starts with desktop Linux & ditches the parts not needed for embedded systems (is this actually true?), whereas eCos is designed from the ground up for embedded systems. Now, assume an ARM processor, probably ARM 7 - does performance make a difference? Actually, we talking a very low load system, max 500 transactions a day. Any advantages of one over the other (or FreeRTOS, etc)? Stability, maturity, performance, development tools, anything else? All that I can think of is that if I am certain that I will never port to another o/s, then if I go with embedded Linux, I don't need an o/s abstraction layer to allow me to do unit testing on host (desktop Linux box). Any thoughts or comments? Thanks.

• Nhibernate equivalent of LinqToEntitiesDomainService in RIA

  Hi, When using Entity Framework with RIA domain services, domain services are inherited from LinqToEntitiesDomainService, which, I suppose, allows you to make linq queries on a low level (client-side) which propagate into ORM; meaning that all queries are performed on the database and only relevant results are retrieved to the server and thus the client. Example: var query = context.GetCustomersQuery().Where(x => x.Age > 50); Right now we have a domain service which inherits from DomainService, and retrieves data through NHibernate session as in: virtual public IQueryable<Customer> GetCustomers() { return sessionManager.Session.Linq<Customer>(); } The problem with this approach is that it's impossible to make specific queries without retrieving entire tables to the server (or client) and filtering them there. Is there a way to make linq querying work with NHibernate over RIA like it works with EF? If not, we're willing to switch to EF because of this, because performance impact would be just too severe. • SIP and Java, where to start and with what?

  I want to implement the SIP protocol in java and would want to be able to create different clients (5 or more) and make them connect to a proxy server. This is all for testing purposes so I would like to be able to see well what's happening on a rather low level. The clients should first be able to communicate trough text and later on maybe also by audio. (If I ever get that far) I already read a bit about the JAIN libraries and what I understood from that is that they are not really well suited for the server side? I also didn't really find any proxy server examples, tutorials, using JAIN. I also found this SIP Servlet Tutorial book, I used HTTP servlets in the past but should I prefer servlets or JAIN or ...? I'm quite new to SIP so I don't really know where to start or what to choose in combination with java.

• MySQL query performance - 100Mb ethernet vs 1Gb ethernet

  Hi All I've just started a new job and noticed that the analysts computers are connected to the network at 100Mbps. The queries we run against the MySQL server can easily be 500MB+ and it seems at times when the servers are under high load the DBAs kill low priority jobs as they are taking too long to run. My question is this... How much of this server time is spent executing the request, and how much time is spent returning the data to the client? Could the query speeds be improved by upgrading the network connections to 1Gbps? Thanks Rob

It is very nice framework, saves me a lot of work and let me have low level access if I need to do something special. Code Igniter is also faster then similar frameworks by order of magnitude. I came across Yii framework which claims to be even faster and easier and prettier and whatever. I never heard of it and I was wondering if someone used it in some real life project and have practical experience that he is willing to share.

  I have a couple of numerical datasets that I need to create a concept hierarchy for. For now, I have been doing this manually by observing the data (and a corresponding linechart). Based on my intuition, I created some acceptable hierarchies. This seems like a task that can be automated. Does anyone know if there is an algorithm to generate a concept hierarchy for numerical data? • jquery error() calls showing up in firebug profile

  I am working on an ASP.NET application that make a lot of jquery and javascript calls and trying to optimize the client side code as much as possible. (This web application is only designed to run on special hardware that has very low memory and processing power.) The profiler in firebug is great for figuring out what calls are taking up the most time. I have already optimized a lot of my selectors and it is much faster. However the profile shows a lot of jquery error() calls. In the attached image of the firebug profile window you can see it was called 52 times, accounting for 15.4 of the processing time. Is that normal for jquery to call its error() like that? My code works flawlessy, and there are no error messages in the firefox error console. It seems like that is a significant performance hit. Is there anyway to get more info on what the errors are? Thanks.

• Serial Mac OS X constantly freezes/locks/dissappears for USB to Arduino

  I have a problem with my C++ code running in Xcode with both the AMSerial library as well as the generic C (ioctl, termios). After a fresh restart, my application works well but after I "kill" the program the Serial (I think) is not released. I have checked my open files under /dev and have killed the connection to serial USB from there, but my C++ still can't open the USB port. I have narrowed this down to being a low level Mac OS X issue, regarding blocking the port indefinitely, regardless of closing it using the aforementioned libraries. Just for context, I'm trying to send numbers through my USB port, serially to an Arduino Duemilanove at 9600 baud. Running Serial Monitor in Arduino is perfectly fine, however, running through a C++ application it freezes up my computer, occasionally, my mouse/keyboard freeze up: requiring a hard reset. How can this problem be fixed? It seems like Mac OS X is not USB friendly!

• Elisp performance on Windows and Linux

  I have the following dead simple elisp functions; the first removes the fill breaks from the current paragraph, and the second loops through the current document applying the first to each paragraph in turn, in effect removing all single line-breaks from the document. It runs fast on my low-spec Puppy Linux box using emacs 22.3 (10 seconds for 600 pages of Thomas Aquinas), but when I go to a powerful Windows XP machine with emacs 21.3, it takes almost an hour to do the same document. • Are there any FreeRTOS interpreted language libraries available?

  I work for a company that created firmware for several device using FreeRTOS. Lately our request for new features has surpassed how much work our firmware engineers are capable of, but we can't afford to hire anyone new right now either. Making even tiny changes requires firmware people to go in and modify things at a very low level. I've been looking for some sort of interpreted language project for FreeRTOS that would let us implement new features at a higher level. Ideally I would like to get things eventually so the devices become closer to generic computers with us writing drivers, rather than us having to implement every feature ourselves. Are there any FreeRTOS projects that interpret java, python or similar bytecode? I've looked on google, but since I'm not a firmware engineer myself I'm not sure if I'm looking for the right keywords. Thanks everyone

• Can Castle Monorail and ASP.NET MVC coexist in the same project?

  I have a large Monorail project that we have decided we are going to move over to ASP.NET MVC. Most of the underlying system will likely be reusable, but the Controllers will of course have to be rewritten, and proabably at least some of the views. It strikes me that a low risk avenue for this is gradually convert well defined sections of the system to MVC, and perhaps as MVCContrib Portable Areas. • ORA-22835 using JPA (Buffer too small)

  I am trying to persist an Entity with a @Lob annotated String field. The content of that fiels if bigger than the 40k buffer size limit. The first problem I had was related to the setString method used internally by the JPA implementation (Hibernate in my case) and the Oracle JDBC Driver. This problem was solved adding <property name="hibernate.connection.SetBigStringTryClob" value="true"/> to my persistence.xml file. Then, the error changed to a ORA-22835 error (the buffer is too small). ¿Is there any way that JPA solves this problem without going to a low-level implementation? ¿Any suggestions?

  Hello: I have a 4x4 matrix which I wish to decompose into 4 frequency bands (LL, HL, LH, HH where L=low, H=high) by using a one-level Daubechies-4 wavelet transform. As a result of the transform, each band should contain 2x2 coefficients. How can I do this in MATLAB? I know that MATLAB has dbaux and dbwavf functions.   Hi all, I'm using NSURLConnection for downloading some images in my app currently. Before implementing via this, I implemented it by NSData(dataWithContentOfURL) in NSThread. But I wanted to cancel during downloading images, So I changed it to NSURLConnection. But It happens other problem. Performance was very low after changing. For example, There is at least 5seconds for downloading images at NSThread(NSData async) But, There is more than 2 or 3 times than it at NSURLConnection(async) !! Can I enhance performance ?? How??   Let's suppose, for an example, that I want to partly clone Gmail's interface with jQuery Ajax and implement periodic auto-saving as well as sending. And in particular, let us suppose that I care about error handling, expecting network and other errors, and instead of just being optimistic I want sensible handling of different errors. If I use the "low-level" feature of $.ajax() then it's clear how to specify an error callback, but the convenience methods of $.get(), $.post(), and .load() do not allow an error callback to be specified. What are the best practices for pessimistic error handling? Is it by registering a .ajaxError() with certain wrapped sets, or an introspection-style global error handler in $.ajaxSetup()? What would the relevant portions of code look like to initiate an autosave so that a "could not autosave" type warning is displayed if an attempted autosave fails, and perhaps a message that is customized to the type of error?
