  • Excel - Variable number of leading zeros in variable length numbers?

    The format of our member numbers has changed several times over the years, such that 00008, 9538, 746, 0746, 00746, 100125, and various other permutations are valid, unique and need to be retained. Exporting from our database into the custom Excel template needed for a mass update strips the leading zeros, such that 00746 and 0746 are all truncated to 746. Inserting the apostrophe trick, or formatting as text, does not work in our case, since the data seems to be already altered by the time we open it in Excel. Formatting as zip won't work since we have valid numbers less than five digits in length that cannot have zeros added to them. And I am not having any luck with "custom" formatting as that seems to require either adding the same number of leading zeros to a number, or adding enough zeros to every number to make them all the same length. Any clues? I wish there was some way to set Excel to just take what it's given and leave it alone, but that does not seem to be the case! I would appreciate any suggestions or advice.   • Why wont extern link to a static variable?

    Why does extern int n not compile when n is declared (in a different file) static int n, but works when declared int n? (Both of these declarations were at file scope.) Basically, why is int n in file scope not the same as static int n in the same scope? Is it only in relation to extern? If so, what about extern am I missing?

  • Sending a variable from a processing page back to the original PHP page

    So on a PHP page (page 1) I have some HTML, including : <form action="create_subject.php" method="post" > Which goes to a processing page (page 2) containing MySQL which will be executed if there aren't any errors. If there are (checked by validation on the processing page (page 2)) or aren't, certain variables are set, including this one for if it's successful : if (mysql_affected_rows() == 1){ $success = 1; redirect_to("new_subject.php"); } However, how would I include $success into the URL without putting it in as : redirect_to("new_subject.php?success=1"); I can't do this as I need to do if statements, and it's only PHP on "page 2" so I can't do an if statement inside redirect_to("new_subject.php"); I know I could do ... } else { redirect_to("new_subject.php?success=1"); } But this would seem mundane and non-semantic especially as I have several variables to proccess.

At the end of each record I need to clear my string variables but I read that someString = @"" actually just points to a new string & causes a memory leak. What is the best way to handle this? Should I rather use mutable string vars and use setString:@"" between iterations?

When a client uses this library and makes a new linked list, he would have the following declaration: list myList; So typing llist just before the opening brace is practically useless, right?     I have two files: index.php /lib/user.php Index contains the form: <div class="<? echo $msgclass; ?>"> <? echo $msg; ?> </div> <form id="signin" action="/lib/user.php" method="post"> ... </form> User.php makes all the processing. It sets $msg to 'some error message' and $msgalert to 'error' in case of any error. At the end of processing it uses header() to redirect to index.php But after redirection $msg and $msgalert no longer persist and index only gets empty vars. How can i fix this?

  • android use local service to refresh map UI

    I don't need a strict code related answer I just need somebody to tell me what I am missing. My application has to retrieve from a web service (xmlrpc) the positions of some users I know and update their position on a MapView. So I decided to use a Service and an Activity extending MapActivity to show results. I thought about two solutions: I ) start the service and make it ask every minute for these positions and send them to the activity as a bundle via intent. (This didn't work out well, since once shown I couldn't find a method to let the activity continue refresh itself until she stop receiving intents+data from the service) II ) Incorporate a thread within the activity which starts the service via context.startService(...) every minute. And the MapUI refresh itself once the service send back an intent and stop itself. (Maybe I will fall in the same problem category as before I haven't tryied yet). I am also giving directions (via maps.google ws) in this way I'd like to refresh only users positions on the map and save the route. What Am I missing do you have any suggestions? related to activities/services internal mechanics, don't know launch modes, use broadcast receivers or intent filters? Thanks in advance

I guess it will depend on the length of the string. So how much space a string takes of how much length?

    If I have an object instance and I know it is actually a boxed integer, then I can simply cast it back to int like this: object o = GetSomethingByName("foo"); int i = (int)o; However, I don't actually know that the value is an integer. I only know that it can be assigned to an integer. For example, it could be a byte, and the above code would throw InvalidCastException in that case. Instead I would have to do this: object o = GetSomethingByName("foo"); int i = (int)(byte)o; The value could also be a short, or something else which can be assigned to an int. How do I generalize my code to handle all those cases (without handling each possibility separately)?

    Hi, I have a problem with parsing a string, which consists only of directory path. For ex. My input string is Abc\Program Files\sample\ My output should be Abc//Program Files//sample The script should work for input path of any length i.e., it can contain any no. of subdirectories. (For ex., abc\temp\sample\folder\joe) I have looked for help in many links but to no avail. Looks like FOR command extracts only one whole line or a string (when we use ‘token’ keyword in FOR syntax) but my problem is that I am not aware of the input path length and hence, the no. of tokens. My idea was to use \ as a delimiter and then extract each word before and after it (), and put the words to an output file along with // till we reach the end of the string. I tried implementing the following but it did not work: @echo off FOR /F "delims=\" %%x in (orig.txt) do ( IF NOT %%x == "" echo.%%x//output.txt ) The file orig.txt contains only one line i.e, Abc\Program Files\sample\ The output that I get contains only: Abc// The above output contains blank spaces as well after ‘Abc//’ My desired output should be: Abc//program Files//sample// Can anyone please help me with this?     Hi, This is the output of my 'git log'. But when I do a 'git pull' , the top commit causes conflict. So I did a 'git rebase -abort' commit 7826b25db424b95bae9105027edb7dcbf94d6e65 commit 5d1970105e8fd2c7b30c232661b93f1bcd00bc96 But my question is Can I 'save' my commit to a patch and then do a git pull? Just like I want to emulate * I did not do a git commit, but I did a 'git stash' instead * Do a git pull so that I should not get any merge error So I need to somehow 'turn back the clock'. Is that possible in git?

    I want to organize my c++ variables and functions in the following way: function prototypes in a header file "stuff.h", function implementation in "stuff.cpp", then say #include "stuff.h" in main.cpp (so I can call functions implemented in stuff.cpp). So far so good. Now I want to declare some variables in stuff.cpp that have global scope (so I can modify the variables in functions implemented in stuff.cpp and main.cpp). This doesn't seem to work. How can I do this?
