• Is it unprofessional to leave game resources to the open eye?

- by ThePlan
I'm still having problems packing my resources, after going through complicated APIs and basically just zip files which are exhausting my brain, I thought I could also pack the game with the resources visible to the human eye, in a simple folder. Would that be unprofessional? Personally, I've never even seen games do that, it would basically mean that the player could just edit whatever he wants in the game, like go in map1.txt and add an X somewhere to create a wall, or change the player sprite to a pony in MS PAINT.

• Speaker Prep Tip: Use the AV Studio Built into that Laptop

- by merrillaldrich
Over at erinstellato.com there is a great post this week about tips for new presenters. Ms. Stellato suggests, insightfully, that we record ourselves, which is really a fantastic piece of advice. What’s extra-cool is that today you don’t need any special equipment or expensive software to do just that. This week I “filmed” two run-throughs of my talk for SQL Saturday tomorrow. For me, the timing is the hardest thing – figuring out how much content I can really present in the time allowed without...(read more)

• Switching rows and columns in SQL

When they use SQL Server, one the commoner questions that Ms Access programmers ask is 'Where's the TRANSFORM/PIVOT command? So how do you swap colums and rows in an aggregate table? Do you really need to use a CLR routine for this?

Why my computer runs too slow when I install Ubuntu or any other Linux (Debian works better than other distros), but with windows works fine...? I have ubuntu 13.04 dual booting wit MS windows. It is a 32 bit version but the pc is a 64 bit. When I use the 64 bit install DVD it sees the two main partitions and gives several options but I can't find how to replace the ubuntu 32 with the 64 version without chopping the hard drive into little pieces or formatting the whole drive . I don't want to to do this and don't recognise any of the partitions shown when I go to the "do something else" menu.

• SQL Azure Federation – Partitioning

- by simonsabin
There has been so much news coming out of MS lately and one that does seem to have gone by with very little noise is Federation in SQL Azure http://player.microsoftpdc.com/Session/591d586f-3732-4bff-8ee2-857f27d74df4 This is a fascinating feature that enables you to spread a database across multiple nodes. Sharding is another term for this and is one of the main reasons people like the NOSQL movement. It will be fascinating to see whether this federation will start to appear in the main SQL Server...(read more)

• Using the Windows Explorer Context Menu to reset Umbraco Directory Permissions

- by Vizioz Limited
Hi All,As Umbraco matures I am assuming that needing to reset directory permissions might well become a thing of the past, but at the moment it is still something when I copy sites between machines that I often find myself doing. As it's 4:30am I thought, there must be a better way than having to open up a DOS prompt, navigate to a directory and then run a batch file passing in the IIS root folder location.Well.. there is :)I googled for adding a command to the context menu within Windows Explorer, I found a way of doing this for XP, but it seems the functionality was removed from Windows 7, however I found a very neat freeware application called File Menu Tools which does work perfectly!I have now added a command to my context menu that enables me to right click an IIS site root folder and then call my batch script and automatically pass in the directory. This will save me a bunch of time :)

• Comunidades de prática

- by fernando.galdino

• How Microsoft Lost the API War - by Joel Spolsky

- by TechTwaddle
Came across another gem of an article by Joel Spolsky. It's a pretty old article written in June of 2004, has lot of tidbits and I really enjoyed reading it, so much in fact that I read it twice! So hit the link below and give it a read if you haven't already, How Microsoft Lost the API War - Joel Spolsky excerpt, "I first heard about this from one of the developers of the hit game SimCity, who told me that there was a critical bug in his application: it used memory right after freeing it, a major no-no that happened to work OK on DOS but would not work under Windows where memory that is freed is likely to be snatched up by another running application right away. The testers on the Windows team were going through various popular applications, testing them to make sure they worked OK, but SimCity kept crashing. They reported this to the Windows developers, who disassembled SimCity, stepped through it in a debugger, found the bug, and added special code that checked if SimCity was running, and if it did, ran the memory allocator in a special mode in which you could still use memory after freeing it."
