• Process Is The New App by Leon Smiers

  Process-on-the-Fly #2 - Process is the New App The next generation of business process management and business rules management tools is so powerful that it actually can be seen as the successor to custom-built applications. Being able to define detailed process, flows, decision trees and business helps on both the business and IT side to create powerful, differentiating solutions that would have required extensive custom coding in the past. Now much of the definition can be done ‘on the fly,’ using visual models and (semi) natural language in the nearest proximity to the business. Over the years, ERP systems have been customized to enter organization-specific functionality into the ERP application. This leads to better support for the business, but at the same time involves higher costs for maintenance, high dependency on the personnel involved in this customization, long timelines to deliver change to the system and increased risk involved in upgrading the ERP system. However, the best of both worlds can be created by bringing back the functionality to out-of-the-box usage of the ERP system and at the same time introducing change and flexibility by means of externalized 'Process Apps' in direct connection with the ERP system. The ERP system (or legacy bespoke system, for that matter) is used as originally intended and designed, resulting in more predictable behavior of the system related to usage and performance, and clearly can be maintained in a more standardized and cost-effective way. The Prrocess App externalizes the needed functionality into a highly customizable application outside the ERP for which it is supported by rules engines, task inboxes and can be delivered to different channels. The reasons for needing Process Apps may include the following: The ERP system just doesn't deliver this functionality in a specific industry; the volatility of changing certain functionality is high; or an umbrella type of functionality across (ERP) silos is needed. An example of bringing all this together is around the hiring process for a new employee at a university. Oracle PeopleSoft HCM could be used as the HR system to store all employee details. In the hiring process, an authorization scheme is involved for getting the approval to create a contract for the employee-to-be. In the university world, this authorization scheme is complex and involves faculties/colleges (with different organizational structures) and cross-faculty organizational structures. Including such an authorization scheme into PeopleSoft would require a lot of customization. By adding a handle inside PeopleSoft towards an externalized authorization Process App, the execution of the authorization of the employee is done outside the ERP: in a tool that is aimed to deliver approval schemes via a worklist-type of application. The Process App here works as an add-on to the PeopleSoft system, but can also be extended to support the full lifecycle of the end-to-end hiring process with the possibility to involve multiple applications. The actual core functionality is kept in the supporting ERP systems, while at the same time the Process App acts as an umbrella function to control the end-to-end flow and give insight into the efficiency of the end-to-end process.   The Growing Importance of Network Virtualization We often focus on server virtualization when we discuss cloud computing, but just as often we neglect to consider some of the critical implications of that technology. The ability to create virtual environments (or VEs [1]) means that we can create, destroy, activate and deactivate, and more importantly, MOVE them around within the cloud infrastructure. This elasticity and mobility has profound implications for how network services are defined, managed, and used to provide cloud services. It's not just servers that benefit from virtualization, it's the network as well. Network virtualization is becoming a hot topic, and not just for discussion but for companies like Oracle and others who have recently acquired net virtualization companies [2,3]. But even before this topic became so prominent, Solaris engineers were working on technologies in Solaris 11 to virtualize network services, known as Project Crossbow [4]. And why is network virtualization so important? Because old assumptions about network devices, topology, and management must be re-examined in light of the self-service, elasticity, and resource sharing requirements of cloud computing infrastructures. Static, hierarchical network designs, and inter-system traffic flows, need to be reconsidered and quite likely re-architected to take advantage of new features like virtual NICs and switches, bandwidth control, load balancing, and traffic isolation. For example, traditional multi-tier Web services (Web server, App server, DB server) that share net traffic over Ethernet wires can now be virtualized and hosted on shared-resource systems that communicate within a larger server at system bus speeds, increasing performance and reducing wired network traffic. And virtualized traffic flows can be monitored and adjusted as needed to optimize network performance for dynamically changing cloud workloads. Additionally, as VEs come and go and move around in the cloud, static network configuration methods cannot easily accommodate the routing and addressing flexibility that VE mobility implies; virtualizing the network itself is a requirement. Oracle Solaris 11 [5] includes key network virtualization technologies needed to implement cloud computing infrastructures. It includes features for the creation and management of virtual NICs and switches, and for the allocation and control of the traffic flows among VEs [6]. Additionally it allows for both sharing and dedication of hardware components to network tasks, such as allocating specific CPUs and vNICs to VEs, and even protocol-specific management of traffic. So, have a look at your current network topology and management practices in view of evolving cloud computing technologies. And don't simply duplicate the physical architecture of servers and connections in a virtualized environment…rethink the traffic flows among VEs and how they can be optimized using Oracle Solaris 11 and other Oracle products and services. [1] I use the term "virtual environment" or VE here instead of the more commonly used "virtual machine" or VM, because not all virtualized operating system environments are full OS kernels under the control of a hypervisor…in other words, not all VEs are VMs. In particular, VEs include Oracle Solaris zones, as well as SPARC VMs (previously called LDoms), and x86-based Solaris and Linux VMs running under hypervisors such as OEL, Xen, KVM, or VMware.   Hi I'm trying to get an external swf to load when the flv content of another external swf finishes playing. I've only been using actiosncript 3 for about a week and I've got to this point from tutorials, so my knowledge is limited. I tried to use region.PropertyChanged event but it doesn't fire. I can do it in the code where I add new view, but that will scatter my code. How to achieve this? Thanks for reply.

• event listeners on plugin in document.onload events in opera

  I am trying to understand an issue where event-listener registration on plugins doesn't work in Opera unless i delay them. In particular, this doesn't work: document.onload = function() { plugin.addEventListener("foo", function() { alert('onFoo'); }, false); } while delaying the addEventListener() call somewhat through e.g. an alert() does: document.onload = function() { alert('onload()'); plugin.addEventListener("foo", function() { alert('onFoo'); }, false); } It seems that plugins are only loaded after document.onload. As a non-web-developer, am i missing something simple here? Or is this a known Opera problem with a common work-around?

• How to disable Events for a while in Javascript or jQuery

  Hello, I am wondering if you guys know different approach to disable an event for a while. Let me elaborate this more : Lets say I have a div or button which has a subscriber to its onclick event. To prevent the double click when the the methods are doing some ajax things, these are the some of the ways we can do : Disable the button till the method finishes its job Unbind till the methods finishes its job and then bind it again. Use some kind of flagging system like boolean so it will prevent method from working more than once. So is there any other ways, maybe some javascript tricks or jQuery tricks which is more efficient and better practice. Thanks in advance.

• Dojo: dojo onblur events

  Hi guys, I have a form setup with dojo 1.5. I am using a dijit.form.ComboBox and a dijit.form.TextBox The Combobox has values like "car","bike","motorcycle" and the textbox is meant to be an adjective to the Combobox. So it doesn't matter what is in the Combobox but if the ComboBox does have a value then something MUST be filled in the TextBox. Optionally, if nothing is in the ComboBox, then nothing can be in the TextBox and that is just fine. In fact if something isn't in the Combobox then nothing MUST be in the text box. In regular coding I would just use an onBlur event on the text box to go to a function that checks to see if the ComboBox has a value. I see in dojo that this doesn't work... Code example is below... Vehicle: <input dojoType="dijit.form.ComboBox" store="xvarStore" value="" searchAttr="name" name="vehicle_1" id="vehicle_1" /> Descriptor: <input type="text" dojoType="dijit.form.TextBox" value="" class=lighttext style="width:350px;height:19px" id="filter_value_1" name="filter_value_1" /> My initial attempt was to add an onBlur within the Descriptor's <input> tag but discovered that that doesn't work. How does Dojo handle this? Is it via a dojo.connect parameter? Even though in the example above the combobox has an id of "vehicle_1" and the text box has an id of "filter_value_1", there can be numerous comboboxes and textboxes numbering sequentially upward. (vehicle_2, vehicle_3, etc) Any advice or links to resources would be greatly appreciated. Janie

• calling and killing a parent function with onmouseover and onmouseout events

  I want to call the function upon the onmouseover="ParentFunction();" then kill it onmouseout="killParent();". Note: in my code the parent function is called initiate(); and the killer function is called reset(); which lies outside the parent function at the bottom of the script.   Hi folks, Just a simple question, for the jquery event. Are the .load(), .ready() and .unload() run in order when the DOM is loaded? The answer seems yes when I see the jQuery Documentation. <script type="text/javascript"> $(window).load(function () { // run code initializeCode(); }); $(document).ready(function() { //run code that MUST be after initialize }); $(window).unload(function() { Cleanup(); }); </script> However, the code inside the .ready() is execute before the initializeCode(); is execute, so I feel really strange. And now I have to place my code inside the .onload() method and just after the initializeCode(); line, which means to be inside the .ready() block.   Hello I have an ASP:Repeater Which I would like to display a list of check boxes in. These check boxes are related to a list of user preferences and the users resulting answer. See Code Bellow. I would like to add do one of the following if possible Option 1: It would be great if I could use the Event in the Repeater:OnItemCommand(...) to fire if any of the items change. It would seem to me that this event will only fire if there is a Button | LinkButton | ImageButton item in the list. IE it will not fire if I put in a check box with AutopostBack="True" Option 2: Is there a way I could attach a method to an Event of CheckBox:CheckChanged I would need to pass this method a parameter saying which question/answer combo to change. Option 3: Its your answer if you know an easier way that would be awesome. • this.select() and javascript events on forms

  I have a form box that I want to be always selected. I was able to get it to select everything in the box when it is clicked (using onFocus="this.select()") but I want it to be selected 100% of the time. The text in the box will be always changing, so I tried using onChange="this.select()" but that didn't work. Here's what I have: <form> <input type="text" id="txt1" size="30" maxlength="1" onkeyup="showHint(this.value)" onFocus="this.select()" onBlur="this.select()" onChange="this.select()" value="Click here, then press a key"/> </form> Basically I just tried to call everything in hopes that something would work, but it is still acting as if only onFocus="this.select()" is there. By the way, this is for controlling something via keyboard, which is why the maxlength is only 1. I want it to be always selected so that when new key are pressed, the last command will be changed without having to use backspace.

  The fundamental question is how do I create a unit test that needs to call a method, wait for an event to happen on the tested class and then call another method (the one that we actually want to test)? Here's the scenario if you have time to read further: I'm developing an application that has to control a piece of hardware. In order to avoid dependency from hardware availability, when I create my object I specify that we are running in test mode. When that happens, the class that is being tested creates the appropriate driver hierarchy (in this case a thin mock layer of hardware drivers).
