• Querying current number of touches on screen without using events on iPhone

  I have an application that starts playing a sound when user touches the uiview and changing to different tones as the user slides the finger on the screen. The sound stops when the user lifts the finger. I am using the touchesBegan, Moved and Ended Events for this. My problem is touches Ended (and/or cancelled) is sometimes not fired properly and the sound keeps playing even after the finger is lifted from screen. So as a workaround I would like to implement a timer that would check for the number of touches on the screen and if it is zero it will check and stop the audioplayer if playing. I have been searching for some code that could get me the number of touches like UITouch *touches=[self getAllTouchesonScreen]; or something :)

• Python: Plot some data (matplotlib) without GIL

  Hello all, my problem is the GIL of course. While I'm analysing data it would be nice to present some plots in between (so it's not too boring waiting for results) But the GIL prevents this (and this is bringing me to the point of asking myself if Python was such a good idea in the first place). I can only display the plot, wait till the user closes it and commence calculations after that. A waste of time obviously. I already tried the subprocess and multiprocessing modules but can't seem to get them to work. Any thoughts on this one? Thanks

• How to associate static entity instances in a Session without database retrieval

  I have a simple Result class that used to be an Enum but has evolved into being its own class with its own table. public class Result { public static readonly Result Passed = new Result(StatusType.Passed) { Id = [Predefined] }; public static readonly Result NotRun = new Result(StatusType.NotRun) { Id = [Predefined] }; public static readonly Result Running = new Result(StatusType.Running) { Id = [Predefined] }; } Each of these predefined values has a row in the database at their predefined Guid Id. There is then a failed result that has an instance per failure: public class FailedResult : Result { public FailedResult(string description) : base(StatusType.Failed) { . . . } } I then have an entity that has a Result: public class Task { public Result Result { get; set; } } When I save a Task, if the Result is a predefined one, I want NHibernate to know that it doesn't need to save that to the database, nor does it need to fetch it from the database; I just want it to save by Id. The way I get around this is when I am setting up the session, I call a method to load the static entities: protected override void OnSessionOpened(ISession session) { LockStaticResults(session, Result.Passed, Result.NotRun, Result.Running); } private static void LockStaticResults(ISession session, params Result[] results) { foreach (var result in results) { session.Load(result, result.Id); } } The problem with the session.Load method call is it appears to be fetching to the database (something I don't want to do). How could I make this so it does not fetch the database, but trusts that my static (immutable) Result instances are both up to date and a part of the session?

• CSS Width Greater then Page Width without Horizontal Scroll (overflow:hidden not an option)

  I've got a basic layout going in 960.gs. One line of text is absolutely positioned, starting within an inner DIV and exiting only the right side of the page. Here's a screenshot: The issue is that as the text appears as a series of unbroken words, if the width of the text box doesn't extend beyond the end of the page, it breaks some distance from the edge. overflow: hidden; doesn't do the trick because I need to set the width wider than the page. float won't work because the text can't escape the width of the inner DIV. I can't set it outside the inner DIV and just position it there as the same problem will still exist. The code is basically as simple as: <wrapper (containing) DIV> <text stripe DIV> <p></p> </text stripe DIV> </ wrapper DIV> I know I've done something like this before and I can't for the life of me remember what I ended up doing.   Im trying to eliminate two tables from my database. The tables are message_sort_options and per_page_options. These tables basically just have 5 records which are options a user can set as their preference in a preferences table. The preferences table has columns like sort_preferences and per_page_preference which both point to a record in the other two tables containing the options. How can i set up the models with virtual attributes and fixed values for the options - eliminating table lookups every time the preferences are looked up?

  Hi, I am working on a REST based interface where people get a json file. The client needs to access the file from another Domain. I use jsonp which works so far. My problem is the rendering in Grails. At the moment I use the 'as JSON' to marshalling the object: render "${params.jsoncallback}(${user as JSON})" The Json file getting to the client inclused all attributes, incluing the id and class, which I do not want to have in there. In case it is not jsonp, I do it this way, which works great: render(contentType:'text/json'){ userName user.userName userImage user.userImage : : } So how do I get the id and class attributes out of the json when rendering "user as JSON"? The problem is, that I've to rewrite the whole archive if a single file is added. I could get rid of the gzip compression, but adding a file would still be expensive. What other archive format would you suggest that allows fast append operations?

  I need to be able to display popup menu when I press an openGL object. I was able to accomplish this by triggering the performClick: of an inviible NSPopupButton and also by triggering the performClickWithFrame:inView: of an NSPopupButtonCell. Both of these methods were successful on OSX but I also need to target the PC and unfortunately performClickWithFrame:inView: is unimplemented in cocotron and performClick does not cause the menu to be displayed when executed on an NSPopupButton (on cocotron). Now there must be someway for this to work because the NSPopupButton does sucesfully display the NSPopupButtonCell when it is clicked but I know it does not accomplish by calling performClick:. Can I access these lower levels methods used by the NSPopupButton to display my menu or force the invisible NSPopupButton to display its menu? If so can anyone link me to some info about this?

I'd like it to be random so that it obfuscates the number of items being tracked and short, so that it's easy to reference manually; UUIDs are way too long. I'd like to avoid hitting persistent storage merely for performance reasons, but I can't think of any other way to avoid collisions. Is 9 digits enough to do something time-based?

I am using the jai_imageio TIFF reader and writer to do that and it works well as long as the product _width * height_ of the image fits in an integer. • MySQL Create tables without commiting current transaction

  I'd like my program to be able to install plugins, and rollback all the changes made if an error occurs. So I create a transaction that keeps all the things that were added while installing the plugin. The problem is that the plugin may want to create tables, and doing so automatically commits the current transaction in MySQL. See Statements That Cause an Implicit Commit on MySQL web site. Any idea on how I could do it? I thought of using temporary tables as they are not automatically commited, unless they are using too much memory, but it looks like temporary tables cannot be rolled back anyway (and I haven't found a way to convert them to permanent tables). I just found out about "save points" (http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/savepoint.html), but I don't really understand how/when it should be used nor if it can help me achieve what I want.

  I want to redefine the emacs keyboard shortcut control-i to be "MOVE CURSOR UP" To do this, I added the following line to my .emacs file: (global-set-key (kbd "C-i") 'previous-line) What I then discovered is that the tab key, by default, does whatever is bound to control-i, which is obviously not what I want. So, to restore normal tab behavior, I added this to my .emacs file (global-set-key (kbd "<tab>") 'indent-for-tab-command) This mostly works. BUT, tab no longer works for auto-completing commands in the mini buffer. How can I fix that? Or is there a better way of going about this? Thanks.

  Hi there, I have a Django-project which was running fine, until I made "some changes" I don't remember exactly. Since that point, on every request, my project crashes silently: $ ./manage.py runserver -v2 Validating models... 0 errors found Django version 1.1.1, using settings 'src.settings' Development server is running at http://127.0.0.1:8000/ Quit the server with CONTROL-C. After I requested a page (admin oder frontend), it returns to the prompt. I did not find any other option to get verbose output than -v2 - is there any logfile I can use? I'm using Django 1.1.1 on a Mac OS X 10.6 with virtualenv, Python 2.6 Thanks a lot.

I understand when I install ruby gems I must use the command sudo gem install but if I omit sudo, problems may occur. Where are gems installed within the file system when I omit sudo? How can I delete these gems? A Fun side question: When I enter cd ~/.gem my terminal is directed to .gem user$, When I enter cd ~/ and list folders using the ls command I can't find a .gem folder. Where is the .gem folder? How does this fit into the Filesystem?

  I'm starting to learn SQL and I'm working on this exercise: I have a "books" table which holds the info on every book (including price and genre ID). I need to get the name of the genre which has the highest average price. I suppose that I first need to group the prices by genre and then retrieve the name of the highest.. I know that I can get the results GENRE VS COST with the following: select b.genre, round(avg(b.price),2) as cost from books b group by b.genre; My question is, to get the genre with the highest AVG price from that result, do I have to make: select aux.genre from ( select b.genre, round(avg(b.price),2) as cost from books b group by b.genre ) aux where aux.cost = (select max(aux.cost) from ( select b.genre, round(avg(b.price),2) as cost from books l group by b.genre ) aux); Is it bad practice or isn't there another way? I get the correct result but I'm not confortable with creating two times the same selection. I'm not using PL SQL so I can't use variables or anything like that.. Any help will be appreciated.
