• Minimizing the number of boxes that cover a given set of intervals

  Hi, this is a question for the algorithms gurus out there :-) Let S be a set of intervals of the natural numbers that might overlap and b a box size. Assume that for each interval, the range is strictly less than b. I want to find the minimum set of intervals of size b (let's call it M) so all the intervals in S are contained in the intervals of M. Trivial example: S = {[1..4], [2..7], [3..5], [8..15], [9..13]} b = 10 M = {[1..10], [8..18]} // so ([1..4], [2..7], [3..5]) are inside [1..10] and ([8..15], [9..13]) are inside [8..18] I think a greedy algorithm might not work always, so if anybody knows of a solution of this problem (or a similar one that can be converted into), that would be great. • jqtransform and collapsed DIV

  Hello, I am using a jQuery plugin called: jqtransform This plugin uses JavaScript to apply CSS styles to form elements. The problem that I have consists in the following scenario: I’m building a search page, with a advanced search option. When the page loads, the div called “advancedSearch” is hidden, and it will only show if the user clicks a element. Inside the div#advancedSearch I have several form elements. However, if I hide the div#advancedSearch with the CSS style: “diplay:none;”, the jqtransform plugin doesn’t work correctly with the elements that are hidden. So my solution was to hide the div#advancedsearch with JavaScript. This actually works, and it does not matter if it’s done after the document is ready or not. But… with the JavaScript solution, the div#advancedSearch stays visible for a couple of milliseconds… which is visually annoying. So I was wondering if the solution to this problem would be in the CSS, or in correcting the jqtransform plugin, or even in finding a way to immediately hide the div#advancedSearch with JS making it immediately hidden. UPDATE 1 After jeerose comment I decided to place here my function (please note that the <%= % are ASP.Net tags, that I use to get the images path) $('.toggleAdvancedSearch').click(function() { $('#advancedSearchWrap').slideToggle(250); $('form.jqtransform').jqTransform({ imgPath: '<%= ResolveClientUrl("~/masterpages/img/jqtransform/") %>' }); return false; }); UPDATE 2 To test the problem, I did the following: Added another element to the page, with the ID “applyStyle”, and onClick I call the $('form').jqTransform(); Disabled the the $('form').jqTransform(); from the load of the page. If I press the a#applyStyle, before expanding the div#advancedSearch I get the same problem that I had. But if I expand the the div#advancedSearch and press the the a#applyStyle after, the problem is solved. However, if I run the page with the $('form').jqTransform(); function on the load, I cannot reapply it after with the pressing of the a#applyStyle. I think that the solution could be: disabling the all the elements that are inside the div#advancedSearch, and on the same function that expands the div, make It also apply the styles to the elements that are inside the div#advancedSearch. However, I don’t know how to do this (nether if this will work). PS: This seems to be a known issue with the plugin, but I cannot wait indefinitely for a solution.

  I'm building a little app using Java and Swing in NetBeans. Using NetBeans design window, I created a JFrame with a JPanel inside. Now I want to dynamically add some jTextFields to the JPanel. I wrote something like that: Vector textFieldsVector = new Vector(); JTextField tf; int i = 0; while (i < 3) { tf = new JTextField(); textFieldVector.add(tf); myPanel.add(tf); //myPanel is the JPanel where I want to put the JTextFields i++; } myPanel.validate(); myPanel.repaint(); But nothing happens: when I run the app, the JFrame shows with the JPanel inside, but the JTextFields don't. I'm a total newbie in writing graphical Java apps, so I'm surely missing something very simple, but I can't see what.

  Situation: I have an Eclipse RCP Application, which I am trying to build with tycho plugin for Eclipse. When I am executing my Eclipse Application inside of the IDe - the Application is executed normally. When using tycho to build the Application - the following error is thrown: The type org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Button cannot be resolved. It is indirectly referenced from required .class files What I did : In other cases where a "missing requirenments" exception was thrown, which I found - a missing transitive plugin-dependency was the reason. In my case an SWT widget "Button" is missing, so I am trying to import swt. SWT is platform dependant so I am importing swt inside of the product, as described here. Anyway, during compilation the error occurs again. Question: Do someone have any Idea, how to solve this Problem?

• Shift+Tab not working in TreeView control

  I cannot get backwards navigation using Shift+Tab to work in a TreeView that contains TextBoxs, forward navigation using Tab works fine and jump from TextBox to TextBox inside the TreeView. Anytime Shift+Tab is used when one of the TextBoxes inside the TreeView, then the focus is move to the previous control outside the TreeView, instead of the previous control inside the TreeView. Also its only Shift+Tab navigation that are not working correctly, Ctrl+Shift+Tab work as expected and in the correct order. Any suggestions to what I'm doing wrong? • ASP:LinkButton and Eval

  I'm using an ASP:LinkButton inside of an ItemTemplate inside of a TemplateField in a GridView. For the command argument for the link button I want to pass the ID of the row from the datasource that the gridview is bound to, so I'm doing something like this: <asp:LinkButton ID="viewLogButton" CommandName="viewLog" CommandArgument="<%#Eval("ID")%>" Text="View Log" runat="server"/> Unfortunately, the resulting HTML is this: <asp:LinkButton ID="viewLogButton" CommandName="viewLog" CommandArgument="3" Text="View Log" runat="server"/> It seems that it is parsing the Eval() properly, but this is somehow causing it not to parse the LinkButton tag and just dump it out as literal text. Does anyone know: a) why this is happening and, b) what a good solution to this problem is?

• SSH works in putty but not terminal

  In Scala one might define methods inside other methods. This limits their scope of use to inside of definition block. I use them to improve readability of code that uses several higher-order functions. In contrast to anonymous function literals, this allows me to give them meaningful names before passing them on. • php regex to remove HTML

  Before we start, strip_tags() doesn't work. now, I've got some data that needs to be parsed, the problem is, I need to get rid of all the HTML that has been formated very strangely. the tags look like this: (notice the spaces) < p > blah blah blah < / p > < a href= " link.html " > blah blah blah < /a > All the regexs I've been trying aren't working, and I don't know enough about regex formating to make them work. I don't care about preserving anything inside of the tags, and would prefer to get rid of the text inside a link if I could. Anyone have any idea? (I really need to just sit down and learn regular expressions one day)

• why is this rails association loading individually after an eager load?

  I'm trying to avoid the N+1 queries problem with eager loading, but it's not working. The associated models are still being loaded individually. Here are the relevant ActiveRecords and their relationships: class Player < ActiveRecord::Base has_one :tableau end Class Tableau < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :player has_many :tableau_cards has_many :deck_cards, :through => :tableau_cards end Class TableauCard < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :tableau belongs_to :deck_card, :include => :card end class DeckCard < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :card has_many :tableaus, :through => :tableau_cards end class Card < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :deck_cards end and the query I'm using is inside this method of Player: def tableau_contains(card_id) self.tableau.tableau_cards = TableauCard.find :all, :include => [ {:deck_card => (:card)}], :conditions => ['tableau_cards.tableau_id = ?', self.tableau.id] contains = false for tableau_card in self.tableau.tableau_cards # my logic here, looking at attributes of the Card model, with # tableau_card.deck_card.card; # individual loads of related Card models related to tableau_card are done here end return contains end Does it have to do with scope? This tableau_contains method is down a few method calls in a larger loop, where I originally tried doing the eager loading because there are several places where these same objects are looped through and examined. Then I eventually tried the code as it is above, with the load just before the loop, and I'm still seeing the individual SELECT queries for Card inside the tableau_cards loop in the log. I can see the eager-loading query with the IN clause just before the tableau_cards loop as well. EDIT: additional info below with the larger, outer loop Here's the larger loop. • AutoCompleteExtender positioning menu incorrectly when scrolled

  We have an AutoCompleteExtender linked to a TextBox. Both controls are placed inside an UpdatePanel, and the UpdatePanel is displayed as a pop-up dialog using a Javascript library (Ext.BasicDialog). The pop-up is a div on the page, not a separate window. The problem is that when the user scrolls inside the pop-up, the AutoCompleteExtender shows its menu in the wrong place. It looks like it is taking the visible distance from the top of the popup and positioning the menu from the top of the inner html of the popup (which is not visible) We are using Version 1.0.20229.20821 of the AjaxControlToolkit, and we are targetting ASP.NET Framework vewrsion 2.0. • What to write in "Web location" field when starting an "New website" in Visual Studio 2010?

  I want a website to be deployed automatically to a local IIS (built in Windows XP Pro SP3), avoiding VisualStudio-built-in server if possible. I'd like development source files to be stored in a project folder outside wwwroot (I wouldn't mind built files to be copied to wwwroot each time I press F5). I don't store my projects inside default directories inside "My documents". What should I specify as in "Web location" when starting an "New website" in Visual Studio 2010? A deployment path in wwwroot, a folder where I'd like to save my project, or something else? I want the website to be a part of a complex solution in VS 2010, also icludinc a class libray project, a WinForms application project, a Windows Service project and a common Entitity Framework data model.

• Unable to access global variable defined in settings.php [Drupal]

  I am developing a website using Drupal 6.16. I want to define a variable in settings.php like $ge_path = 'some/path/here'; And I want to use it inside my modules. function mymodule_block(....) { global $ge_path; $fullPath = $ge_path . '/another/path'; doSomething($fullPath); } But I am getting NULL as the value of $ge_path. Why am I not able to access the global variable defines in settings.php? How can I get the proper value inside my module functions? The funny thing is, I am able to access $db_url['default'] and $db_url['mydatabase'] etc.. which are defined just two lines above $ge_path in settings.php!

• Constraining window position to desktop working area

  I want to allow a user to drag my Win32 window around only inside the working area of the desktop. In other words, they shouldn't be able to have any part of the window extend outside the monitor(s) nor should the window overlap the taskbar. I'd like to do it in a way that does cause any stuttering. Handling WM_MOVE messages and calling MoveWindow() to reposition the window if it goes off works, but I don't like the flickering effect that's caused by MoveWindow(). I also tried handling WM_MOVING which prevents the need to call MoveWindow() by altering the destination rectangle before the move actually happens. This resolves the flickering problem, but another issue I run into is that the cursor some times gets aways from the window when a drag occurs allowing the user to drag the window around while the cursor is not even inside the window. How do I constrain my window without running into these issues?

• creating a wrapper around a 3rd party assembly - swap out and decouple

  I have an email component that I am integrating into my application, looking for some tips on how should build a wrapper around it so I can swap it out with another 3rd party component if needed. My approach right now is it: build an interface will the functionality I need. create a class that implements the interface, using my 3rd party component inside this class. any usage of this component will be via the interface so like: IPop3 pop3 = new AcmeIncePop3Wrapper(); pop3.connect(); and inside AcmeIncePop3Wrapper will be: public void connect() { AcmeIncePop3 pop = new AcmeIncePop3(); pop.connect(); } Is that a good approach? I could probably add another abstraction by using ninject so I could swap out implementations, but really this seems to be all I need as i don't expect to be changing 3rd party assemblies every day, just don't want to make things so tightly coupled.

• jquery load links not clickable

  ok i am loading a separate page with links in it, into a page named index.php. it loads fine, but when i click one of the links inside the loaded content, nothing happens. they dont act as links. but if i do a alert('hi'); after the load('page.html'); then it will work. any ideas on getting this to work without alerting something after it loads? oh also i cant use a callback, unless there is a way to update the get variable because the page loading, has a $_GET variable, and the links inside the loaded page are supposed to update the $_GET variable. anyways is there a way to make the links clickable after loading the page?

• where is the best place to place a javascript snippet to alter the DOM of a page before it renders

  I have a few dynamic pages and I want to alter certain elements before the page has fully rendered. My snippet is something like document.body.getElementById("change").innerHTML = "<img src..."; I do not have access to change the content server side. Where is the best place to put the snippet to have the code run before the page it has rendered? Rather, is putting the javascript in either the HEAD (inside the window.onload event?) or before the closing BODY(not inside an event listener) optimal?

• Subsonic and the VB.net 2005 interop toolkit

  I have an application I am converting over from vb6 to vb.net 2.0/3.5. Using Subsonic 2.2 and the vb.net Interop Toolkit 2005. Cannot seem to get the .net form using subsonic to work inside the interop environment. It keeps saying it cannot find the subsonic service provider in the app.config. But I know it is there. Has anyone used these two toolkits together successfully? Will subsonic even work inside the interop environment in that way? Thanks in advance!

  Hi, I see many post dealing with the UIScrollView like in the PhotoApp, but I don't really understand them, thats why I want to reopen a post about it and have a simple solution. What I want is to create (without IB) a simple UIViewController who will contain a UIScrollView (inside my scrollView there will be image and the scrollView will be set to pagingEnable to YES of course). I want to be able with a simple touch of the screen to display the navigationController.navigationBar inside my UIViewController and with another touch not displaying it of course. • SSH multi-hop connections with netcat mode proxy

  Since OpenSSH 5.4 there is a new feature called natcat mode, which allows you to bind STDIN and STDOUT of local SSH client to a TCP port accessible through the remote SSH server. This mode is enabled by simply calling ssh -W [HOST]:[PORT] Theoretically this should be ideal for use in the ProxyCommand setting in per-host SSH configurations, which was previously often used with the nc (netcat) command. ProxyCommand allows you to configure a machine as proxy between you local machine and the target SSH server, for example if the target SSH server is hidden behind a firewall. The problem now is, that instead of working, it throws a cryptic error message in my face: Bad packet length 1397966893. Disconnecting: Packet corrupt Here is an excerpt from my ~/.ssh/config: Host * Protocol 2 ControlMaster auto ControlPath ~/.ssh/cm_socket/%r@%h:%p ControlPersist 4h Host proxy-host proxy-host.my-domain.tld HostName proxy-host.my-domain.tld ForwardAgent yes Host target-server target-server.my-domain.tld HostName target-server.my-domain.tld ProxyCommand ssh -W %h:%p proxy-host ForwardAgent yes As you can see here, I'm using the ControlMaster feature so I don't have to open more than one SSH connection per-host. The client machine I tested this with is an Ubuntu 11.10 (x86_64) and both proxy-host and target-server are Debian Wheezy Beta 3 (x86_64) machines. The error happens when I call ssh target-server.
