• MSAccess Change Date Value Before Validation

  In a grid I have a date/time field where I would like the user to be able to type in short-hand formats for dates and times. For example, if they type in "435p" and then focus off of the cell they get the message "The value you entered isn't valid for this field.". Instead, I want to trap a pre-validationevent and change it to "4:35pm" for them. What event can I use? I've tried: LostFocus & BeforeUpdate: too late (validation fires before event) Dirty & OnChange: too early (they haven't left the cell yet) Or is there a way to turn off the native validation rule that is checking for date formats?

• Is it a good idea to define a variable in a local block for a case of a switch statement?

  I have a rather long switch-case statement. Some of the cases are really short and trivial. A few are longer and need some variables that are never used anywhere else, like this: switch (action) { case kSimpleAction: // Do something simple break; case kComplexAction: { int specialVariable = 5; // Do something complex with specialVariable } break; } The alternative would be to declare that variable before going into the switch like this: int specialVariable = 5; switch (action) { case kSimpleAction: // Do something simple break; case kComplexAction: // Do something complex with specialVariable break; } This can get rather confusing since it is not clear to which case the variable belongs and it uses some unnecessary memory. However, I have never seen this usage anywhere else. Do you think it is a good idea to declare variables locally in a block for a single case?

• Best way to migrate servers without losing any data and with no downtime(?)

  This is a methodology question from a freelancer, with a corollary on MySQL.. Is there a way to migrate from an old dedicated server to a new one without losing any data in-between - and with no downtime? In the past, I've had to lose MySQL data between the time when the new server goes up (i.e., all files transferred, system up and ready), and when I take the old server down (data still transferred to old until new one takes over). There is also a short period where both are down for DNS, etc., to refresh. Is there a way for MySQL/root to easily transfer all data that was updated/inserted between a certain time frame?

For example this is what I get from the "man ls" command: LS(1) User Commands LS(1) NNAAMMEE ls - list directory contents SSYYNNOOPPSSIISS llss [_O_P_T_I_O_N]... [_F_I_L_E]... DDEESSCCRRIIPPTTIIOONN List information about the FILEs (the current directory by default). Sort entries alphabetically if none of --ccffttuuvvSSUUXX nor ----ssoorrtt. Mandatory arguments to long options are mandatory for short options For some mysterious reason capital letters get duplicated. Can anyone explain what's going on?

• Display processes that access a folder.

  I am trying to write a simple program, preferably in C, that will watch a given directory. Whenever a process accesses that directory, I just want to print out the name of that process. It seems simple, but I am coming up short for solutions on MSDN. Does anyone know which library calls I will need for this, or any helpful advice? I have considered repeatedly querying for what processes have handles on the given directory and just watching for additions to that list.This approach just seems very intensive and I am hoping there is an easier way.   Hello everyone :) I've heard in several places that it's bad to have code that is too wide onscreen. For example: for (std::vector<EnumServiceInformation>::const_iterator currentService = services.begin(); currentService != services.end(); currentService++) However, I've heard many arguments for 80 character wide limits. I'm assuming this 80 character limit comes from the traditional command prompt, which is typically 80 characters wide. However -- most of us are working on something much better than a typical command prompt, and I feel that using an 80 character limit encourages use of variable names that are far too short and do not describe what the variable is used for. What is a reasonable limit for a new project with no existing coding width standard?

  Hello: In short, currently I am using the following code to pull records from multiple tables in a Sqlite Db and insert them in a single combobox ($SearchBar): set SrchVals1 [db eval {SELECT DISTINCT Stitle From Subcontract Order By Stitle ASC}] set SrchVals2 [db eval {... set SrchVals3 ... set SrchValsALL [concat $SrchVals1 $SrchVals2 $SrchVals3] $SearchBar configure -value $SrchValsAll For the variable "SrchVals1", I am trying to figure out a way to concatenate the text "Sub: " to each individual record in SrchVals1. For example, if SrchVals1 shows the following records in the combobox: First Title Second Title Third Title I would like to concatenate so that the records in the combobox look like this: Sub: First Title Sub: Second Title Sub: Third Title I understand that I might have to use a foreach statement; however, I am having no luck writing one that adds "Sub: " in front of each record, as opposed to one. This seems like something that should be pretty easy, but I cannot seem to figure it out. Does anyone know how I can achieve these results? Thank you, DFM

Right now, I have imzip.zip which has three txt files: a.txt b.txt c.txt When I try to load imzip.zip using: http://pastebin.com/m1d974990 It loads the files alphabetically. In this case: a.txt b.txt c.txt However, I would like to be able to have the class load on different variables such as by size, date or simply random. The problem is I have no idea how I would go about modifying the class to fit my needs. I would really appreciate your help! :D

  Hi, I am using the Apache HTTPClient for Java and I'm facing a really strange issue. Sometimes when I try to get a dynamically generated page it returns its actual content, but other times (with another parameter) all I get is a short sequence of \t,\r and \n. How could I track what's going on on the different cases in order to find where is the bug? • How to name variables which are structs

  Hello, i often work on private projects using the WinApi, and as you might know, it has thousands of named and typedefed structs like MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION. I will stick to this one in my question, what still is preferred, or better when you want to name a variable of this type. Is there some kind of style guide for this case? For example if i need that variable for the VirtualQueryEx function. Some ideas: MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION memoryBasicInformation; MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION memory_basic_information; Just use the name of the struct non capitalized and with or without the underlines. MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION basicInformation; MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION information; Short form? MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION mbi; I often see this style, using the abbreviation of the struct name. MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION buffer; VirtualQueryEx defines the third parameter lpBuffer (where you pass the pointer to the struct), so using this name might be an idea, too. Cheers

I have a dynamic dns account where I map my machine's dynamic IP to an address say, www.xxx.yyy.net Now, I have registered another short domain name say www.yyy.com, the hosting is on a linux server. Now, my machine is actually a webserver which runs .net website which can be accessed by www.xxx.yyy.net I need my homepage(index.php) in my www.yyy.com handle the redirection in a way that the pages to be loaded from www.xxx.yyy.net/.... but it should look in the browser as www.yyy.com/... Is there any way to do this using php?

• Which "platform" should we use for a notifier-component?

  Hi all We need to develop a notifier component. What it will do, is to scan a database at given intervals (say, every 15th minute), to see if any notifications needs to be sent out. We're running on Windows, and so we've been looking into either a Windows Service or the Windows Task Scheduler. Our biggest concern is the robustness of our implementation. If it, for some reason, crashes, can it be auto-restarted the next interval? Can we use custom logging logic, to take care of crashes? I'd like an educated guess on what to use here :) Feel free to say if you need additional info, to make such a guess.. Props will be given if someone could make a short listing of the pros n cons of a windows service vs. the windows task scheduler. Also, it should be noted, that we aren't set on either of these, so if you have any alternatives, please, do post away. Thanks in advance :)

• Produce a script to hit Google once a day and log our position in the results?

  The need has arisen within our organisation to monitor (on a daily basis) where our site appears (both organic and PPC) on the page 1 of Google. Also where a key competitor appears. For certain key words. In the immediate short term a colleague is doing this by hitting Google manually and jotting down the results. Yep. It occurs to us we can write a script (e.g. using C#) to do this. I know Analytics will tell us an awful lot but it doesn't note the competitor's position, plus I don't think it has other data we want. Question is, is there an existing basic tool which does this (for free, I guess)? And if we write it ourselves, where to start and are there obvious pitfalls to avoid (for example can Google detect and block automated requests?)

  Hello I have a short question to the notepad tutorial on the android website. I wrote a simple function in the tutorial code to delete the whole database. • How does one record audio from a Javascript based webapp?

  I'm trying to write a web-app that records WAV files (eg: from the user's microphone). I know Javascript alone can not do this, but I'm interested in the least proprietary method to augment my Javascript with. My targeted browsers are Firefox for PC and Mac (so no ActiveX). Please share your experiences with this. I gather it can be done with Flash (but not as a WAV formated file). I gather it can be done with Java (but not without code-signing). Are these the only options? @dominic-mazzoni I'd like to record the file as a WAV because because the purpose of the webapp will be to assemble a library of good quality short soundbites. I estimate upload will be 50 MB, which is well worth it for the quality. The app will only be used on our intranet.   Consider the following snippet: int i = 99999999; byte b = 99; short s = 9999; Integer ii = Integer.valueOf(9); // should be within cache System.out.println(new Integer(i) == i); // "true" System.out.println(new Integer(b) == b); // "true" System.out.println(new Integer(s) == s); // "true" System.out.println(new Integer(ii) == ii); // "false" It's obvious why the last line will ALWAYS prints "false": we're using == reference identity comparison, and a new object will NEVER be == to an already existing object. The question is about the first 3 lines: are those comparisons guaranteed to be on the primitive int, with the Integer auto-unboxed? Are there cases where the primitive would be auto-boxed instead, and reference identity comparisons are performed? (which would all then be false!)

• predict location of single-line text from a UITextView

  Is this possible? Specifically, I have a UITextView, and the text is short enough that it will fit on a single line. I want to predict where it will appear, so that (for example) if I wanted to, I could set up a UILabel that rendered the text in exactly the same location. Once I get that figured out, what I really want to do is pick contentInset and/or contentOffset so that the text of the UITextView and the left-justified UILabel will render in the same location. But I figure the above will let me do that. EDIT: In response to a comment, the fundamental problem I am trying to get around is that UITextField does not let you set the location of the cursor. It appears a lot of people have tried to get around this without success. I need to be able to move the cursor -- inserting/deleting text there is not enough.   I want to be able to do the following: I have an array of strings that contain data types: string DataTypeValues[20] = {"char", "unsigned char", "short", "int"}; Then later, I would like to create a variable of one of the data types at runtime. I won't know at compile time what the correct data type should be. So for example, if at runtime I determined a variable x needed to be of type int: DataTypeValues[3] x = 100; Obviously this won't work, so how could I do something like this?

  Yea this is a dumb question... However in both of my C++ classes we did not do this at all (except for native libraries: iostream, iomanip, etc.)... My question is can anyone provide a link that gives the general explanation of adding libraries to C++? I do realize what what #include means; it's just I have no clue on the linker/directories in a C++ IDE. So long question short; could I get a general explanation of terms used to link libraries in C++? I'm using c::b w/ MinGW.

• Controlling access to large files in Apache

  Hi there, I am looking to control access to some large files (we're talking many GB here) by the use of signed URLs. The files are currently restricted by LDAP Basic authentication (mod_auth_ldap), but I need to change this to verify the signature (passed as a query parameter in the URL). Basically, I just need to run a script to verify the signature, and allow the request to proceed as if authentication had succeeded. My initial thought to this was just to use a simple CGI script, but as the files are so large I'm concerned about performance. So, really, this question is (probably) more like "are there any performance implications of streaming large files from a CGI script via Apache?"… and if so, "is there a better way of doing this (short of writing a dedicated authentication module)?" If this makes any sense, help would be much appreciated :) P.S. I wasn't sure exactly what to search for for this (10 minutes of Googling were fruitless), so I may very well be duplicating someone else's post.
