  • Windows Phone 7 dev: C# or silverlight for a simple app?

    I'm about to hire a programmer to develop Windows Phone 7 apps. The current app that shall be developed is quite simple. The app will download content from a Web-API. There are two lists to select content. There is a single item content page. Users can rate the content and upload photos. The screens will be produced by our artist. I am pretty sure that most of the available programmers haven't touched WP7 development yet. Now the questions are: What technology is suitable for this kind of app? What technology requires less research, learning and production time? Do you already have experience of limitations of silverlight compared to C#? (I am also thinking of future projects) My guess is that silverlight programmers are more experienced in UI programming than C# coders. Do you feel the same way?

  • Principles of an extensible data proxy

    There is a growing industry now with more than 30 companies playing in the Backend-As-A-Service (BaaS) market. The principle is simple: give companies a secure way of exposing data housed on premises and behind the firewall publicly. This can include database data, as well as Legacy PC data through established connectors; SAP for example provides a connector for transacting with their legacy systems. Early attempts were fixed providers for specific systems like SAP, IBM or Oracle, but the new breed is extensible, allowing Channel Partners and Consultants to build robust integration applications that can consume whatever data sources the client wants to expose. I just happen to be close to finishing a Cloud Based HTML5 application platform that provides robust integration services, and I would like to break ground on an extensible data proxy to complete the system. From what I can gather, I need to provide either an installable web service of some kind, or a Cloud service which the client can configure with VPN for interactions. Then I can build in connectors, which can be activated with a service account, and expose those transactions via web services of some kind (JSON, SOAP, etc). I can also provide a framework that allows people to build in their own connectors, and use some kind of schema to hook those connectors into the proxy. The end result is some kind of public facing web service that could securely be consumed by applications to show data through HTML5 on any device. My gut is, this isn't as hard as it sounds. Almost all of the 30+ companies (With more popping up almost weekly) have all come into existence in the last 18 months or so, which tells me either the root technology, or the skillset to create the technology is in abundance right now. Where should I start on this? Are there some open source projects I can leverage? A specific group of developers I can hire? I'm confident someone here can set me on the right path and save me some time.   • "Oracle Certified Expert, Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 6 Java Persistence API Developer" Preparation

    I have been working with Hibernate for a fews years now, and I want to solidify and demonstrate my knowledge by taking the Oracle JPA certification, also known as: "Oracle Certified Expert, Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 6 Java Persistence API Developer (CX-310-094)" There is a training course provided by Oracle: "Building Database Driven Applications with JPA (SL-370-EE6)" But this costs $1800 and I think it would be overkill for my needs. Ideally, I would like a self study guide that will cover everything in the exam. I have looked for books and these seem like possibilities: Pro JPA 2: Mastering the Java Persistence API (Expert's Voice in Java Technology) and Beginning Java EE 6 with GlassFish 3 2nd Edition (Expert's Voice in Java Technology) But these aren't checklist type study guides as far as I am aware. I found the official SCJP study guide very useful, but I think the equivalent text for the JPA exam isn't out yet. If anyone has taken this exam, I would be grateful to hear how you prepared for it.   • What to do with database in dev/production phases of a website?

    For a while now I've been keeping a website I'm developing in the standard dev/production phases. Its been pretty simple: Mercurial repo for dev, repo for production. Do work in dev, get approved, push to production. But now I'm trying to apply this process to a new website that has a database and am struggling on how to figure out a development strategy. What I didn't mention above is that I do all my work on my own repo, push it to dev, then later push it to production, so its 3 different servers. So how do I manage my database? The obvious solution of mysqldump every commit isn't going to happen, and a dump at the end of the day isn't all that helpful when you want to undo later one change that happened in the middle of the day. What is the best way to accomplish this?

  • Battery discharges while computer is off

    I bought a hp 15-r003np 2 weeks ago and installed ubuntu 14.04 LTS with dual boot (to windows 8). When i shutdown ubuntu, in the next day battery has 85% of charge, despite the computer shutdown. If i power off in windows battery charge is 100% in the next day. Does anyone have noticed the same problem? I think the network adapter is not on wol mode, seen via windows network config properties. I need help to solve this problem... (it's not right to work around restarting to windows to do the shutdown properly...)
