  • X11 tunnelling through SSH from Fedora 3 server to Windows Vista client fails to work.

    Okay, I've tried using Xming and PuTTY, as well as Cygwin/X and Cygwin ssh, and it is not working. I've been able to run X applications locally, so it's not a client-side X problem. I've connected to the server using ssh -X user@server and ended up with this: local-user@client: ~$ ssh -X user@server user@server's password: Last login: Sun Jul 19 15:26:46 2009 from 192.168.100.147 [user@server ~]$ xclock & [1] 27770 [user@server ~]$ Error: Can't open display: localhost:10.0 [1]+ Exit 1 xclock [user@server ~]$ [user@server ~]$ Here's the relevant snippet of my sshd_config #AllowTcpForwarding yes #GatewayPorts no #X11Forwarding no X11Forwarding yes X11DisplayOffset 10 X11UseLocalhost yes I can't seem to find ssh_config on the client-side. /etc/ssh doesn't exist.

  • What are the good alternatives to Windows Movie Maker in Vista?

    Short of getting a Mac and using iMovie, what are the alternatives that you'll recommend to a non-profit organization that needs to produce simple (but polished) videos to showcase their community service activities to raise funds. Currently they are using Windows Movie Maker but have sort of outgrown it. I installed Jashaka for them, and understandably, they couldn't grok it at all. Their current system is powerful enough to handle most video editing tasks.

  • How do you disable the magnifier in Windows Vista?

    Every so often while I'm working, if I accidentally jolt the mouse, the magnifier starts. I'm fairly sure the cause is that some comination of mouse keys is supposed to start the magnifier, and I occasionally hit the right keys accidentally. However, I've never been able to reproduce the behaviour deliberately so I don't know which combination. This is very annoying since switching the magnifier off is non-trivial (control panel, or run dialog, which are hard to use when the magnifier keeps - ummm - windowing and magnifying the bit of screen you're about to click on :-) ). So I'm wondering if there's any way to disable the magnifier completely, so that it doesn't start when you do whatever it is you'd normally do to the mouse to start it? Anyone know?

    I have a Seagate expansion 2TB HDD which I've managed to get working on my wireless router (thanks to fat32format) however I haven't managed to set my backup to work with it. Vist Home Premium requires that I input a username and password in the backup utility. As far as I'm aware that type of access control isn't set on the HDD: Can I set up the access control on the HDD? If so how Or, can I set the backup to work without it?   • How to prevent Vista from entering Sleep mode when certain conditions exist?

    Mainly, I would like to prevent my laptop from entering Sleep mode when I am playing music or streaming video. This is on my laptop, so another option that would work would be to prevent sleep mode whenever the laptop is plugged into my tv via HDMI (ie when HDMI port is in use). Or prevent sleep mode whenever there is audio playing.. I am soon upgrading to Windows 7, so solutions using 7 would be great also/instead. Thanks!

I checked ComputerpropertiesEnvironment Variables, but path to django-admin.py is not in anywhere. So I added C:\Python25\Lib\site-packages\django\bin which is the folder of django-admin.py in User variables for shin Variable PATH, Value C:\Program Files\Google\google_appengine\;C:\Python25\Lib\site-packages\django\bin\ Am I supposed to add to System variables??   • APC decreasing php performance??? (php 5.3, apache 2.2, windows vista 64bit)

    Hi, I have an Apache/2.2.15 (VC9) and PHP/5.3.2 (VC9 thread safe) running as an apache module on Vista 64bit machine. All running fine. Project that I'm benchmarking (with apache's ab utility) is basically standard Zend Framework project with no db connection involved. Average (median) apache response is about 0.15 seconds. After I've installed APC (3.1.4-dev VC9 thread safe) with standard settings suddenly the request response time raised to 1.3 seconds (!), which is unacceptable... All apc settings looked always good (through the apc.php script: enough shm memory, no cache full, fragmentation 0%). Only difference was to disable the stats lookup (apc.stat = 0). Then the response dropped to 0.09 seconds which was finally better than without the apc. IIRC, it's expected and obvious that the stat lookup creates some overhead, but shouldn't it still be far more performant compared to running wihout the apc extension at all? Or put it differently why is the apc.stat creating so much overhead? Apparently, something is not working as it should, I don't really know where to start looking.   • I can't get SetSystemTime to work in Windows Vista using C# with Interop (P/Invoke).

    Hi, I'm having a hard time getting SetSystemTime working in my C# code. SetSystemtime is a kernel32.dll function. I'm using P/invoke (interop) to call it. SetSystemtime returns false and the error is "Invalid Parameter". I've posted the code below. I stress that GetSystemTime works just fine. I've tested this on Vista and Windows 7. Based on some newsgroup postings I've seen I have turned off UAC. No difference. I have done some searching for this problem. I found this link: http://groups.google.com.tw/group/microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.interop/browse_thread/thread/805fa8603b00c267 where the problem is reported but no resolution seems to be found. Notice that UAC is also mentioned but I'm not sure this is the problem. Also notice that this gentleman gets no actual Win32Error. Can someone try my code on XP? Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong and how to fix it. If the answer is to somehow change permission settings programatically, I'd need an example. I would have thought turning off UAC should cover that though. I'm not required to use this particular way (SetSystemTime). I'm just trying to introduce some "clock drift" to stress test something. If there's another way to do it, please tell me. Frankly, I'm surprised I need to use Interop to change the system time. I would have thought there is a .NET method.   • Tips on implementing a custom UITextView interface on the iPhone?

    I am trying to implement a control to edit text that will display the text in multiple colors. None of the solutions I have attempted yet have been good enough. UITextView cannot accomplish this. All of the text must be the same color. Using CoreGraphics to draw the text does not allow the text to be selected. Using a UIWebView, DIV and PRE tags cannot be set to contentEditable on Mobile Safari. Currently playing with using an off-screen TEXTAREA and an on-screen DIV to show the rendered text. This works pretty well, except supporting all of these at the same time seems impossible: click-to-type, click-to-move-cursor, click-and-hold-select/copy/paste. Anyone have any tips on this predicament? I've been trying to find any preexisting library out there that will accomplish this in a good way, to no luck. I'm open to any ideas!

My objective in the real end is to have one or two queries that would spit the whole tree for me.     Hello I'm creating a kind of massive network for users to register and login. I want to try using classes, but I've never used them (expect some mysql-wrappers etc). Could you provide some tips and sample-structure for my project? The idea is to simply have a index.php, which prints the whole page and does all the action. Index.php calls functions from classes inside other files. I need: user-class for checking if logged in and retrieving user-info different kind of "page"-classes for functions needed in those pages I'm not asking for full code, but just a start. I don't know, how to use public functions or anything like that. How to wrap these classes to work together? So no functions, just the structure! Martti Laine

  • Any tips on switching from bash to zsh if often using shell inside of emacs?

    Related to this question: Advantages and disadvantages between zsh and emacs' (e)shell, I've read some great things about zsh, when using M-x shell, my familiar emacs shell seemed like it would need some customizations. I also use evil-mode in shell mode, so that means I use vi keystrokes for shell editing. Took a little while to get accustomed to this, but I really like it. Any advice or tips on going from bash to zsh if one uses emacs? Or better off adding the file completion mentioned in this question: Worth switching to zsh for casual use?.

    Hi, I'm trying to work out how to get a div (#tips) to appear when the user scrolls into the 2nd quarter of its containing div's height (#wrap), and then have it disappear when the user scrolls into the last quarter.
