  • Deploy to web container, bundle web container or embed web container...

    I am developing an application that needs to be as simple as possible to install for the end user. While the end users will likely be experience Linux users (or sales engineers), they don't really know anything about Tomcat, Jetty, etc, nor do I think they should. So I see 3 ways to deploy our applications. I should also state that this is the first app that I have had to deploy that had a web interface, so I haven't really faced this question before. First is to deploy the application into an existing web container. Since we only deploy to Suse or RedHat this seems easy enough to do. However, we're not big on the idea of multiple apps running in one web container. It makes it harder to take down just one app. The next option is to just bundle Tomcat or Jetty and have the startup/shutdown scripts launch our bundled web container. Or 3rd, embed.. This will probably provide the same user experience as the second option. I'm curious what others do when faced with this problem to make it as fool proof as possible on the end user. I've almost ruled out deploying into an existing web container as we often like to set per application resource limits and CPU affinity, which I believe would affect all apps deployed into a web container/app server and not just a specific application.   • Squid handling of concurrent cache misses

    We're using a Squid cache to off-load traffic from our web servers, ie. it's setup as a reverse-proxy responding to inbound requests before they hit our web servers. When we get blitzed with concurrent requests for the same request that's not in the cache, Squid proxies all the requests through to our web ("origin") servers. For us, this behavior isn't ideal: our origin servers gets bogged down trying to fulfill N identical requests concurrently. Instead, we'd like the first request to proxy through to the origin server, the rest of the requests to queue at the Squid layer, and then all be fulfilled by Squid when the origin server has responded to that first request. Does anyone know how to configure Squid to do this? We've read through the documentation multiple times and thoroughly web-searched the topic, but can't figure out how to do it. We use Akamai too and, interestingly, this is its default behavior. (However, Akamai has so many nodes that we still see lots of concurrent requests in certain traffic spike scenarios, even with Akamai's super-node feature enabled.) This behavior is clearly configurable for some other caches, eg. the Ehcache documentation offers the option "Concurrent Cache Misses: A cache miss will cause the filter chain, upstream of the caching filter to be processed. To avoid threads requesting the same key to do useless duplicate work, these threads block behind the first thread." Some folks call this behavior a "blocking cache," since the subsequent concurrent requests block behind the first request until it's fulfilled or timed-out. Thx for looking over my noob question!   • Delphi native Web Service applications not working. IIS 7 seems to be stripping the pathinfo

    I've run into an interesting problem that I never encountered with XP or IIS 6. Basically, I can't get a native Delphi (WebBroker) Web service server to work with a native Web service client in Windows 7 64-bit. Here's the most basic breakdown. If I create a new Web service application in Delphi 2010 (or any version, back to Delphi 7), and access it using IE 8, I can see the HTML that the WSDLHTMLPublish component creates, but I can never get to the SOAP. In the same way, the WSDL Importer cannot get to the SOAP either. (I have IIS 7 configured to use a 32-bit application pool, and I have created a working Script Map to the Handler Mappings. In short, the 32-bit ISAPI Web service is running). For example, I have a simple Web service server named TestService (created using the default sample interface generated when you create a new Web service server). I installed it in a virtual directory named scripts. If I enter http://localhost/scripts/TestService.dll/wsdl, IIS 7 displays the page http://localhost/scripts/TestService.dll. If I put my mouse over the WSDL link for the ITestService, I see http://localhost/scripts/TestService.dll/wsdl/ITestService in the status bar. However, when I click this link, the address bar shows http://localhost/scripts/TestService.dll/wsdl/ITestService, but I see only the HTML from http://localhost/scripts/TestService.dll. There seems no way to get to the SOAP definition. IIS 7 seems to be ignoring everything after the script name (it is ignoring the pathinfo). Additional evidence that IIS7 is stripping off the pathinfo is that if I pause my mouse over the ITestService link, the statusbar shows http://localhost/scripts/TestService.dll?intf=ITestService. Clicking that link takes me to another HTML page, the one associated with http://localhost/scripts/TestService.dll?intf=ITestService. However, any link that includes a pathinfo following the script name, takes me simply to http://localhost/scripts/TestService.dll. I have tested this in Delphi 7, Delphi 2010, and Delphi XE, with the same results. I am guessing that IIS7 is stripping off the pathinfo, since even the WSDL Importer cannot get to the SOAP definition. Tried creating a new Web service using the CGI option, and got the same result. Have any idea what is going on? Added: Bob Swart reports he has had no problems under Windows 7 32-bit. Downloading the 32-bit OS and will try that (in a new VM).

I want to redirect all subdomain traffic (the site is going away) to the primary domain. This is not working: Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine on RewriteRule (.*) http://www.newdomain.com/ [R=301,L] What happens, is if you go to this: http://sub.newdomain.com/some/path/ You get this: http://www.newdomain.com/some/path/ I want it all to go to the root.

    Hi All, I've seen a number of post about Proxy Authentication, but none that seams to address this problem. I'm building a SharePoint Web Service consuming desktop application, using Java, JAX-WS in NetBeans. I have a working prototype, that can query the server for authentication mode, successfully authenticate and retrieve a list of web site. However, if I run the same app from a network that is behind a proxy server (the proxy does not require authentication), then I'm running into trouble. The normal -dhttp.proxyHost ... settings does not seam to help any. But I have found that by creating a ProxySelector class and setting it as default, I can regain access to the authentication web service, but I still can't retrieve the list of web sites from the SharePoint server. It's almost as if the authentication I provide is going to the proxy rather than the SharePoint server. Anyone have any experience on how to make this work?   • pfSense with two WANs, routing skype traffic over a specific WAN

    I have a pfSense setup with two WANs (WAN1 and WAN2) and one LAN network. The two WANs are setup for failover. However, QoS has recently been an issue for skype calls in our office place (about 30 people) so we want to dedicate WAN2 for skype traffic (we use skype for all voip calls, etc.) As Skype is notoriously difficult to deal with, does anyone have any suggestions on how I should deal with this?   • Routing all Traffic through OpenVPN Tunnel

    I have installed OpenVPN server on Archlinux and am now using OpenVPN GUI on Windows 7, I can talk to other computers connected through the VPN but I have not yet figured out how to route all traffic through the tunnel. How do I do this? I figured I need to do it with route ( cmd command ) but I think i need some pointers here. I've followed the OpenVPN HowTo on the matter but that doesn't work, it simply doesn't push the "force the client to go through this gateway"-option. And changing from OpenVPN to a PPTP / IPSec alternative is not an option at the moment.

  • CORAID using only 1 of the 2 available NICs for AoE traffic

    We got 6 CORAID shelves in my workplace. On 2 of them I see AoE traffic on only 1 of the 2 NICs that are attached to the SAN switch. We got jumbo frames enabled on all devices. Both NICs show up when I issue the aoe-interfaces command. This wouldn't bother me too much if the throughput performance observed on the "bad" shelves using bonnie++ wasn't half of the result of the "good" shelves. The "good" shelves are older SR1521 model and they have ReiserFS on their LUNS - not that I think it makes a difference - and the "bad" shelves are newer SR2421 model and have JFS. Any help as to what is going on and how to rectify this would be greatly appreciated. BTW: even the lower performing shelves outperform another iSCSI device we got, but that is another story... Thanks.

    Hi all, We are currently reviewing the bandwidth of our WAN links. How much bandwidth does a "typical" Citrix session utilize over a WAN link? JFYI - we are using Citrix Program Neighborhood V10 and each session is configured to use 256 colors. I have set up PRTG and it appears that for a server hosting 4 users, the traffic is approximately 100k to 300k per session. Is that about right? If you had to set a benchmark on a per-user basis, how much bandwidth would you assign to each user? Thanks in advance.

    For a generic filter to exclude all traffic in my dump that is between private IP address, I came up with the following: sudo tcpdump -n ' (not ( (src net 172.16.0.0/20 or src net 10.0.0.0/8 or src net 192.168.0.0/16) and (dst net 172.16.0.0/20 or dst net 10.0.0.0/8 or dst net 192.168.0.0/16) ) ) and (not ( (dst net 172.16.0.0/20 or dst net 10.0.0.0/8 or dst net 192.168.0.0/16) and (src net 172.16.0.0/20 or src net 10.0.0.0/8 or src net 192.168.0.0/16) ) )' -w test2.dump Seems pretty excessive, but it also seems to work, is this filter a lot longer than it needs to be and there is better way to express this logic, or is there anything wrong with the filter?

  • Tunneling traffic through two VPN hops/tunnels.

    I am a web developer, and I find myself often working from home. But when I do, I am forced to Remote Desktop to the Office desktop computer and work from there. The reason is because the application I am working on needs to connect to servers at a Data Center via a VPN from the Office Desktop. HomeDesktop (Win7) --- PVN --- OfficeDesktop(WinXP) --- VPN --- Data Center What I would really like to do is, I would like to find a way to be using my Home desktop developing on that, and whenever my computer tries to access servers on the Data Center, I would like to tunnel that traffic through the two VPN tunnels separating me and the Data Center. I have admin privileges on both Office Desktop and Home Desktop, but I do not have any admin privileges in the Data Center. So what kind of tunneling solution could I use here? Is it even possible?
