  • Best way to get free driving instructions

    Is there a simple way to get driving instructions? Something like: I call "http://someservice/?start=NYC&target=Washington" and then the service returns a XML file containing routing information? Has anybody ever tried to access such a web-based service from a standalone desktop application? Any help would really be appreciated! Update: Thanks for the hints, but unfortunately I can't run JavaScript. Is there still a possibility to receive driving instructions?

  • HTML-like GUI Framework in Java

    I was recently brought onto a project where we are developing a lot GUI elements for BlackBerry devices. The standard RIM APIs are pretty basic, almost never do what is required and are difficult or impossible to extend, so we end up re-implementing chunks of it. Currently the code we have isn't super organized and factored so there are lots of little tricks that get implemented over and over again. I had a thought about how to aid development efforts on this platform and wanted to see if the community could tell me if I'm still sane or if I've gone totally nuts. By far, the biggest organizational problem I've run into is making sure that each screen is laid out properly with proper padding and such. The current approach is to manually keep track of padding like so: protected void sublayout(int width, int height) { final int padding = 5; int y = padding; int x = padding; layoutChild(_someChild, width - padding * 2, height / 3 - padding * 2); setPositionChild(_someChild, x, y); y += _someChild.getHeight() + padding; // Calculate where to start drawing next. /* ... snipped ... */ } As you can see, positioning elements on a screen is a nightmare due to the tedium. I have investigated other GUI frameworks but, for a variety of reasons, it is difficult to find one that suites our purposes. One potential solution that came to me is to create a GUI framework who's API resembles HTML/CSS. This would allow for things like padding, margins, borders and colours to be handled through a sort of CSS API while the content would be organized using the HTML part of the API. It might look something like this: public class OptionsScreen extends Document { public OptionsScreen() { // You would set the style (like CSS style) through the constructor.     I'm developing a communication API to be used by a lot of generic clients to communicate with a proprietary system. This proprietary system exposes an API, and I use a particular classes to send and wait messages from this system: obviously the system alert me that a message is ready using an event. The event is named OnMessageArrived. My idea is to expose a simple SendSyncMessage(message) method that helps the user/client to simply send a message and the method returns the response. As soon as the event arrived, checks if the message is the one I expect (checking the unique guid), otherwise continues to wait for the next event. This because could be (and usually is in this way) a lot of clients working concurrently, and I want them to work parallel. As I implemented my stuff, at the moment if I run client 1, client 2 and client 3, client 2 starts sending message as soon as client 1 has finished, and client 3 as client 2 has finished: not what I'm trying to do.   • Google map blank when used with master page

    I wrote a google map lookup page. Everthing worked fine until I referenced the page to use a master page. I removed the form tag from the master page as the search button on the map page is a submit button. Everything else on my page appears but the google map div appears with map navigation controls and logo but no map visuals appear. I retested with the previous, non master page version and the map appears correctly. Any thoughts on what I'm missing?

    Hi Guys, I'm constructing a geolocation based application and I'm trying to figure out a way to make my application realise when a user is facing the direction of the given location (a particular long / lat co-ord). I've got the math figured, I just have the triangle to construct. Here's a further clarification of what I want to do.. I just want to know is there a way to get java to construct 2 other co-ordinates based on my orientation in relation to true north and my current co-ordinate? I'd like to construct a tri-angle, 45 degrees out each way of my current location (one of the points) and 1 kilometer in that direction. The problem is I don't know how to make Android/Java recognise that I want to find that point in the direction I'm currently facing.. Anyone got any ideas?

    I am using wordpress as a CMS and trying to allow user fields to be input to populate the info windows in a Google Map script. I looked at htmlspcialchar and htmlentities but rather than strip everything out I would like to have it escaped so it still works and the html is intact. Any suggestions? I am pretty new to PHP and would really appreciate any pointers.

    Hi everyone, I'd like to know (from a high level view) what would be required to take a pdf floor plan of a building and determine where exactly you are on that floor plan using GPS coordinates? In addition to location, the user would be presented with a "turn by turn" directions to another point on the map, navigating down hallways, between cubicles, etc. Use case: an iPhone app that determined a user's location and guided them to a conference room or person's office in the building. Button anandabutton = (Button) findViewById(R.id.anandaAddressButton); anandabutton.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() { public void onClick(View view) { Intent myIntent = new Intent(view.getContext(),MapClass.class); startActivityForResult(myIntent,0); } }); This method opens up my MapClass class which at the moment I just have set to show the location of one place. But I have a load of buttons and rather than making a lot of different mapClass classes for each button, I am wondering can I just use the one class and depending on what button 'id' is pressed, it will check an 'if statement' and then put in the correct coordinates into the method to display the map. It would be a lot neater than coding up like 20-30 classes. I'm not sure if i've explained that right so if not let me know. Thanks for any help.

    Hello, my Question is as follows: What does GEvent.addListener(map, "click" function(){...}) return into the callback function? I don't find any information in the GMaps reference at all, can you show me some? The only thing I found out was that there are two parameters, "overlay" and "latLng" that are passed. The name of these parameters should not be of interest right? I could also name them "foo" and "bar" as far as I know. But the parameter "overlay" seems to be empty anyway? Also I have problems passing these two parameters directly into a callback function I created myself which looks like that... GEvent.addListener(gmap, "click", generateMarker(overlay, latLng)); ... instead of writing the following, which actually works fine.     I'm getting some problems trying Google Geocoding service when using special characters like "º" or letters with accents. Whenever I try something like: "barcelona, nº 10" I get 0 results. But trying: "barcelona n 10" I get results... I suspect is something related with encoding. I tried this: geocoder.geocode({'address': encodeURI( $('#direction').val() )}, function(){} ); But didn't help. Any Idea?
