• How to run Windows 7 Explorer shell with Administrator Privileges by default

  The Windows 7 shell (Explorer) can be made to run with Administrator privileges by this manual process: Kill Explorer shell by holding down Shift+Ctrl, right-clicking the Shut down button in the Start Menu, and selecting Exit Explorer Start Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc Elevate Task Manager privileges by going to Processes tab and selecting Show processes from all users Then start up a new instance of the shell by File | Run in Task Manager, typing in explorer, and selecting the Create this task with administrative privileges. After following the above process, the Windows shell will be running with administrative privileges, and any programs it launches will also have administrative privileges. This makes performing tasks that require the privilege far easier, particularly for command-line applications, which usually fail silently or with an Access denied. message rather than giving an opportunity to use UAC to elevate the process's privileges. What I'm interested in, though, is creating an account which uses a privileged shell by default, rather than having to follow this laborious process every time. How can it be done?

• Disable ability to add startup items in Windows 7?

  Note: This is not the question "How to disable startup items" because the simple answer is: "Use msconfig". Now as for my question: I recently am very annoyed that some programs add startup items to my PC without my knowledge after installation, I always have 2 programs which startup - Temperature monitor and the Catalyst Control Center Tray. Now, sometimes I install something and it adds startup entries, how can I make sure that no startup entries can be added to windows anymore? So what I would like to do: -Disable adding scheduled tasks (even for administrator accounts, so programs installing from them can't add startup entries too) -Disable adding startup entries to the registry (even for administrators, would changing the permissions in HKLM on the Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run to read only be enough?) -Disable all other methods of startup in Windows 7 I don't know -Set default startup of NEW installed services to "Start Manually" instead of/and block "Start Automaticly" and "Start Automaticly (Delayed)" How can I accomplish this? This is also a nice way to prevent most viruses fom running after machine reboot (if this can be accomplished).

• virt-viewer slower than virt-manager when viewing

  I've got a thin client server in which I have a few VM's for users under KVM which I manage through virt-manager. What I've noticed is if I start a VM guest on a thin client using the command 'virt-viewer ' then the guest is painfully slow to move around. However if on the same thin client I start the same guest VM through virt-manager it's fast. What are the differences here? Can I start a VM without having the user load up virt-manager and double click on their VM? Should I be looking at using splice in virt-viewer instead of VNC which is what I currently use?

• Running Mac OSX 10.6 my users home directory is wrong

  Somehow my home directory on my mac machine has been changed and I'm not sure how to go about changing it back, I'm more of a linux guy and mac has some other mechanism for storing that information. Basically when I log into the machine normally than start a terminal window. I start in the /Users/erik_miller directory, which is my home directory, but when I run some this like cd ~ The machine tries to change to /Users/erik_miller. Yes, the same path with a period on the end. I can change my $HOME environment variable for the session, but the next time I start the machine it reverts. So, I think if I can find where that information is stored I can just change it there and hopefully all will be well.

• More than 3 seconds "Initial Connection" time (webpagetest.org)

  I'm having a weird issue with a vBulletin forum, on a 2? Xeon E5645 w/ 16GB RAM, cPanel and LiteSpeed webserver; It takes too long to start loading... When I tested it with webpagetest.org I saw that for every request there's a 3 second "Initial connection" delay, which I don't know why is happening. Here's a screenshot: CPU Load is between 0.03 and 0.05, I've got several GB of free RAM, practical no I/O activity, and this delay can occur even with only one visitor on the forum. Where do you suggest I start searching? What could be the reason for this kind of delay? I don't think it's the webserver, or the forum because there's another website on the server (total 2 sites) which is WordPress based, and has exactly the same issue with the 3 second initial connection delay. I believe it's OS related, but need a clue on where to start looking. Thanks in advance :)

• How to prevent recursive windows when connecting to vncserver on localhost

  I have a VNCServer (vino) configured on my Ubuntu 8.10 box. I would like to connect to this server from a vncclient running on this same machine (the reason for doing this strange thing is mentioned below). Understandably, when I connect to a vncserver on the same box, my vncclient shows recursive windows. Is there a way I can connect to the vncserver on the same machine and not have the recursive windows problem? Perhaps if I could start the vncserver on one display and the client on another display then will it work? How can I do something like this? Note - Reason for running vnc client and server on the same machine: When I start our Java Swing unit test suite, a bunch of swing UI's are created and destroyed as the tests run. These windows fly in the foreground making it impossible to work while the test suite is running. I am hoping to start the test suite within a vncclient so that I can continue working while the tests run.

  Bit of a noob question. I have downloaded MongoDb and installed it here /Users/mike/downloads/mongodb In order to start it, I then have to 'cd' into the 'bin' /Users/mike/downloads/mongodb/bin and run ./mongod (to start the database) and ./mongo (to start the mongo shell) The problem is that I can only work with python and ruby scripts using the mongo shell if I have those scripts stored in the same bin directory, and I don't think that's the ideal set up. Will exporting the path allow me to access mongo from outside the bin? For example, I would prefer to have my ruby scripts in /sites/ruby and be able to access mongo by starting ruby in /sites/ruby. If exporting to path is the solution, how do I do that. I'm using a mac

Only windows knows that it has to substitute port numbers coz these are standard ports? Is there way I could create such a named port on windows? • Plugin 'InnoDB' registration as a STORAGE ENGINE failed. On win 7

  I have had to reinstall MySQL, however the service is failing to start with the above cause listed in evnt viewer. One solution is apparently to delete a couple of files prefixed with 'ib_logfile' which represent any old databases. However I do not have these files, and my service is still failing to start ... ? When I say I don't have these files I did a search using the windows search with zero results, and they are definitely not present in my mysql install directory. And I don't have the "documents and setting/appilcation data' folder referenced in link. In fact I only have only one mysql install directory, I know where that is - what do I need to delete/change ? The instance is configured OK, I ran that as administrator and it is listed in services, but the service itself fails to start Any tips, other than going over to postgresql ?

• Windows Security Center Service is missing

  I am trying to fix a Windows 7 machine here that has been infected with all kinds of Malware. I have removed all of them as far as I can see but I am stumped by one last task. One little bugger managed to remove the Windows Security Center service from the list of Windows services. So I cannot start it or set to automatically start. At the moment I cannot get the Windows firewall to turn on or any anti-virus software. The security center shows the following image when I try: Does anyone know how to add this back to the list of services so I may set it to start.   I'm trying to configure port forwarding for Apache 2.2 installed on Windows XP SP3 with ZTE ZXV10 W300 router. The computer has a static IP 192.168.1.2. I'm not sure but it's said they flash routers with modified firmware. I have also tried to set up Bitcomet port forwarding on port 13514 and failed.

• Recover RAID 5 data after created new array instead of re-using

  Folks please help - I am a newb with a major headache at hand (perfect storm situation). I have a 3 1tb hdd on my ubuntu 11.04 configured as software raid 5. The data had been copied weekly onto another separate off the computer hard drive until that completely failed and was thrown away. A few days back we had a power outage and after rebooting my box wouldn't mount the raid. In my infinite wisdom I entered mdadm --create -f... command instead of mdadm --assemble and didn't notice the travesty that I had done until after. It started the array degraded and proceeded with building and syncing it which took ~10 hours. After I was back I saw that that the array is successfully up and running but the raid is not I mean the individual drives are partitioned (partition type f8 ) but the md0 device is not. Realizing in horror what I have done I am trying to find some solutions. I just pray that --create didn't overwrite entire content of the hard driver. Could someone PLEASE help me out with this - the data that's on the drive is very important and unique ~10 years of photos, docs, etc. Is it possible that by specifying the participating hard drives in wrong order can make mdadm overwrite them? when I do mdadm --examine --scan I get something like ARRAY /dev/md/0 metadata=1.2 UUID=f1b4084a:720b5712:6d03b9e9:43afe51b name=<hostname>:0 Interestingly enough name used to be 'raid' and not the host hame with :0 appended.   I tried building node.js on cygwin and that caused errors, so someone in #node.js on freenode told me to run rebaseall on cygwin to clean it up. So I tried that and I got the following message: $ rebaseall rebaseall: only ash or dash processes are allowed during rebasing Exit all Cygwin processes and stop all Cygwin services. Execute ash (or dash) from Start/Run... or a cmd or command window. Execute '/bin/rebaseall' from ash (or dash). So I closed cygwin, went to Start/Run and tried ash and dash but got the following alert: Windows cannot find 'ash'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search. So what am I supposed to do??

• Linux/Gentoo: KDM, startx & session problem

  I'm using startx in my .bashrc file to start X (I'm using KDE 4.3.4) when I login at tty1 instead of using a display manager like KDM. Now the problem is since KDM is not running I'm not able to use the shut down button from the KDE menu (because it needs root privileges to do so, of course) and some other features are gone as well. Is there a way to start KDM when I run startx in my .bashrc, like just running KDM in the background? The point is that I want no login display, so I'm sure there must be a way to just start KDM silently. Regards & I hope for answers!

• Prevent IIS7 HTTPS from binding to all SSL IP addresses

  I've had this interesting problem with IIS7. I have a number of HTTPS sites in IIS7. That hasn't been a problem, until I wanted to go and set up VisualSVN Server using an SSL certificate. The installer had trouble starting the service. When I looked in the event log, the error was that "the file is already in use by another process." I figured that the "file" was really a socket, and checked with netstat - even though IIS was only bound to three specific IP addresses (.160, .156, and .168) with port 443, it was consuming *:443. I could stop the World Wide Web Publishing Service, start VisualSVN, and then start IIS, but then none of my SSL servers would start. Any helpful hints about how I could make IIS not try to default-bind to *:443? Thanks!!

• Starting x11vnc remotely when X server is already running

  I have a ubuntu linux machine that I have already logged into and X server is running (it is pass the login manager like gdm). I can access this machine through ssh. My goal is to start x11vnc on this machine and attach it to the X server that is already running. When I ssh into the machine and start x11vnc, it says: X11 was unable to open the X DISPLAY ":0", it cannot continue. How can I start x11vnc on the remote machine if I don't have physical access to it and Xserver has already started.   Hi i have a java application that starts/stops/restart Apache and it should also check for its status, so i have looked how checking for status of apache and it appears that you have to check for the state of the service, problem is that when i use apachectl start the service httpd is still not started, is that normal ? i check for the service state by doing service httpd status . • How to Install PCRE Development Headers on Mac OSX

  I just upgraded my MacBook Pro to Mavericks and my local Ruby on Rails development environment isn't running straight off the bat, when I visit localhost I see It works! and remembered I needed to start Phusion Passenger, so when I run passenger start it checks all the requisites and fails when it gets to the PCRE Development Headers: * Checking for PCRE development headers... Found: no It tells me to go to http://www.pcre.org/ to download them so I downloaded 8.33 from here which went to my Downloads folder, so I unzipped it, cd'd to the folder and ran: ./configure make make install Then cd'd back to my rails app directory on my Desktop and re-ran passenger start but it's still the same. Tried a new Terminal window but that didn't make any difference. I must have done this before to get my dev environment working but can't seem to solve it this time. I also tried brew install pcre but it says Warning: pcre-8.33 already installed.

• rc.local is not executed on bootup ubuntu

  Im on Ubuntu 10.04. I want to execute script on system boot. I added it to rc.local. If I execute rc.local manually it works fine. If I boot system in recovery mode(2nd string in boot menu) it also works fine. But if I boot normally it is not executed. However i added sleep 20 to my script and there is a pause at the end of boot process, but nothing more is executed.
