• Download file from vbscript?

  I need a script that can be run on freshly installed windows xp+ and download specified files from internet, like http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.6.2/python-2.6.2.msi Is it any easy way to do it without hand-crafting HTTP/FTP requests or using third-party programs like wget? I can suggest that WScript.CreateObject("internetexplorer.application") will do the magic, but documentation on it is extremely huge and Google is silent, as always :).

• RHEL 5 list missing critical patches/packages

  Im trying to figure out if there is an easy way to identify the missing critical patches/packages on my RHEL5 boxes. This is for audit purposes and was trying to figure out if there was an RPM command or something of the sort that would accomplish this easily. I know with my Solaris 10 boxes, i can run the "smpatch analyze" command which would display this information for me. Anyone know of anything similar for RHEL5? Thanks.

• Adding default command line options when opening a particular filetype

  I'd like to make it so that whenever I open a particular file type (by double clicking it in explorer) it always opens the associated program with particular command line options. So, for example, when double clicking a .tex file I want it to not only open it with emacs (which is easy to set up just by going into "Open With"), but run emacs with the command line option "-fs".   someone showed me a really quick way to get folders off an ftp site via the shell on a Mac using the command "wget -r ftp://" (then the address of the ftp site folder location) and it would download to whatever folder i was in, keeping all the sub directories the same as the ftp site seemed really quick and easy, but how do i do a similar thing on a PC?

• WinSCP clobbers permission & group on replace

  Is there a way to tell winscp to keep the group and permission of my upload file? I am tired of modifying webpages/webapp binaries and needing to change the group to www-data so the server can read them. If not what app might i use instead? I mostly use winscp for the easy of copy/pasting files onto my linux server and the ease of browsing the filesystem (can go between 2+ folders in a second, no typos)

• 403 error with codeignitor

  When I type in the standard web address for my site, I get a 403 error. However, when I type in a more exact address, say pointing to an index.php file, everything shows up fine. I'm using Anodyne Productions' Nova (SMS 3) which uses codeignitor. All accompanying software (PHP/MySQL) is compatible. I'm not a very technical person, so I'm hoping that this is an easy fix.   I'd like to mirror a site with wget and convert all the links to the local copies I've downloaded. So far that's easy all I have to do is wget -mk http://site.com However all of the static media is located in a different domain, if I follow all of the foreign hosts using the -H option it will download that static media files, but it will also download anything else externally linked. Is there a way to specify 'only download foreign hosts specified in list X'?

• How to map to Windows Server shares in Linux (Ubuntu) easily?

  I know how to get connected to a Windows share easy enough, and I've read how to change the fstab file to get it to mount at boot. The real question here is...can I create a few shortcuts on a common user desktop so that regardless of who logs into Ubuntu machine they can open that shortcut and it will open the Windows share? I would also need to allow AD credentials during login, so a link to that will help as well, but I'm sure I can search google for that part.
