• where should I put the EF entity and data annotations in asp.net mvc + entity framework project

  So I have a DataEntity class generated by EntityFramework4 for my sqlexpress08 database. This data context is exposed via a WCF Data Service/Odata to silverlight and win forms clients. Should the data entities + edmx file (generated by EF4) go in a separate class library? The problem here then is I would specify data annotations for a few entities and then some of them would require specific MVC attributes (like CompareAttribute) so the class library would also reference mvc dlls. There also happen to be entity users which will be encapsulated or wrapped into an IIdentity in the website. So its pretty tied to the mvc website. Or Should it maybe go in a Base folder in the mvc project itself? Mostly the website is data driven around the database, like approve users, change global settings etc. The real business happens in the silverlight and win forms apps. Im using mvc3 rc2 with Razor. • Exposing APIs - third party or homegrown?

  Parts of the project I'm currently working on (I can't give details) will be exposed as an API at some point over the next few months and I was wondering whether anyone could recommend a third party API 'provider' (possibly Mashery or SO advertiser Webservius). And I mean recommend in the 'I've used these people and they are good' sense because although I can google for an answer to this question it is more difficult to get truly unbiased opinions. As an addendum is there much mileage in creating a bespoke API solution and has anyone had any joy going down that road? Thanks in anticipation.

• Synchronization between hibernate running locally and on a server

  Is there an easy way using a library to facilitate the synchronization of two hibernate instances. One running locally on a client and one running on a central server exposed via a web service. So Client tracks changes it makes, pushes them to the Server. The server ensures that the clients is not updating out of sync objects and stores the clients changes. The Client can also sync with the Server so that it can see the changes made by other clients. The idea is that the client can be run offline, without access to the server and only come online to synchronize when needed.

  If I am walking through an IEnumerable<T>, is there any way to get a new IEnumerable<T> representing the remaining items after the current one. For example, I would like to write an extension method IEnumerator<T>.Remaining(): IEnumerable<int> sequence = ... IEnumerator<int> enumerator = sequence.GetEnumerator(); if (enumerator.MoveNext() && enumerator.MoveNext()) { IEnumerable<int> rest = enumerator.Remaining(); // 'rest' would contain elements in 'sequence' start at the 3rd element } I'm thinking of the collection of a sort of singly-linked list, so there should be a way to represent any remaining elements, right? I don't see any way to do this exposed on either IEnumerable<T> or IEnumerator<T>, so maybe it's incompatible with the notion of a potentially unbounded, nondeterministic sequence of elements.

• Using asp.net mvc model binders generically

  I have a hierarchy of classes that all derive from a base type and the base type also implements an interface. What I'm wanting to do is have one controller to handle the management of the entire hierarchy (as the actions exposed via the controller is identical). That being said, I want to have the views have the type specific fields on it and the model binder to bind against a hidden field value. something like: <input type="text" name="model.DerivedTypeSpecificField" /> <input type="hidden" name="modelType" value="MyDerivedType" /> That being said, the asp.net mvc model binders seem to require the concrete type that they will be creating, because of that reason I would need to create a different controller for every derived type. Has anyone does this before or know how to manipulate the model binder to behave in this way? I could write my own model binder, but I'm not wanting anything past the basic model binding behavior of assign properties and building arrays on the target type. Thanks!

  Is there a way to get a list of the exposed functions from a Flash object? For example, you could get a list of all methods in an object by executing: for (var i in object) { if (typeof object[i] == "function") { console.log(i); } } The only issue is that this won't expose any methods registered through the ExternalInterfaces API. I can try and see if the function exists (object['method']) and it tells me it is a function, but I would have to guess every existing method in this manner. NOTE: Obviously, I don't have access to the actionscript.

• Should my internal API classes be all in one package?

  I'm hard at work packaging up an API for public consumption. As such I'm trying to limit the methods that are exposed to only those that I wish to be public and supportable. Underneath this of course there are a multitude of limited access methods. The trouble is that I have a lot of internal code that needs to access these restricted methods without making those methods public. This creates two issues: I can't create interfaces to communicate between classes as this would make these my internal methods public. I can't access protected or default methods unless I put the majority of my internal classes in the same package. So, I have around 70 or 80 internal classes in cleanly segregated packages BUT with overly permissive access modifiers. Would you say that a single package is the lesser of two evils or is there a better way to be able to mask my internal methods whilst keeping more granular packages? I'd be interested to find out the best practice here. I'm already aware of This

I’ve read that by decorating the WebMethod with a unique name, both functions should be exposed in the service metadata. This isn’t working. What am I missing?

• How can I utilize or mimic Application OnStart in an HttpModule?

  We are trying to remove the global.asax from our many web applications in favor of HttpModules that are in a common code base. This works really well for many application events such as BeginRequest and PostAuthentication, but there is no Application Start event exposed in the HttpModule. I can think of a couple of smelly ways to overcome this deficit. • Consuming Third Party web services through Spring WebServiceTemplate

  I'm trying to consume a Third Party web service, through a wsdl file provided. I would load the file locally from a Spring-J2EE based project underneath WEB-INF folder. The wsdl might have more than one operation exposed. So I need a way to be able to choose the method to be called. I would also need to make use of a JaxbMarshaller. • Visual Studio - easy way to bring up type definition as source code

  Oftentimes I want to bring up a system class in a source view, so that I can browse the properties and methods exposed by the class in a source view. Below is the screenshot of what I mean: Usually I do this by selecting the class name and pressing F12 (or right clickGo To Definition). However, if I haven't got it anywhere ready, i have type it up and then do Go To Definition. Most of the time I have to delete what I typed later on. Is there a way to bring up this view without having to type the class name? The VS2010 Navigate To dialog doesn't support this.

  Hi All, I'm sure we've all been exposed over the past few days to the delights of the vuvuzela (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8738604.stm). In an attempt to mask the waspish 'parp' from our living rooms, tv sound engineers are devising all sorts of filters to try and 'calm' the abhoration :). some tho say that it simply 'adds to the ambience' and that masking it out would be a denial of its 'additive' character. Now, on a programming related front, have you had to mask any extraneous 'noise' in a piece of work that you've picked up from someone else (or perhaps even your own!!)?? If so how 'inspired' was your remedy and how did you creatively 'reverse' it out once the noise had subsided and/or the pitch changed. :) tongue firmly in cheek... jim

I have a WPF application, in each of my usercontrols / windows I am currently putting the following code in xaml in the header... xmlns:properties="clr-namespace:MaxCut2.Properties" This particular properties namespace I use in every window / usercontrol in my project and I would have thought that if I had put the code in my App.xaml, it would have been exposed to all the child windows/uc's - but it doesn't seem to work. Is there a way that I can expose this without having to declare it in every file in XAML?

I am a software developer and I have written and exposed a Service on HTTPS at port 8000. Now i want to know that if there is any kind of software that can help me to trace if there is any kind of port blocking from one site to my service location with information of blocker host. I have tried couple of Tracerout software like wintrace but all these uses ICMP protocols and there is no option to provide port number in them. And moreover i like to ad an exception in Firewall for incoming ICMP protocal in windows server 2003 windows firewall but i can't see anyoption to ad protocol in exception instead there are only options to ad a program or ad a port of udp or tcp. • Using PUT/POST/DELETE with JSONP and jQuery

  I am working on creating a RESTful API that supports cross-domain requests, JSON/JSONP support, and the main HTTP method (PUT/GET/POST/DELETE). Now while will be easy to accessing this API through server side code , it would nice to exposed it to javascript. From what I can tell, when doing a JSONP requests with jQuery, it only supports the GET method. Is there a way to do a JSONP request using POST/PUT/DELETE? Ideally I would like a way to do this from within jQuery (through a plugin if the core does not support this), but I will take a plain javascript solution too. Any links to working code or how to code it would be helpful, thanks.

I would like to write an SNMP client for these applications that wraps the JMX interface and by discovery exposes the same attributes that are exposed in JMX, through SNMP. I have no problem writing the client if I just figure out how to write SNMP clients in JAVA. Is there a free SNMP library for JAVA that I can use? Is there a good free SNMP adapter for JMX? This has exposed the bizarre web of dependencies left behind by the previous project maintainer. What I'd like to be able to do is to add a specific path in the project to require's list of paths to be searched, aka $:. However, I only want that path to be searched in the context of one particular method. • How to add .Net3.5 dll into .Net2.0 project?

  I have a dll which is based on .net 3.5 -- it uses internally for example Linq, but the exposed API is straightforward, no fancy stuff. Since C# generics are resolved at compile time I assume that for calling party all it counts is API (all public parts). However when I try to use this dll from net2.0 project I get info, that the dll cannot be referenced because the dll or one of its dependencies requires a later version of .net framework. I can install any .net version I want on target computer (when entire app is installed), but I cannot change .net version for the project itself. So: how to solve this? When adding a C dll to this project I had no such problems, so are C# dlls self-contained or not?

• What is the best way to maintain an entity's original properties when they are not included in MVC binding from edit page?

  I have an ASP.NET MVC view for editing a model object. The edit page includes most of the properties of my object but not all of them -- specifically it does not include CreatedOn and CreatedBy fields since those are set upon creation (in my service layer) and shouldn't change in the future. Unless I include these properties as hidden fields they will not be picked up during Binding and are unavailable when I save the modified object in my EF 4 DB Context. In actuality, upon save the original values would be overwritten by nulls (or some type-specific default). I don't want to drop these in as hidden fields because it is a waste of bytes and I don't want those values exposed to potential manipulation. Is there a "first class" way to handle this situation? Is it possible to specify a EF Model property is to be ignored unless explicitly set?

I Have a datacontext that has a "getuserbyguid" method, i want to pass in the current logged in user.userid as a parameter, but I don't know how to bind to the current logged in user through xaml. I've tried {Binding Path=User.UserId} but without any luck. I'm using the built in riaservices authentication methods, so the userinfo should be exposed in the riacontext, or am I wrong about this?   Hi all I am developing a library and a would like to provide my users a public interface separate from the real implementatino that is hidden in a namespace. This way, I could change only the class HiddenQueue without changing myQueue that will be exposed to users only. If I put the C++ code of HiddenQueue in the myQueue.cpp file the compiler complains saying _innerQueue has incomplete type. I thought that the linker was able to resolve this. What I am doing wrong here? • URL of the website calling Restlet API

  I have a Restlet API and the methods exposed on it are called by a PHP web app. This web app is accessible by several domain names and depending on the domain certain aspects of the app are changed (look and feel, content etc). Is there a way for Restlet to determine the URL of the calling web app? I have used getReference() but all I can get is the (internal) IP address of the calling web server (not the domain name). My only other alternative is to pass the URL of the web app with every request to the API but it would be cleaner if Restlet already knew. Thanks

• What is a good practice for handling SQL connections within a WCF call?

  Suppose I want to create a (stateless) WCF service with three methods exposed on an endpoint: performSqlOperationA(), performSqlOperationB(), and performSqlOperationC(). Each method inserts data into a SQL database. The way I've seen things done at my office, each method would begin with code to initialize a SqlConnection object. Each method would end with code to safely dispose it. What is a good practice for coding these WCF methods so that the SqlConnection object is initialized and disposed in each method without having to do these things in each method? I know that I can have the connection initialized in the constructor for the class for the WCF methods, but I don't know about disposing it... The calls cannot be wrapped in a using block. One solution I'm familiar with is PostSharp, which allows me to set an attribute which causes specific code to automatically run at the beginning and end of each method call, but it would be greatly preferable to do this with only the .net framework.
