• Screensaver does not activate properly [closed]

  I do not know if this is a known feature/bug in Unity, and I am also unaware of how else to report bug-related things. I was listening to some music using banshee. My services was called upon (My SO wanted me to help with the dishes) so I clicked on the sound icon and paused the music. I left the sound icon menu open. When I came back much later, the screensaver had not yet activated. Once I closed the menu, the screensaver immediately kicked in. I am assuming that this kind of behavior is not intended. This is also easily reproducible for anyone. Has anyone else experienced this kind of behavior? Is this a (known) bug?

• Would you consider using training/mentoring from LearnersParadise.com?

  My initial question deserves some explanation. I signed up for an account at learnersparadise.com. After signing up I couldn't login so I opted to use their "send password" feature. Upon receiving my password in my email I confirmed two things A) They trimmed off 2 of the last digits of my 10-digit password without informing me and saved it that way in their database B) my password is not saved in their database using a one-way hash since they were able to email me my password. I'm quite certain that both of these are perfectly awful programming practices. I suspect that the mentors/trainers at learnersparadise are not necessarily affiliated with the website and it's design since they are basically people like you and me (hopefully more skill than me) who have signed up to become mentors. However, I'm still uncertain about signing up for training/mentoring at a site that uses such poor programming practices themselves? Would you let learnersparadise poor programming practices affect your opinion of their trainers/mentors?

  JavaFX 2.2.3 and JDK 7u9 were released today. In addition to the release documentation, the following new information is provided: Learn about some of the "behind the scenes" work for an application, such as threads, events, and binding with the new learning trail on the landing page. Learn how to use cell editors with the List View component. The new example in the UI Controls tutorial shows how to build a list of names by selecting them from a combo box. • I Need a recommendation for a CMS application with ECommerce

  Does anyone have any recommendation for an open source solution for a robust CMS application that has a fully featured ECommerce module? I have been looking into Drupal with Ubercart -- but it looks like Ubercart is not fully up to speed with Drupal 7, and the other modules for Ecommerce don't look as robust. The CMS system should support CMIS as both client and server, and be able to run in a cloud computing environment. The system could be written in any standard web programming language, although Java would be my preference. I'm posting this question here because it seems that all CMS systems provide ECommerce as an afterthought, rather than a core feature.

• Simple alternating text in Visual Basic 2008

  I have a simple completed program, but i would like to add one more feature to it but I'm not sure how. I have it set up to send a message automatically every 7 seconds when a text field is selected, repeating the message of course. What I would like for it to do is alternate between two separate messages, instead just repeating the one. I would like the new program to post at an interval of 12 seconds. Can you help me? • Printing in booklet fomat

  In the past I had a printer that had the booklet format option that would print the document two pages at a time ordered in a way that folding the whole printout would produce a booklet which could be stapled in the middle. My current printer does not support this feature. I would like to use some utility or script to convert an A4 pdf to an A5 booklet one. I found this page but I'm getting an error : pdfjam ERROR: can't find pdflatex! How do I get past this issue? Does anybody know of any other solution? I'm on Ubuntu 12.10 AMD64

  "Web Intents" were deprecated in Chrome 24 (November/2011) and are no longer supported in any browser: We also gathered a lot of valuable data and feedback from our experimental support for Web Intents and decided to disable the feature in today's Beta release. Is there an HTML5 standard that I can look into as an alternative to what Web Intents intended? I'm interested in how web services can be stitched together. For example, imagine a website that can import a image from any number of web-services, modify the image in some way, then push the file back to any number of other web-services, all via HTML5 standards.

• Editing XML Literals Embedded Expressions in Visual Basic 2010 (Avner Aharoni)

  The implicit line continuation feature in Visual Basic 2010 provided an opportunity to improve the code editing experience in XML literals embedded expressions. In Visual Studio 2008, pressing Enter inside an embedded expression would result in the cursor being positioned to the left of the end embedded expression tag. In Visual Studio 2010, pressing Enter inserts a newline for the cursor, and the end embedded expression tag moves to the line below. • WPF Alphabet (Available for download)

• BeanInfo Editor in NetBeans Rocks

  Impressed by a cool feature I didn't know about. If you have some JavaBean, like my Event class below, you can right-click it and choose "BeanInfo Editor": Now, as you can see above, I don't have a BeanInfo class. So I am now asked whether the IDE should create one for me. So I say OK and then I have a new BeanInfo class, generated from my Event class, as well as a multiview editor for visually editing the BeanInfo class: Thanks Eric and Nicklas from Artificial Solutions in Stockholm for pointing this out to me today. It comes in very handy in NetBeans Platform applications when you're working with a BeanNode and want to customize the display of your properties.

• The new Google Analytics - what new useful features have you found?

  If you don't know already a new version of Google Analytics has just come out. On first initial views it doesn't seem like much of an improvement on the previous version. There's lot's linking to Google's social stats but I'm yet to see the value of that. Also it doesn't seem to make the best use of the important data, it's tending to push referral sites, keywords to the back and bring the less important data to the front. Is that a sign of things to come??? One feature I did find interesting was the visitors flow as it shows the visitors path through your site. What new features have you found useful/interesting?

• No Grapical log in or anything just terminal code!!

  I just install the unity alpha state 3, and i came across two errors, one stating it could not install a desktop feature or so and the other just had some errors that i had snap shot the error. When it says it was complete I restarted it and after it booted up, i see a long line of boot codes and then it stop with log in name and the after i put my log in name it ask for a password, but the thing is that their was no graphical lil window having my picture and my name, all I see was codes from terminal even after it admitted me in. Black screen white coding like it was a terminal on full screen only every thing was via terminal!!! HELP!!!!

If the perspective changes the sprites stay sharp and don't get blurred. How can I archive this? • What are best practices for testing programs with stochastic behavior?

  Doing R&D work, I often find myself writing programs that have some large degree of randomness in their behavior. For example, when I work in Genetic Programming, I often write programs that generate and execute arbitrary random source code. A problem with testing such code is that bugs are often intermittent and can be very hard to reproduce. This goes beyond just setting a random seed to the same value and starting execution over. For instance, code might read a message from the kernal ring buffer, and then make conditional jumps on the message contents. Naturally, the ring buffer's state will have changed when one later attempts to reproduce the issue. Even though this behavior is a feature it can trigger other code in unexpected ways, and thus often reveals bugs that unit tests (or human testers) don't find. Are there established best practices for testing systems of this sort? If so, some references would be very helpful. If not, any other suggestions are welcome!

  Yes, I know that most questions ending with "like Windows" are odd, but this one really bothers me ;) If you ever used some DLNA renderer (in my case DLNA-enabled loudspeakers) you probably know the handy "play to"-feature. • migrating product and team from startup race to quality development

  This is year 3 and product is selling good enough. Now we need to enforce good software development practices. The goal is to monitor incoming bug reports and reduce them, allow never ending features and get ready for scaling 10x. The phrases "test-driven-development" and "continuous-integration" are not even understood by the team cause they were all in the first 2 year product race. Tech team size is 5. The question is how to sell/convince team and management about TDD/unit testing/coding standards/documentation - with economics. train the team to do more than just feature coding and start writing test units along - which looks like more work, means needs more time! how to plan for creating units for all backlog production code
