• Intel Rapid Start Driver Reinstallation doesn't work?

  I recently had to reformat my entire drive and reinstall Windows 7. Something that bothers me is that when I was downloading the Intel Rapid Start driver (I have a Lenovo Ideapad Y480, and it comes standard with the Rapid Start) and tried to install it, the installer claimed that my system did not meet the requirements in order to install, when it was previously installed by the OEM. My startup times have increased from 21 seconds to log-in screen to 50 seconds. Please help... • Is it important to reboot Linux after a kernel update?

  I have a few production Fedora and Debian webservers that host our sites as well as user shell accounts (used for git vcs work, some screen+irssi sessions, etc). Occasionally a new kernel update will come down the pipeline in yum/apt-get, and I was wondering if most of the fixes are severe enough to warrant a reboot, or if I can apply the fixes sans reboot. Our main development server currently has 213 days of uptime, and I wasn't sure if it was insecure to run such an older kernel.

  Just started working with CentOS 5 after wanting to leave Ubuntu server for something a bit more industry-standard, and while trying to configure php-cgi, I run into this: [root@~~~~~~~ run]# /etc/init.d/php_cgi start Starting php-cgi: spawn-fcgi: child exited with: 255 [FAILED] Not 100% sure what's happening here, but no Google result returns anything regarding error code 255.   Do you prefer PPA over core repositories and why or why not? Are there any compatibility issues when using a PPA as there are different distro releases but just one common repository? Where would you normally search for application repositories that are not in the core repositories? • How much power supply do I need for my server, and could a shortage be causing my odd crashing?

  I have 5 servers, all with similar hardware (i7, four 2tb 7200rpm drives, two 4tb 5400rpm drives, 430 watt power supply), and lately the machines have been freezing up. This has gotten worse in the last day or so, and I can't pinpoint any explanation. One recent change was adding the two 4tb hard drives. The crashes happen most often while running a large Hadoop job, so I was originally thinking the load was causing some issues, but last night one server just froze without any heavy load on the box (or so I think), other than HDFS (Hadoop's distributed file system) was probably rebalancing itself since two of the five nodes were offline. If I plugin a monitor and keyboard to one of these frozen machines, I can't get any response or feedback on the screen. Any ideas on possible points of failure and/or different logs I can look at to investigate?   I've just started using selinux in the last 6 months and am getting to grips with it. However, using sealert on a new CENTOS 6 server, Im not getting the level of detail I was with CENTOS 5. I usually use Screengrab to do this with Firefox, but in this situation I want a screenshot of the page as Opera renders it (because I want to show the page as rendered with HTML5 form controls like date and time). I am currently using Opera 10.60 x86_64 on Fedora 12, so solutions that work in browser would be preferable rather than external programs.

  I'm running a Windows 7 guest virtualised under QEMU and using libvirt on a Fedora 17 host, does anyone know if it's possible to create 2 video 'cards' (or a single dual-head) and a spice server for each and connect multiple spice clients to simulate a dual screen VM? Looking through the VMs xml configuration file I can't see a way to associate elements (eg. Spice servers) to elements (in this case, a qxl card). I'm sure qxl doesn't support the dual-head option but are multiple video elements possible?

• Processor upgrade on a laptop vs. Ram upgrade. Also does ram always matter?

  I have a Dell Inspiron 14r (N4110) with an Intel Core i3 and 4gb of ram. It runs very smoothly, however gaming on this laptop is very limited. This is mostly because of integrated graphics but i have seen a computer with a Core i5, and very similar specs otherwise, run games that the N4110 cannot. This other computer has integrated graphics and 6gb of ram. I am wondering whether upgrading ram or upgrading the processor make the most difference in performance. Which setup would get better performance, an i5 with 4gb of ram or an i3 with 8 gb of ram? (Both with integrated graphics) Also, is there a certain point at which you have too much ram for the computer to ever possibly use? For instance is there really any difference in performance between 8 gb and 16 gb of ram?

How can I keep the attributes stored in, for example, media files (date taken, rating, length, etc) while transfering it to outside the realm of NTFS's Alternate Data Streams. I'm aware that similar metadata exists in other file systems, but what happens when you move these files? And what's the best way to retain them in other file systems?

• Dual Touchscreens in Different Rooms

  I'm planning on having one dual-core system running two touchscreens, each in its own room in the house. I'd like to be able to use the internet on one, while someone else uses the other to record music - each of us interacting with the screen as we would separate computers. I was also thinking that running each screen, or certain programs, on its own core might make this work more smoothly. Will this setup work in Windows 7 Home on a mini-tower or do I need to invest in a server to get this sort of workstation/terminal setup to work?

• Separation of memory oriented process and CPU oriented process

  I am develops guy working for an e-commerce company I am running my e-commerce application built using ruby on rails spree commerce. I am presently running 2 medium instances in the production. One is a high memory instance which has 3.8 RAM and single Core CPU and another one is high CPU instance which has Dual Core CPU. Basically AWS calls it has m1.medium and c1.medium instance respectively. My question is it possible to separate the processes according the cpu intense and memory intense? So that all the cpu intense process can be made run in high cpu instance and all the memory intense process can be made to run in the high memory instances. Is any tool available to identify those process. Kindly give me some heads up. Thank you

• Lots of dropped packages when tcpdumping on busy interface

  My challenge I need to do tcpdumping of a lot of data - actually from 2 interfaces left in promiscuous mode that are able to see a lot of traffic. To sum it up Log all traffic in promiscuous mode from 2 interfaces Those interfaces are not assigned an IP address pcap files must be rotated per ~1G When 10 TB of files are stored, start truncating the oldest What I currently do Right now I use tcpdump like this: tcpdump -n -C 1000 -z /data/compress.sh -i any -w /data/livedump/capture.pcap $FILTER The $FILTER contains src/dst filters so that I can use -i any. The reason for this is, that I have two interfaces and I would like to run the dump in a single thread rather than two. compress.sh takes care of assigning tar to another CPU core, compress the data, give it a reasonable filename and move it to an archive location. I cannot specify two interfaces, thus I have chosen to use filters and dump from any interface. Right now, I do not do any housekeeping, but I plan on monitoring disk and when I have 100G left I will start wiping the oldest files - this should be fine. And now; my problem I see dropped packets. This is from a dump that has been running for a few hours and collected roughly 250 gigs of pcap files: 430083369 packets captured 430115470 packets received by filter 32057 packets dropped by kernel <-- This is my concern How can I avoid so many packets being dropped? These things I did already try or look at Changed the value of /proc/sys/net/core/rmem_max and /proc/sys/net/core/rmem_default which did indeed help - actually it took care of just around half of the dropped packets. I have also looked at gulp - the problem with gulp is, that it does not support multiple interfaces in one process and it gets angry if the interface does not have an IP address. Unfortunately, that is a deal breaker in my case. Next problem is, that when the traffic flows though a pipe, I cannot get the automatic rotation going. Getting one huge 10 TB file is not very efficient and I don't have a machine with 10TB+ RAM that I can run wireshark on, so that's out. Do you have any suggestions? Maybe even a better way of doing my traffic dump altogether.

• how to debug BSOD irql_not_less_or_equal error

  So I'm getting the irql_not_less_or_equal BSOD. I tried looking at the event viewer for potential causes, and cannot find any. I also checked the CPU temperature in BIOS right after the error and that was fine. I've tried 2 sets of RAM chips already, both give the issues. The error doesn't happen consistently...it happens daily, but many hours can pass and it won't happen, or only 10 minutes can pass and it might happen again. By the way, just bought the parts and built the computer myself a couple of weeks ago. How to debug the cause for this?   My computer is running an AMD Phenom II quad core CPU but it didn't come with the piece of software that I see people have in a lot of youtube videos. The software is kind of like the ATI catalyst control center but for the AMD processor instead. It shows things like current core temperature, clock speed, etc and I am not sure but maybe it also allows the user to make changes to those things from the control center as well. I am having a hard time finding the download for this online, especially since I don't even have the name for it.
