• How expensive to run PC 24/7 or how to figure out how to determine it?

  I realize this question is difficult to answer as it would be different based on users location, what there PC is doing and what hardware it consist of, along with other factors but I am hoping someone could give me a very rough estimate. I have always ran many PC's in my home 24/7 and I am just now looking at it from a money/cost of electric point of view. 1) I live in Central Florida. Can anyone guesstomate/estimate the avaerage monthly or daily cost of running your average PC? Intel quad core processor, 1 SSD drive for OS and programs and 4-5 1-2 TB hard drives in a RAID setup for data. 750watt PSU. What would your guess be? 2) Also is there an accurate way to figure this out (non-super technical and confusing to a non-math person please) Also I have seen those kill-a-watt devices, do they figure this kind of stuff out for you? 3) Does a larger PSU make your PC consume more power? Thanks for any help, you can most likely tell I am somewhat lost about this!

• Format & Fresh Install Mac os x snow leopard in mac mini.

  Hello Every one. I have purchased dvd of Snow leopard 10.6.2. But actually I purchased mac mini with 10.5.7 leopard I tried to install snow leopard 10.6.2. Everything went perfectly. system was installed successfully. But the problem that I faced is as follows. System was installed but my older data remained as it is. ( means installation didn't format every thing - means installation was done on upgrade basis. ) Now, my system works with very low speed. Previous performance of mac mini was double as compare to current upgrade version. Now - my question are as follows. Does upgrade installation causes the performance in specially osx ? ( means anyone faced this kind of problem ? ) Or 10.6.2 snow leopard is heavy weight system for mac mini ? ( 2Ghz Intel core2duo,1GB RAM - is this configuration OK for snow leopard 10.6.2 ? ) Fresh install works better then upgrade in os x ?

• MacBook Pro - Aquamacs - spell check

  I have tried to use spell check for aquamac. I highlighted a region of the text. Then clicked Edit, then spell check region. I got the error message: Error : No word lists can be found for the language "en_US". Then I went to the website to download the following dictionaries: CocoAspell : I just clicked the download button. It was reported that the download was successful. However, when I tested it and highlighted a text region and clicked spell check. The same error message came out. Do I need to pull the downloaded .pkg to a certain place, such as the application folder, before I opened the .pkg? Or what else do I need to do make it work? I also downloaded the base package Aspell (for Intel) and the pre-built dictionaries as (as the instruction of the website), just the same way as point 1. I still got the same error message. • Squid proxy in cent os often disconnected with error : tunnelConnectTimeout(): tunnelState->servers is NULL

  I am having very often internet disconnection problem with Squid proxy service. My server config; OS: CentOS release 6.3 (Final) model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz cpu MHz : 1600.000 My Local systems IP range:192.168.2.x Server IP: 192.168.2.11 Also this server is configured with lamp for development,Samba SMB file service manager and No svn currently. So i see maximum possibility is this squid proxy since this is where it stops to connect and am sure when i restart the server net started working so something wrong with this squid service only. And this server is connected with local 14 other windows machines and basically serves as a central development node. I am able to resolve it by restarting the server fully some time or sometimes by restarting the squid proxy which is totally killing our development. I have attached my cache log file here for the error info. Being an Ubuntu user I hardly use Windows, but occasionally I do. Like to run Skyrim and other games incompatible with Linux and WINE. The new Sims 3 Seasons patch is also now not supported. When playing these two games and other ones, theoretically. I have also heard others saying that while watching HD movies and video series it also happens. While watching the bluescreen as it happens, I see it is the 'atikmpag.sys' error. I have not installed much and nothing significant. I think I have downloaded Skyrim, Firefox and The Sims 3. I haven't done much more... since Ubuntu is definitely the best in comparison! (No hate, just a joke :P). I can reproduce it easily (just by running a game for less than a minute). It is always there each time, but it's never at a specific time or anything. So far I have found that it may be caused by lack of power to the graphics card, or it may be damaged or fried. Since I've had the computer for a mere 4 months (and have had other problems with it also). I have contacted Dell but they are useless beyond belief. Anyone with any information, solutions or details are encouraged to share your knowledge, as it would be immensely appreciated.

  A company I work with recently replaced their old server and gave it to me. Their old server is a Dell PowerEdge 2600. I've been playing with the machine and even installed Windows Server 2008 on it...and it seems to run it pretty well. Here are the specs for the two machines: Dev Machine: AMD Athlon64 3000+ 2.38 GHz (overclocked from 1.8GHz [@ 280x8.5] - it is stable-ish) Memory (RAM): 1x1GB OCZ PC3200 (Dual-Channel) 300GB HD OS: Windows XP Pro (32bit) SuperPi 1M digit test: 40 seconds Dell PowerEdge 2600 Server: Intel Xeon CPU 2.8GHz 2.8GHz Memory (RAM): 512MBx2 (PC2700, not dual channel) 68GB HD (RAID 5) OS: Windows Server 2000 (32bit) SuperPi 1M digit test: 56 seconds [using 1 processor] (Themes and Aero-Flass UI turned off, of course) I use my computer to regularly run Photoshop CS5, Illustrator CS5, Flash CS5, 5 browsers (Chrome, FF, IE, Safari, Opera), iTunes, Visual Studio 2010, and Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 [sometimes simultaneously :-) ]. The SuperPi test has my dev machine coming in about 30% faster than the Server machine...though this could be due to the server running "Vista" with background processes prioritized. Do you think it would be realistic/advantageous for me to move from my dev machine to the Dell PowerEdge 2600? Is it possible to install additional DVD drives/burners on the server? Can I install my internal 300 GB hard drive on the server? Can I add some USB 2.0 ports? Note: I'll probably install Win XP Pro on the dev machine if I do switch. If not, are there any creative and useful way for me to take advantage of this server (with the goal of faster computing)?

• Huge host CPU usage in idle vmware guest. Ubuntu 10.04 host, Vista SP2 guest

  I'm experiencing huge host CPU usage with an idle vmware guest. Host: Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit 2.6.32-24-generic-pae. (Very new install, i.e 24 hours ago) Hardware is Dell XPS M1530 laptop, 4GB ram. Intel Core II Duo T9300 2.50Ghz The virtualization setting "VT" or something is enabled in my bios. Guest: Completely fresh install of Windows Vista, upgraded to latest SP2 and all windows updates installed. 1024 - 1512MB ram allocated. Absolutely no other software installed on it, apart from VMWare tools. Situation When the guest is doing absolutely nothing, I watch with sysinternals process watch on the guest. This shows that system idle process is between 70 and 99%, usually around 95%. No actual process doing anything. On the host, I watch with top, I get cpu usage of 20% - 80%, usually around 30%. What I have tried Single and Dual processor available to guest - no change. Turn off all peripherals to guest - no network, drives, usb etc - no change. Turn off 3d acceleration for guest - perhaps a small improvement, or no change. Upping allocated ram to guest from 1024MB to 1512MB - no change. Yelling at vmware - no change. I have experienced a similar issue in the past, which was solved by setting the guest to have 1 CPU. This time that hasn't worked.

• Why can't I install Java?

  I've been searching high and low for someone who can help me. I've been trying for a month. A month. to install Java on my new PC to no avail. No tech support forum can seem to help me. It all started while playing tekkit one day. I kept running out of memory (using the 32-bit JRE 7 u45) so I decided to install the 64-bit version. I uninstalled the 32-bit version first, for some reason, and downloaded the 64 bit runtime. In the installer, I go through all the normal screens until the installation progress bar appears. Then, it just sits there. No progress is made. No CPU is used by the installer, or any of its dependencies. The installer will stay like this for hours, days, and in one case a whole week without doing anything at all. I've tried installing older versions, the 32-bit version, even Java 6 and none of them will install. UAC is disabled, I've run regedit, CCleaner, and any other "fix-it" program there is. It's getting to the point where I may just have to wipe my hard drives and start over. I have several applications that require java, so this is an absolute necessity. Please, please, someone have the answer. Here are my system specs: -Intel i7-3770k -AsRock z77 Extreme3 -Samsung 840 pro SSD -WD Caviar Black 1tb

• Computer restarts without warning; code bcc116

  Processor: Intel i5 4430 4-Core 4x3Ghz Motherboard: msi h87-g41 Graphics Card: Nvidia GTX760 Power supply: eps-750 cm RAM: 8GB I bought a new assembled gaming PC which worked fine for a few days. Then it started rebooting without warning. After it restarts windows 7 gives me an bbc 116 error code. Apparently it's something to do with my video card, either it overheating or wrong drivers. I've installed the latest driver from Nvidia for my graphics card. Since it's brand new it can't be dust, I'm running it with its lid open to see if the problem persists. I'm also running prime95 now to see if it tells me anything else. Using core temp it tells me that my CPU reaches up to 95° celsius with the blend stress test from prime95. Aaaand it just peaked to 100°. Of course it doesn't reach these temperatures at all while idle/gaming. I'm gonna let prime95 run for a night and to see what happens. Until then does anyone know what I should do next?

• Mac Mini drive problems but SMART verified: bad hard drive or controller?

  I have a 3-year-old Intel Mac Mini at home. About a month ago, it stopped booting from the hard drive (internal, SATA, 80GB). I tried booting from the Install Disc to repair the filesystem but Disk Utility was unable to do so ("invalid node structure"). I was also unable to use the hard drive in the Terminal from the Install Disc nor from an Ubuntu boot CD ("DRDY err"). I could see the contents of some directories, but others would give an error and I would get failures when trying to copy files. At this point I was sure the filesystem was hosed and I'd want to reformat at least. DiskWarrior was able to let me retrieve the data files I was interested in, which are now copied to an external hard drive, but it reported a high number of problems ("speed reduced by disk malfunction" count was over 2000) when in the process of trying to rebuild the directory for the drive. It also would not let me use the rebuilt directory to replace the one on the drive; it claimed the disk errors prevented recovery in this way. Under normal circumstances I would now assume that the drive itself was going bad: DiskWarrior's "disk malfunction" error above is supposed to imply hardware problems. My initial plan was to buy a replacement for the internal 2.5" drive. However: Disk Utility, command-line tools and DiskWarrior had reported all along that the SMART status of the drive was okay/Verified. So I'm now worried that the drive hardware is actually fine, and that the problems were due to a disk controller that has gone "bad" somehow. If this is the case, I'll probably just replace the whole computer. Any advice on how I can tell what is to blame? I don't have a lot of extra hardware sitting around, so I don't have the option of simply dropping the drive in another machine or popping another hard drive inside the Mini.

• What could cause a WMV to not play to completion in a browser?

  A realtor has had videos created for a community she is selling homes for, the people who made the videos gave them to us in WMV format. I can play these videos without any problem in Windows Media Player, VLC, and Quicktime (via Flip4Mac). I can play the videos from their location at videohomeguide.com in my browser without any trouble. However when I upload the files to our server the video stops at about the 1 minute mark in Safari and FireFox on Mac OS X Snow Leopard. I'm not sure if Windows browsers have the same issue because they are loaded using Windows Media Player. http://carolepaul.com/images/uploads/cottageslsjamestown.wmv <- our server, will fail at 1:09ish. http://www.videohomeguide.com/media/cottageslsjamestown.wmv <- should play to completion (3:27ish) The files generate the same MD5 hash on my desktop and on our server. I used WGET to transfer the files, always downloading from videohomeguide.com. Since the files are identical and are playable using VLC/WMP/Quicktime, and playable in the browsers from videohomeguide.com it seems to me that it is some sort of server config... maybe incorrect headers sent to the browsers? • Bare-metal virtualisation for the desktop

  Hi, Does anyone have any knowledge about bare-metal virtualisation products? I'm interested in building a new desktop machine for home, I've been looking at the Intel Quad Core processors and I'd like to put 8GB of RAM in there, but, it got me thinking about making the most out of the available resources. I thought if I could get a good 64bit machine, put some bare-metal virtualisation on, then have a primary system, I'd also be able to bring up some extra virtualised systems as and when I needed. I know most of the bare metal systems are designed for the server market, but, is there anything out there that works well for a desktop. What are the caveats? I presume I won't be able to make the most out of any video cards I could buy, what about just getting a decent screen resolution, will this be a problem? I run a single 24" screen. What about DVD/CD writing, is this possible? I'd like to re-rip my CD collection, I was hoping the quad 64Bit goodness would help me out with the encoding. I currently use a Mac and couldn't go back to windows so that leaves Linux, I was thinking a primary OS of ubuntu. Does this make a difference? Thanks Andrew

• Windows 7 Blank Screen on Boot / Login

  I have a new system that's having a few problems... sometimes (seems to be when the PC is cold, i.e. has been switched off for a while, though that could be my imagination) I get a blank blue screen when I boot up. The system boots normally and auto-logs-in. The desktop loads and I'm even able to launch applications, but then everything disappears and the screen goes to the default windows desktop blue colour (not the desktop image, just a plain blue with no mouse cursor). At this point the machine completely locks up - I'm unable to even toggle Num Lock and have to hold in the power button for 5 seconds to kill it. Interestingly if I manage to launch some applications before it goes blank, they will usually crash... sometimes explorer.exe will crash too. When I reboot, the system is fine and stable. I've installed the latest graphics drivers and run memtest86+ for 6 passes (and counting) with no errors. The system specs are: CPU: Intel I7 2.66 @ 3.4GHz RAM: 6GB (3 * 2GB DDR3) HDD: 128GB Crucial M225 SSD Motherboard: Gigabyte EX58-UD3R Gfx: ATI Radeon Sapphire 5870 1GB Note: There are a few similar questions but I haven't found one that matches my symptoms

I've just overwritten my partition table of my system's hard disk. i made a cfdisk on the wrong device (/dev/sda instead of /dev/sdd), deleted all partitions, made one new primary spanning over the whole device, set its type to 07 (NTFS) and hit write. So here i am with my system running. Until i reboot, i hope/guess nothing will change - meaning: all my data is accessible (I'm currently making a dd-backup of the whole device and plan to make a .tar.gz-backup of the most important data later). I also backed up /proc/partitions, /proc/diskstats (even though i guess this is more about throughput and stuff like this ...) and /sys/block/sda/sda?/{start,size}. Some further things i know: 4 primary partitions 1st partition: ~100Mb, ext3, /boot 2nd partition: ~100Mb, "Win7 Boot Partition", ntfs(?) 3rd partition: ~20...30GB, Win7, ntfs 4th partition: ~20...30GB, luks-encrypted device The luks- de crypted device is a LVM-PV The /, /home & swap-partitions are all LVs on the (VG on the) above noted PV So my questions: What is the simplest way to just write the kernels partition table to the disk? What is the simplest way to take the above mentioned (and perhaps other I don't know of ...) data and generate the partition table? Are there any problems to take care of regarding to luks and/or lvm? Is there any data I should backup before rebooting (meanig stuff from kernel [ /sys/..., /proc/...] and so on, which could help me regenerate the partition table)? Thanks a lot! • How to repair Mac OS X without reinstalling?

  I have an Intel PC. I have installed iDeneb Mac OS X in my PC. It's running fine. After that I thought about installing Snow Leopard for running the iPad SDK. So I bought a retail Snow Leopard and booted it with Rebel EFI boot loader. When I was installing Snow Leopard, at the end of installation, setup gives an error. So I restarted my PC and boot with Rebel and I saw that the Mac was there so I booted that into safe mode and Mac OS X runs. After that I installed iPad SDK. But when I try to create an application, Xcode is not responsive. It hangs when I choose new project, give it a name and save it on disk. After just as I gave name and choose save it hangs. Is there any way I can repair my Mac OS X without reinstalling? I have also been unable to boot into normal mode and also without Rebel CD. So I want to boot without Rebel CD and also want to run iPad SDK.

• How to get gigabit network speeds on Windows XP?

  We've just installed gigabit switches at work, and things on the Linux side are going well. Our linux boxes, which use a Intel Corporation 82566DM-2 Gigabit nic (according to lspci), consistently get over 900 mbits/sec: iperf -c ipserver ------------------------------------------------------------ Client connecting to ipserver, TCP port 5001 TCP window size: 16.0 KByte (default) ------------------------------------------------------------ [ 3] local 192.168.40.9 port 39823 connected with 192.168.1.115 port 5001 [ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth [ 3] 0.0-10.0 sec 1.08 GBytes 929 Mbits/sec We have a bunch of Windows XP 64-bit machines that use Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx cards. I spent around a day trying to get equivalent speeds on them, but couldn't get above 200 Mbits/sec. I noticed the Windows iperf tests said that the TCP window size was 8 Kb by default (as opposed to 16 Kb on Linux, so I modified my test to reflect that. Still no love. I went to Broadcom's site, downloaded the latest drivers for the card and installed. Still no love. However, finally, I tried a 64 Kb window size with the new drivers, and finally an improvement! $ iperf -c ipserver -w64k ------------------------------------------------------------ Client connecting to ipserver, TCP port 5001 TCP window size: 64.0 KByte ------------------------------------------------------------ [ 3] local 192.168.40.214 port 1848 connected with 192.168.1.115 port 5001 [ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth [ 3] 0.0-10.0 sec 933 MBytes 782 Mbits/sec Much better, but still not really taking advantage of the full capabilities of the network. If the Linux box can reach 950 Mbits/sec consistently, this box should be able to as well. Also, if you're wondering about the medium, this is over the same cable...I'm switching back and forth. • Format & Fresh Install Mac OS X Snow Leopard on Mac mini.

  Hello Every one. I have purchased a DVD of Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.2) I purchased a Mac mini with Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5.7) I tried to install Mac OS X 10.6.2 Everything went perfectly. System was installed successfully. But the problem that I faced is as follows. System was installed but my older data remained as it is. (means installation didn't format every thing - means installation was done on upgrade basis.) Now, my system works with very low speed. Previous performance of Mac mini was double as compare to current upgrade version. Now - my question are as follows. Does an upgrade installation causes the performance issues in Mac OS X? Or is Snow Leopard too demanding for the Mac mini? ( 2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB RAM - is this configuration OK for Snow Leopard? ) Does a fresh install work better than an upgrade?

• Win 7: apps crash, then explorer crashes, then services fail, then boom

  Periodically, every 2-3 days one of my systems will go haywire: every app will crash search will fail via the start menu and then explorer will fail. Restarting explorer via taskmanager will cause it to fail again, then it'll BSOD and restart. The eventlog for when this happens goes something like this every time: ERROR: Session "ReadyBoot" stopped due to the following error: 0xC0000188 (supposedly not a problem) WARNING: The maximum file size for session "ReadyBoot" has been reached... (forget where I found out, but also 'not a problem') ERROR: Session "Circular Kernel Context Logger" stopped due to the following error: 0xC0000188 (again, supposedly not a problem) WARNING: The maximum file size for session "Circular Kernel Context Logger" has been reached... ERROR: Faulting application name: Explorer.EXE, version: 6.1.7600.16450, time stamp:... ERROR: Faulting application name: explorer.exe, version: 6.1.7600.16450, time stamp:... ERROR: Faulting application name: svchost.exe_iphlpsvc, version: 6.1.7600.16385, time stamp:... ERROR: The Service Name service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s) That last one happens a number of times but with a different service name. Then finally we have: ERROR: The Service Control Manager tried to take a corrective action (Restart the service) after the unexpected termination of the Server service, but this action failed with the following error: An instance of the service is already running. After that, I have my BSOD and logs complaining that windows started up without shutting down. It's a new machine: Intel i3 530 4gb RAM (Ran memtest for 4 hrs, no problems) 320GB WD/250GB Seagate HDDs (Happened on fresh installs on 2 separate HDDs) Win7 Pro/Ultimate x64 (wife's copy of pro, my copy of ult, no change) Fresh install + driver and windows update (happened without updates as well) I'm at a bit of a loss as to what I can look at next. Especially since it'll work like a charm for 2-3 days and then it's hooped for a night (I'm on it now in fact - no problems).

• PC won't boot after hanging during Windows 8 automatic repair [closed]

  I've got a custom built PC using an ASUS P5E motherboard and Intel Q6600 CPU. I plugged in my mp3 player to the USB port yesteday, and when I came back to the machine after about an hour or so, the Windows 8 automatic repair message was on the screen. It seemed to stick there for an hour, after which I decided to just hit reset and try and figure out what was going on. However, the machine rebooted to a black screen before even getting to the BIOS, with the monitor lights just blinking indicating there was no signal. Tried powering down completely, waiting a few minutes and then powering back up again with no difference; black screen with monitor lights blinking. Tried leaving it on for a while and then pinging from another machine or accessing it via something like LogMeIn, but everything showed the machine as being offline. There were also no error beeps or anything like that. Also tried unplugging all of the memory and rebooting and that also caused no error beeps. Removed one of the display cards and left the other one in there, and still only a black screen. I'm inclined to think that the motherboard or CPU is fried, but there is no indication of damage on any components and the CPU fan seems to be working fine as it always has, so overheating seems unlikely. It's also plugged into a surge protector. The motherboard also has a green light which still lights up. As everything was still working fine before hitting the reset button during Windows 8 automatic repair screen, at which point everything stopped working, it seems unlikely that this problem is down to component failure. Has anyone else experienced anything like this or have any ideas on what could be causing this behavior?

• How to uninstall files and software from a Solid State Drive (SSD)

  I am using a SSD drive just as a main Operation system and software drive. I have a regular spinning disk for data files. I have read that files are not REALLY deleted from a SSD drive when you "delete" them. So here is my situation and hopefully I can get some good advice. Let's say I have Windows 7 Pro x64bit installed on my 80gb Intel SSD. I then have Adobe Photoshop CS4 installed along with 50 other programs installed onto this SSD. I then decide I am done with Adobe Phjotoshop CS4 and want to remove it. I then decide I want to install another version of Adobe Photoshop and a few other software titles. Would I just do the usual, add/remove software from the windows control panel. Or if the software being removed has an "Uninstall" program to run, then run it and uninstall the software? I realize that all this WILL remove the software from Windows 7 but I am wanting to know if there is additional steps that should be taken since it is a solid state drive (SSD)?

• Ubuntu lucid, maverick high iowait

  I'm using Ubuntu, and I've got the same problem with Lucid and Maverick. From time to time, especially a few minutes after boot, the iowait goes between 50-100% and the box is unusable. Everything that tries to access the disk freezes. I have the following setup: Hard disk: Model Family: Western Digital Caviar Green family Device Model: WDC WD15EADS-00P8B0 Serial Number: WD-WMAVU0391287 Firmware Version: 01.00A01 User Capacity: 1.500.301.910.016 bytes I have a quad core Intel Core2 Q6600 processor, and 4G of memory. When the high iowait occurs, usually 4 processes are active: kdmflush (two procs) jbd2/dm-0-8 jbd2/db-1-8 and a few more starving user processes of course. I know this from top and iotop. Any suggestions about why this is happening? There are a lot of q/a-s about linux and high iowait, but none of them helped so far, I even tweaked the hard disk not to park the head in every 8 seconds (Load cycle count is 50334!!!!! :o ), but nothing. Problem persists. Thank you in advance.
