I found dozens of them in a Google search but I would appreciate if users who have experience with using such an IDE could recommend one.   So I've recently been getting into front-end web development from an embedded systems background and have always thought Javascript/HTML/CSS are not only the de-facto standards but the ONLY tools for the job, similar to what C is for embedded systems. Recently, I've stumbled upon things like Dreamweaver, JSP, facelets, and GWT. While researching these to find out if they are worth learning, I can't get over the idea of why someone wouldn't just use Javascript/HTML/CSS instead. Why deviate from the defacto standards?

• Why the Ubuntu App Developer website is not showing content about development for desktop?

  Looks like they removed every content that is not related with development for desktop. For example when you click in "Get Started" tab there is only information about the Ubuntu Touch and its SDK, when you click on "Resources" tab and then on "Programming languages" you only see C++, JavaScript and QML (no Python, Java, Mono, etc). You also can't find any information about Quickly, try clicking on "Quicky" at "Resources" in the website bottom and you will see a "Page not found" error. Is the site under maintenance or something else?

• Should I be running VM's(Virtual Box) for development on the same hdd as my os or a external usb (2.0) HDD or usb (2.0) flash drive

  I have a mac book pro (7200 rpm / 8GB ram) and I like the idea of virtualized development environments as I like to experiment with different technologies and don't like to have environmental cross contamination. I would like to know for the vm's I run (rarely 2 at time..almost always 1 vm at a time) should the virtual hdd be on my laptops native hdd or some external form (usb hdd, usb flash, or since i have mac express card based sad ?). I don't mind maxing out my ram to 16GB if thats a better option to have in the mix. Thank you

• Java, Jacob and Microsoft Outlook events: Receiving "Can't find event iid" Error

  I am writing a Java program that interacts with Microsoft Outlook using the Jacob library (bridges COM and Java). This program creates a new MailItem, displaying its Inspector window to the user. I wish to subscribe to the inspector's Close event to know when the user is finished editing their mail item. To subscribe to the event, I followed the instructions in Jacob's documentation (about 2⁄3 down the page): The current [event] model is conceptually similar to the Visual Basic WithEvents construct. Basically, I provide a class called com.jacob.com.DispatchEvents which has a constructor that takes a source object (of type com.jacob.com.Dispatch) and a target object (of any type). The source object is queried for its IConnectionPointContainer interface and I attempt to obtain an IConnectionPoint for its default source interface (which I obtain from IProvideClassInfo). At the same time, I also create a mapping of DISPID's for the default source interface to the actual method names. I then use the method names to get jmethodID handles from the target Java object. All event methods currently must have the same signature: one argument which is a Java array of Variants, and a void return type. This makes it possible to work with all the Microsoft Office application events, as well as IE5 events. For an example see the samples/test/IETest.java example. I noticed that the aforementioned IETest.java file subscribes to events like this: new DispatchEvents((Dispatch) ieo, ieE,"InternetExplorer.Application.1"); Therefore, I tried subscribing to my events in a similar manner: new DispatchEvents((Dispatch) inspector, eventHandler, "Outlook.Application"); new DispatchEvents((Dispatch) inspector, eventHandler, "Outlook.Application.1"); new DispatchEvents((Dispatch) inspector, eventHandler, "Outlook.Application.12"); All these attempts failed with the same error.

  I'm new to ASP.NET :) I have a WCF web service, and I want to use Basic authentication. I am getting lost in the authentication options: In IIS 6 Manager, I can go in to the properties of the web site and set authentication options. In the web site's web.config file, under system.web, there is an <authentication mode="Windows"/> tag In the web site's web.config file, under system.serviceModel, I can configure: <wsHttpBinding <binding name="MyBinding" <security mode="Transport" <transport clientCredentialType="Basic"/ </security </binding </wsHttpBinding What is the difference between these three? How should each be configured? Some context: I have a simple web site project that contains a single .svc web service, and I want it to use Basic authentication over SSL. (Also, I want it to not use Windows accounts, but maybe that is another question.)

• Java language features which have no equivalent in C#

  Having mostly worked with C#, I tend to think in terms of C# features which aren't available in Java. After working extensively with Java over the last year, I've started to discover Java features that I wish were in C#. Below is a list of the ones that I'm aware of. Can anyone think of other Java language features which a person with a C# background may not realize exists? The articles http://www.25hoursaday.com/CsharpVsJava.html and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Java_and_C_Sharp give a very extensive list of differences between Java and C#, but I wonder whether I missed anything in the (very) long articles. I can also think of one feature (covariant return type) which I didn't see mentioned in either article. Please limit answers to language or core library features which can't be effectively implemented by your own custom code or third party libraries. Covariant return type - a method can be overridden by a method which returns a more specific type. Useful when implementing an interface or extending a class and you want a method to override a base method, but return a type more specific to your class. Enums are classes - an enum is a full class in java, rather than a wrapper around a primitive like in .Net. Java allows you to define fields and methods on an enum. Anonymous inner classes - define an anonymous class which implements a method. Although most of the use cases for this in Java are covered by delegates in .Net, there are some cases in which you really need to pass multiple callbacks as a group. It would be nice to have the choice of using an anonymous inner class. Checked exceptions - I can see how this is useful in the context of common designs used with Java applications, but my experience with .Net has put me in a habit of using exceptions only for unrecoverable conditions. I.E. exceptions indicate a bug in the application and are only caught for the purpose of logging. I haven't quite come around to the idea of using exceptions for normal program flow. strictfp - Ensures strict floating point arithmetic. I'm not sure what kind of applications would find this useful. fields in interfaces - It's possible to declare fields in interfaces. I've never used this. static imports - Allows one to use the static methods of a class without qualifying it with the class name. I just realized today that this feature exists. It sounds like a nice convenience.

• CSS Files Don't Refresh with Wicket (Launched in Intellij via Start.java)

  I have create a skeleton Wicket project using mvn archetype:create -DarchetypeGroupId=org.apache.wicket -DarchetypeArtifactId=wicket-archetype-quickstart -DarchetypeVersion=1.4-rc4 -DgroupId=com.mycompany -DartifactId=myproject All the configuration/importing new project with Maven/Intellij worked fine. I proceeded to add a basic CSS file to my start page, per the following recommended way of doing it in Wicket 1.4 public class BasePage extends WebPage { public BasePage() { add(CSSPackageResource.getHeaderContribution(BasePage.class, "main.css")); } } The main.css file has been put along side BasePage.java and BasePage.html in /src/main/java. I launch the application with Start.java. The problem is when I make changes to the CSS file it is not being picked up when I relaunch Start.java. (Changes to the java and html files are being updated when I change them) I made sure the browser cache was being cleared, and even valided the request/response in Firfox/Firebug. It seems like somewhere between Wicket's magic and the jetty instance Start.java creates the CSS file is being cached and not updated. Any ideas?

• Team build of Web Projects generates App_web_xxxx.dll files and TFSBuild.Proj Script

  Hi all, I have a web application that has some non-web projects as well. When using Web Deployment, a single assembly is generated for all the aspx.vb files. When using Team Build (TS 2008), a lot number App_Web_xxx.dll file(s) are generated instead of a single assembly. How can i solve this problem and change the TFSBuild.proj file so that it can generate a single Web Assembly instead of a lot number of assemblies. Please help. Thanks Edit: I guess thats because the MERGE operation is not occurring like it used to happen for Web Deployment Project in my solution. How can i enable MERGE of App_web_*.dll files into a single Web.dll assembly file and delete the satellite assemblies?   I'm working on an application in Java, that needs to do some complex logic rule deductions as part of its functionality. I'd like to code my logic deductions in Prolog or some other logic/constraint programming language, instead of Java, as I believe the resulting code will be significantly simpler and more maintainable. I Googled for embedded Java implementations on Prolog, and found number of them, each with very little documentation. My (modest) selection criteria are: should be embeddable in Java (e.g. can be bundled up with my java package instead of requiring any native installations on external programs) simple interface to use from Java (for initiating deductions, inspecting results, and adding rules) come with at least a few examples on how to use it doesn't necessarely have to be Prolog, but other logic/constraint programming languages with the above criteria would suit my needs, too. What choices do I have and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

  I am well aware of this previous question here and have heard great things about those books. I actually bought two of them, Effective Java and Java in a Nutshell as an early Christmas present. I am looking for a good Java book, or books, to further continue my understanding of Java from a recent college graduate point of view. I have learned Java in college and would consider it to be the language I am most comfortable with. Can anyone recommend a good "intermediate" Java book for a situation like mine? I've tried adding them to the classpath and at least six different variations of file/path handling I found online but nothing worked. Could anyone tell me what do I do wrong? Thank you.

• Web service reference location?

  I have a Visual Studio 2008 solution that's currently consisting of three projects: A DataFactory project for Business Logic/Data Access. A Web project consisting of the actual user interface, pages, controls, etc. A Web.Core project consisting of utility classes, etc. The application requires consuming a web service. Normally I'd add the service reference to the Web project, but I'm not sure if this is best practice or not. The following options are open to me: Add the reference to the Web project. Add the reference to the Web.Core project, and create a wrapper method that Web will call to consume the web service. Add a new project called Web.Services, and copy step 2. This project is expected to increase in size so I'm open to any suggestions.
