• New Regular Expression Features in Java 8

  Java 8 brings a few changes to Java’s regular expression syntax to make it more consistent with Perl 5.14 and later in matching horizontal and vertical whitespace. \h is a new feature. It is a shorthand character class that matches any horizontal whitespace character as defined in the Unicode standard. In Java 4 to 7 \v is a character escape that matches only the vertical tab character. In Java 8 \v is a shorthand character class that matches any vertical whitespace, including the vertical tab. When upgrading to Java 8, make sure that any regexes that use \v still do what you want. Use \x0B or \cK to match just the vertical tab in any version of Java. \R is also a new feature. It matches any line break as defined by the Unicode standard. Windows-style CRLF pairs are always matched as a whole. So \R matches \r\n while \R\R fails to match \r\n. \R is equivalent to (?\r\n|[\n\cK\f\r\u0085\u2028\u2029]) with an atomic group that prevents it from matching only the CR in a CRLF pair. Oracle’s documentation for the Pattern class omits the atomic group when explaining \R, which is incorrect. You cannot use \R inside a character class. RegexBuddy and RegexMagic have been updated to support Java 8. Java 4, 5, 6, and 7 are still supported. When you upgrade to Java 8 you can compare or convert your regular expressions between Java 8 and the Java version you were using previously.

• Am I getting paid a reasonable wage for web engineering?

  I've been doing some research and it looks like most people in my line of work - WEB ENGINEERING/WEB APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT - that get paid hourly, make anywhere from $30-80 an hour for their work. With that said, I have SEVEN years of experience with web development including OOP-PHP, MySQL, jQuery, OOP-JS, interface design, ajax, database architecture, etc. I am also very strong with visual design and workflow - thus, I've made some really high quality interactive interfaces. I also have a lot of experience with Zend Framework, Symfony, Wordpress, Drupal, etc and a really strong portfolio to show for it. Here's the catch: I'm 20 years old, haven't graduated from college yet (I'm doing part time school and ~30 hours a week of web development.) But I've literally been doing web apps since I was 13 years old. So my question is: is $14 an hour a reasonable starting wage for working at a company part time?

My only experience with servers and hosting is uploading through FTP and playing around with CPanel/WHM a little. The role's I'm going for are web development PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS type roles, but in recent interviews I've been asked questions about setting up things on the server, that I had no idea what was being said... which wasn't ideal! Without knowing more than I do, it's hard to explain what exactly I'm looking to learn, but it's basically just the server elements I should know as a web developer? If you're a web developer, do you have any dealing with the server apart from uploading files, and if so, what? Are things like Subversion(SVN) and version control systems often set up by the web development team, could that be what they were talking about?

  I'm creating a Ruby game using the Gosu framework. All good. Sometimes, when I run the game, it has some kind of slow startup, and probably it will be rather slow during the whole game. So I close it and... open it again. It is very likely that it will startup quickly and the whole game will run smoothly and fast. Why is that? What is this phenomenon? Is it faster because of some cache stored or whatever since the first run? (But why would cache be stored? If the app dies, I would expect no references at all etc...) Ruby, Windows 7.

• Grails: GGTS not running on Amazon AWS EC2 anyone else successful?

  Im just curious if anyone has had success trying to run the Groovy Grails tool suite on an Amazon AWS EC2 instance with its display exported into your windows machine. If so, I wanted to know which flavor of linux was used on the EC2. I am not having much success with it on the Amazon Linux but haven't tried their Ubuntu instances yet. I got all the way to getting GGTS installed and getting the display exported but when I launch GGTS I get log errors about libraries missing. This is most likely because I didn't use yum to install it so I am probably missing dependencies but I didn't have a choice its not offered as a yum package. • Seeking web-based FTP client for very large file upload

  I have looked around for these for some time... the limits imposed by the web server and/or the dynamic programming environment (e.g. PHP) are far too restrictive for the application I'm working on. We need to be able to move large graphics and video files to and from clients (ranging from tens of MB to a few GB in a single file). Plain FTP with a proper desktop client will do the trick, and we're hosting this in Amazon EC2 with EBS. User management will be done from the office via webmin. Users are chroot-jailed into their home dir by proftpd. net2ftp will work for many clients, but we often need to move single files that approach 1GB or exceed 2-3GB which is way out of the range of any http-based uploader. So we turn to Java or Flash - can they do it? From within the web browser establish an FTP connection and grab a huge file? There are licensed applets and such out there, but none seem convincing. Again, I'm looking for some code that can speak FTP and read (& write?) the local disk, that is delivered in a web browser, and can move single files of 2GB+. The reason for having a web-based interface to FTP is to skip the software installation step for our clients. I will consider proper desktop client software as long as it's "portable" and at least Win+Mac and can be easily configured by lay-man users in a hurry.

• Microsoft Application Request Routing with Windows Authentication

  I'm running into a problem trying to get Windows Authentication working in an environment that uses Microsoft Application Request Routing and was hoping someone might be able to help. The problem I'm running into is that only some requests are authenticated, while others fail with 401 errors. I have followed the Special Case of Running IIS 7.0 in a Web Farm instructions found at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/webtopics/archive/2009/01/19/service-principal-name-spn-checklist-for-kerberos-authentication-with-iis-7-0.aspx to no avail. My current server setup looks like the following: ARR Two servers set up with IIS shared configuration using IIS 7.5 on Windows 2008 R2 Anonymous authentication turned on for the Default Web Site Web Farm Two servers running IIS 7.5 on Windows 2008 R2 Three web sites set up using port binding to differentiate between virtual hosts. Ports being used are 8000, 8001, and 8002 Application pools for Windows Authentication all use a common domain account SPN added to domain account for http/<virthalhost-name>:<port-number> and http/<virtualhost-name>.<fully-qualified-domain>:<port-number> The IIS logs show the following when authentication is working/failing.   I need make an quick estimation on project (not sure we got): It's an old banking CMS java web app: Server: jdk5, weblogic 9. Client: winXP, Ie6. It was design only for use with ie6 but now we need make it also run well on new client: ie8,ie7 on win7. I understand the most difference is the client: DOM and CSS. But my problem is we hasn't been worked with ie8, and I have not enough time to build an testing environment because our developing environment is not ready to make test (its remoting completely, and managed by another partner) Any experience or suggestion to help me weighing this task need will be welcomed.

In /var/lib/tomcat6/conf/policy.d, there are a variety of files that establish default policy. Worth noting at the start: I've not changed the stock tomcat install at all -- no new jars into its common lib directory(ies), no server.xml changes, etc. Putting the .war file in the webapps directory is the only deployment action. the web application I'm deploying fails with thousands of access denials under this default policy (as reported to the log thanks to the -Djava.security.debug="access,stack,failure" system property). turning off the security manager entirely results in no errors whatsoever, and proper app functionality What I'd like to do is add an application-specific security policy file to the policy.d directory, which seems to be the recommended practice. What's interesting is that: it doesn't exist in this context the fact that the file doesn't exist ends up throwing a security exception, rather than java.io.File.exists() simply returning false (although I suppose that's just a matter of the semantics of the read permission). Another workaround (besides just disabling the security manager in tomcat) is to add an open-ended permission to my policy file: grant { permission java.security.AllPermission; }; I presume this is functionally equivalent to turning off the security manager. I suppose I must be getting the codeBase declaration in my grants subtly wrong, but I'm not seeing it at the moment.

• Coding solution to WAR installation error (Websphere Portal 6.0) ?

A week ago, the WAR file produced by Rational Application Developer could be installed on the Portal server with no problems. Yesterday I made some seemingly minor changes to two JSP files and their associated "pagecode" Java files, and attempting to update the WAR on the server (using the Portal Administration web interface) now produces an error message. The WAR upload works, and the system shows me the correct list of portlets in the WAR file, but clicking "Finish" gives me a page with the error message "EJPAQ1319E: Cannot install the selected WAR file. Explanation: A portlet application containing legacy portlets can only be updated with another portlet application that contains legacy portlets. The same is true for standard portlet applications. User Response: Modify the portlet.xml of the application such that it matches the original API type, standard or legacy and try again. However, the "portlet.xml" file has not changed in about a month, and I've done several WAR updates for this application in that time with no problems. The problem seems to be caused by the code changes I did yesterday, but I have no clue why a few lines of code would do this. Any ideas?

• How to efficiently manage files on a filesystem in Java?

  I am creating a few JAX-WS endpoints, for which I want to save the received and sent messages for later inspection. To do this, I am planning to save the messages (XML files) into filesystem, in some sensible hierarchy. There will be hundreds, even thousands of files per day. I also need to store metadata for each file. I am considering to put the metadata (just a couple of fields) into database table, but the XML file content itself into files in a filesystem in order not to bloat the database with content data (that is seldomly read). Is there some simple library that helps me in saving, loading, deleting etc. the files? It's not that tricky to implement it myself, but I wonder if there are existing solutions? Just a simple library that already provides easy access to filesystem (preferrably over different operating systems). Or do I even need that, should I just go with raw/custom Java?

From what I found: Play, Stripes, and Spring are good choices for beginners, but how can I compare these frameworks together. What is it that I need to look for when comparing them?   Hi I am using edtftpj-pro3.1 trial copy in my android app to make SFTP connection with the server. After few connections with the server with 5-6 file transfers, my app is crashing with following exception. Is it causing the problem or what could be the problem?? • How to implement Session timeout in Web Server Side?

  I beheld a web framework implementing in-memory session in this way. The session object is added to Cache with timeout. When the time is out, the session is removed from Cache automatically. To protect race condition, each request should acquire lock on given session object to proceed. Each request will "touch" the session in Cache to refresh the timeout. Everything looks fine, until this scenario is discovered. Say, one operation takes a long time, longer than timeout. Another request comes and wait on session lock which is currently hold by the long-time request. Finally, the long-time request is over, it releases the lock. But, since it already takes longer time than timeout, the session object is already removed from Cache. This is obvious because the only request holding the lock doesn't have a chance to "touch" the session object in cache. The second request gets the lock but cannot retrieve the expired Session object. Oops... To fix this issue, the second request has to re-create the Session object. But, this is just like digging a buried dead body from tomb and try to bring it back to life. It causes buggy code. I'm wondering what's the best way to implement timeout in session to handle such scenario. I know that current platform must have good session mechanism. I just want to know the under-the-hood how.
